  • Luka Dončić’s dad Saša slams ‘hypocrisy’ of ex-Mavericks star’s trade to Lakers: ‘Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this’

Luka Dončić released a letter to Dallas touting the city as a “special place” and Mavericks fans as “special fans” upon the news of his stunning trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.

His father Saša Dončić was considerably less subdued in his reaction to the Mavericks’ decision to deal away their 25-year-old franchise player and perennial MVP candidate. Saša Dončić, a former professional player and head coach in Slovenia, made his feelings known in a candid interview with Arena Sport Slovenia on Sunday.

Without naming names, he slammed the “hypocrisy” of Mavericks brass involved in the trade.

“I understand there comes a moment when you disagree with a certain philosophy — you don’t like this or that player, all good, get it,” Saša Dončić said, per Arena Sport translation.

“But I think that exactly this secrecy, or should I say from some individuals, maybe even hypocrisy, this hurts me personally. Because I think that Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this.”

Saša echoed Luka’s professed love for Dallas while touting his charitable work in the city since joining the Mavericks from Europe in 2018.

“I feel like this is very unfair from some individuals because I know that Luka respected Dallas a lot,” Saša continued. “He respected the whole city, Dallas. Helped children. It was never a problem for him to go to hospitals and to — I don’t know, orphanages and to all these charity events.”

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has been the Mavericks’ public face of the trade decision in multiple interview since the deal took place late Saturday. In an interview with ESPN, he justified the trade by declaring that “defense wins championships.”

“I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison told ESPN. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

    Davis, 31, is a three-time blocks champion and a five-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection.

According to an ESPN report, Harrison was dissatisfied with Luka Dončić’s conditioning, and there was “extreme frustration throughout the organization about Doncic’s lackadaisical approach to diet and conditioning, which Mavs decision-makers believed negatively impacted his durability.”

Dončić has been sidelined for 19 games with a calf injury that he suffered on Christmas. Saša addressed the reports about Luka’s conditioning with Arena Sport.

“It wasn’t even a problem last year since, I am saying again — one individual said he’s not fit enough that he played, I don’t know, 100 games practically 40 minutes with two, three players constantly on him,” Saša said. “That he was beaten and you say such things about him. I feel that this is very unfair from certain individuals.

“You traded him. Stand by your actions. But don’t look for excuses, alibis and that’s it.”

Last season, Dončić played 37.5 minutes per game in 70 regular-season games, then 40.9 minutes per game in 22 postseason games while leading the Mavericks to the NBA Finals as a first-team All-NBA selection for a fifth-straight season.

Now, less than a season after leading the Mavericks to their first Finals appearance since 2011, Dončić will attempt to do the same for the Western Conference-rival Lakers.

Luka Dončić’s dad Saša slams ‘hypocrisy’ of ex-Mavericks star’s trade to Lakers: ‘Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this’

In a recent interview, Saša Dončić, the father of NBA star Luka Dončić, expressed his frustration and disappointment with the trade that sent his son from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers. Saša Dončić criticized the “hypocrisy” of the decision and insisted that Luka did not deserve to be traded.

“Luka has given his all to the Mavericks and has been a loyal and dedicated player for years. It is truly disappointing to see him being traded in this manner,” Saša Dončić said. “The hypocrisy of the situation is evident, and it is clear that Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this treatment.”

Saša Dončić went on to praise his son’s work ethic and commitment to the game, highlighting the impact Luka has had on the Mavericks and the NBA as a whole. He urged fans and analysts to consider the human side of the trade and to remember the hard work and dedication that Luka has put into his career.

The trade of Luka Dončić to the Lakers has been met with mixed reactions from fans and analysts, with many questioning the motives behind the move. Saša Dončić’s comments shed light on the emotional toll that trades can have on players and their families, emphasizing the need for empathy and understanding in these situations.

As Luka Dončić prepares to start a new chapter with the Lakers, his father’s words serve as a reminder of the sacrifices and challenges that come with being a professional athlete. Despite the disappointment of the trade, Saša Dončić remains supportive of his son and confident in his ability to succeed in his new team.

