  • Carlos Alcaraz tries for his first indoor title, Elena Rybakina pushes restart, and a U.S. field dominates in Texas

Elena Rybakina pushes restart, this time without Goran Ivanisevic

The early days of January looked a new dawn for Rybakina. She had hired a new and experienced coach in Goran Ivanisevic, and, just as importantly, seemed to have parted ways with her old coach, Stefano Vukov, who has been provisionally suspended from the WTA Tour after allegations of abuse.

But any thoughts of a fresh start faded quickly, when she asked Vukov to join her in Australia. Soon Goran was gone, and Rybakina was knocked out of the year’s first Slam by eventual champ Madison Keys.

This week, she’ll make her return, coach-free, at the Abu Dhabi Open, the first event of February’s sandy swing through the Saudi peninsula. Rybkina is the top seed, followed by Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina. Badosa’s semifinal in Melbourne makes her a player to watch again.

Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of the tennis world, is set to compete for his first indoor title at the upcoming tournament. The young Spaniard has been making waves on the ATP tour with his impressive performances and is eager to add another trophy to his collection.

Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina is looking to push the restart button on her season after a string of disappointing results. The Kazakh player has shown flashes of brilliance in the past and will be hoping to find her form once again as she gears up for the upcoming matches.

In a separate event, a U.S. field dominates in Texas as American players showcase their talent and skills on the court. With a strong contingent of players representing the United States, fans can expect some thrilling matches and fierce competition as the players battle it out for the title.

Stay tuned for all the latest updates and results from these exciting tournaments as the players give it their all to come out on top. Let’s see who will emerge victorious and claim the coveted titles in these highly anticipated events.

  • LeBron James dominates as Lakers rip Knicks who also lose OG Anunoby to injury

The Knicks’ first loss in six games could prove doubly costly.

LeBron James recorded a triple-double Saturday night in what potentially could be his final career game at Madison Square Garden, and the Knicks couldn’t overcome an injury to two-way forward OG Anunoby as their five-game winning streak came to an end with a 128-112 loss to the Lakers.

The defeat was exacerbated by Anunoby suffering a noncontact injury and limping to the locker room with what the Knicks later termed a sprained right foot after he dropped to one knee upon receiving a pass on the perimeter 1:22 into the third quarter.

LeBron James, who had 33 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds, slams home a dunk during the Knicks’ 128-112 loss to the Lakers on Feb. 1, 2025. Jason Szenes for New York Post

The 40-year-old James registered his 122nd career triple-double with 33 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for the Lakers (28-19), who were without injured All-Star center Anthony Davis.

LeBron’s son, rookie Bronny James, even made his MSG debut and scored late in the game after the crowd was chanting his name.

“It speaks to who he is and his career,” Tom Thibodeau said about LeBron James before the game. “Twenty-[two] years to do it the way he’s done it, everywhere he’s been, if he’s on the team they’re a threat. So they always have a chance.

“Obviously Anthony Davis is a huge part of that, as well. But it’s just the way [James] can bring out the best, not only out of himself, but the people who are around him.”

Josh Hart had 26 points, 13 rebounds and 11 against the team that drafted him in 2017 to notch his seventh triple-double of the season.

But leading scorers Jalen Brunson (17 points) and Karl-Anthony Towns (11) combined to shoot 10-for-30 from the floor for the Knicks (32-17). Precious Achiuwa contributed 15 points and 15 boards off the bench.

The Knicks’ remaining strength of schedule entering the game was the highest in the Eastern Conference, with an opponents’ combined winning percentage of .526 over the final 34 games, and tied for fourth-hardest overall in the league, according to Tankathon.

Thibodeau’s team posted a strong finish to complete January with a 9-6 record, and they already had taken care of the Kings, Grizzlies and Nuggets with a fifth straight formidable foe, the Rockets, slated to finish off the five-game homestand Monday night.

