  • Behind Closed Doors, Trudeau Says Trump Threat to Take Over Canada Is Real

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada on Friday made his first comments in response to President Trump’s repeated statements that he wants to annex Canada and make it the 51st state.

Mr. Trudeau made clear that he did not regard Mr. Trump’s statements as having been made in jest and believes annexation is something Canada needs to treat as a serious threat.

And he believes he knows why Mr. Trump covets Canada.

“I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have, but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state,” Mr. Trudeau told a gathering of company executives and business leaders in Toronto, according to people in the room who listened to his comments.

The news media had been asked to leave the room at the time Mr. Trudeau delivered his comments, but at least two news outlets, The Toronto Star and the CBC, were able to hear them and record them. Mr. Trudeau’s office declined to provide details of what the prime minister said.

“They’re very aware of our resources,” Mr. Trudeau added, “of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those.”

And he continued: “But Mr. Trump has it in mind that one of the easiest ways of doing that is absorbing our country. And it is a real thing.”

Mr. Trump has been talking about annexing Canada for weeks as he has laid the groundwork for plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States.

On Monday, Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Trump agreed to a 30-day reprieve on tariffs after Canada pledged to adopt a more stringent plan to secure its border with the United States.

During comments to reporters that day in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump again raised the statehood issue. “What I’d like to see, Canada become our 51st state,” he said. “I’d love to see that, but some people say that would be a long shot,” he added.

Canada is home to 31 minerals considered critical for use in various industries, including for electric car batteries, solar panels and semiconductors. Of those, Canada is prioritizing lithium, graphite, nickel, copper, cobalt and rare earth elements as part of a strategy to position itself as a leader in the global transition away from fossil fuels.

The supply chain is deeply integrated, and the health of the U.S. economy depends on Canada, said François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s industry minister.

“This is about a confident Canada,” Mr. Champagne told reporters at Friday’s meeting.

As part of its plan to fend off tariffs, Canada is implementing a border security plan in response to Mr. Trump’s accusations that the country is contributing to “massive” fentanyl trafficking to the United States, even though Canada is responsible for a tiny fraction of the fentanyl crossing the border.

Those measures include 10,000 personnel assigned to the border, along with helicopters, drones and canine teams. The government also said it would name a “fentanyl czar” to lead the response.

“We need to be very deliberate about how we continue to engage closely with the United States to make the case and demonstrate that Canada is responsible for a tiny part of the North American fentanyl problem,’’ Mr. Trudeau told the business leaders, “but that we are also bitterly touched by this tragedy.”

In a shocking revelation, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has admitted in a closed-door meeting that he believes President Donald Trump’s threat to take over Canada is real. The news has sent shockwaves throughout the country, as many Canadians are left wondering what this could mean for their sovereignty.

Trudeau reportedly made the comments during a private meeting with top government officials, where he expressed concern over Trump’s increasingly aggressive stance towards Canada. The President has previously made comments suggesting that he could potentially take military action against Canada if the country does not comply with his demands.

The revelation has sparked fears of a possible invasion or takeover by the United States, leaving many Canadians worried about their future. Trudeau’s admission has also raised questions about the state of Canada’s relationship with its southern neighbor, and whether the country is prepared to defend itself against any potential threats.

As tensions between the two countries continue to escalate, Canadians are left to wonder what the future holds for their nation. Will Trump follow through on his threats, or is this just political posturing? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the threat of a takeover by the United States is no longer just a distant possibility, but a very real concern for Canada.

  • As ICE knocks on doors in the suburbs, immigrant groups push solidarity

Federal agents knock on the door of a residence in Lyons during an immigration enforcement action over the weekend. Immigration authorities also have deployed in Palatine, Mundelein, Deer Park and Round Lake, advocates say.
    Bloomberg

As deportations ordered by President Donald Trump spread across the suburbs, advocacy groups said they’re intensifying efforts to keep Latino immigrants informed and unified amid unease.

Federal authorities have deployed in multiple towns in recent days, including Deer Park, Palatine, Mundelein, Round Lake and Waukegan, immigrant leaders said.

“Rightfully so, our communities are fearful, they’re anxious, they’re stressed,” said Dulce Ortiz, executive director of Mano a Mano Family Resource Center in Waukegan.

Last weekend, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers “were just knocking on doors at an apartment complex in Waukegan,” Ortiz said. If the agency is “targeting people with criminal backgrounds, why aren’t they holding warrants?”

Immigrant Solidarity DuPage Coordinator Cristobal Cavazos headed to Palatine on Sunday after hearing of a contingent of ICE officers parked near a popular Hispanic grocery store.