  • ‘Mbappe Doesn’t Know How To Play As Striker’

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe received advice from his idol and club legend Cristiano Ronaldo during an interview the Portuguese conducted with El Chiringuito.

There are famous photos of a young Mbappe with Ronaldo posters on his wall, or meeting the five-time Ballon d’Or winner at Real Madrid HQ.

After completing a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, Mbappe now has the chance to emulate ‘CR7’ in becoming a Bernabeu legend.

“I love him very much, and not only because of the story he had as a young man that he loved Cristiano Ronaldo very much and he was his idol,” Ronaldo said about the Frenchman.

“But I really see him as a crack [i.e. a star player]

, and he is going to give Real Madrid a lot of joy,” Ronaldo predicted.

Now at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo confessed that he watches Madrid “from time to time because my son Mateo likes Mbappe a lot”.

There they’d see Mbappe operating as a central number 9, which the 26-year-old initially struggled with ahead of finding his feet which has caused head coach Carlo Ancelotti to recently dub him the “best centre-forward in the world”.

“The striker position makes it a bit difficult for Mbappe, because he doesn’t know how to play as a striker in my opinion… It’s not that he doesn’t know, it’s not his position,” Ronaldo said.

“If I were at Real Madrid I would teach him to play as a 9. Because I wasn’t a striker. I got used to playing as a striker. I played on the wing and people forget,” he reminded us.

“Kylian shouldn’t be your typical striker. If I were him, I would play more or less like Cristiano Ronaldo plays as a striker,” Ronaldo suggested.

The generational great also made a demand of Los Blancos supporters in their treatment of Mbappe, which is to “take care of him” first and foremost.

“I say this to the Real Madrid fans… Take care of the kid,” the 39-year-old stressed, before predicting that, “I have no doubt Mbappe is going to give Real Madrid fans a lot of joy”.

Though he has already done this at certain points of 2024/2025, Mbappe can further do so by helping see off Manchester City in the Champions League playoffs later this month.

In a surprising turn of events, it seems that Kylian Mbappe, one of the most talented young footballers in the world, may not actually know how to play as a striker. Despite his incredible speed, skill, and goal-scoring ability, Mbappe has struggled to adapt to the role of a traditional number 9.

Fans and analysts have noticed that Mbappe often drifts out wide or drops deep to receive the ball, rather than staying central and making runs in behind the defense. This has led to criticism from some quarters, who believe that Mbappe’s natural instincts as a winger are hindering his effectiveness as a striker.

While Mbappe has still managed to score plenty of goals for both club and country, there is a sense that he could be even more lethal if he were to fully embrace the role of a striker. Some have suggested that Mbappe could benefit from studying the movements and positioning of more traditional strikers, in order to improve his understanding of the role.

Only time will tell if Mbappe is able to make the necessary adjustments to his game and truly excel as a striker. But for now, it seems that there are still some doubts about whether he has what it takes to lead the line for his team.

  • Harrison Ford hopes that he doesn’t “disappoint” fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo with his performance as Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World

It’s not easy being green, but turning red might be even tougher, especially for Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. As the new Hulk on the block, Ford revealed that he had to face the excessive anger issues of his character alone, as Bruce Banner’s Mark Ruffalo couldn’t be reached for pointers. “He wasn’t available for a consultation. I just had to wing it,” Ford joked to On Demand Entertainment. “I hope he’s not disappointed.”

As far as we know, Ruffalo’s gamma-infused Avenger won’t be stomping by in the upcoming chapter of the MCU, which features Ford’s Ross facing off against Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as the all-new Captain America. It also marks the legendary actor’s first appearance in the franchise after replacing the late William Hurt, who passed away in 2022.

Veteran actor Harrison Ford is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the iconic character Red Hulk in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World. However, Ford has expressed some nervousness about stepping into the superhero world, particularly in regards to his fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo.

In a recent interview, Ford revealed, “I have so much respect for Mark and his portrayal of the Hulk. He has brought such depth and complexity to the character, and I just hope that I can live up to the standard he has set. I don’t want to disappoint him or the fans.”

