  • Elon Musk bashes the $500 billion AI project Trump announced, claiming its backers don’t ‘have the money’

    CNN
     —

Shortly after President Donald Trump announced a new massive AI infrastructure investment from the White House, “First Buddy” Elon Musk tried to tear it down.

“They don’t actually have the money,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”

Trump said the investment will create a new company, called Stargate, to grow artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States. The leaders of SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle stood alongside Trump during the announcement. Their respective companies will invest $100 billion in total for the project to start, with plans to pour up to $500 billion into Stargate in the coming years.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, accompanied by President Donald Trump, Oracle CTO Larry Ellison (R), and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son (2nd-R), at the announcement of an investment in AI infrastructure.

The comments are a notable takedown of a major White House project from someone that is in Trump’s innermost circle. As a sign of how involved Musk is in the first days of the administration, Musk said he was in the Oval Office on Tuesday as Trump signed a pardon for Ross William Ulbricht, founder of the dark web marketplace SilkRoad. Musk had also dispatched a top staffer from his SpaceX and X companies to help ensure the release of convicted January 6 rioters after Trump signed a blanket pardon.

But perhaps it should not be a surprise that Musk is going after an OpenAI initiative. Musk is in an ongoing lawsuit with OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, who was at the White House for the announcement. Musk, who has said he “doesn’t trust” Altman, claims in the lawsuit the ChatGPT has abandoned its original nonprofit mission by reserving some of its most advanced AI technology for private customers.

The companies involved in Stargate have not publicly disclosed how they will contribute the funds, but they don’t necessarily need the money in the bank to support it — they could raise debt or sign on other equity investors.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday rebuffed Musk’s comments, saying in a Fox News interview, “the American people should take President Trump and those CEOs’ words for it.”

“President Trump is very excited about this infrastructure announcement in the field of AI, which is obviously growing, and something the United States of America needs to capitalize on, because our adversaries, such as China, are very advanced in this field,” Leavitt said. “So, the American people should take President Trump and those CEOs’ words for it -– these investments are coming to our great country, and American jobs are coming along with them.”

Altman replied directly to Musk’s claim on X, writing “wrong, as you surely know. want to come visit the first site already under way? this is great for the country. i realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role i hope you’ll mostly put (America) first.”

A source familiar with Stargate said Musk’s assertion is not true.

Softbank, the source pointed out, has $24.3 billion of cash on its balance sheet per its latest earnings and that it is comfortable taking on more debt to help fund the project, the wherewithal to access more capital.

The source pointed out that MGX has $100 billion in capital commitments, Oracle has $11 billion in cash on its balance sheet and OpenAI recently announced it has more than $10 billion from its recent round of venture capital.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, which is working with OpenAI on Stargate, said on CNBC Wednesday “all I know is I’m good for my $80 billion.”

DJ Judd contributed to this report.

Elon Musk recently criticized the $500 billion AI project announced by President Trump, stating that the backers of the project don’t “have the money” to successfully execute such a massive endeavor. Musk, who is known for his skepticism about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, expressed concerns about the feasibility and funding of the ambitious project.

In a series of tweets, Musk questioned the financial capabilities of the project’s backers, suggesting that they may not have the resources necessary to support such a large-scale initiative. He also raised doubts about the practicality of the project, warning that it could potentially lead to unforeseen consequences if not carefully managed.

Musk’s comments have sparked a debate within the tech community about the viability of President Trump’s AI project and the potential risks associated with investing in such advanced technologies. While some experts have expressed support for the project, others have echoed Musk’s concerns about the financial and logistical challenges that could arise.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether President Trump’s $500 billion AI project will move forward as planned or face additional scrutiny from critics like Elon Musk.

  • ‘Disasters don’t discriminate,’ outgoing FEMA administrator says

Whether it is a hurricane, major tornado, wildfire or anything in between, disasters “don’t discriminate” in where they will be and whom they might affect, according to the outgoing top emergency manager.

“We know that these types of severe weather events, they don’t have borders, they don’t discriminate and we [at] FEMA … have the ability to make sure that anyone impacted doesn’t have the barriers to access our programs,” outgoing Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell told ABC News.

Criswell, a member of the Air National Guard for 21 years, has also been the top emergency manager in Aurora, Colorado, and in New York City.

