‘Dog Man’ and ‘Captain Underpants’ creator Dav Pilkey calls the PNW home
If your kids are among the millions who devour the “Dog Man” graphic novels, then book it to the movies. Dog Man and his lovable friends (and foes) are making their big screen debut this year, and this feature film is a delight for kids and grownups alike.
I had the chance to attend an early screening of the movie and brought along my fun-sized film critic: a gummy bear and popcorn-fueled 3-year-old.
Since the reading series is geared for ages 6+ (and my son’s still in ABC mode), we entered the theater with little knowledge of the “Dog Man” universe. But you don’t need to read the books in order to enjoy this film (although, you’ll probably want to after)!
The visual style of DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” has a nostalgic, hand-drawn feel that fans of the graphic novels will recognize and appreciate. As an uninitiated viewer, I found the animation to be a refreshing detour from the overly CGI’d look of other kid movies (looking at you, human teeth on Sonic). I’ll admit the “Dog Man” trailer wasn’t blowing my mind, but the film itself is endearing, action-packed and it was neat how closely the animation matches its source material.
I won’t spill any spoilers to the 89-minute ride, but to set the scene, Dog Man is part dog, surgically fused to his human officer, and “all hero.” Pete Davidson voices the film’s first ‘villain,’ Petey the World’s Most Evilest Cat. Davidson brings the right amount of chaos to the role; you’ll just need to forgive/forget that Petey and other non-people can talk and Dog Man can’t. Still, Dog Man (barked by director Peter Hastings himself) conveys plenty of emotion. Enough that my toddler looked up and told me, “Dog Man is sad,” during a glum time for our hero. But chin up, kiddo, there’s lots of happy ahead. Namely, in the adorable introduction of Li’l Petey. I audibly “awww’d” when Li’l Petey first came on-screen.
The voice cast includes Lil Rel Howery (Chief), Isla Fisher (reporter Sarah Hatoff), Ricky Gervais (Flippy), Stephen Root (Grampa) and Cheri Oteri (Mayor). As any good kid movie should have, there are plenty of moments to garner genuine grown-up laughs – mine came from Sarah Hatoff, Seamus and disgruntled assistant Butler – but this film stays in its lane as a feel-good graphic comic book come-to-life(ish).
Age 3 isn’t the target audience for “Dog Man,” but it held my squirrely toddler’s attention (along with the aforementioned popcorn and gummy bears). School-age kids will be wagging their tails to see it, while their guardians enjoy a colorful 89-minute break from the outside world.
“Dog Man” also has a special connection to our region.
Dav Pilkey is the author and illustrator of “Dog Man” and “Captain Underpants,” another wildly popular series that has been adapted into a feature film and Netflix series.
Clearly, Pilkey has great taste since he resides here in Washington state!
Pilkey’s bio explains that he “lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, but his writing is inspired by children and adults around the world. His stories explore universally positive themes that celebrate the triumph of the good-hearted.”
Pilkey shares that he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia as a child. Relegated to frequent school timeouts, the hallway became the birthplace of “Captain Underpants” and “Dog Man.” His childhood creativity flourished into a global sensation, and Pilkey takes special care to acknowledge how our differences make us extraordinary.
While sketching his “Dog Man” character 80-HD (a deliberate nod to ADHD), Pilkey narrates, “I created this character to show that thinking and learning differently can not only be an advantage, it might just be a superpower.”
After the movie, I got an official quote from my young critic. When I asked his favorite part, he said, “The Man Dog part.” Did he just sniff out a sequel? Your move, Dav Pilkey.

‘Dog Man’ To Lead Box Office With $20 Million; ‘Companion’ $8M
For the first time in 2025, the box office is going to have some sort of pulse as Universal’s DreamWorks Animation title Dog Man is set to send families back into theaters after 2024’s holiday Mufasa-Wicked juggernaut with an opening in excess of $20 million-plus.
Booked at 3,800 theaters, Dog Man is based on the Dav Pilkey Scholastic graphic novels that have sold more than 60 million copies and have been translated into 47 languages. He’s also the author behind the Captain Underpants books; that brand was adapted into a 2017 20th Century Fox movie that opened to $23.8M and legged out to $73.9M stateside.
In Dog Man, after a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained but life-saving surgery fuses them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve — and fetch, sit and roll over. As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief (Lil Rel Howery, Get Out, Free Guy), he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson; Saturday Night Live, The King of Staten Island). Petey’s latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff. Things get complicated, though, when Lil Petey forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man.
Emmy winner Peter Hastings directs. The film is produced by Karen Foster (Spirit Untamed), who served as co-producer on DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.
Currently, Dog Man aimed at young boys and girls and is tracking ala Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie ($22.7M opening) and DC League of Super Pets ($23M). Previews start Thursday at 2 p.m.
New Line Cinema
Also hitting theaters is New Line’s horror movie Companion from BoulderLight Pictures, the producers behind the micro horror hit Barbarian. The R-rated $10M production written and directed by Drew Hancock (scribe of TV series Suburgatory) has a $29M P&A spend and is expected to do between $8M-$10M, with a chance for upside based on its great 92% Rotten Tomatoes critics score. Previews start Thursday at 3 p.m.
Starring Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid and Harvey Guillén, the pic follows an enigmatic young woman, Iris, who creates havoc for her friends during a weekend trip to a lakeside estate. To say any more would spoil the twists and turns of the movie. Pic is booked at 3,200 locations and will play in Imax, Dolby Cinema, PLFs, dine-ins and drive-ins. Of those who are planning to pay to see Companion on the big screen, it’s men and women under 35, per Quorum. We’ll see if this film catches any heat.
Briarcliff Entertainment also has the U.S. military movie about the North Korea conflict. Valiant One, from director Steve Barnett, in 1,500 locations.

