  • Can the Kings get the ‘Donovan Mitchell package’ in a De’Aaron Fox deal?

It was reported this week that the Kings are open to trading De’Aaron Fox, and the Spurs are the team at the top of his list. Both franchises could be under pressure to get a deal done, but how? Kevin O’Connor and Tom Haberstroh discuss what a trade package should look like in this excerpt from “The Kevin O’Connor Show” which has been edited for length and clarity.

Kevin: OK, we gotta talk about De’Aaron Fox.

What type of package should the Kings be looking for here? Picks, players? What path should they be going?

Tom: The Donovan Mitchell package. That’s the asking price. Ton of picks. They got Lauri Markkanen. They got Collin Sexton — he was a young, 24-year-old at the time of the deal. And they got the 2022 first-round pick, Ochai Agbaji, who was just drafted. So they got three firsts unprotected, two pick swaps, and Agbaji that was effectively another first-round pick.

    Kevin: That’s a lot, Tom.

Tom: Three young players, three firsts and two pick swaps. Now that’s the asking price. That’s the benchmark for De’Aaron Fox. If you’re Sacramento, you say, look, a great young player, an All-Star who is the clutch player of the year. He’s under contract for next season. What is my incentive to move him right now? You’re going to have to come in with multiple first-round picks — at least three first-round picks — and a young player to build around.

If you’re the San Antonio Spurs and you have the opportunity to go get De’Aaron Fox, you obviously want to pair Victor Wembanyama with another star for this very reason we talked about last week. For the next three years, Victor Wembanyama is going to be paid $14 million on average — this season, the season after that, and the season after that. If you acquire Fox, you’re getting an All-Star-caliber player who plays downhill in the way that you’re so desperately needing — he’s one of the top drivers in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs are a bottom-five driving team. This seems like a seamless fit.

Sacramento gets on the phone and says, “Alright, Stephon Castle coming our way and a couple of first-round picks. And you’re the Spurs and you’re like …

Kevin: No, no, I’m not giving you Castle. No.

Tom: What’s it going to take?

Kevin: I’m not giving Castle. Castle’s a nonstarter for me. I’m not giving him. I will not give him up in a Fox deal.

Tom: But if you’re Sacramento, that’s the price it’s going to take. You look at benchmark deals of All-Star players in their prime, and granted De’Aaron Fox has only been to one All-Star Game. Donovan Mitchell was a three-time All-Star, and was two years younger than what Fox is right now. He’s also under contract.

Kevin: More playoff success and experience on Mitchell’s side too. And a better player.

Tom: Yep, I think objectively a better player at the time of the deal than what Fox is now.

So if you lower that asking price, you’re like, all right, not three firsts and two swaps and three young players. But if the deal is Zach Collins and Keldon Johnson and five first-round picks, I don’t think Sacramento says no to that. It’s going to have to be that caliber of package, because the Spurs aren’t going to put Castle in a deal. Do they put Devin Vassell into a deal? I think you want Vassell around Wemby and Fox.

What does the trade package look like, KOC?

Kevin: I put out an idea on X earlier in the week. It was a three-way including Utah, coincidentally, sending John Collins and Collin Sexton to the Kings. Some of those San Antonio salaries you’re alluding to would then instead go to Utah, with picks going to the Kings, picks going to the Jazz, Fox going to the Spurs. I think the Kings would probably get more than I put in that deal.

But if I’m the Kings, I’d rather the heavy picks-based package, even if it means not getting the player incentives like you’re talking about with Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton going to the Jazz in that Mitchell deal.

Ultimately, the Kings are obviously under some pressure here. They have a player who hasn’t explicitly demanded a trade, but clearly they don’t feel confident he wants to be there long term. But they also have time, like you alluded to. He has another year on his deal. They could play this out. The team’s been playing really well lately. Maybe they go into the playoffs and they win a round, and Fox loves it there and he wants to re-sign and everything’s happy and good this summer. That’s the scenario the Spurs need to be afraid of here. Because it’s San Antonio. It’s not a big market. It’s not a place that stars really ever want to go. And they have an opportunity to go get a top player who wants to be there.