Still, James’ teams now have posted a 24-9 record in 33 career games at the Garden in the regular season in his 22-year NBA career. He also played in one playoff series against the Knicks in 2012 with the Heat.

After receiving a respectful ovation during pregame warmups, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer got to the rim right away and scored the first points of the game before adding two assists and a midrange bucket as the Lakers grabbed an early 17-10 lead.

The Knicks pulled even at 23-all on Precious Achiuwa’s three-point play, and the sides were tied 32-32 through 12 minutes.

James finished the period with 13 points and Rui Hachimura had 12 of his 21 points, while five different players netting at least five points for the Knicks, led by seven by Anunoby.

Towns’ 3-pointer gave the Knicks a short-lived two-point lead midway through the second, but former Nets forward Dorian Finney-Smith responded with back-to-back treys to put the Lakers back on top en route to a 59-54 edge at intermission.

After Anunoby departed early in the third, the Lakers pushed their cushion to nine on three free throws by Austin Reaves (27 points).

Miles McBride converted a four-point play before James answered with a triple from the corner.

Hart recorded his 10th assist with a bounce pass to Achiuwa for a dunk and buried a 30-footer at the buzzer to pull the Knicks within 91-89 entering the final period.

But the Lakers opened the fourth on a 13-4 spurt, and Gabe Vincent’s second 3-pointer of the quarter gave them 109-97 advantage with 8:10 remaining.

Hart’s transition dunk off a steal cut the deficit to seven just past the midpoint, but James sank another 3-pointer to get the Lakers’ lead back to double digits.

LeBron James dominates as Lakers rip Knicks who also lose OG Anunoby to injury

In a highly anticipated matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks, LeBron James put on a show as he led the Lakers to a dominant victory. The Lakers came out firing on all cylinders, with James showcasing his elite scoring and playmaking abilities.

Not only did James put up impressive numbers, but he also played a crucial role in getting his teammates involved and setting the tone for the game. The Lakers’ defense was also on point, stifling the Knicks’ offense and forcing turnovers.

Unfortunately for the Knicks, the night took a turn for the worse as OG Anunoby suffered a devastating injury during the game. The loss of Anunoby was a huge blow to the Knicks, as he has been a key contributor on both ends of the floor.

Despite the loss of Anunoby, the Knicks fought hard until the final buzzer, but ultimately fell short against the Lakers. The Lakers’ victory was a testament to their talent and depth, with James leading the charge and proving once again why he is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Overall, it was a thrilling game that had fans on the edge of their seats, but in the end, it was LeBron James and the Lakers who emerged victorious.

  • Mike Green Dominates Senior Bowl Drills With Insane Bull Rush Display

For the standout Group of Five players who dominated their level of competition, the Senior Bowl and other pre-NFL Draft all-star circuits are a perfect opportunity for them to prove they can compete no matter the opponent or the setting.

Marshall Thundering Herd star edge rusher Mike Green took that opportunity by the horns in a 1-on-1 rep with Oregon Ducks tackle Josh Conerly Jr., showing why he could have played at any level … and maybe why he should be a no-brainer Day 1 pick.

    CFN NFL Mock Draft Simulator
College Football Network’s NFL Mock Draft Simulator is a tool that allows you to control the action of the upcoming NFL Draft for 1 to 32 teams by selecting your favorite college athletes across all seven rounds.

Green was one of the most highly anticipated invitees at the 2025 Senior Bowl, and it did not take long for him to establish his own signature moment that will surely stick in the minds of those in attendance and fans online alike.

In an O-line/D-line 1-on-1 drill, the Marshall pass rusher lined up against Conerly — who gave up just two sacks in his Oregon career — and put him in the dirt, signaling his strength and power in an eye-popping bull rush display.

This caught people’s eyes immediately, with one user saying, “This Mike Green rush will be making the rounds.”