A spin-off of Dav Pilkey’s phenomenally popular juvenile book series Captain Underpants, Dog Man is the movie to beat this weekend. Our numbers are conservative, with several members in our forecasting team thinking this title can seriously overperform. A surprise overperformance above $35M isn’t off the table, but we’re currently keeping pace with our original tracking in the $25 to $35M range. With no direct family competition, Dog Man will easily finish the weekend on top. Early reviews trickling in after the film premiered at France’s Festival de l’Alpe d’Huez seem to be leaning majority positive/fresh, though this is about as review-proof as family films get. Dreamworks’ first Captain Underpants movie in 2017 earned an 87% Certified Fresh. As an added bonus, the studio is attaching a short set within the world of The Bad Guys as a prelude/ad for The Bad Guys 2 which drops in August.
Cons
Anything under a $20M opening on this one will be a disappointment, although in typical recent Dreamworks style they have outsourced the animation on Dog Man to partner studios to keep costs down. Plushes, popcorn buckets, and soda toppers are just some of the merch theater chains like Regal have in store with the anticipated family onslaught, but is Dog Man too much of an ancillary property? Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie took in less than $100M stateside ($73.9M) when it opened in June 2017, so to expect Dog Man to be the Minions to Captain Underpants‘ Despicable Me might be optimistic.
2. Companion

Weekend Range: $8M – $12M
Showtime Market Share: 12%Pros
The AI-run-amok genre continues to expand with Companion, a film in which a companion sex robot gains sentience. Zach Cregger of the sleeper hit Barbarian flexes his producer muscles on this one, while star Sophie Thatcher continues to evolve into the scream queen du jour (The Boogeyman, Maxxxine, Heretic). Reviews for this title are pristine at a current 94% on RT, which gives it a lot of momentum with the horror crowd.
Cons
Companion could conceivably overperform as high as $15M, but we’re being conservative in our forecast to keep pace with recent horror performances. If word of mouth delivers, this one can leg out in the coming weeks, but Presence had 90% RT going into last weekend and failed to ignite. A good comp would be 2015’s experimental pleasure robot thriller Ex Machina, although that one built up slow with two weeks of limited platforming before going wide to ultimately do $25.4M domestic. Based on trailers Companion appears to have more levity and may be more of a crowd pleaser.
TOSS UP
3. Mufasa: The Lion King

Weekend Range: $4M – $6M
Showtime Market Share: 8%Pros
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King continues to leg it out into the bleak January months, collecting $8.59M to take the #2 spot this past weekend. That was only a 29% drop from Frame 5, with the current domestic total at $220.96M and $627.99M globally. We think Mufasa can stay in the top three, but it’s really down to how much business it can keep with new competition from Dog Man.
Cons
The family box office is going to the dogs. Dreamworks’ Dog Man is looking to not only usurp the family audience this frame but likely well into spring when Disney’s Snow White enters the woods. The lions have had their day and will head onto streaming shortly. If Dog Man overperforms this weekend, we think Flight Risk can sneak up to take third place.
3. Flight Risk
Lionsgate | Week 2
Weekend Range: $4M – $6M
Showtime Market Share: 9%Pros
Lionsgate’s B-movie programmer Flight Risk took the top spot last week with $11.58M, down from the initial $12M estimates. Hopefully it can use some of that #1 movie in America momentum to earn solid in Frame 2. Right now it’s a coin toss as to whether this or Mufasa will take third place.
Cons
It’s more than fair to say that both director Mel Gibson and star Mark Wahlberg have seen better days in their careers. A “C” CinemaScore plus 25% Rotten Tomatoes critical means the word is out and it is not complimentary.
This weekend is shaping up to be an exciting one at the box office, with the highly anticipated animated film DOG MAN expected to debut above $20 million. Based on the popular children’s book series by Dav Pilkey, DOG MAN follows the adventures of a half-dog, half-man superhero as he fights crime and saves the day.With its charming characters, witty humor, and heartwarming story, DOG MAN has been generating buzz among audiences of all ages. ‘Dog Man’ Review: Best Friends Forever
The hero of the animated feature “Dog Man” has his origin in a twisted bit of business that wouldn’t be out of place in “RoboCop”: A bomb injures a policeman named Officer Knight and his canine partner, Greg. To make the best of the organs that are still working, the medical team sews the dog’s head onto his human buddy’s body. Dog Man, as he is now known, returns home to an abandoned house. His girlfriend has left him for a new guy — and a new dog.
Nothing that follows in “Dog Man” is nearly as grim as that setup might suggest, and frankly neither is that setup, which traffics in the kind of body-twisting absurdism that will be familiar to any devotee of Wile E. Coyote cartoons. Nevertheless, that kickoff offers a foretaste of the film’s demented sense of humor, derived from the wildly successful graphic novel series of the same name by Dav Pilkey, the author of “Captain Underpants.”