And this is the window. Like when will there be an opportunity again to get a star who wants to be on your team and a star that becomes available? I just look around the market. Who’s the next guy? Like you can dream about Anthony Edwards. You can dream about some of these guys for years from now, but there’s no guarantee that that guy is ever going to become available. And if he does become available it might not be in a situation where it makes sense for you to put the best offer on the table.

So the Spurs are definitely under pressure to make Victor Wembanyama happy, to try to maximize what this team can be when he’s on that rookie deal, and Fox might be the best shot that they can take. So they’re under pressure here as well to get something done.

The Sacramento Kings have a decision to make with their star point guard De’Aaron Fox. With his contract extension looming, there is speculation about whether the Kings should explore trading him in order to rebuild their roster.

One potential trade scenario that has been discussed is the possibility of the Kings receiving a package similar to what the Utah Jazz got for Donovan Mitchell in a potential De’Aaron Fox deal. Mitchell was traded to the Jazz on draft night in 2017 in exchange for the rights to guard Donovan Mitchell, forward Tyler Lydon, and forward Trey Lyles.

The Kings would likely be looking for a similar return in a potential Fox trade, which could include a promising young player, draft picks, and possibly a veteran to help balance out the roster. However, it remains to be seen if any team would be willing to offer up a package of that caliber for Fox.

Ultimately, the decision will come down to whether the Kings believe they can build a competitive team around Fox or if they need to start fresh with a rebuild. Only time will tell what the future holds for De’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings.

  • Player Grades: Cavs at Heat – Donovan Mitchell leads the way

The Cleveland Cavaliers couldn’t have responded much better to their three-game skid. While their competition wasn’t elite, dominant wins over the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat are exactly what the doctor ordered for Cleveland.

Grades are based on our usual expectations for each player.

    Donovan Mitchell

    34 points (14-23 shooting), 6 assists, 1 rebound, 2 steals

With no Darius Garland tonight — the Cavs needed a throwback performance from Mitchell. He hasn’t been required to control every aspect of the offense since last season. But tonight, Mitchell reminded us why he is such a special talent.

Mitchell was firmly ahead of Miami’s defense all night. He carved them to perfection, pouring on five three-pointers even when the rest of his teammates combined for just seven of their own.

Overall, it’s good the Cavaliers aren’t relying on Mitchell’s one-man army approach this season. Still, it’s fun to watch when it happens.

    Grade: A+

    Evan Mobley

    22 points (10-15 shooting), 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block

Mobley knew the Cavaliers would need some scoring from him tonight. In years past, this would have been a tall order. This season? It’s enough said. Mobley was aggressive from the jump and had no issue carrying his share of the offensive load.

The strength and confidence Mobley has gained can’t be overlooked. He worked around Bam Adebayo numerous times to score in the paint. This is something he just wasn’t capable of in previous seasons.

The NBA All-Star reserves are set to be announced tomorrow. With how dominant Mobley has been on both ends of the floor this season, it’s hard to imagine he’s left out.

    Grade: A+

    Jarrett Allen

    12 points (5-7 shooting), 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals

Allen didn’t set anything ablaze in his 29 minutes but he did all of the things you expect him to do in a Cavs victory. He put a deadbolt on the paint, ran the floor for easy opportunities — and cleaned the offensive glass for a handful of putbacks in the second half. Allen remains the sturdy two-way presence this team benefits from in most of their wins.

    Grade: A-

    Max Strus

    8 points (3-11 shooting), 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals

Eventually, the Cavs will need Strus to actually hit his shots. But right now? They are riding the wave of this phenomenal two-way play he’s had this week.

