  • Is Patrick Dorgu Man United’s answer to Gareth Bale?

Signed by Lecce for a modest €200,000 in July 2022, Patrick Dorgu moved to Italy without even having played a senior game for Danish Superliga club FC Nordsjælland. Acquired as a prospect for the future, he started off in Lecce’s under-19 ranks before being drafted into the first team the following summer — making his full debut in the opening league fixture of the 2023-24 season (a 2-1 home win against Lazio.)

His first season was always going to be a learning curve, yet he still clocked up 32 Serie A appearances, mainly featuring as a left-back. This season, though, he’s just missed one game (through injury) and started the other 20 in a variety of positions, while he also got a call-up to the senior Denmark national team.

Dorgu — who is one of three footballing brothers, with 18-year-old Ifenna playing for Genoa‘s youth team — even scored within a minute of coming on for his international debut against Switzerland in September. He is set to take a step up to a whole other level, after sealing a €30 million (plus €5m in add-ons) transfer to Manchester United.

    Position

Having come through the Nordsjælland youth ranks as a left-back, Dorgu started his Lecce career in the same position. But then-head coach Luca Gotti — who arrived toward the end of last season — saw him as much more than an out-and-out defensive player.

As a first step, Gotti (who was replaced as Lecce coach by Marco Giampaolo in late November) pushed the teenager forward to the left-wing/midfield slot, before using him as a left-footed right-winger at the start of this season. That move saw Gotti draw comparisons between Dorgu and former Real Madrid and Tottenham star Gareth Bale.

“He seems to have great adaptability,” Gotti told Calciomercato. “He enjoys playing on the pitch. Important people from the football world are starting to call me to ask me what I see … [Bale] became a forward. He could have played as a full-back. This could happen with Dorgu.”

    Strengths

Aside from his versatility, Dorgu’s most eye-catching attribute is that the physicality that gave him an edge at youth level is still serving him well. He’s athletic and deals well with challenges when defending and attacking. Dorgu is also a powerful runner over long distances who quickly reaches top speed from a standing position.

His enthusiasm for the game has been key to his success. Whenever he receives the ball, he’s prepared to push forward and ranks within the top sixth percentile of Serie A midfielders for ball-carries.

He is a skilled dribbler and when driving forward, he’s always looking for passing options to start an attack or find room for a shot on goal. While his pace and direct running are his primary means of beating opponents, he is also full of tricks with dummies, faints and rapid changes of direction.

Following his resurgence as a right-winger this season, Dorgu has shown a great aptitude for cutting inside and using his left foot to score with a curled finish. He is often quickly able to free himself from his marker when shifting the ball centrally on his stronger side. His appreciation of combination play, varying his overlapping and underlapping runs, is also developing.

To his credit, Dorgu’s energetic and all-action style also come to the fore in the defensive side of the game as he tracks back diligently and is quickly able to regain his position when the team lose possession.

    How he can improve

Despite his quick ascent, Dorgu, as a 20-year-old, has certain aspects of his game which are still in need of polishing. His relentlessly positive approach can lead to him to lose the ball in dangerous areas. And while his dribbling is a strong point, the drawback of a high-volume dribbler from deep positions is that they run the risk of running into pressure or blind alleys — especially when venturing infield.

By the same token, Dorgu’s decision-making will often see him choose an attacking option when simply keeping his position is the best call.

Defensively, he tends to rely on his recovering speed, rather than reading an opponent’s move before intervening/intercepting. Part of his attractiveness is that he’s an intense, high-octane multi-purpose wide player rather than a calculating, well-balanced expert full-back. But this can lead to him getting into trouble in defensive one-on-ones when he’s short of a covering teammate.

    Who else were linked?

The most recent reports linked Dorgu with interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but he has also seen Italian sides Internazionale, AC Milan, Juventus, and Napoli take note.

How will he fit at Manchester United?

Based on his inherent qualities, Dorgu looks like an intriguing prospect for United’s left wing-back berth. Given his somewhat distinctive skill set — slightly untidy tactically, yet technically sound and with bags of energy — the role should suit him.

The fact that he will be supported by a third centre-back in a 3-4-2-1 formation will help him defensively and give him the license to roam forward from a higher position than usual for a full-back, where he can make an attacking impact. Amorim may be tempted to field Dorgu on the opposite side (the right) to make use of his shooting/finishing capabilities, but it would be wise to first let him find his feet in Premier League on his more-familiar left side.

