  • JCPS, Louisville-area districts have NTI due to cold

Attention Louisville-area families: Due to the extreme cold weather conditions, Jefferson County Public Schools and other surrounding districts will be implementing Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) for students. This means that students will be completing their schoolwork remotely from home.

While we understand that this may be an inconvenience, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. We encourage all families to stay warm and stay safe during this chilly weather.

Please check your school’s website or social media pages for more information on how to access and complete NTI assignments. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time. Stay warm, Louisville! #JCPS #NTI #StaySafeLouisville

  • SHARS funding to be returned by KISD, many Texas districts | Local News

In a shocking turn of events, several Texas school districts, including KISD, have announced that they will be returning SHARS funding that they received from the state. SHARS, or School Health and Related Services, is a program that provides funding for schools to provide health services to students with disabilities.

The decision to return the funding comes after an investigation by the Texas Education Agency found that some districts had been improperly billing Medicaid for services provided through the SHARS program. This has raised concerns about the misuse of funds and lack of oversight in the program.

KISD Superintendent Dr. Smith issued a statement saying, “We take our responsibility to our students and taxpayers very seriously. We are committed to transparency and accountability, which is why we have decided to return the SHARS funding that was received in error.”

Many parents and community members are understandably outraged by this news, as they worry about the impact that returning the funding will have on the services provided to students with disabilities. However, KISD and other districts are working to ensure that these students will continue to receive the support they need.

It remains to be seen how this will affect future funding for the SHARS program and what steps will be taken to prevent similar issues from arising in the future. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • MN school districts cancel school Tuesday because of dangerously cold temps

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Warning for the entire state until 12 p.m. Tuesday as wind chills could plummet to as low as -45.

MINNEAPOLIS — Several school districts across the state, including Minneapolis and St. Paul, are canceling classes due to Tuesday’s subzero temperatures and wind chills.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Warning for the entire state until noon Tuesday as wind chills could plummet to as low as -45. As a result, several districts have already canceled school or shifted to distance learning in anticipation of the “dangerously cold temperatures.”

Many are also canceling school-sponsored programs. For a complete list of closures and delays, click here.

“Our commitment is to keep families, staff and the community informed of weather-related school closings and cancellations,” said the SPPS district in a news release.

Anoka-Hennepin, the state’s largest school district, also announced it would be closed on Tuesday, saying the decision was made for the “safety of the students and staff.”

According to KARE 11 meteorologist Jamie Kagol, this recent Arctic blast is due to a polar vortex in the region.

“We live on this big blue marble called Earth and at the top and the bottom you have spinning air — a vortex — and that air at the top and bottom, North and South Pole, is very cold,” explained Kagol. “So that’s your polar vortex. That’s what the polar vortex is.”

MN School Districts Cancel School Tuesday Due to Dangerously Cold Temperatures

In light of the extreme weather conditions expected on Tuesday, several Minnesota school districts have made the decision to cancel classes for the day. With wind chills expected to plummet well below zero, the safety and well-being of students and staff are the top priority.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to take necessary precautions to keep their children safe and warm during this frigid weather. It is important to limit time spent outdoors and dress in layers to protect against frostbite and hypothermia.

While the cancellation may disrupt daily routines, the safety of students and staff is paramount. School officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates as needed.

Stay warm and stay safe, Minnesota!

  • Winners announced for school district’s ‘Phones Away and Learn Today’ PSA contest

The Washoe County School Board of Trustees on Tuesday discussed the “Phones Away and Learn Today” district-wide pilot program which is officially underway, including the winners of the campaign’s PSA contest.

During the update, Trustee Coleen Westlake asked the presenters to address emergency phone usage for parents who feel anxious about the new program. She said she had seen several emails from parents concerned they wouldn’t be able to contact their students in an emergency.

School Police Chief Tracy Moore said students will not be denied communication with parents when it is safe to do so, and he understands the desire to be in contact with students during an emergency. He said even he uses an app to communicate with his children in such situations.

He said school police, administrators and the communications department work closely to send information to parents “as quickly as we can and as informative as we can during an emergency.”

He said this way, parents receive information from law enforcement and on-site administrators who have accurate updates for families. “When it’s safe to do so, we want to send that message to the parents in our community,” Moore said.

As part of the pilot program, students were asked to submit public service announcements (PSAs) in the form of posters, videos or similar artwork.

The district received several contributions, and five projects were selected.

    • Isabella Buscunan Fernandez of Incline Middle School was selected for her video submission.
    • Gavin Cates, Jack Egan, Arek Engelke, Sonia Gustavson and Gio Whittey of AACT were selected for their video submission.
    • Madeline Fisher of Wooster High School was selected for her bilingual informational poster submission.
    • Sophia Anderson of Spanish Springs High School was selected for her graphic poster submission.
    • Liepa Etchegoyhen, Colin Pilcher, Bebe Slater and Sophia Valdez of Reno High School were selected for their video submission.

    Each can be viewed here.

All winners received a $25 gift card to Scheels, and their PSAs have already been circulating on-site at schools, as well as on district websites and social media. Smith commended district leadership and Superintendent Joe Ernst for seeking student input on the PSAs.

“When we’re doing it together, we’re going to make progress,” Superintendent Joe Ernst said.

We are thrilled to announce the winners of our school district’s ‘Phones Away and Learn Today’ PSA contest!

After receiving numerous creative and impactful submissions from students across the district, our panel of judges had the difficult task of selecting the top entries. Each PSA focused on the importance of minimizing distractions and staying focused on learning by putting away phones and other electronic devices during school hours.

Without further ado, the winners are:

1st Place: Amelia Smith, 10th grade
2nd Place: David Nguyen, 11th grade
3rd Place: Maya Patel, 9th grade

Congratulations to all the winners! Your hard work and dedication to spreading this important message is truly commendable.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to all the students who participated in the contest. Your creativity and passion for promoting a positive learning environment did not go unnoticed.

Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative and helped make it a success. Together, we can continue to encourage a culture of focus and productivity in our schools.

Stay tuned for updates on how these winning PSAs will be shared throughout the district to inspire others to put their phones away and learn today!

    Houston Weather Forecast

    Timeline:

Tuesday looks like a snow day. Yes, actually a snow day in the Houston area.

Now, while the exact locations of significant snow are still uncertain, it definitely looks like 2 to 3 inches of snow in the greater Houston area are possible. There will likely be a few spots north of Houston that even see 3, 4 or 5 inches of snow, so it’s pretty exciting stuff.

Unfortunately, that does come with some hazards. Ice may also be mixed in with the snow, and there also is a chance that the snow could be slushy, causing it to briefly melt and then freeze overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, so travel is going to be treacherous all across our area on Tuesday and for the first half of Wednesday.

Beyond that, we’ll continue to have a series of cold mornings, but slightly warmer afternoons, and we’re hoping to get back into the 60s by Saturday.