Strus was instrumental in defending Cade Cunningham on Tuesday and tonight he accepted the challenge against another potential All-Star guard in Tyler Herro. His perimeter defense has kept the Cavaliers competitive without Dean Wade, Caris LeVert or Isaac Okoro.

    Grade: B

    Georges Niang

    15 points (6-9 shooting), 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal

Niang shot 1-9 in his previous game, receiving an F grade. This time, he played significantly better on both ends of the floor. His timely three-pointers contributed to the Cavaliers onslaught that helped them pull away during the fourth quarter. And, he even picked up a few hard-fought rebounds.

    Grade: A-

    Ty Jerome

    20 points (9-18 shooting), 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal

Jerome has surprised everyone this season. Even after he seemingly crashed down to Earth in December, he has once again sparked the magic that made him one of the most lethal bench players in the NBA this season.

The Cavs bought low on Jerome and have reaped massive rewards. His 20 points and 7 assists off the bench allowed them to coast in a game they were missing Garland. This is the best possible outcome you could have imagined when adding Jerome to the team in 2023.

    Grade: A+

    Jaylon Tyson

    4 points (2-7 shooting), 5 rebounds, 4 assists

The rook got the start tonight. And while he hasn’t found his scoring touch yet — he’s made an impact in every other facet of the game.

Tyson works hard on defense. He’s a physical presence who matches up with multiple positions. The fact that he’s bought into exerting himself defensively while hardly touching the ball on offense is a great sign for his long-term development.

We’d like to see him space the floor a bit better (0-3 from deep). But Tyson is able to break even by being a smart off-ball cutter and a constant threat to grab rebounds. He clawed in three offensive rebounds in 30 minutes tonight.

    Grade: B

    Craig Porter

    9 points (4-7 shooting), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block

Porter still faces the same challenges he discovered in the back half of his rookie season. In short, it’s tough being a point guard who can’t shoot from the perimeter in today’s NBA.

Still, Porter was a positive against Miami because of his ability to break free in transition. His best moments came on the break while his presence on the glass makes up for the occasional defensive lapse. At least, it did tonight.

    Grade: B-

Player Grades: Cavs at Heat – Donovan Mitchell leads the way

The Cleveland Cavaliers faced off against the Miami Heat in a thrilling matchup that saw Donovan Mitchell shine brightest on the court. The young guard put on a show, leading his team to a hard-fought victory over the Heat.

Here are the player grades from this exciting game:

    Donovan Mitchell: A+
Mitchell was simply sensational in this game, scoring 35 points and dishing out 7 assists. He was a scoring machine, hitting clutch shots when his team needed him the most. Mitchell’s performance was the driving force behind the Cavaliers’ victory.

    Bam Adebayo: B
Adebayo had a solid game for the Heat, recording a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He was a force in the paint and provided some much-needed scoring for Miami. However, he struggled defensively against Mitchell, which ultimately hurt his team’s chances of winning.

    Collin Sexton: B-
Sexton had a decent game for the Cavaliers, scoring 20 points and adding 4 assists. He was aggressive on the offensive end but struggled with his shot at times. Sexton’s play was solid overall, but he will need to be more consistent moving forward.

    Jimmy Butler: C+
Butler had a quiet game for the Heat, scoring 16 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. He was not as aggressive as usual and struggled to find his rhythm offensively. Butler will need to step up his game if the Heat want to compete at a high level.

Overall, it was an exciting game between the Cavaliers and the Heat, with Donovan Mitchell stealing the show with his stellar performance. The Cavaliers will look to build off this win, while the Heat will need to regroup and come back stronger in their next game.

  • Start Donovan Clingan in DFS with Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams out

Without Ayton (knee) and Williams (hand), rookie Donovan Clingan is lined up as a good value play to consider on Friday against the Hornets.