“All disasters start and end at the local level, and our job as federal emergency managers is to enable their ability to be successful, and I’ve been in their role,” she said.

The outgoing administrator said she “never lost sight” of putting herself in the local emergency managers’ shoes and made policy changes based on that thinking.

Criswell noted she received criticism for putting “equity” into her strategic plan to run the agency but defended it, saying the agency needed a “mindset shift” to reach everyone who may be affected by a disaster.

“Having been a customer and understanding the barriers that people experience, whether that’s an individual or a small community, and being able to remove those barriers so everybody has the ability to get what they’re eligible for, was my focus with equity, and I know that there’s naysayers out there that want to say that equity is about picking and choosing winners and losers or however they want to phrase it, but that’s not what this was about,” she said. “This was about removing barriers, helping people through their toughest day in the way that the federal government was designed to do.”

    Daniel Lyon/FEMA

Criswell said the agency is “nonpartisan” and that it should stay that way.

“The only way that we are going to be successful in helping communities recover, helping them rebuild in a way that makes them more resilient to future events, is by maintaining that level of nonpartisanship because if we don’t have it, then we’re going to also lose trust in the communities that we’re going in there to help,” she explained. “Without that trust, we’re not going to be able to help them with their immediate needs, and we’re not going to be not going to be able to help them with their long-term rebuilding.”

She said every disaster she responded to during her time as administrator was “different” and “unique,” including wildfires in Los Angeles, hurricane devastation in western North Carolina and crippling tornadoes in Arkansas.

“I think maybe what’s challenging is that every one I go to, it never got any easier,” she said. “It never got any easier to see people lose so much and want to be able to do whatever we could to help them on this road to recovery, knowing that we can only jump-start that process.”

    Danny Lyon/FEMA

During her time as administrator, she said she tried to meet people where they were and “could not make decisions about how to implement the response in the recovery from an office in Washington, D.C.”

Criswell said she got to know governors from across the country, both Republicans and Democrats, and saw the care they felt for their states during tragedies big and small.

“I reach out to every governor when something has happened, sometimes even small things that are happening,” she said. “When it comes to helping their communities, their people that have been impacted by natural disasters, I get to see the human side of every one of our state leaders, and they all care so deeply about the people that they were elected to serve.”

Part of the job as FEMA administrator is traveling to disaster zones, often with the president.

Just after Criswell was confirmed as administrator, a condominium complex in Surfside, Florida, collapsed. She and President Joe Biden visited the families who were affected. Criswell said loved ones and survivors were gathered in a room waiting to hear the status of their homes and family members when the president walked in.

“President Biden and the first lady came in, and he walked around and talked to every one of them, and what I saw that day — and then I saw every single disaster following that — was just the human side of how he approached these horrible events, and he didn’t walk around and just shake a hand and move on,” she said. “He sat and had meaningful conversations. He shared his own stories of personal tragedy.”

All told, Criswell said, he spent three hours meeting with and talking to victims.

“I have traveled with President Biden to more disasters than I ever expected to. And I told him — Mr. President, I never thought I’d have to see this much,” she said, adding that he’d always give a chuckle.

    Danny Lyon/FEMA

Criswell said FEMA will continue to have challenges in battling misinformation.

“We are in a new information environment, and we have to find ways to be more proactive, to build relationships with trusted leaders and communities that they can help be force multipliers [in] us getting the right message out,” she said, adding that it is something the agency has always had to deal with.

“The level … that we’re seeing divisiveness created through some of the information that’s going out there is just going to be something we have to face going forward, and we’re going to have to work on how do we get ahead of that and how do we find trusted voices in communities to help us get the real information out there,” she said.

Criswell said that in the end, it is all about helping people and getting the right information out to the right people.

In a recent interview with the outgoing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administrator, it was emphasized that disasters do not discriminate. Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, wildfires, and floods, have the potential to affect anyone, regardless of their race, socioeconomic status, or location.

The administrator discussed the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of disasters, stating that all individuals and communities should take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being. This includes having an emergency plan in place, staying informed about potential hazards, and being ready to evacuate if necessary.

As the administrator prepares to leave their position, they urged all Americans to take disaster preparedness seriously and to work together to build stronger, more resilient communities. By coming together and supporting one another in times of crisis, we can better weather the storm and recover more quickly in the aftermath of a disaster.