Fans have been eagerly anticipating Ford’s portrayal of Red Hulk, and many are excited to see how he will bring the character to life on the big screen. With his impressive track record in Hollywood, there’s no doubt that Ford will deliver a performance that will leave audiences in awe.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters next year, and fans can’t wait to see Ford and Ruffalo share the screen as two iconic Marvel characters. Let’s hope that Ford’s fears are unfounded and that he will knock it out of the park as Red Hulk.

  • LeBron James doesn’t take a night off in Lakers’ win over Wizards

LeBron James walked through the hallway outside the Lakers locker room Thursday night and wondered how he was going to be able to mentally engage in the 48 minutes ahead of him.

He and his teammates were tired, the team playing for the third time in four nights across the country and facing the NBA’s worst team. It wasn’t going to be easy to be focused, not against the six-win Washington Wizards.

It’s the reality of the NBA, the grind of the schedule and bad opponents able to force teams into their worst habits.

They were going to have to find a different emotion.

“I liked that we played angry,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said.

With Anthony Davis back in Los Angeles beginning treatment on a strained abdominal muscle, James ensured the Lakers wouldn’t take the night off. James had 24 points and 11 assists in just 27 minutes, the Lakers easily beating the Wizards 134-96 to hand Washington its 16th consecutive loss.

“He was awesome. He was aggressive. He talked. Just his willingness to trust his teammates and create for others and create for himself,” Redick said. “And don’t overlook the fact, by the way, that he’s 40 years old in Year 22 with every accolade under the sun and he comes out on a Thursday night that’s a non-nationally televised game against a team that’s really struggling and he is the tone setter. It’s again, competitive stamina. It’s impressive.”

The Lakers (27-19) led by as many as 42 points as the Wizards (6-41) shot 31.9% from the field. Even without Davis, Gabe Vincent and Dorian Finney-Smith, the Lakers scored a season-high 78 points in the first half. Seven Lakers were in double figures, with Rui Hachimura scoring 22 and Shake Milton adding 21 in his best game as a Laker. With reserves playing the entire fourth quarter, Bronny James got a huge roar when he scored his second field goal of the season while getting fouled. Hachimura celebrated the bucket by wrapping LeBron in a headlock on the bench.

Hachimura said he and the Lakers see how much LeBron cares about his son and how he has encouraged him when he’s gotten limited playing time.

“I knew he wanted that so bad. So I knew like, as soon as he scored it, he was trying to, I think, hold it a little bit,” Hachimura said of LeBron’s reaction. “So that’s why I was like, ‘Come on, bro…’ But yeah, he’s my big brother. So of course, I was happy about it. It was a great moment.”

The game, though, was quickly secondary to good news on Davis, with Redick saying the injury isn’t considered serious. Before the game, Davis was selected by Western Conference coaches as an NBA All-Star for the 10th time. Redick said the Lakers hope Davis returns next week. Jaxson Hayes, starting in his place, scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Finney-Smith, who was dealing with a shoulder contusion, said he hopes to play Saturday night when the Lakers play the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Redick said Vincent also could be back after missing three games.

“I think our guys will be ready to go Saturday night against the Knicks in the Garden,” Redick said. “Hopefully Do’ is available. Hopefully Gabe is available, but if not, next man up and continue to play the right way, which is what we did tonight.”

In a thrilling matchup against the Washington Wizards, LeBron James once again proved why he is one of the greatest players in NBA history. Despite facing a tough opponent, James didn’t take a night off and led the Los Angeles Lakers to a hard-fought victory.

From the opening tip-off, James showcased his incredible skill and determination on both ends of the court. Whether he was driving to the basket for a powerful dunk or setting up his teammates for easy baskets, LeBron was a force to be reckoned with throughout the game.

But it wasn’t just his scoring that made the difference. LeBron also made his presence felt on defense, coming up with key stops and steals to help the Lakers secure the win. His leadership and intensity on the court inspired his teammates to elevate their game and ultimately come out on top.

With this impressive performance, LeBron once again showed why he is considered one of the best players in the league. His relentless work ethic and competitive spirit are unmatched, and it’s clear that he is determined to lead the Lakers to success this season.

As the playoffs approach, LeBron’s performance against the Wizards serves as a reminder that he is always ready to step up when his team needs him most. Fans can rest assured that he won’t be taking any nights off as he continues to chase another championship.

