  • Masked students disrupt Columbia classes, distribute antisemitic leaflets

Columbia University erupted in another round of anti-Israel protests Tuesday, with masked people disrupting classes and passing out flyers showing a boot stamping on a Star of David, witnesses told The Post.

Video shows the masked protesters bursting into a History of Modern Israel class on campus and handing out flyers showing an Israeli flag on fire and the words “Burn Zionism to the ground.”

The incident comes as Columbia was named the “national model” for anti-Israel protest — setting a template copied by others for coordinated protests across the country, according to a watchdog group.

In its report looking at protests on campus last year, the Canary Mission identified more than 300 Columbia faculty, students and others who were “influential in promoting Hamas ideology at Columbia” after the terror group’s October 7 attacks on Israel, which left 1,200 Israelis dead and saw 250 taken hostage.

However, most of the people who took part in the protests were “outside agitators” and only 68 were Columbia students, according to the 53-page study “From Tehran to Columbia: Inside America’s Student Intifada.”

Student Lishi Baker, 22, a Middle East history major whose class was disrupted Tuesday, told The Post the posters “looked like images we might see in 1930s Germany.

“This movement continues to reveal itself as pro-terror … they spit in the face of liberal values and create an intolerable hostile environment for Jewish students.”

Following Tuesday’s disruption, visiting professor Avi Shilon told The Post he was mostly concerned for the safety of his class.

“They just want to frighten my students … I was very much disappointed with the students who came to the class because if you are learning at Columbia, which is an Ivy League university, you should respect first and foremost the need to learn to study the subject before protesting.

“They act very aggressively … these things like that can happen in the street but not within the university, not within the class.”

Current University President Katrina Armstrong later made a statement, saying: “We strongly condemn this disruption, as well as the fliers that included violent imagery that is unacceptable on our campus.

“Disrupting academic activities constitutes a violation of the Rules of University conduct … We will move quickly to investigate and address this act.

“Any act of antisemitism, or other form of discrimination, harassment, or intimidation against members of our community will not be tolerated.”

Elsewhere across Columbia Tuesday — despite a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war — protesters banged drums, chanted and distributed the clearly antisemitic propaganda.

Vowing to continue their protests in 2025, the groups Columbia University Apartheid Divest and Within Our Lifetime wrote “We will not stop” in a social media post calling on people to attend their rally.

“I don’t think anyone anticipated masked, intimidating protesters barging in with a drum,” Baker added.

“It goes against everything that higher education stands for. These people are openly against not just discussion, they’re openly against anyone in the university learning about the history of Israel. They’re against Israeli professors teaching at Columbia University.”

Last spring, Columbia students, with the help of faculty and outside agitators not associated with the university, organized “the Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on the Ivy League school’s lawn in Upper Manhattan.

The encampment was organized by the Columbia chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, who demanded “divestment and an end to Columbia’s complicity in genocide.”

Although the NYPD cleared out many of the participants in the protest after April 17, the first day, many returned to protest and stayed put for two weeks.

“The encampment cemented Columbia as the most infamous pro-terror hub, and
Columbia activists subsequently helped drive the movement nationwide,” according to the Canary Mission report.

Columbia students Aidan Parisi as well as Andrew Timberg, a student in the Department of Religion, have also been heavily involved in the protests. Timberg was the spokesman for Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), a coalition of 80 anti-Israel groups, the study says.

The group demanded Columbia reinstate Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) a month after the Oct. 7 pogrom.

Parisi, who occupied the school’s Hamilton Hall building along with other protesters, was later suspended from the school, according to reports.

The Canary report alleges the suspension of SJP was little more than “a PR move” because the group came back under the CUAD umbrella.

One of the antisemitic flyers distributed on campus vows, “The enemy will not see tomorrow.” @CUJewsIsraelis/X

“SJP chapters on college campuses across the US serve as student arms of Iran’s terror proxy, Hamas,” the report says, adding that Columbia hosted the first national SJP conference, during which it adopted “points of unity,” which included the destruction of Israel.