One fan couldn’t help but tag his favorite NFL team’s head coach, hoping he would be just as awe-inspired as the rest of us:

Others responded positively about Green’s all-around status at the all-star event, saying this display should further solidify his standing as an invitee.

This isn’t the only big-time play he has made, as he showed his proficiency as a pass-rusher off the edge in a previous rep on a live play:

Across Division I (FBS and FCS), Green ranked first in sacks, third in QB hits, and 10th in pressures, an absurd level of production that warrants the attention of everyone in the NFL Draft community.

College Sports Network’s Will Helms highlighted Green’s standing as an NFL Draft prospect in his scouting profile, projecting him for a potential role as an “edge-rushing specialist with three-down potential.”

“If your team needs an elite pass-rusher, look no further than Mike Green,” Helms said. “His ceiling is as high as any prospect in this draft class and he has the potential to put up double-digit sacks from the start.

“There’s sure to be an NFL learning curve, as he adjusts to a more complex system and higher variety of alignments. That being said, his pass-rushing arsenal is elite and his bend is borderline generational, and those things translate. Even if his real play weight is closer to 240 or 245 pounds, he has the ability to wreck offensive gameplans.”

Mike Green, a standout defensive lineman, turned heads at the Senior Bowl with his dominant performance during drills. Green showcased his impressive bull rush technique, overpowering offensive linemen with his strength and agility.

During one-on-one drills, Green consistently pushed his opponents back with a relentless bull rush, displaying his ability to disrupt the pocket and create pressure on the quarterback. His explosive first step and powerful hand placement allowed him to control the line of scrimmage and make plays in the backfield.

Green’s impressive showing at the Senior Bowl solidified his status as one of the top defensive prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft. With his combination of size, speed, and technique, he is sure to be a force to be reckoned with at the next level.

  • BBNBA: Nick Richards dominates in Suns debut, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gets revenge

As a Kentucky who has followed his career since his high school recruitment, it is hard not to look at 7-foot, 245-pound Nick Richards like a proud parent. It took a few years for his potential to flourish at Kentucky, and the NBA was no different. However now, in his fifth year in the league, Richards has become a coveted trade asset and did not disappoint his new teammates after the Hornets sent him to Phoenix. In his first game as a Sun on Saturday, Big Blue Nation’s favorite Jamaican came off the bench and put up a monster double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Richards, who wears No. 2 for the Suns because rookie Oso Ighodaro wears No. 4, was extremely efficient getting to those numbers in a game where Phoenix beat Detroit 125-121. He shot 7-8 from the field and 7-9 from the free-throw line. He also added on a steal and an assist.

Not bad for someone who doesn’t know where this home arena’s locker rooms are yet.

Rumors suggest the Suns are still active in the trade market, so Richards and Booker could welcome some new faces to the Valley before the February 6th deadline.

Speaking of Devin Booker, the man with the best signature shoe on the market right now has been putting those kicks to work. Book has scored at least 30 points in six of his last seven games, helping propel the Suns to a 5-2 record over that stretch.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the best player on Planet Earth right now

That headline is not hyperbole. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an absolute phenom and somehow continuing to get better. In the much-anticipated rematch between the NBA’s two best teams, SGA’s OKC Thunder and the Cleveland Cavaliers led by former Lousiville Cardinal Donovan Mitchell, Gilgeous-Alexander got revenge for his team’s loss from eight days earlier.

    And it was convincing.

Shai racked up 40 points, eight assists, and two steals as the Thunder routed the Cavs 134-114. It makes the previous loss to Cleveland OKC’s only loss in a game where SGA played since December 1st. That little caveat is important because Gilgeous-Alexander missed his Friday game with a sprained wrist.

“[His wrist] was fine this morning and then came to the arena and was a little bit sore,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. He is not expected to miss extended time, but this was the first game SGA sat out all season long. Look for him to be back soon and for the Thunder to keep rolling.

    Other BBNBA Notes since Thursday

Let’s take a look at BBNBA’s other top performers, aside from Nick Richards, since we last checked in on Thursday.