  • Mikey Garcia doesn’t want to see Gervonta Davis fight Shakur Stevenson

Former champion Mikey Garcia chats with Fight Hub TV about what he thinks of the matchup between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Lamont Roach on the horizon, and why he’s not excited about the prospect of Tank fighting Shakur Stevenson in the future. Check out some of what he had to say below.

Garcia on the Tank vs Roach fight

“I think Tank is one of the very best fighters, definitely in the lightweight division. I don’t think Roach would be a huge threat for Tank. Tank is very talented, very skilled, and also very experienced at this point now. He’s fought and seen pretty much every style there is and his power is tremendous where he has that knockout punching power and he has the confidence to do it.

“It’s hard to go against Tank. Again, not to disrespect his opponent Roach but I think Tank is a beast and he’s been proving it every fight and he probably will win this fight as well.”

On a prospective Tank vs Shakur Stevenson fight

“I’m actually not a very big fan of that fight…Now I do believe Shakur Stevenson is a great, great fighter as well. He’s got the skills, he’s got the talent, great boxer, super talented with footwork, with speed, reflexes, counter punching ability, he’s one of the very, very best. But I’m not a fan of that fight because Shakur Stevenson is the kind of fighter that he’s going to fight his fight regardless of what the critics, the fans, or anybody want to see…winning is winning for him.

“But as a fight fan that turns me off. Now as a fighter I applaud him, I understand and give him all the respect for the skills…but as a fight fan that turns me off. I much rather see Tank fight other guys, for example Lomachenko, that I know Lomachenko’s there to fight even though he also has great footwork and speed and reflexes — but he’s there to fight. I much rather see that fight than a Shakur Stevenson fight.

“Shakur Stevenson’s going to be a dull, not as exciting of a matchup and I think that’s why he’s going to have a tough time getting some of these big fights. Until he turns his style a bit and shows up a little more, maybe then he’ll get some of these fights but until then I don’t think Tank fights him or anybody that’s a serious threat. Shakur, again, great fighter as far as skills but not a great fighter for the fans.”

Mikey Garcia doesn’t want to see Gervonta Davis fight Shakur Stevenson

In a recent interview, former world champion Mikey Garcia expressed his disinterest in seeing a potential matchup between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson. Garcia believes that the two fighters are in different weight classes and that they should focus on their respective divisions.

Garcia stated, “I don’t see the point of Davis and Stevenson fighting each other. They are in different weight classes and have different career trajectories. I think it would be better for them to focus on building their own legacies in their respective divisions.”

While both Davis and Stevenson are rising stars in the sport of boxing, Garcia’s opinion highlights the importance of fighters staying in their weight classes and pursuing the best matchups within those divisions. It remains to be seen if a fight between Davis and Stevenson will ever come to fruition, but for now, Garcia believes that it is not a necessary or desired matchup.

  • WWE Doesn’t Need The Rock for WrestleMania 41 to Be a Massive Success | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 7: The Rock makes his entrance during NXT: New Year's Evil at The Shrine Expo Hall on January 7, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by WWE/Getty Images)

    WWE/Getty Images

Even with WrestleMania 41 taking place during Easter weekend this year, the WWE does not need Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for the massive Las Vegas spectacle to be successful.

There is no doubt that WWE advertising an appearance from Johnson would make the event more exciting, especially for older wrestling fans, but between a loaded existing roster and ample legends to recruit for the event, the company is in a good position.

Here are the reasons why WWE wouldn’t be lost without The Rock at WrestleMania.

    Loaded Existing Roster

One of the biggest reasons Johnsons is not needed this year for WrestleMania is also one of the company’s most admirable attributes: its loaded existing main roster. While not true yearly, WWE has enough star power in 2025 to carry it through its biggest show without The Rock.

On the men’s side, Cody Rhodes and Gunther have carried the world titles well, while top names Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, Jey Uso, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, and more have made midcard storylines important all year.

The women’s divisions on both shows have improved with better angles and storytelling, led by Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, Nia Jax, Tiffany Stratton, Bianca Belair, and others. Add in the returns of Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Jade Cargill, and the depth across the main roster is undeniably strong.