On Friday night’s three-game DraftKings slate, the Trail Blazers are the only team playing for the second night in a row. On Thursday, Portland beat the Magic despite Deandre Ayton (knee) being ruled out due to knee soreness. Robert Williams III (hand) started in his place, but both big men were ruled out for this evening on Portland’s injury report. In better news on that injury report, rookie Donovan Clingan ($4,000; ankle) was listed as probable. Clingan has missed the last five games with a left ankle sprain, but he should be in store for plenty of work on Friday in his return and be an excellent bargain value play for DFS contests.

Set your DraftKings fantasy basketball lineups here: NBA $333K Fadeaway [$100K to 1st]!

C Donovan Clingan at Charlotte Hornets, $4,000

Clingan was the No. 7 overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft out of UCONN and has played 31 games for the Blazers this season. He has averaged 16.6 minutes per game while contributing 5.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for 18.4 fantasy points per game.

This season, Clingan has started eight games, averaging 8.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocks in 22.9 minutes. He had double-digit rebounds in three straight games before missing the last five games and posted over 27 fantasy points in each of those three games.

Without Williams and Ayton, Clingan will get as many minutes as he can handle, and he was playing over 20 minutes per game before the injury. Even though he doesn’t usually score a ton of points, his non-scoring contributions should be enough to make him a great value play at only $4K.

Aside from Clingan, Jabari Walker ($3,300) and Duop Reath ($3,000) could also see increased playing time, with Walker offering the better fantasy upside of those two alternatives.

With Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams ruled out for tonight’s game, Donovan Clingan is set to see an increase in playing time and production. Clingan has shown flashes of potential in limited minutes this season, and with the opportunity to start, he could be a great value play in daily fantasy sports (DFS) tonight.

Clingan has the size and skill to be a force in the paint, and he should be able to take advantage of the extra minutes against a weakened frontcourt. With his low salary and high upside, Clingan is a strong play in DFS tonight.

Make sure to roster Donovan Clingan in your DFS lineups tonight and take advantage of his increased opportunity with Ayton and Williams out. He could be the key to winning big in tonight’s slate of games.

  • Former UConn Star Center Donovan Clingan Returns From Ankle Injury In Style

On Jan. 14, former UConn Huskies star center Donovan Clingan experienced an unfortunate setback for the second time this season.

In addition to suffering a grade 2 MCL sprain in November, Clingan injured his left ankle against the Brooklyn Nets in mid-January while attempting to protect the rim late in the contest.

While many feared Clingan would miss significant time with the Portland Trail Blazers, the dynamic 7-foot-2 big man was only forced to sit out five contests before returning to the lineup on Friday.

From dominating the defensive glass to flaunting his remarkable shot-blocking ability, Clingan played high-level basketball with the Trail Blazers during their 102-97 road victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

The two-time NCAA champion finished with 13 rebounds, four blocks, four assists, and four points in 18 productive minutes.

According to an NBA-centered social media account, Clingan’s impact on the hardwood is much more substantial than many know.

“Donovan Clingan has a block% of 8.6%,” Point Made Basketball said on X/Twitter Friday.

“How good is that? To put it into context, here are the block% of some well-known rim protectors this year (Victor Wembanyama- 10.8%, Anthony Davis- 5.9%, Myles Turner- 5.8%, Jaren Jackson Jr.-5.1%, and Rudy Gobert- 4.2%).”

If Clingan remains healthy and motivated to improve, the national media will have no choice but to acknowledge him in Portland.

More NCAA: UConn’s Alex Karaban And Dan Hurley Have Unbreakable Bond: ‘It Is Special’

Former UConn star center Donovan Clingan returned from his ankle injury in style last night, showcasing his dominance on the court once again. After missing several games due to the injury, Clingan made a triumphant return, leading his team to a resounding victory.

Clingan’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he displayed his impressive scoring ability, rebounding prowess, and shot-blocking skills. The crowd erupted in cheers as they witnessed the star player make his comeback with such finesse and confidence.

With his return, Clingan has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with in the basketball world. His determination and resilience in overcoming his injury serve as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes.