    • Rob Dillingham has shifted his way back into the Minnesota Timberwolves’ rotation. After sitting out 12 straight games, Dillingham had games of nine and 12 points back to back this week. In a post-game interview alongside the team’s star Anthony Edwards, Rob gave credit to the Ant-Man for telling him to just keep shooting.
    • Justin Edwards followed up his explosive 25-point breakout game with a 10-point outing the very next day. He only had four points in the Sixers’ loss to the Pacers on Saturday, but it looks like the former Kentucky wing might have found himself a spot in the rotation.
    • Malik Monk has settled into his new starting role well. Monk put up 26 points in Sacramento’s win over Houston, bumping up his scoring average to 24.1 points over his last six games. His teammate, De’Aaron Fox has been his usual self amidst trade rumors.

In a thrilling night of BBNBA action, former Kentucky Wildcat Nick Richards made a statement in his debut with the Phoenix Suns. The 6’11” center showcased his skills as he dominated in the paint, finishing with a double-double and leading the Suns to a decisive victory.

Richards’ performance drew praise from fans and analysts alike, with many noting his impressive footwork, shot-blocking ability, and high basketball IQ. The young big man proved that he can be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA, and his future looks bright in Phoenix.

Meanwhile, in a highly anticipated matchup, former Kentucky standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander faced off against a team that had traded him away earlier in his career. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard came out with a vengeance, putting on a show with his scoring and playmaking skills.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s revenge game was a sight to behold, as he torched his former team with a career-high scoring performance and led the Thunder to a stunning upset victory. The young guard’s determination and talent were on full display, proving once again why he is considered one of the rising stars in the league.

Overall, it was a night of stellar performances from former Kentucky players in the NBA, showcasing the talent and potential that these players possess. With players like Nick Richards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the charge, the future looks bright for the BBNBA.

  • No. 4 Ohio State advances to 11-0, dominates No. 24 Purdue 34-10

    The Buckeyes remain golden.

Unlike its down-to-the-wire win against No. 17 Rutgers, Ohio State (11-0, 3-0 Big Ten) left no doubt against No. 25 Purdue (8-3, 1-2 Big Ten), dominating the Boilermakers 34-10 Saturday at the Covelli Center.

But it was Purdue who struck first, as undefeated No. 1 Matt Ramos edged No. 11 Brendan McCrone in a narrow 3-1 decision.

However, it didn’t take long for the Buckeyes to get on the board, as No. 10 Nic Bouzakis won and got to bust out the red beanie.

The red beanie, which Bouzakis wore post-match isn’t just a celebration after triumph—it’s a tribute to his brother, Greco, who passed away from cancer in 2016.

“Recognizing Greco was meaningful today,” Ohio State head coach Tom Ryan said. “[Nick’s] story is pretty powerful for him and the program. Those beanies have a bigger, deeper meaning than just Nick throwing a hat on after a match.”

Following the major decision from Bouzakis, two-time All-American and No. 1 Jesse Mendez continued his dominance, improving to 19-0 on the season with a 13-2 major decision over Purdue’s Greyson Clark, which also extended the Buckeyes’ lead to 8-3.

Ohio State maintained its momentum at 149 pounds as No. 9 Dylan D’Emilio pinned Isaac Ruble, securing the first fall victory of the meet and stretching the Buckeyes’ lead to 14-3.

Purdue answered back at 157 pounds before the break, though.

No. 7 Joey Blaze defeated No. 17 Sammy Sasso in a 5-1 decision, cutting the Buckeyes’ lead to 14-6. The Covelli Center crowd voiced their displeasure, pleading for stalling calls against Blaze, who responded by taunting the Buckeye faithful as boos filled the arena.