A spokesperson for Columbia said the school “strongly condemns antisemitism.”

“We are resolute that calls for violence or harm have no place at our University,” the spokesperson said.

“Since assuming her role in August, Interim President [Katrina] Armstrong and her leadership team have taken decisive actions to reinforce Columbia’s academic mission, make our community safe, and strengthen and clarify our disciplinary processes.”

In a disturbing turn of events, masked students have disrupted classes at Columbia University and distributed antisemitic leaflets on campus. This hateful and intolerant behavior has no place in our academic community, and we must stand together against such acts of discrimination.

It is deeply concerning to see students resort to such tactics, as it goes against the values of inclusivity and respect that we strive to uphold at Columbia. Antisemitism has no place in our society, and we must condemn it in the strongest terms.

We must come together as a community to support our Jewish students and faculty members, and to ensure that all members of our community feel safe and welcome on campus. It is crucial that we stand up against hate and bigotry in all its forms.

We urge anyone with information about the masked students who disrupted classes and distributed antisemitic leaflets to come forward and help identify those responsible. We must hold accountable those who seek to spread hatred and division in our community.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a campus environment that is inclusive, diverse, and respectful of all individuals. Together, we can combat antisemitism and ensure that Columbia remains a place where all are welcome and valued.

  • THC, CBD regulations coming into effect in 2025 expected to disrupt hemp industry

THC, CBD regulations coming into effect in 2025 expected to disrupt hemp industry

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – On January 1, 2025, the laws surrounding THC and CBD products will change across Louisiana. It not only lowers the amount of THC and CBD that can be sold in stores from 8mg to 5mg, but it also changes the minimum age to 21. It also bans gas stations from selling the products.

Those who pushed for this law say it will be safer for consumers because it will require the higher potency products be tested and regulated and ultimately sold in a licensed dispensary. However, one store owner says his business will see drastic changes because of the few bad actors in the hemp industry.

Jordan Younes is the owner of 420 Smoke and Liquor shop locations across south Louisiana. He says at least 40% of their inventory consists of products that will need to be disposed of. They will then have to source lower-strength products and explain to consumers why their products are changing. He says it hurts their credibility as a store when they have complied with everything thus far.

“At the end, it’s not good for either of us as owner as business owners or the consumer. Someone is making money, but not us anymore. Going to be the dispensaries,” Younes says. “With us having all this inconsistency, that makes us look bad to the public, to the customer.”

Younes says they will lose business, and so will the state, though he says they are selling legitimate and safe products. He says consumers will likely end up paying for the higher dosage products by sourcing it out of state or getting medical marijuana cards.

CEO of Capitol Wellness Solutions, Dr. Randy J Mire, says there are many shops and places like gas stations, that have taken advantage of the loophole and have hurt patients. He says this law stemmed from consumer complaints. This law does not impact his products – as Capitol Wellness Solutions is in the Therapeutic Marijuana industry, not the hemp industry.

Also starting Wednesday, consumable hemp products, not including drinks, must be kept behind the sales counter. Plus, any restaurants and bars who didn’t get a permit before June will no longer be able to sell hemp-derived THC products.

The hemp industry is facing a major shakeup as new regulations surrounding THC and CBD levels are set to come into effect in 2025. These regulations, which are aimed at standardizing the levels of these compounds in hemp products, are expected to significantly disrupt the industry.

THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis, and CBD, a non-psychoactive compound with a range of potential health benefits, have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, the lack of consistent regulation around the levels of these compounds in hemp products has led to confusion and inconsistency in the market.

With the new regulations set to come into effect in 2025, companies in the hemp industry will be required to adhere to strict guidelines regarding the levels of THC and CBD in their products. This could mean significant changes for many companies, particularly those that rely on high levels of these compounds to differentiate themselves in the market.