Fans and teammates alike are thrilled to have Clingan back on the court, and they can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next. As he continues to recover and regain his full strength, there is no doubt that Clingan will continue to make a significant impact in the game of basketball.

  • Donovan Clingan returns, helps fuel Trail Blazers’ win at Hornets

Portland Trail Blazers center Donovan Clingan returned from missing five games with a sprained left ankle at the perfect time.

The Blazers closed out a three-game trip Friday night at the Charlotte Hornets without the services of starting center Deandre Ayton (knee) and backup Robert Williams III (hand).

Clingan, making just his third start since Nov. 23, delivered four points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots to help lead the Blazers to a 102-97 win.

“I was feeling good,” Clingan told reporters at the Spectrum Center. “Obviously, I had to get my wind under me a little bit. I was a little tired at first.”

Clingan did all of his statistical damage in just over 17 minutes while on a minutes restriction.

“His minutes were great,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups told reporters. “I just wish we had more. I thought he dominated his minutes in terms of on the glass, blocking shots. He was a presence down there.”

Clingan has had a productive rookie season, but injuries to his knee and ankle have caused him to miss 13 games. His scoring has been spotty (5.6 points per game), but per 36 minutes he averages 14 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots per game.

Portland Trail Blazers v Charlotte Hornets

Clingan pretty much matched his average for blocks with three swats in the first quarter.

“That’s his gift and I thought he set the tone for us tonight,” Billups said.

Clingan’s presence, Billups said, allowed the team to play aggressive defense on the perimeter, which contributed to the Hornets shooting just 37.6% from the field. That’s tied for the third-lowest percentage the Blazers have allowed this season.

“He gives us so much confidence to know that we can pressure people,” Billups said. “When we know he’s back there, he’s gonna try to clean up all the mistakes that we make with us trying to be so aggressive.”

Blazers guard Anferne Simons, who led the team with 27 points, said Clingan’s defensive presence was felt.

“Donovan played great,” Simons told reporters. “Altering shots at the rim. Just being a presence down low. That’s all we need him to be. Play hard. Get some offensive rebounds. Ge some putbacks. Just doing the dirty work.”

For Clingan, impacting the Blazers’ defense during the win makes for a great evening.

“That’s what I love,” he said. “I love defense. I love guarding. I just want to have a presence in the paint. I want to alter shots. I want to block shots. I want to make people not take shots.”

The Blazers, 3-0 on this trip, return home to host seven games starting at 3 p.m. Sunday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Donovan Clingan, the highly-touted center prospect, made his much-anticipated return to the lineup for the Portland Trail Blazers and made an immediate impact in their victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Clingan, who had been sidelined with a knee injury, showed no signs of rust as he dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. His presence on the defensive end was especially felt, as he swatted away shots and altered numerous attempts at the rim.

Offensively, Clingan showcased his scoring ability with an array of post moves and put-backs, finishing with a double-double and helping to fuel the Trail Blazers’ offense.

His return couldn’t have come at a better time for the Trail Blazers, who were in need of a boost after a string of tough losses. With Clingan back in the lineup, the team looked rejuvenated and played with a renewed sense of energy and purpose.

The victory over the Hornets was a statement win for the Trail Blazers, who now look to build on their momentum and make a push up the standings. With Clingan back in the fold, the team’s potential seems limitless, and fans are excited to see what he can bring to the table in the games to come.

  • Fact or Fiction: This is Donovan Mitchell’s moment

Each week during the 2024-25 NBA season, we will take a deeper dive into some of the league’s biggest storylines in an attempt to determine whether trends are based more in fact or fiction moving forward.

[Last time on Fact or Fiction: There should be a trade market for Zion Williamson]

If given the time you could probably name the nine-man list of 10-time NBA All-Stars who have never won a championship: James Harden, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone and Elgin Baylor. Even the handful of nine-time All-Stars who haven’t won a title are familiar: Paul George, Russell Westbrook, Dominique Wilkins, George Gervin and Lenny Wilkens.