Bringing in such a high-energy player should spark this lethargic and static Manchester United side into life. But there’s also a chance his youthful fervor might be suffocated by the general lack of oxygen around the club.

With Manchester United’s recent struggles in the Premier League, fans and pundits alike have been searching for answers as to how the Red Devils can climb back to the top of English football. One name that has been gaining traction as a potential solution is Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu, a talented winger currently playing for United’s youth academy, has been turning heads with his speed, skill, and eye for goal. Many believe that he has the potential to become the next Gareth Bale, a dynamic and explosive player who can change the course of a game with a single moment of brilliance.

With United’s lack of creativity and goal-scoring threat in recent matches, Dorgu’s inclusion in the first team could provide the spark that the team desperately needs. His ability to take on defenders, deliver pinpoint crosses, and score goals from distance make him a versatile and dangerous weapon in attack.

While Dorgu may still be young and relatively unproven at the top level, his talent and potential are undeniable. If given the opportunity to shine on the big stage, he could very well be the answer to United’s problems and become the next superstar in the making.

Only time will tell if Dorgu can live up to the hype and fill the void left by the departure of Gareth Bale, but one thing is for certain – United fans are eagerly anticipating the rise of this exciting young talent. Watch this space, as Patrick Dorgu could be the key to Manchester United’s resurgence.

  • Man Utd sign Patrick Dorgu: Can ‘glitch in the matrix’ solve Ruben Amorim’s problem?

Dorgu’s story began with local youth football in his home city of Copenhagen, as well as playing with his siblings. One of his brothers is an attacker for Genoa’s under-20 team, while the other is a goalkeeper in Denmark’s lower leagues.

At 12 years old he was scouted by Danish Superliga side Nordsjaelland, a club – owned by the Right To Dream academy in Ghana – renowned for producing promising young talents. Brighton’s Simon Adingra and Brentford duo Mathias Jensen and Mikkel Damsgaard are among the academy’s alumni.

Nordsjaelland are specialists at developing youngsters, with the best of the best spending a season or two with the first team before moving on.

Yet in 2022, newly promoted Serie A side Lecce paid about €200,000 (£167,000) to sign the then 17-year-old Dorgu before he had made a single senior appearance.

“He’s sort of a glitch in the matrix,” Karsten Krogh, Serie A journalist at Danish podcast Mediano, tells BBC Sport.

“He never really did that well as a youth player in Denmark, he was never a star anywhere. It wasn’t like the other teams in Denmark were lining up to get his signature.”

After helping Lecce win the Italian under-19 title in his first season, the club’s then-first team manager Roberto d’Aversa fast-tracked Dorgu into his squad.

“He’s growing a lot and I see a bright future for him,” D’Aversa said at the time.

“In football there are no ages, there are strong players and less strong ones. He is one of the strong players.”

This season Dorgu has switched between the right wing and left-back in a back four, providing three assists and scoring once while starting all but one of Lecce’s Serie A games.

His performances have convinced United to take action, even if his childhood dream was to play for Chelsea.

In a surprising move, Manchester United has signed Portuguese midfielder Patrick Dorgu in a deal that has left many fans scratching their heads. With Ruben Amorim struggling to find his form in recent matches, could this ‘glitch in the matrix’ be the solution to his problem?

Dorgu, known for his lightning-fast speed and precision passing, could provide the creative spark that United has been missing in midfield. With his ability to break down defenses and create scoring opportunities, he could be the key to unlocking United’s attacking potential.

However, some skeptics are questioning whether Dorgu is the right fit for United’s style of play. With Amorim’s struggles, the pressure will be on Dorgu to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact.

Only time will tell if this unexpected signing will pay off for United. Can Dorgu be the missing piece in the puzzle that helps United turn their season around? Or will this ‘glitch in the matrix’ only add to Amorim’s problems? Stay tuned to find out.

Manchester United have signed Denmark defender Patrick Dorgu from Lecce on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

The deal for the 20-year-old is worth £25m (30m euros), with a potential £4.1m (5m euros) in add-ons.

Dorgu has made 57 appearances for Lecce since his senior debut at the start of last season, having joined the club at youth level in 2022.

“I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player – this is a very special day for my whole family,” said Dorgu.

“I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim. His vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions.”

Talks over a loan move for United’s Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia, 25, to join Portuguese club Benfica have broken down.

Meanwhile, Red Devils striker Marcus Rashford is scheduled to have a medical at Aston Villa before completing a loan move to the Midlands club.

Rashford has not featured for United since being dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim for the Manchester derby on 12 December.