After intermission, Ohio State responded emphatically with back-to-back fall victories. No. 9 Paddy Gallagher and No. 6 Ryder Rogotzke delivered dominant performances at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, pushing the lead to an insurmountable 26-6. Gallagher, who had given up an early takedown, executed a reversal that led to his second pin of the season.

“Now that I’m up a weight, I feel a lot better,” Gallagher said. “I have a lot of trust in my cardio, so if I give up a takedown, it doesn’t really matter.”

No. 19 Rogotzke followed with a decision victory at 184 pounds against Orlando Cruz. Purdue finally responded at 197 pounds, as Ben Vanadia secured a 17-5 major decision against Ohio State’s Gavin Bell. Bell, who typically competes at 184 pounds, wrestled up due to an injury sustained by Seth Shumate in practice Friday.

“We thought it would be best to sit [Seth] and rest him,” Ryan said. “We’ve got a big couple of weeks ahead against the upper echelon of college wrestling.”

The Buckeyes capped off their dominant performance with a 19-4 technical fall victory by heavyweight No. 7 Nick Feldman, sealing a commanding 34-10 final.

Next, Ohio State will face a significant test Saturday when it travels to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to take on No. 2 Iowa.

Gallagher said the magnitude of the matchup won’t be underestimated by the Buckeyes.

“Not everyone gets to compete in Carver-Hawkeye Arena,” Gallagher said. “It’s the craziest place to compete, and we’re looking forward to it. We think we can win.”

In a highly anticipated matchup, No. 4 Ohio State proved why they are a force to be reckoned with as they dominated No. 24 Purdue with a final score of 34-10. The Buckeyes improved their record to an impressive 11-0, showcasing their talent and determination on the field.

From the start, Ohio State set the tone with their strong defense and explosive offense. Quarterback Justin Fields led the charge, throwing for multiple touchdowns and making key plays to keep the Buckeyes ahead. The defense also stepped up, shutting down Purdue’s offense and forcing turnovers to give their team the edge.

Overall, Ohio State’s performance was a testament to their skill and teamwork. With this win, they have solidified their spot as a top contender in college football and are now one step closer to a spot in the playoffs. Buckeye fans have plenty to cheer about as their team continues to impress week after week.

Ivica Zubac led the Los Angeles Clippers to a win against the Lakers on Sunday, scoring 21 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. He also contributed three blocks and played for 35 minutes. The Clippers won the game with a score of 116-102.

Ivica Zubac Dominates with 19 Rebounds in Clippers’ Win Over Lakers (1/19/25)

In a highly anticipated matchup between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers, Ivica Zubac stole the show with an impressive performance on the boards. The 7-foot center grabbed a whopping 19 rebounds to help lead the Clippers to a 112-105 victory over their crosstown rivals.

Zubac’s dominance on the glass was a key factor in the Clippers’ win, as he consistently outworked the Lakers’ big men to secure crucial rebounds on both ends of the court. His strong presence in the paint also helped limit the Lakers’ second-chance opportunities and gave the Clippers an edge in the battle for possession.

In addition to his rebounding prowess, Zubac also contributed offensively with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, showcasing his efficiency in the paint. His all-around performance was crucial in helping the Clippers secure a statement win over the Lakers and solidify their position as a top contender in the Western Conference.

With Zubac’s dominant display on the boards, the Clippers now have a valuable weapon in their frontcourt rotation as they look to make a deep playoff run. As the season progresses, Zubac’s continued success will be key to the Clippers’ success, and fans can expect more standout performances from the talented big man in the games to come.

  • Mizuki Hiruta Dominates in her U.S. Debut and Omar Trinidad Wins Too at Commerce

Bob Santos, the 2022 Sports Illustrated and The Ring magazine Trainer of the Year, is a busy fellow. On Feb. 1, fighters under his tutelage will open and close the show on the four-bout main portion of the Prime Video PPV event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Jeison Rosario continues his comeback in the lid-lifter, opposing Jesus Ramos. In the finale, former Cuban amateur standout David Morrell will attempt to saddle David Benavidez with his first defeat. Both combatants in the main event have been chasing 168-pound kingpin Canelo Alvarez, but this bout will be contested for a piece of the light heavyweight title.