Members of this fraternity are guaranteed of the Hall of Fame, but it is a club to which no one seeks membership, for it means they failed to reach the pinnacle of their profession. It is what separates Malone from Dirk Nowitzki, Paul from Isiah Thomas, Anthony from Paul Pierce. Bragging rights are forever.

We can debate who in the NBA right now will become a 10-time All-Star, though this seems like a pretty good standard: Of the 42 retired players who earned six All-Star bids by age 28, 25 of them finished their careers with double-digit appearances. The vast majority of the others had careers cut short by injuries.

The newest entrants into the list of 28-year-old, six-time All-Stars will be Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell, a pair of surefire selections whose teams are vying for Eastern Conference supremacy. Tatum won his ring last season. He is certified. And Mitchell has his best chance of winning a title this season.

How good of a shot do Mitchell’s Cavaliers have to win it all? Of the eight previous teams to start a season 34-5, as Cleveland has, six won the title. The two other teams had previously banked a title.

Cleveland’s net rating is among the best ever and second this season only to the Oklahoma City Thunder — whom the Cavs face Thursday night — another team on a historic pace. No team that has started so hot as the Cavaliers — with a net rating as high as theirs — has failed to reach the NBA Finals. It cannot be understated how good they have been.

Do we think the Cavaliers will improve on this in subsequent seasons? Or is this their moment?

While we view Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his Thunder as a superstar and a team on the rise, we do not think of Cleveland in the same vein. Mitchell is an established star. He is who he is — great, though not someone who we consider to be the traditional anchor of a historic team. Previous players to lead their teams to 34-5 starts included all-timers Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving and Steph Curry.

Of course, we said the same of Tatum last season, and he delivered.

One other player led his team to a 34-5 start: Chauncey Billups. Mitchell already has as many All-Star selections as Billups logged in his entire career, but their situations are not so different. Granted, defense was Detroit’s calling card, and offense is Cleveland’s trademark, but they are both smaller-market teams with ensemble casts, led by a guard who has peaked as a fringe MVP candidate. Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen vs. Billups, Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace is a war.

Point is: It can be done. Donovan Mitchell absolutely can win the championship.

And how many times are we going to say that in his career?

Mitchell is not a serious MVP candidate, at least not in the eyes of sportsbooks and voters. He is sacrificing for the greater good of the team, and his production — his lowest-scoring output since his rookie season — reflects that. Gone are the days when the best player on the best team is automatically an MVP candidate of consequence. Tatum, for example, finished sixth in the MVP voting last season.

Of the 21 teams in history that have won 65 games in a season, 15 won the title, and yet only the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s and the Golden State Warriors of the 2010s won 65 games on multiple occasions. That these Cavaliers are not. Tatum’s Celtics — Cleveland’s biggest threat in the East — are learning this now.

Windows close quickly in the NBA, especially for players outside the pantheon — players like Mitchell. Mobley’s next contract pushes Cleveland closer to the luxury tax next season, and who knows how chemistry carries from one season to the next? We were not even sure Mitchell wanted to stay in Cleveland as recently as eight months ago. Things change. And fast. Mitchell’s 2021-22 Utah Jazz won at a 56-win pace, lost in the first round of the playoffs and were dissolved by the end of the next season.

You have to seize these opportunities when they come. And this is Mitchell’s moment. I think we can all agree he is more Nique than MJ, hitting a second-round playoff ceiling through his first seven seasons.

And how often do you know this is your best chance as it is happening?

When Iverson was a 25-year-old MVP for the 2000-01 Philadelphia 76ers, did he think, This will be the only time I sniff an NBA Finals? Did Barkley, as a 29-year-old MVP in his first season on the Phoenix Suns, think they would never return to the title series? How could Harden have known as a 28-year-old MVP that his 2017-18 Houston Rockets would represent his last best shot a ring? In the moment you think you are invincible. In the moment you never see the end coming. But it comes for us all, faster in the NBA.