Manchester United have made a big move in the transfer market, signing defender Patrick Dorgu from Italian club Lecce for a reported fee of £25m. The Denmark international has lined up as a starter in every other Serie A match he has been available for this season. He has only missed one other game in 2024-25, which came against Torino four matches into the season when he was surviving a one-match suspension.

He has been replaced by Antonino Gallo in the starting line-up for tonight’s match against Parma.

Dorgu is expected to officially join Manchester United before the January transfer deadline on Monday.

Lecce and Manchester United have already agreed upon fees, there is an agreement on personal terms, and the 20-year-old is expected to travel over to the UK for his medical with United over the weekend.

Italian club Lecce has left out Nigerian striker Emmanuel Dennis, also known as Dorgu, from their starting line-up as they wait for his move to Manchester United to be finalized.

Dorgu has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League giants after impressing with his performances in Serie A. The 24-year-old has scored six goals in 19 league appearances so far this season, catching the eye of several top clubs.

Lecce has decided to leave Dorgu out of their line-up as they wait for the transfer to be completed, with the player reportedly keen on making the move to Old Trafford. The Italian club is said to be holding out for a substantial transfer fee for the talented striker.

Manchester United are in need of attacking reinforcements, and Dorgu could provide a much-needed boost to their forward line. The Red Devils will be hoping to wrap up the deal quickly so that Dorgu can join them and start making an impact in the Premier League.

Fans of both Lecce and Manchester United will be eagerly awaiting further developments in this transfer saga as they wait to see where Dorgu will be playing his football in the near future. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transfer story.

  • Manchester United make €30m Patrick Dorgu offer to Lecce

Manchester United have tabled a €30million (£25.3m; $31.4m) bid for Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu.

The Athletic reported on January 22 that the two clubs were €10m apart in negotiations for the Denmark international, who Lecce priced at €40m while United indicated a willingness to go to €30m.

United’s director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves met with Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino in Milan.

Figures at United are hopeful that a deal will be agreed and if one is, Dorgu would become the first senior arrival at Old Trafford under head coach Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese has been keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Why Manchester United have a cash problem

The versatile Dorgu, who is left-footed, is capable of playing on either flank and has a profile compatible with Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.

The 20-year-old has been capped four times by Denmark and has made 43 first-team appearances for Lecce, who he joined from Danish club Nordsjaelland in 2022. He has scored three times in Serie A this term.

The right-sided wing-back role has most often been filled by Amad, who is naturally a wide forward, or the versatile defender Noussair Mazraoui, who joined from Bayern Munich in the summer. While on the left, Diogo Dalot has been Amorim’s preferred option with Luke Shaw out injured and Tyrell Malacia only recently returning from an absence of more than a year.

In a surprising move, Manchester United has reportedly made a €30m offer to Italian club Lecce for their talented young midfielder Patrick Dorgu. The 20-year-old has been turning heads with his impressive performances in Serie A this season, and it seems that the Red Devils are keen to secure his services.

Dorgu has been likened to Manchester United legend Paul Pogba for his playing style and potential, and it’s no wonder that the Premier League giants are interested in bringing him to Old Trafford. The Nigerian-born midfielder has already made a name for himself in Italy, and he could be a valuable addition to United’s midfield.

Lecce are said to be considering the offer, as they may be tempted by the significant sum being offered for Dorgu. However, they will want to ensure that they are adequately compensated for losing one of their most promising talents.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United’s bid will be accepted, but fans of the club will no doubt be excited at the prospect of seeing Dorgu in the famous red jersey. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing transfer saga.

  • Man United continue to push for Patrick Dorgu deal – sources

Manchester United are continuing to work on a deal for Patrick Dorgu before the transfer deadline, sources have told ESPN.

Lecce have already knocked back an offer of €20 million ($20.9m) plus €5m in add-ons for the 20-year-old Denmark international.

Sources have told ESPN that talks between the two clubs are ongoing and that there is growing confidence an overall package of close to €40m can be agreed.

Ruben Amorim is keen to add a left wing-back to his squad in January. United, according to sources, have also explored the possibility of triggering their €18m buy-back option to re-sign Álvaro Fernández from Benfica.

The former Old Trafford academy graduate, who has impressed in Portugal, is considered a fallback option if a deal for Dorgu cannot be agreed. Should either Dorgu or Fernández arrive, United will listen to loan offers from Tyrell Malacia.

There’s hope that Luke Shaw is close to a comeback from injury and a temporary move until the end of the season would allow Malacia to play regularly. The Dutchman has made seven appearances this season after spending more than a year sidelined with a knee injury.