When the show is over, Santos will barely have time to exhale. Before the month is over, one will likely find him working the corner of Dainier Pero, Brian Mendoza, Elijah Garcia, and perhaps others.

Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) turned 28 last month. He is in the prime of his career. However, a lot of folk rate Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) a very live dog. At last look, Benavidez was a consensus 7/4 (minus-175) favorite, a price that betokens a very competitive fight.

Bob Santos, needless to say, is confident that his guy can upset the odds. “I have worked with both,” he says. “It’s a tough fight for David Morrell, but he has more ways to victory because he’s less one-dimensional. He can go forward or fight going back and his foot speed is superior.”

Benavidez’s big edge, in the eyes of many, is his greater experience. He captured the vacant WBC 168-pound title at age 20, becoming the youngest super middleweight champion in history. As a pro, Benavidez has answered the bell for 148 rounds compared with only 54 for Morrell, but Bob Santos thinks this angle is largely irrelevant.

“Sure, I’d rather have pro experience than amateur experience,” he says, “but if you look at Benavidez’s record, he fought a lot of soft opponents when he was climbing the ladder.”

True. Benavidez, who turned pro at age 16, had his first seven fights in Mexico against a motley assortment of opponents. His first bout on U.S. soil occurred in his native Pheonix against an opponent with a 1-6-2 record.

While it’s certainly true that Morrell, 26, has yet to fight an opponent the caliber of Caleb Plant, he took up boxing at roughly the same tender age as Benavidez and earned his spurs in the vaunted Cuban amateur system, eventually defeating elite amateurs in international tournaments.

“If you look at his [pro] record, you will notice that [Morrell] has hardly lost a round,” says Santos of the fighter who captured an interim title in only his third professional bout with a 12-round decision over Guyanese veteran Lennox Allen.

Bob Santos is something of a late bloomer. He was around boxing for a long time, assisting such notables as Joe Goossen, Emanuel Steward, and Ronnie Shields before becoming recognized as one of the sport’s top trainers.

A native of San Jose, he grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood but not in a household where Spanish was spoken. “I know enough now to get by,” he says modestly. He attended James Lick High School whose most famous alumnus is Heisman winning and Super Bowl winning quarterback Jim Plunkett. “We worked in the same apricot orchard when we were kids,” says Santos. “Not at the same time, but in the same field.”

After graduation, he followed his father’s footsteps into construction work, but boxing was always beckoning. A cousin, the late Luis Molina, represented the U.S. as a lightweight in the 1956 Melbourne Summer Olympics, and was good enough as a pro to appear in a main event at Madison Square Garden where he lost a narrow decision to the notorious Puerto Rican hothead Frankie Narvaez, a future world title challenger.

Santos’ cousin was a big draw in San Jose in an era when the San Jose / Sacramento territory was the bailiwick of Don Chargin. “Don was a beautiful man and his wife Lorraine was even nicer,” says Santos of the husband/wife promotion team who are enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Don Chargin was inducted in 2001 and Lorraine posthumously in 2018.

Chargin promoted Fresno-based featherweight Hector Lizarraga who captured the IBF title in 1997. Lizarraga turned his career around after a 5-7-3 start when he hooked up with San Jose gym operator Miguel Jara. It was one of the most successful reclamation projects in boxing history and Bob Santos played a part in it.

Bob hopes to accomplish the same turnaround with Jeison Rosario whose career was on the skids when Santos got involved. In his most recent start, Rosario held heavily favored Jarrett Hurd to a draw in a battle between former IBF 154-pound champions on a ProBox card in Florida.

“I consider that one of my greatest achievements,” says Santos, noting that Rosario was stopped four times and effectively out of action for two years before resuming his career and is now on the cusp of earning another title shot.