While the regulations are intended to provide consumers with more consistent and reliable products, they are also expected to create challenges for companies in the hemp industry. Some companies may need to reformulate their products to comply with the new regulations, while others may struggle to meet the requirements altogether.

Overall, the new regulations surrounding THC and CBD levels in hemp products are expected to bring about a period of significant change and disruption in the industry. Companies will need to be proactive in preparing for these changes in order to remain competitive in the evolving market landscape.

  • Here’s where the weather could disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations

Here’s where the weather could disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations

    CNN
     —

It’s no surprise that a year filled with extreme weather won’t be going out quietly with stormy conditions on the way for parts of the United States on New Year’s Eve, including some of the most populated areas of the Northeast.

A quick-moving storm will race into the East on Tuesday and deliver potentially drenching rain anywhere from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast as the final hours of 2024 tick away.

It’ll be quite wet for New York City’s iconic New Year’s Eve celebrations. Rain will move into the city early Tuesday evening and could be heavy at times, especially from 8 p.m. to midnight when an estimated 1 million people pack into Times Square.

The final day of 2024 will feel more like mid-November in the city with a high temperature in the low 50s Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will remain steady throughout the evening and will be around 50 degrees leading up to midnight.

A few thunderstorms are possible anywhere from coastal North Carolina to southern New England within this larger area of rain, including in New York City, Philadelphia and Boston. These storms aren’t expected to become severe, but any lightning strikes could be dangerous for people celebrating the turn to 2025 outdoors.

While the East mainly encounters rain in the last hours of 2024, parts of the Midwest are in for a sloppy New Year’s Eve as some snow mixes with rain at times.

Chicago will start the day with rain but snowflakes will start to mix in later in the afternoon and this wintry mix will continue until around midnight. Similar conditions will unfold in Detroit.

Powerful winds are roaring over the Rockies on Monday but much of the Plains and West will end up dry and calmer on Tuesday. Parts of California will be the exception and have to contend with a new batch of Santa Ana winds.

Any celebratory fireworks or other sparks in Southern California on Tuesday or Wednesday could easily set off new blazes that potentially exhibit “extreme fire behavior” in very dry and breezy areas, the National Weather Service in Los Angeles warned.

This Santa Ana wind event will peak in strength late Tuesday into early Wednesday and deliver widespread wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph, with isolated gusts to 55 mph in parts of Southern California.

These winds – along with plenty of dry air – mean level 1 of 3 fire weather conditions are in place Tuesday from Santa Barbara to parts of the Los Angeles basin, including the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Fernando Valley and portions of the San Gabriel Mountains, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Santa Ana winds drove the explosive Franklin Fire that forced more than 20,000 people from their homes in the Malibu area earlier this month.

As we approach New Year’s Eve, many people are eagerly making plans to ring in the new year with friends and loved ones. However, the weather forecast may have other ideas. As we all know, Mother Nature can be unpredictable, and some regions may be facing potential disruptions to their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Here are a few areas where the weather could put a damper on festivities:

    1. Snowstorms: In regions where snow is common during this time of year, a snowstorm could make travel difficult and dangerous. This could impact those planning to attend outdoor events or parties, as well as those hoping to travel to see fireworks displays.

    2. Heavy rain: For areas experiencing heavy rain, outdoor events may need to be canceled or moved indoors. This could affect planned fireworks shows, outdoor concerts, or street parties.

    3. High winds: Strong winds can also pose a threat to outdoor celebrations, especially those involving fireworks. In extreme cases, high winds could lead to power outages or damage to property.

    4. Cold temperatures: In some regions, frigid temperatures could make outdoor celebrations unbearable for partygoers. This could lead to lower turnout at events and impact businesses relying on New Year’s Eve crowds.

While we can’t control the weather, it’s important to stay informed and prepared for any potential disruptions to your New Year’s Eve plans. Make sure to check the forecast regularly and have a backup plan in place in case of inclement weather. Stay safe, stay warm, and have a happy New Year!
