    When Donald J. Trump became the 45th president of the United States in 2017, he was the oldest, at 70 years old, to be sworn into office. But then, Joseph R. Biden Jr. upended that record when he took the oath at 78, in 2021.

    Mr. Trump reclaimed the title on Monday when he became the 47th president. He is also 78, but five months and six days older than Mr. Biden was on his inauguration.

    During the election, age became a key issue for Mr. Biden, who is 82. Last summer, he faced calls to withdraw from the race because of his age following a faltering debate performance.

    After Mr. Biden dropped out, Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee. Age resurfaced as an election issue as Mr. Trump competed against Ms. Harris, almost 20 years his junior at the age of 60.

    Here is a look at some of the oldest and youngest presidents to take office.

    Before Mr. Trump in 2017, Ronald Reagan was the oldest president. He was 69 in 1981 when he first took office. Mr. Reagan was 77 after his second term, the oldest president to leave office.

    More than a century before him, William Henry Harrison held the distinction of being the oldest president; his inauguration was in 1841, at 68. Mr. Harrison, who had caught a cold that developed into pneumonia, died on his 32nd day in office.

    He became the first president to die in office and served the shortest tenure to date in U.S. presidential history.

    Many people may think that John F. Kennedy, whose inauguration took place in 1961, when he was 43, was the youngest president. But that distinction belongs to Theodore Roosevelt, who was 42 in September 1901, when he assumed the presidency after the assassination of William McKinley.

    Other youthful presidents include Ulysses S. Grant, who was 46 when he took office in 1869; Bill Clinton, who was also 46 at his first inauguration, in 1993; and Barack Obama, who was 47 at his first inauguration in 2009.

    Ms. Harris was 56 years old when she became the first female vice president in 2021.

    Mr. Vance is the third youngest vice president to be elected.

    Jimmy Carter, who became the 39th president of the United States in 1977, was the longest living former president in American history. He died in December at 100 years old.

    Mr. Carter, a Democrat born on Oct. 1, 1924, sought to unite the country after the Watergate scandal but he served only one term in office. A poor economy and an international hostage crisis curtailed his chances for re-election in 1980.



    On January 20, 2021, Donald J. Trump made history once again as the oldest president to take the oath of office. At 74 years old, Trump surpassed the previous record held by Joe Biden, who was 78 when he was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States.

    Despite his age, Trump has shown no signs of slowing down and continues to be a prominent figure in American politics. With his second term in office, Trump has vowed to continue his fight for conservative values and to Make America Great Again.

    Donald Trump on Thursday, in his first interview since taking the oath as US President for the second time, issued a warning to Joe Biden, saying his predecessor had not given himself a pre-emptive pardon that would guard him against any actions taken by the current administration.

    “This guy went around giving everybody pardons, and you know, the funny thing, maybe the sad thing, is he didn’t give himself a pardon. If you look at it, it all had to do with him,” Trump told Fox News.

    During his last days in office, Biden had issued pre-emptive pardons for his siblings and their spouses saying that they had been “subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me — the worst kind of partisan politics,” and indicated that he thought such attacks would continue.

    He also pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley, members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the Capitol as well as other allies who might suffer from “political revenge” exacted by Republican President Donald Trump.

    “The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” he said in a statement.

    Biden had also pardoned his son Hunter in connection with a federal case for tax and gun crimes.

    In response to Biden granting pre-emptive pardons to his allies, Trump had earlier expressed that the former President had set an “unbelievable precedent” and that he was free to follow that precedent as well now.

    During his campaign, Donald Trump had suggested on multiple occasions that he would mobilise the US Justice Department to prosecute his political foes.

  • ICE arrests 300+ migrants day after Donald Trump inauguration


    Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested 308 migrants illegally living in the country Tuesday following President Trump’s first full day in office.

    “Today, ICE made 308 arrests of illegal aliens in our nation’s interior—even with the frigid temperatures,” Britt wrote in a post on the social platform X.

    “These arrests were nationwide in every area of interest and included several murderers, rapists, sex offenders and kidnappers,” she added.

    After returning to the White House on Monday, Trump signed a flurry of executive orders that would restrict immigration and tighten security at the border.

    Britt lauded the detainments as a sign of Trump’s dedication to carrying out the largest deportation in the country’s history, which he regularly promised on the campaign trail.

    The lawmaker also said ICE officials ordered immigrants in the country illegally and serving time in jail to be released into ICE’s custody.

    “ICE also went to jails and ordered almost 300 additional aliens to be released to ICE custody rather than our nation’s streets,” she wrote in the post. “Common sense is back.”

    Advocacy organizations and some Democrats are outraged over the Republican-led effort and fought back on Trump’s Day 1 immigration orders, including his demand to end birthright citizenship for the children of immigrants lacking legal status.

    The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the commander in chief, citing clashes with the Constitution. Twenty-two attorneys general in Democratic states also sued Trump over the order.

    REVERSING THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S REMOVAL OF THE HOUTHIS FROM THE FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION LIST: Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order Re-Designating Ansar Allah (also known as the Houthis) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

    • The Executive Order sets in motion a process by which Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, will be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
      • President Trump designated the Iranian-backed Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) in January 2021.
      • Within one month of taking office, the Biden administration reversed the Houthis’ designation.
      • As a result of the Biden administration’s weak policy, the Houthis have fired at U.S. Navy warships dozens of times, launched numerous attacks on civilian infrastructure in partner nations, and attacked commercial vessels transiting Bab al-Mandeb more than 100 times.
      • The Executive Order directs the Secretary of State, in consultation with others, to recommend the re-designation of the Houthis within 30 days.
    • Under President Trump, it is now the policy of the United States to cooperate with its regional partners to eliminate the Houthis’ capabilities and operations, deprive them of resources, and thereby end their attacks on U.S. personnel and civilians, U.S. partners, and maritime shipping in the Red Sea.