But with Mitchell we can see it as clear as day. In all likelihood, these Cavaliers will never be so good as they are now, and Mitchell may never be as good — or as sacrificial — as he is now. The intersection is Mitchell’s moment. His moment to seize his championship — his moment to secure bragging rights over every one of the ringless Hall of Famers who will one day attend Mitchell’s induction into Springfield.

Determination: Fact. This is Donovan Mitchell’s moment.

Donovan Mitchell has been taking the NBA world by storm with his incredible performances in the playoffs, leading the Utah Jazz to the top of the standings and earning himself a spot among the league’s elite players. But is this truly his moment to shine, or is it all just hype? Let’s break it down and see if it’s fact or fiction.

Fact: Donovan Mitchell has been absolutely dominating on the court, putting up impressive numbers and leading his team to victory after victory. He has shown incredible scoring ability, quickness, and leadership skills, making him a force to be reckoned with in the league. His clutch performances in high-pressure situations have solidified his status as a true superstar in the making.

Fiction: While Donovan Mitchell has undoubtedly been playing at an incredibly high level, it’s important to remember that basketball is a team sport. The success of the Utah Jazz is not solely dependent on one player, and Mitchell’s success is also a result of the contributions of his teammates. It’s also worth noting that Mitchell is still a relatively young player, and it remains to be seen if he can sustain this level of performance over the long term.

Ultimately, whether or not this is truly Donovan Mitchell’s moment is open to interpretation. It’s clear that he is a rising star in the NBA and has the potential to achieve great things in his career. However, only time will tell if he can continue to elevate his game and lead his team to even greater heights. So, fact or fiction? The answer may lie somewhere in between.

Blazers’ Donovan Clingan Narrowly Misses Out on December Rookie of the Month Honors

Rookie Portland Trail Blazers center Donovan Clingan had an impressive month to close out the calendar year.

Across eight games for Portland last month (one start), Clingan averaged 5.1 points on efficient tallies of 52.9 percent shooting from the field and 75.0 percent shooting from the foul line, plus 4.9 rebounds, 0.5 blocks and 0.4 steals in just 13.6 minutes a night.

Per NBA Communications, Clingan, San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle, Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Eden and guard Jaylen Wells were the other nominees for the honor in the Western Conference. New Orleans Pelicans first-year center Yves Missi was ultimately named the Kia NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December. Missi averaged an 11.2-point, 10-rebound double-double.

In the East, Washington Wizards No. 2 draft pick Alex Sarr was that conference’s honoree. He notched 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks for Washington last month.

This year, Clingan is averaging 5.6 points on 52.7 percent shooting from the floor and 73.1 percent shooting from the charity stripe, 6.1 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 0.6 assists and 0.5 steals across 25 contests (seven starts), in 15.9 minutes per. On a per-36 minute basis, those averages would translate to 12.7 points, 13.8 rebounds, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals.

    This story will be updated…

In a close race for December Rookie of the Month honors, Portland Trail Blazers’ rookie center Donovan Clingan narrowly missed out on the award. Despite putting up impressive numbers in his first month in the NBA, Clingan fell just short of securing the honor.

Clingan, who was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has been a standout performer for the Blazers this season. In December, he averaged a double-double with 12.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, while also contributing 1.8 blocks per game on the defensive end.

Despite his strong performance, Clingan was edged out for the Rookie of the Month award by a fellow rookie who had a slightly better statistical month. However, Clingan’s impact on the court for the Blazers has not gone unnoticed, and he is sure to be a contender for future Rookie of the Month honors.

Blazers fans can look forward to seeing more impressive performances from Clingan as he continues to develop and make his mark in the NBA. Congratulations to Donovan Clingan on a fantastic month, and here’s to many more standout performances in the future.