Remember, disasters don’t discriminate – they can affect anyone. It is up to us to be prepared and ready to respond when they strike.

  • Mayor Parker playfully addresses botched Eagles chant: ‘We don’t promise perfection’

It’s a cardinal sin among Eagles fans!

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker is catching heat for fumbling the spelling of “Eagles” after she started the popular chant at a press conference over the weekend.

The gaffe happened on Sunday, when Parker and city leaders gathered to discuss winter storm preparations in Philadelphia ahead of the Eagles-Rams playoff game.

Parker began the ill-fated chant at the end of the press conference and encouraged others to join in as she spelled out “E-L-G-S-E-S! Eagles!”

    What we know:

Parker and other city leaders gathered outside in the bitter cold and wet conditions on Sunday to discuss how the city was preparing for an incoming winter storm.

The first-term mayor called heading to the Eagles playoff game essential travel, and encouraged fans to use caution while heading to Lincoln Financial Field.

“Making it to our Philadelphia Eagles game on today is essential,” Parker said.

Before the press conference wrapped up, Parker implored those gathered around her to participate in an Eagles chant.

“We’ve gotta do this, let me hear you all say: E-L-G-L-E-S! Eagles!” Parker exclaimed. “Go Birds!”

    What they’re saying:

Parker poked fun at her blunder on Tuesday during a press conference about the Kensington Wellness Court.

“We don’t promise perfection, I’m so happy I never have,” Parker said. “Especially after I couldn’t spell Eagles right.”

The self-deprecating moment elicited a laugh from those in attendance.

    Cherelle ParkerPhiladelphia EaglesPhiladelphiaNews

In a recent press conference, Mayor Parker addressed the botched Eagles chant that took place during a recent event in the city. With a smile on her face, Mayor Parker playfully stated, “We don’t promise perfection, but we do promise passion and dedication from our fans.”

The Mayor’s lighthearted response to the mistake showed her understanding and support for the passionate fans of the Eagles. She went on to praise the team for their hard work and commitment throughout the season, despite any small mishaps along the way.

As the city continues to rally behind the Eagles, Mayor Parker’s playful attitude serves as a reminder that it’s not about being perfect, but rather about showing support and enthusiasm for our beloved team. Let’s keep cheering on the Eagles with all our hearts, flaws and all! #FlyEaglesFly

  • He ‘must know something’ that others don’t

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy clashed with NBC News hosts on Monday in a contentious interview where he pushed back against a perceived double standard applied to President Trump by Democrats and the media.

McCarthy joined NBC’s inaugural coverage shortly after former President Biden issued a series of preemptive pardons for five members of his family on his way out the door.

The former GOP lawmaker was asked how he squares Republican criticism of Biden’s last-minute pardons with Trump’s campaign pledge to issue pardons for a number of individuals charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Flashback: Biden Told Cnn He Would Not Issue Preemptive Pardons Before Leaving Office

“This is the difference. This president told the American public, while he was campaigning for office, ‘if I’m elected president, I will pardon these people,’” McCarthy fired back. “Compare this to Joe Biden, who said he would never pardon his son, who now, on the very last day in the last 30 minutes, pardons his entire family.”

“Terrible. Terrible,” he continued. “Think about what everybody else had gone through. Why pardon your family? It makes no sense to me…all it does, is, put a cloud over that you did something wrong…. you must know something that other people do not and what? Why do you wait until 30 minutes before? Why did you tell the American public you would never pardon your son and you do it now? The difference here is whether you agree or disagree about what President Trump’s going to do, he told the American public ahead of time. They put that into consideration whether they vote for him for president, so he’s just keeping a campaign promise.”

Asked about concerns that Trump would seek political retribution against political opponents in office, McCarthy said it was Democrats who need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

“See, this is the thing that bothers me most. For the people who oppose President Trump, all they talk about is retribution. I have not seen him put retribution onto anybody when he had the power…he’s talked about it, but I’ve only seen the other side do retribution to him and everybody else.

“I will tell you this – four years ago, when President Trump left office, everybody who worked for him got black-balled. No one could be hired…nobody could work any place and then everybody had to go through attorneys. Everybody was getting prosecuted, everybody was being looked at. President Trump had to go through it and what the Democrats did to President Trump. They helped elect him by prosecuting him…,” he went on.

McCarthy said Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, will “uphold the rule of law.”