The boxer with whom Santos is most closely identified is former four-division world title-holder Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. The slick southpaw, the pride of Gilroy, California, the self-proclaimed “Garlic Capital of the World,” retired following a bad loss to Omar Figueroa Jr, but had second thoughts and is currently riding a six-fight winning streak. “I’ve known him since he was 15 years old,” notes Santos.

Years from now, Santos may be more closely identified with the Pero brothers, Dainier and Lenier, who aspire to be the Cuban-American version of the Klitschko brothers.

Santos describes Dainier, one of the youngest members of Cuba’s Olympic Team in Tokyo, as a bigger version of Oleksandr Usyk. That may be stretching it, but Dainier (10-0, 8 KOs as a pro), certainly hits harder.

    Dainier Pero

    Dainier Pero

This reporter was a fly on the wall as Santos put Dainier Pero through his paces on Tuesday (Jan. 14) at Bones Adams gym in Las Vegas. Santos held tight to a punch shield, in the boxing vernacular a donut, as the Cuban practiced his punches. On several occasions the trainer was knocked off-balance and the expression on his face as his body absorbed some of the after-shocks, plainly said, “My goodness, what the hell am I doing here? There has to be an easier way to make a living.” It was an assignment that Santos would have undoubtedly preferred handing off to his young assistant, his son Joe Santos, but Joe was preoccupied coordinating David Morrell’s camp.

Dainer’s brother Lenier is also an ex-Olympian, and like Dainier was a super heavyweight by trade as an amateur. With an 11-0 (8 KOs) record, Lenier Pero’s pro career was on a parallel path until stalled by a managerial dispute. Lenier last fought in March of last year and Santos says he will soon join his brother in Las Vegas.

There’s little to choose between the Pero brothers, but Dainier is considered to have the bigger upside because at age 25 he is the younger sibling by seven years.

Bob Santos was in the running again this year for The Ring magazine’s Trainer of the Year, one of six nominees for the honor that was bestowed upon his good friend Robert Garcia. Considering the way that Santos’ career is going, it’s a safe bet that he will be showered with many more accolades in the years to come.

Ohio State dominates Oregon to win Rose Bowl, advances in College Football Playoff

PASADENA, Calif. — With a 1-4 record against rival Michigan and no Big Ten title since 2020, Ohio State coach Ryan Day has faced plenty of pressure this season from his own fan base. It’s safe to say he has quieted those critics so far in the College Football Playoff.

Two weeks after they beat Tennessee 42-17 in the opening round, the Buckeyes dominated top-ranked Oregon 41-21 in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday. Ohio State will face Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 10 for a spot in the national championship.

“In this game there are ups and downs along the way,” Day said after the game. “When things are going good, you’ve got to hug the guys you love the most, and when things aren’t, you’ve got to hug them even harder. You just hang in there and keep swinging.”

The Buckeyes cruised against the Ducks from the game’s opening drive, finding the end zone in just three plays. After Ohio State quarterback Will Howard hit Gee Scott Jr. with a 30-yard pass, he connected with star receiver Jeremiah Smith for a 45-yard score.

The Buckeyes didn’t look back from there. They would go on to score the next 27 points — touchdown receptions for Smith and Emeka Egbuka and a 66-yard run up the right sideline by TreVeyon Henderson — for a commanding 34-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Oregon fans, used to watching one of the higher-scoring offenses in college football, were stunned.

The Ducks finally got on the board on the final play of the first half, a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dillon Gabriel to Traeshon Holden. Oregon got the 2-point conversion and scored on the opening drive of the second half to cut the lead to 19 points, but it ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Gabriel threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns but struggled early, particularly on third down. Oregon had 19 third-down opportunities and converted on just eight.

“You plan to create explosives, be really good on situational football and move the chains that way,” Gabriel said. “We just didn’t do that on third down. They had a great plan, but if you don’t go get the third down, you can’t move forward.”

