  • Timeline: When snow could arrive Sunday in the DMV

One to four inches of snow could accumulate across the DMV Sunday.

    12:32 AM EST January 18, 2025

WASHINGTON — Snow and colder temperatures are in the forecast Sunday across metro D.C. A widespread one to four inches of snow is forecast.

    What: Accumulating snow Sunday

Impact: Untreated roads will become snow covered quickly. Slick travel.

Need:  Plan on extra travel time. Use caution and care when traveling. Shoveling and plowing.

A blast of cold air and another round of snow are in the forecast for the DMV Sunday.  As Arctic air spills into the region a disturbance will pass by giving us fresh snow.  Snow will start early Sunday morning and last through most of the day. Snow should end after 5 p.m. for most areas. Right now, we’re forecasting one to four inches of snow.  However, we are monitoring some models that could either reduce or increase those numbers.  Check with us for updates as we will adjust snow amounts as needed.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for areas west of I-95 where up to 6″ of snow is possible. Most of the DMV will end up with 2 – 4″ of snow.

    January 19 snowfall records:

    National Airport – 7.0 inches (1961)
    Dulles Airport – 4.3 inches (1978)
    BWI Airport – 7.7 inches (1961)

Southern Maryland will have a mix of rain and snow and will see less than 2 inches of accumulation.

Temperatures will drop during the day. We’ll see temperatures fall to the 20s by the end of the day.

    TIMELINE

    3 a.m. – 6 a.m. – Light rain and a wintry mix move in overnight.

6 a.m. – 9 a.m. – Precipitation switches to snow for most of the region except southern Maryland where rain will continue. Snow and rain showers will be fairly scattered at the onset with light to occasionally moderate snow.

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Widespread light to moderate snow with some heavier bursts.

12 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Widespread light to moderate snow with some heavier bursts continuing.

3 p.m. – 6 p.m. – Snow begins to taper off to lighter snow showers before ultimately clearing out.

    6 p.m. – 9 p.m. – A few lingering flakes with otherwise clearing skies.

With winter weather on the horizon, many residents in the DMV are wondering when they can expect the first snowfall of the season. Here is a timeline of when snow could arrive in the DMV on Sunday:

    – Early morning: There is a chance of light snow showers in the early morning hours, primarily in the western suburbs of the DMV.

    – Mid-morning: Snow showers are expected to become more widespread across the region, with the potential for light accumulation on grassy surfaces.

    – Afternoon: Snowfall may intensify in the afternoon, with the possibility of heavier bands of snow moving through the area.

    – Evening: Snow showers are likely to continue into the evening hours, potentially impacting travel conditions for those commuting home.

As always, it is important to stay informed of the latest weather updates and advisories from local officials. Stay safe and warm, DMV!

  • DC winter snow storm: 4 to 8 inches forecast for DMV by Monday night

DC winter snow storm: 4 to 8 inches forecast for DMV by Monday night

The Washington, D.C. region is bracing for winter weather with a significant snow threat from Sunday night into Monday.

Will there be a refreeze Friday night?

While there may be some slick surfaces from afternoon snow and rain showers, most of the area quickly dries out, aided by gusty winds. There should not be too much of a refreeze issue overnight.

When did the snow start on Friday?

The first system brought snow to the area on Friday afternoon and evening. Intermittent rain and snow showers began just after 1 p.m. The snow threat continued until 7 p.m. Most of the day was cloudy with high temperatures near 43 degrees.

The snow showers and squalls impacted the Friday afternoon and evening commute. Parts of Maryland to the north and west of D.C. saw a coating of snow on the ground by the time the system moved away.

By the early morning, some school districts in the area had announced early dismissal plans.

When will the snow start on Sunday?

The main event, expected to bring sizable accumulations to the region, will begin late Sunday night into Monday. The storm will start as snow early Monday, then possibly mix with sleet and freezing rain in the morning.

“As it looks right now, we’ll certainly have the chance for accumulating snowfall of several inches across the DMV all the way throughout the day on Monday,” Grenda said.

How much snow could we get on Monday?

The latest forecast shows a widespread four to eight inches of snow possible across much of the D.C. region, with locally more possible. Areas south of D.C. will have a better chance of a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Temperatures will stay in the 30s through Thursday of next week.