    Republican California Rep. Kevin McCarthy

Representative Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023.

“I’ve watched people sit back and say I want to go after you because you say you might do something in the future. We live in America right? You’re innocent until proven guilty, but now they’re going after this, they will uphold the rule of law, but they saw the other side of this that people [were] using prosecution against them that wasn’t right. I think they’ll be more apt not to use it for that reason.”

NBC host Savannah Guthrie pushed back, arguing that prosecution against Trump for the possession of classified documents was “not an abuse” of the rule of law.

“This is all fair too okay, that that was on President Trump, but at the very same moment you’re saying that, you had a President Joe Biden, that had the documents inside his garage,” McCarthy retorted.

“This is something that was different… he had a document when he was a senator. I’ve been part of the gang of eight – at no time, at no place… a senator could ever take a classified document. Done deal, but he had one. Did he get prosecuted? No. What did they say? He’s too old, but he’s the sitting U.S. President of the United States.” McCarthy continued.

    US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump speaks during the 60th presidential inauguration in the rotunda of the US Capitol in Washington, DC, US, on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025.

“So this is what we talk about fair treatment. When people on the other side say ‘oh my God, President Trump may do something in the future,’ he hasn’t. Give us the time and… if he does something wrong, that’s an appropriate time to make an argument, but right now, I just watched a nation have an opportunity to heal. I watched world leaders come to this inaugural. I’ve watched people who spent millions of dollars against him, sit right behind him and are excited,” McCarthy concluded. “I watched titans in business say they’re changing their process… to be fair.”

  • Popular ‘SNL’ Trio Please Don’t Destroy’s Comedy Film is a Streaming Hit

An underrated and forgotten improv comedy film from 2023 is finding new life on streaming as Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is a hit on Peacock. The film was directed by Saturday Night Live veteran Paul Briganti, produced by Judd Apatow, and starred the SNL sketch-comedic group known as Please Don’t Destroy, actors and writers Martin Herily, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall. It currently sits at number nine on Peacock’s Top 10 streaming chart.

Their first film, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is essentially a feature-length version of the trio’s comedic skits. The story follows three childhood friends who try to come back together to rekindle their friendship by trying to find a treasure that they had been hunting for as children.

    The official plot reads:

In PLEASE DON’T DESTROY: THE TREASURE OF FOGGY MOUNTAIN, John Goodman narrates the adventure of Ben, Martin, and John, three childhood friends turned deadbeat co-workers, who fend off hairless bears, desperate park rangers (Meg Stalter and X Mayo) and a hypocritical cult leader (Bowen Yang) in the hopes of finding a priceless treasure, only to discover that finding the treasure is the easiest part of their journey.

A couple of big stars also appear in the film, including Conan O’Brien and Goodman, along with Stranger Thing’s Gaten Matarazzo as himself.

The film originally debuted on Peacock back on Nov. 17, 2023 and currently sits at an abysmal 42% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience rating is a sizzling 90%. On IMDb, it has a 6 / 10 average rating. Brian Tallerico gave the film 2.5 / 4 stars and wrote that “there’s a hysterical short film in here—something longer than their SNL sketches to be sure, but not quite feature-length.”

MovieWeb’s Olly Dyche enjoyed the film, writing:

“[The film] is a charming, rip-roaring comedy about three friends seeking to rekindle their friendship. The chemistry between the cast and their excellent comedic timing makes each anecdote or frivolous line of dialogue punchy and effective… The pacing here is quick, and the jokes come fast, making ‘The Treasure of Foggy Mountain’ easily one of the best comedies of the year.”

    Who is Please Don’t Destroy?

Please Don’t Destroy was started in 2017 by friends Herily, Higgins, and Marshall while attending school at NYU. The name comes from an act called Please Don’t Destroy My Farm. They have performed their skits around the country and joined the New York Comedy Festival in 2018.

  • Carnell Tate, Ohio State’s other 5-star WR, is OK doing the dirty work — but don’t take him for granted

ATLANTA — If you’ve watched any Ohio State football this fall, you know about phenom Jeremiah Smith and you’re probably familiar with his running mate Emeka Egbuka

The 1-2 punch at wide receiver makes the Buckeyes difficult on most days, impossible on others. But think about this: If you would have told any Texas Longhorns fan that Smith would finish the Cotton Bowl against them with one catch for three yards, and Egbuka would have five for 51 yards, they would take that in a heartbeat and booked their exorbitantly expensive trip here to Atlanta.