Howard finished with 319 passing yards and three touchdowns for the Buckeyes. Smith, only a freshman yet considered arguably the top receiver in the country, had seven receptions for 187 yards and two scores. He was named the Offensive MVP.

Day was asked after the game about Smith’s impact in his first year.

“He’s earned the respect of his teammates not because of his ability. You guys see the ability, but to me it’s the work ethic every day,” Day said. “He comes in, he’s serious, he doesn’t say a whole lot. But when he does, people listen. His maturity — physically, emotionally and mentally — has allowed him to play like this.”

While Ohio State easily won its matchup Wednesday, its next opponent, Texas, had anything but a cakewalk against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. The Sun Devils trailed 24-8 at the start of the fourth quarter but scored 16 straight points to push the game to overtime.

After scoring drives for both teams in the extra period, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers sent his team to the Cotton Bowl with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Helm.

The Sugar Bowl, initially scheduled for late Wednesday between Notre Dame and Georgia, was postponed to Thursday after a man plowed a pickup through New Year’s Day revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The FBI is investigating the incident, which killed 15 people and injured more than 30, as an act of terrorism.

In a thrilling matchup at the Rose Bowl, the Ohio State Buckeyes came out on top, defeating the Oregon Ducks and advancing in the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes put on a dominating performance, showcasing their talent on both offense and defense.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud led the way for Ohio State, throwing for over 300 yards and multiple touchdowns. The Buckeyes’ defense was also impressive, holding the high-powered Oregon offense in check and forcing key turnovers.

With this win, Ohio State has punched their ticket to the next round of the College Football Playoff, where they will face off against another tough opponent. Buckeye fans are buzzing with excitement as their team continues their quest for a national championship.

Congratulations to Ohio State on their impressive victory at the Rose Bowl. Go Buckeyes! #BuckeyeNation #RoseBowlChamps #CFPbound

Croatia’s firebrand president dominates election, poised for second term – POLITICO

Critics claim that his public feuds with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković (who is also from HDZ), his cozying up to war criminals, and his promises to cut support for NATO and Ukraine have caused significant damage to the international reputation of the largely uncontroversial Balkan country.

The situation at home could not be more different. Videos of Milanović’s unfiltered press conferences and interviews often go viral on social media, and feature comments to the effect that politics is “a mere sensation” or that “I might qualify for the psychiatric ward, but only as head of the clinic.”

Analysts, however, believe the core of his appeal is his fierce rejection of the conservative HDZ, the country’s strongest party, which has dominated the political scene since Croatia gained independence following the breakup of socialist Yugoslavia in 1991.

“HDZ has governed Croatia since independence with two short interruptions only, leading state and national institutions for a very long time,” Bieber said.

“A lot of people are frustrated with the entrenchment and corruption of the party, and the sense that there is no political alternative.”

Meanwhile, Plenković, Milanović’s main opponent, is seen as a bookish Eurocrat whose decisions are pragmatic and predictable, and who consistently aligns himself with Brussels on domestic and foreign policy.

Croatia’s firebrand president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the country’s presidential election, positioning herself for a second term in office.

Grabar-Kitarović, who has been known for her outspoken and bold leadership style, has captured the attention of voters with her strong stance on national security and foreign policy. She has been a vocal advocate for Croatia’s membership in the European Union and NATO, and has worked tirelessly to strengthen ties with neighboring countries in the volatile Balkan region.

Despite facing some criticism for her confrontational approach to politics, Grabar-Kitarović’s popularity has only grown in recent months, with many voters praising her as a strong and decisive leader who is not afraid to stand up for Croatia’s interests on the international stage.

As the election results continue to roll in, it is becoming increasingly clear that Grabar-Kitarović is on track to secure a second term in office. With her bold and uncompromising leadership style, she has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with in Croatian politics, and it seems that voters are eager to see her continue to lead the country into the future.