With WWE recently adding several championships and putting a renewed focus on existing titles, WrestleMania 42 can be a spectacle highlighting every belt on the roster, with several new champions crowned.

Instead of leaning on legends, let the Royal Rumble winners each main event a night of WrestleMania. Problem solved.

    Other Legends and Debuting
    Superstars

If WWE cannot get The Rock but still insists on leaning on the past to build excitement for the Las Vegas PLE, there are ample options for them to choose from the history books.

From “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar to Trish Stratus and Lita, there are plenty of former WWE Superstars who could be utilized either in a physical capacity as part of a match or as a way to add intrigue to an existing storyline.

Another name guaranteed for the show is John Cena, who holds mainstream star power as well.

Or, instead of depending on stars of the past like The Undertaker and Hulk Hogan, WWE can work on debuting several marquee NXT names and giving them worthy programs leading into the biggest show of the year.

Superstars in the making, like Ethan Page, Wes Lee, Roxanne Perez, Trick Williams, Jordynne Grace, and the tag team of Nathan Frazer and Axiom, should all be given the time that would have been used for The Rock.

    An Unadvertised Arrival

Another distinct possibility is that WWE believes it doesn’t need The Rock as part of the card to draw people in, but could use him in a one-off, unadvertised spot that sets the stage for a full year of storylines.

While Johnson is a director and shareholder in TKO Group Holdings, WWE knows WrestleMania is the sport’s Super Bowl and doesn’t require the legend’s presence to sell tickets or generate interest.

What Triple H and WWE Creative do need, though, is for people to tune into Raw and SmackDown in the weeks following WrestleMania. One way to ensure interest in the premium live event is to have The Rock show up unannounced at the end of Night 2.

In an ideal world, Rhodes would lose his title to Reigns in the 2025 WrestleMania main event. As the new champion is celebrating, Johnson should hit the ring to embrace his cousin, only to hit him with a Rock Bottom and set the tone for the road to WrestleMania 42.

For more wrestling talk, listen to Ring Rust Radio for all of the hot topics or catch the latest episode in the player above (some language NSFW).

As we gear up for WrestleMania 41, there’s been a lot of talk about who will make a special appearance at the event. One name that keeps popping up is none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. While The Rock is undoubtedly a huge draw and a fan favorite, it’s important to remember that WWE doesn’t actually need him to make WrestleMania 41 a massive success.

WrestleMania is the biggest event in the wrestling world, drawing in millions of viewers from around the globe. With or without The Rock, the show is sure to be a hit. WWE has a roster full of talented superstars who are more than capable of putting on a show-stopping performance.

Not to mention, WrestleMania is about more than just one individual. It’s a celebration of the entire wrestling community and a showcase of the incredible talent that WWE has to offer. From the high-flying acrobatics of the cruiserweights to the hard-hitting action of the heavyweights, there’s something for every wrestling fan to enjoy.

So while it would be exciting to see The Rock make an appearance at WrestleMania 41, let’s not forget that the show will be a massive success regardless. The WWE Universe is ready to tune in and witness the magic that only WrestleMania can deliver. So sit back, relax, and get ready for a night of unforgettable moments and jaw-dropping matches.

  • Blake Lively Allegedly Doesn’t Want Justin Baldoni’s Lawyer to Take Her Deposition

    • Kevin Fritz, a lawyer for Justin Baldoni, clamed in a letter to Judge Lewis J. Liman that the actress is objecting to Baldoni’s lead attorney Bryan Freedman taking her deposition in court
    • The letter comes days before a pre-trial conference in the It Ends with Us costars’ legal battle involving claims of sexual harassment, defamation and more
    • PEOPLE is out to Lively’s legal team for comment on the deposition claims

Blake Lively has allegedly requested for Justin Baldoni‘s lead attorney, Bryan Freedman, not to take her deposition in court.

In a letter to Judge Lewis J. Liman filed Thursday, Jan. 30, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, another lawyer for Baldoni, Kevin Fritz, claimed that Lively and Ryan Reynolds‘ legal team “stated their objection to the Wayfarer Parties’ lead counsel conducting the deposition of Blake Lively.”