But the problem with attempting to defend Ohio State is they have another receiving threat who, at least in quarterback Will Howard’s opinion, could be a No. 1 wide receiver at most schools in the country: Carnell Tate. Against the Longhorns, Tate had seven catches for 87 yards, the second-most receiving yards a vaunted Texas secondary had allowed to a wideout in its prior seven games.

“I always knew the ball could come my way, but sometimes it comes my way more than others,” Tate told CBS Sports this weekend, ahead of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. “That game, it came my way more than it usually does. I just feel honored to put the team on my back and help the team come here.”

Tate is the engine of the Ohio State receiver corps. He’s content to do dirty work and excel with low volume and without the ball in his hands. Tate has a 78% catch rate, with 50 receptions on 64 targets throughout the season for 698 yards. He’s the third option for the Buckeyes as far as raw production is concerned, but don’t let that fool you into thinking he’s just a bit player on this team as he does hard to quantify things well.

“I think to be a great receiver, you have to be where you’re supposed to be when you’re supposed to be there with separation and catch the ball, and Carnell is there every single time,” offensive coordinator Chip Kelly said.

Kelly continued with what makes Tate special, the devil being in the details.

“If Carnell is supposed to be 18 yards on the left hash, when you look up when the quarterback gets to a second read, Carnell is at 18 yards at the left hash. There’s just a consistency to Carnell. He’s an unbelievable ball tracker, so there’s really a huge catch radius in terms of what he does, and there’s a toughness to him. A lot of our blocking schemes he’s our flanker or our z. He’s involved in a lot of digging out safeties, digging out linebackers, and Carnell, even though he doesn’t look like it, he’s probably our most physical blocker out there. So there’s just a consistency to CT that I think sometimes you take for granted, but he’s always where he’s supposed to be, and gets the job done.”

Tate was as touted as anyone in Ohio State’s receiver room when he committed in the summer of 2022 as a five-star prospect who would keep the run of incredible players at the position going. Tate ranked as the No. 22 player and No. 3 wide receiver in the Class of 2023. He played sparingly as a freshman, and as a sophomore stepped in to round out the receiving threats Ohio State has.

“I looked up to him coming in,” Smith said. “He was a grade above me. Playing with him at South Florida Express [7on7 team], just being on his team in college is something that I dreamed of for sure.”

Smith says that even though they’re much different sizes (Smith outweighs Tate by 20 pounds) he still tries to borrow pieces of his game, especially his smooth route running.

The fact about the current climate in college football is that a player like Tate could leave at any time for greener pastures in the transfer portal, and many may not have stuck around when a player like Smith joined the roster and immediately established himself as the team’s true No. 1 threat, but Tate was motivated to stay. It’s a similar story to Egbuka returning for his senior year to take a back seat to Smith, but their individual hard work has has helped the Buckeyes get 60 minutes from their ultimate team goal.

“I stuck around because Ohio State is where I wanted to be ultimately,” Tate told CBS sports. “I always had a dream of coming here and I’m living my dream right now.”

Carnell Tate, Ohio State’s highly-touted 5-star wide receiver recruit, may not always be the flashiest player on the field, but don’t underestimate the impact he can have on the game. While he may not always be the one making the spectacular catches or scoring the highlight-reel touchdowns, Tate is more than willing to do the dirty work that often goes unnoticed.

In a position where egos can often run rampant, Tate’s selflessness and willingness to do whatever is asked of him by his coaches and teammates sets him apart. Whether it’s blocking downfield to spring a teammate for a big gain, running crisp routes to open up space for other receivers, or simply being a decoy to draw coverage away from the team’s top playmakers, Tate is always willing to put the team first.

His work ethic and dedication to his craft have not gone unnoticed by his coaches and teammates, who appreciate the invaluable contributions he makes to the team’s success. While he may not always receive the same level of recognition as some of his more high-profile teammates, Tate’s importance to the team cannot be overstated.

So the next time you watch Ohio State take the field, don’t overlook Carnell Tate. While he may not always be the one grabbing the headlines, his willingness to do whatever is necessary to help his team win makes him an invaluable asset. Don’t take him for granted – Carnell Tate is a key piece of the Buckeyes’ success.