“They say, they’re just looking for criminals, don’t worry. But in the process, they nab anybody that they can get,” Cavazos said.

Trump Border Czar Tom Homan told News Nation Wednesday that of “last count there were like 700,000 illegal aliens in this country with a criminal conviction. That’s our No. 1 target.”

Itzel Sernas was unnerved Sunday afternoon when a number of vehicles parked near the Deer Park Mexican restaurant where she works and agents with the ICE insignia got out.

Immigration advocates provided the Daily Herald with video taken at a Palatine apartment complex where residents saw ICE officials deployed. ICE has not confirmed any actions in Palatine yet.
    Courtesy of Immigrant Solidarity DuPage

The officials surveyed the restaurant for a while and left.

“We were a little shocked,” Sernas said. “It is scary, but it’s sad (for) people who have lived here for so many years and are working hard. Why don’t you look for the people who are doing bad stuff instead of coming here and looking for people who are working hard?”

ISD and Mano a Mano spent weeks prior to the inauguration holding “Know Your Rights” sessions. Immigrant Solidarity is telling people, “Don’t talk, don’t open the door, don’t sign (anything) and ask to speak with a lawyer.”

“If they have no warrant, there is no obligation to open the door,” Cavazos said.

Still, undocumented longtime residents with jobs and families are looking over their shoulders, he noted.

“We’re trying to combat this paranoia with direct action and solidarity.”

ABC 7 reported an Elgin man without a criminal record was swept up by U.S. Marshals who had an arrest warrant for a relative Tuesday.

“I saw they were taking my dad through the side door. He was already in handcuffs; so, I didn’t know much,” daughter Janeth Lopez told ABC.

“No family deserves this,” she said in a GoFundMe post.

ICE has not yet responded to a Daily Herald request for information on suburban enforcement.

“Chicago was an outstanding operation,” Homan said Wednesday, adding agents have removed sexual predators, child predators, sex offenders, convicted murderers and numerous gang members.

“These were bad guys. It’s a dangerous operation, but we made Chicago a lot safer. The streets are a lot safer. It’s just a shame we can arrest these guys in the county jail, but they’re a sanctuary city, they won’t let us into the county jail.”

Other federal agencies like the FBI are assisting and “we want to increase the number of teams. We want to get the deportations up,” Homan said.

A “Know Your Rights” session is conducted by Immigrant Solidarity DuPage in December.

Meanwhile, Viator House of Hospitality in the Northwest suburbs is not expecting any issues.

The not-for-profit organization hosts young men who escaped violence and crime in foreign countries and are legally in the U.S. pursuing asylum claims. Residents either work or attend school while at Viator.

“We are confident that their rights to be in the United States will be respected during this era,” Executive Director the Rev. Corey Brost said.

In recent days, reports have surfaced of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents knocking on doors in suburban neighborhoods, spreading fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities. In response, immigrant advocacy groups have been working tirelessly to push for solidarity and support among residents.

The presence of ICE in suburban areas has heightened concerns among immigrant families, who fear being separated from their loved ones and facing deportation. In response, organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and local immigrant rights groups have been organizing Know Your Rights workshops, providing legal resources, and creating safe spaces for individuals to seek support.

One of the key messages from these groups is the importance of standing in solidarity with immigrant communities during this challenging time. By coming together and showing support for our neighbors, we can create a strong network of protection and advocacy against unjust immigration enforcement.

As ICE continues to target neighborhoods across the country, it is imperative that we stand united and speak out against these harmful actions. By working together to support and protect immigrant families, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society for all. Let’s show our solidarity and stand up for justice.

  • Fittipaldo Thinks Tomlin Handling Pickens Differently Behind Closed Doors

Fittipaldo Thinks Tomlin Handling Pickens Differently Behind Closed Doors

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a rut. In a few ways, they’re currently heading into the postseason with a myriad of ugly storylines. First, there’s the fact that they’ve lost three straight and their control over the AFC North. Both the offense and defense have had their issues as well. However, one notable storyline that’s presenting itself this week revolves around receiver George Pickens.

That type of thing is something we’ve heard a lot this year. Pickens is putting together another solid year and remains the lifeline of the Steelers offense. There are always the good things that Pickens does on the field. Likewise, the headlines he creates off of it are just as loud.

Most recently, Pickens is under-fire for not running a route during the Steelers’ Christmas Day loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which ended up leading to a red zone interception. Things got more tense, and much more confusing, when Pickens abruptly ended his media time early this week after being asked about the play. It was a confusing situation overall, and admittedly wasn’t the best look for the star receiver.