“Specifically, the Lively Parties’ counsel indicated that they object to Bryan J. Freedman, personally, taking Ms. Lively’s deposition, based upon unspecified statements made by Mr. Freedman,” Fritz wrote. In addition, he claimed that “counsel for the Lively Parties declined” to “elaborate on the grounds for their objection,” when asked to do so by Baldoni’s team.

PEOPLE is out to Lively’s legal team for comment.

Fritz’s letter additionally stated, “We are unaware of any situation that would warrant the deposed party to have a choice in which attorney takes her deposition.”

“Parties to litigation simply do not have the right to dictate which of their opponents’ attorneys may or may not take their deposition or perform any other aspect of the opposing party’s case,” he added.

Lively, 37, sued Wayfarer Studios and Baldoni, plus It Ends with Us lead producer Jamey Heath, Baldoni’s publicist Jennifer Abel, crisis publicist Melissa Nathan and more in December 2024, alleging sexual harassment and a smear campaign launched in retaliation for speaking out about alleged misconduct. Baldoni, 41, has denied the sexual-harassment allegations.

In turn, Baldoni countersued Lively, her husband Reynolds, 48, and their publicist Leslie Sloane, as well as Sloane’s PR firm Vision PR, Inc., on accusations of defamation and extortion.

Both cases in Lively v. Wayfarer Studios et al. are scheduled for trial on March 9, 2026, Judge Liman outlined in an order filed Monday, Jan. 27.

Fritz also stated in his Thursday letter that Baldoni’s team “look forward to further discussing” the deposition “matter” at the upcoming pre-trial conference on Monday, Feb. 3, which has been scheduled to hash out Lively’s prospective request for a gag order.

After Freedman leaked a 10-minute video from the It Ends With Us set earlier this month and announced plans for a website to disclose more, lawyers for Lively motioned for a conference before Judge Liman to address “the appropriate conduct of counsel.”

They wrote in the letter that “federal litigation must be conducted in court and according to the relevant rules of professional conduct” and claimed Freedman’s interviews and statements risked “tainting the jury pool.”

Reynolds and Lively’s legal team also filed a notice on Thursday in accordance with Judge Liman’s order, which outlined the next steps for their federal case.

In their letter submitted to Judge Liman Thursday, Michael J. Gottlieb, an attorney for Lively, Reynolds and Wayfarer Studios LLC, wrote, “The Lively-Reynolds Parties intend to move to dismiss Plaintiffs’ complaint.”

An official motion to request a case dismissal has not yet been filed by Lively and Reynolds, but is presumably forthcoming.

In a recent legal battle, actress Blake Lively is reportedly fighting against having her deposition taken by Justin Baldoni’s lawyer. The Gossip Girl star is embroiled in a lawsuit with Baldoni, a fellow actor and director, and is allegedly attempting to avoid being questioned by his legal counsel.

Speculation is rife as to why Lively is resisting the deposition, with some suggesting that she may have concerns about the impartiality of Baldoni’s lawyer. Others believe that Lively may be trying to protect sensitive information or avoid potential legal pitfalls.

Regardless of the reasons behind Lively’s reluctance, the case continues to unfold with both parties gearing up for a legal showdown. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Why doesn’t Johni Broome get more foul calls?

    (Zach Bland/Auburn Tigers)

OXFORD, Miss. — Welcome back to a special Saturday edition of the mailbag.

When I first asked for questions, before leaving Baton Rouge for Oxford on Friday, I wasn’t 100% sure if I was going to be able to do the mailbag. But I was surprised to get a lot of them in a short amount of time — to the point where I’m having to save several of them for future editions.

There’s a lot to get to here, and there’s only so much time between this getting published and Auburn’s big road game at Ole Miss this afternoon. Because of that, I won’t go nuts with a long introduction here.

Instead, I will just thank you all once again for allowing me to do this job and travel all across the country to cover the No. 1 team in college basketball. You asked a bunch of questions about these Tigers, along with some fun grab bag ones towards the end.

(I’ll also, in case you missed it, repost our Stretch 4 preview of Auburn-Ole Miss here.)

    Let’s go.

@AUBradLaw posted this graphic. I understand efficient offense, but it’s unbelievable to me that Broome doesn’t get at least a few more whistles with the minutes he plays. Why do you think that is?