Sources have also told ESPN that United will listen to loan offers for Casemiro before Monday’s deadline. The Brazil international has started just one of the last 11 games and has been an unused substitute in the last six matches.

His last appearance was in the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Dec. 30. Roma have expressed interest in signing the 32-year-old until the end of the season.

Sources have told ESPN that United are willing to pay a portion of Casemiro’s wages — more than £300k-a-week — to make the move happen.

According to sources close to the club, Manchester United are continuing to push for a deal to sign Patrick Dorgu. The talented young midfielder has been on the radar of the Red Devils for some time now, and it seems they are determined to bring him to Old Trafford.

Dorgu, who currently plays for a top European club, has been turning heads with his performances on the pitch. His skill, vision, and creativity have caught the attention of many top clubs, but it seems United are the frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Reports suggest that negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs, with United keen to secure Dorgu’s services before the transfer window closes. The club’s management and coaching staff believe that the young midfielder has the potential to become a key player for the team in the future.

United fans will be eagerly awaiting any developments on this potential transfer, as the prospect of adding a player of Dorgu’s caliber to the squad is an exciting one. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Giampaolo deciderà all’ultimo. A centrocampo agiranno ancora Coulibaly, Pierret e Helgason, in attacco favoriti Pierotti, Krstovic e Morente.

In difesa davanti a De Gea ci saranno i soliti Dodo, Ranieri e Gosens con Adli e Mandragora pronti a centrocampo.

Pronti i controlli nelle prossime ore.

  • Manchester United in talks to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce

Manchester United are in talks to sign left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

Discussions have begun over the 20-year-old as United line up options ahead of making decisions on ins and outs this month.

Nothing is yet agreed but dialogue is progressing with head coach Ruben Amorim keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his new side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Dorgu, who has been capped four times by Denmark, has made 43 first-team appearances for Lecce having joined from Danish club Nordsjælland in 2022. He has scored three times in Serie A this term.

He signed a new contract in October that runs until 2028.

United’s squad is in need of more players suited to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation with Dorgu, who has featured on both flanks, seen as one of that profile.

Diogo Dalot is a specialist right-back yet has been deployed in the left-wing back role, while first-choice left-back Luke Shaw has been yet to make a start in any competition this season due to injuries, having been limited to just 12 Premier League starts in 2023-24.

The Athletic reported earlier in January that United were exploring a loan exit for left-back Tyrell Malacia.

The right-sided wing-back role has most often been filled by Amad, who is naturally a wide forward, or the versatile defender Noussair Mazraoui, who joined from Bayern Munich in the summer.

Ruben Amorim’s starting XI is starting to take shape… and there’s some bad news

‘Dorgu could add the dynamism United have been sorely lacking’

Analysis by Manchester United correspondent Mark Critchley

After nailing their colours to the Amorim mast, United need to significantly reshape the squad so that it suits his 3-4-2-1 system and no more so than at wing-back.

United’s system requires players in those positions who have the athleticism and physicality to dominate an entire flank contributing at both ends of the pitch.

Left wing-back is especially a priority. United spent the vast majority of last season without a natural left-footed full-back due to Shaw and Malacia’s lack of availability. Shaw’s injury problems have persisted, while Malacia appears unfancied by Amorim.

Dalot has deputised in the role so far but is naturally a full-back and lacks some of the attacking thrust which made Amorim’s wing-backs such an integral part of his system at Sporting CP.

Dorgu, meanwhile, is left-footed and has even operated as a right winger for Lecce this season, with three goals and one assist for the relegation-threatened Serie A side.

Should the Denmark international become Amorim’s first signing, the hope would be that he provides the dynamism on the left flank that United have been sorely lacking during his first two months in charge.

According to reports, Manchester United are in talks to sign Nigerian forward Patrick Dorgu from Serie A club Lecce. The 21-year-old has been making a name for himself in Italy and has caught the eye of several top clubs, with United reportedly leading the race for his signature.

Dorgu is known for his pace, skill, and eye for goal, and has been compared to former United striker Romelu Lukaku. The Red Devils are keen to bolster their attacking options, and see Dorgu as a player who could make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Negotiations are said to be at an advanced stage, with both clubs working towards a deal that could see Dorgu move to Old Trafford in the coming weeks. United fans are excited about the prospect of seeing the young forward in action, and are hopeful that he can help the team challenge for major honours next season.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing transfer story.