However, moments like that in front of the media are the only things the world gets to see. There are things that happen, and conversations that happen behind closed doors that sometimes never come to light. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo thinks things are happening much differently in the building. He shared these thoughts on 93.7 The Fan on Friday.

“He [Mike Tomlin] doesn’t tell us the truth all the time,” Fittipaldo said of the situation regarding George Pickens. “And I think this is definitely a situation where he’s not telling us the truth…Are there communication issues? Yeah. But I think things are being handled behind closed doors in a much different way than they’re being handled before the media.”

It’s possible that Fittipaldo is right. Mike Tomlin’s made his legacy by being able to connect with his players on a level that most coaches can’t reach. He’s no stranger to star players who find themselves in the headlines. Coaching a player like Pickens isn’t anything new to Tomlin. It would be reasonable to assume Tomlin has handled all of this with Pickens and Wilson differently than the media has seen.

With that said, things do need to improve on Saturday night. A potential loss on Saturday, especially one full of frustration from Pickens only makes things more hectic with the media. This hasn’t been a peaceful season for Pickens, but he has a chance to end the regular season on a high note on Saturday.

In a recent interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers beat writer Joe Rutter shared his thoughts on head coach Mike Tomlin’s handling of star wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. According to Rutter, Tomlin has been taking a different approach with Smith-Schuster behind closed doors.

Rutter explained that Tomlin has been giving Smith-Schuster more one-on-one attention and working closely with him to address any issues or concerns. This personalized approach is in stark contrast to how Tomlin has handled other players in the past, leading many to speculate that Smith-Schuster’s status as a pending free agent may be a factor.

While Rutter did not go into specifics about what exactly Tomlin is doing differently with Smith-Schuster, he did suggest that the coach is taking a more hands-on approach in an effort to keep the talented receiver happy and motivated.

It remains to be seen how this behind-the-scenes approach will impact Smith-Schuster’s performance on the field, but one thing is for certain – Tomlin is pulling out all the stops to ensure that his star receiver is in top form for the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • ‘Morrison Hotel’ made famous by The Doors burns down in downtown LA

‘Morrison Hotel’ made famous by The Doors burns down in downtown LA

Firefighters are investigating to determine if homeless people are responsible for a large fire that destroyed the historic Morrison Hotel Thursday in downtown Los Angeles. The former hotel, located at the intersection of Pico and Hope, has been vacant for about 10 years.

Around 11:20 a.m., more than 100 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department were called to the four-story, nearly 100-year-old building that was erupting in massive flames. Cellphone video shared with FOX 11 shows at least one person trying to leave the property on an outside fire escape.

Although the building is vacant, fire officials said there were some homeless people in the structure, and ladders were raised to the building’s windows to help them exit.

“In the fire department, we say there are no vacant buildings in the City of Los Angeles,” said David Ortiz from LAFD. “A lot of the large, unhoused community uses these vacant buildings as their temporary residences. Several dozen [today] were seen self-evacuating at the time of the fire.”

The fire department classified the incident as a major emergency, deploying 17 fire companies to the scene. The fire was knocked down within an hour and a half. No major injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters.

The Doors rock band made the Morrison Hotel famous with their 1970s album also called “The Morrison Hotel.” The building itself was built in 1914 and is considered a landmark. Last year, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation purchased the property for almost $12 million with plans of transforming it into affordable housing.

“It’s been vacant for probably 10 years,” said Mark Dyer from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “We were going to renovate it and create another 111 units.”

According to Dyer, he had complained to the city about homeless people breaking into the Morrison. Dyer says he worried about a possible fire. “Last week when we cleared the building, there were about 15 [homeless people inside],” said Dyer. “As soon as we secure the building, the homeless come up with power tools within hours and just cut the locks off.”

The historic hotel now has no roof and has been “red-tagged” by the city. It’s considered unlivable. East and west traffic on Pico Boulevard was temporarily closed, and officials advised drivers to avoid Pico and Hope in the downtown area.

“It was just a big fire,” said Juan Jose Gutierrez, a nearby business owner. “I personally have never seen a big fire like that. [The affordable housing] would have been nice for the community, but unfortunately, the building is no more.”

    Downtown LAInstastoriesHomeless Crisis

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that the iconic Morrison Hotel, made famous by The Doors, has burned down in downtown Los Angeles. The historic building, which was featured on the cover of The Doors’ album of the same name, was a beloved landmark for music fans around the world.

The Morrison Hotel was a symbol of the 1960s counterculture movement and a hub for creativity and artistic expression. Its loss is a devastating blow to the music community and to those who cherished its place in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragic event. The memories and legacy of the Morrison Hotel will live on forever in the hearts of music lovers everywhere. Rest in peace, Morrison Hotel.