    MINIVANROADTRIP

If Johni Broome received the whistles that Cooper Flagg gets, would there even be a discussion for POTY?

    Salty

People who have been following me for a while know that I rarely pass on an opportunity to criticize college basketball officiating. I think SEC games are the most unfairly refereed ones in the sport, because the calls don’t seem to 1) stay consistent and 2) reflect that this is a conference with some of the best athletes in the country.

That being said, I personally don’t think the whistle on Johni Broome is egregious. Let me explain.

First of all, Brad did the research there with his table. There’s no disputing those numbers, and they paint a good picture of what’s going on right now. I am pretty surprised that Asa Newell doesn’t draw many trips to the free-throw line, considering how much of his game is offensive rebounds and close-range attempts. The freshman from Georgia is an absolute monster down low.

I think that 2-point field goal attempts per free-throw attempts only tell part of the story with Broome, though. Not all shots from inside the arc are created equal.

Let me be very clear with what I’m about to say next, because I don’t want my words to get twisted: Broome is a tough player. He’s won games for Auburn, even after his injury, with his physicality. The dude takes hits and keeps on going, no doubt about it.

However, when I look at Broome, I see more of a finesse big man than a pure power guy that can oftentimes be a foul magnet. Broome wins with his footwork. He creatively gets good looks inside by the way he moves. He also has a pretty good fadeaway jumper, and he obviously will stretch the floor with shots from time to time.

His style isn’t “runaway freight train at the rim.” It’s old-school, in a way, but it’s also polished and smooth. And being a finesse big isn’t a knock on him at all. He makes it work extremely well, as the dominant numbers show.

Because of that, I think Broome is a little less likely to draw foul calls as much as other touch-heavy frontcourt players. Also, the gap between him and others isn’t quite as large as you might think. According to KenPom, Broome draws an average of 5.0 fouls per 40 minutes. That number goes up to 5.6 in league play, which is 12th in the SEC.

Cooper Flagg, on the other hand, draws 6.3 fouls per 40 minutes. That goes up to 6.9 in ACC play. So, for all intents and purposes, Flagg might draw one more foul per game than Broome — or two at the absolute most. Also: KenPom’s No. 3 player in the National Player of the Year rating, Kansas’ 7-foot-2 center Hunter Dickinson, draws just 3.8 fouls per 40 minutes. Villanova’s Eric Dixon, who Brad has in his table, is right near Broome at 5.4 fouls drawn per 40 minutes.

The gap looks a lot bigger for Flagg, though, because of his free-throw rate of 48.4. Broome is at 30.7. But there are reasons for that. Flagg is Duke’s primary playmaker, and he drives and does a lot more off the dribble than Broome does. He naturally draws more contact because of the amount of downhill work he does. That’s the NBA style of play that makes him such a coveted draft prospect. Flagg does get a pro whistle, and that was very evident in Auburn’s loss at Duke.

Broome does things differently, and it’s worth noting that other elite frontcourt players in college basketball aren’t as big of foul magnets as Flagg is. Since he’s Broome’s top competition for national awards, though, it’s easy to point to his numbers and play the “what if” game. That’s only natural, especially for Auburn fans who want to pump up their team’s star player. I get it. I completely get it.

Should Broome be getting some more trips to the free-throw line? Probably so. I think Auburn has had a weird case of not being able to draw those calls, especially in SEC play. The definition of a shooting foul for Auburn isn’t always the same as its opponent. I’ve noticed that in several games this season, and it’s not just for Broome.

Still, I don’t think Broome is getting massively misjudged when it comes to drawing fouls. His style of play is different than Flagg, and I see Broome’s ability to creatively create space with his move set as a huge reason why he’s one of the best players in the country. He’s not just putting his head down and trying to get a whistle. There have been top centers in years past that have done that. He’s a more well-rounded player than that, and it shows.

You can definitely point to examples in certain games this season where Broome has been hacked with no foul call. I won’t dispute that. I will say, though, that the way Broome goes about his business is going to make it less likely that he gets that same exact superstar whistle.

I know the theme has been one game at a time, which it has to be in this conference grind, especially when you’re the hunted team at the top.

Outside of press conference coach speak, do you sense the players and coaches trying to find the balance of one game at a time locked in approach vs. the macro goals of chasing another SEC title / the pressure of knowing March is coming?

I can only imagine the desire to get the Yale taste out of their mouths and make a serious run in a crapshoot like tournament that doesn’t always (usually) crown the best regular-season team.

It’d almost be easy for the team to hit a mid-conference lull with all these factors at play, so just curious if being around team you notice any of those waves throughout the varying months of the long season?

Johni Broome is a dominant force on the basketball court, consistently putting up impressive numbers and impacting the game in a variety of ways. However, one question that often arises is why Broome doesn’t seem to get as many foul calls as other players of his caliber.

There could be a few reasons for this discrepancy. One possibility is that Broome’s style of play doesn’t lend itself to drawing fouls. He is known for his physicality and aggressiveness, which can sometimes make it difficult for officials to determine if contact is a foul or just part of the game.

Additionally, Broome may not be as vocal or demonstrative as other players when it comes to calling attention to fouls. Some players are more adept at drawing fouls by exaggerating contact or drawing attention to it, whereas Broome may simply play through the contact without drawing attention to it.

It’s also possible that officials may not be as familiar with Broome’s game or tendencies, leading to a lack of calls in his favor. As he continues to establish himself as a top player in the league, it’s likely that officials will become more attuned to his style of play and begin to call fouls in his favor more consistently.

Overall, while it may be frustrating for fans to see Broome not getting as many foul calls as they believe he deserves, it’s important to remember that officiating is subjective and can vary from game to game. As Broome continues to develop and refine his game, it’s likely that he will start to get more of the calls that he deserves.

  • Reese Witherspoon Says Famous British Actress ‘Doesn’t Like’ Her Anymore: Evidence From Fans Reveals Kate Winslet as Her Former Friend | Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon | Just Jared: Celebrity News and Gossip

Reese Witherspoon has made headlines by revealing that a famous British actress will no longer talk to her and we’ve found evidence from a fan site in 2007 that identifies that actress as Kate Winslet.

The Oscar-winning actress opened up about the falling out in a new interview alongside her You’re Cordially Invited co-star Will Ferrell.

Reese asked Will, “Have you ever had this moment where you gave a speech and then like three years later, you’re like, ‘Why did I do that? Why did I do that?’”

“I have one. It literally haunts me,” Reese began.

Keep reading to find out more…

“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well but she was a very serious, proper actress, she asked me to give her an award. But I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her,” Reese said. “The tone was British and elegant and classy. And I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?!’ I’m still embarrassed about it.”

“We’re not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding — we’re not friends anymore,” Reese added. “I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. Yeah. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”

Well, we tracked down the transcript of the speech and she gave it while honoring Kate Winslet at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in November 2007.

Reese and Kate were seemingly friendly already as they were seen greeting each other at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards in January 2007.

So, what did Reese say in that speech? The transcript was posted on a fan site back in 2007.

“I always wanted to be a European movie star, wear giant sunglasses, elaborate neck scarves, smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, and have savoir faire and gravitas,” Reese said. “Imagine my good fortune when Kate Winslet moved into my neighborhood, rang my door bell and said, (insert British accent here) ‘Dahling, Sam is off shooting, and I believe our children are the same age. Could they possibly have a play date and oh, by the way, it’s almost 9 o’clock and I’ve had nothing to do drink, do you have any wine?’”

Reese said that she admires Kate‘s “fearlessness. When I saw her in Iris and she took off all her clothes and jumped into that lake, I thought, ‘Wow, I bet that lake is really cold.’ And then I thought, ‘Wow, There’s an actor without fear.’”

Reese teased that she couldn’t tell her personal stories about Kate because “they’re all too bawdy or tawdry or drunken to tell.”

While the exact quote isn’t available, the fan site noted that among the “too embarrassing” stories were “the time they contemplated laser hair removal and… or that time on the freeway when they pulled over and.. or that really funny thing that happened when they were both in their underwear.”

The laser hair removal comment gave Kate‘s identity away.

While it doesn’t sound like Reese and Kate ever reconciled their friendship, based on the new comments, they did reunite many years later.
