  • NFL awards 2024: Lions, Vikings double up in voting for Sporting News’ honors

With the end of another NFL season and Super Bowl 59’s arrival, it’s time for the outlets covering the league to hand out major individual NFL awards. For Sporting News, that means revealing our prestigious pro football honors, too. The long-standing process was the same for 2024, as all the worthy recipients were determined by peer voting from around the league.

For Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year, the winners were selected by fellow players. The 927 ballots received for Offensive Player of the Year were the most since players began participating in the voting in 2008.

Only head coaches were allowed to vote for Coordinator of the Year and Coach of the Year. Only front-office staff and personnel decision-makers were allowed to vote for Executive of the Year.

In every case, players, coaches, and executives were advised not to pick anyone from their own team. Ballots were sent out electronically around the league, with a majority of teams voting before the early-January deadline. Below are those results — some of which might raise a few eyebrows.

MORE: Meet SN’s NFL All-Pro team | History of Sporting News’ NFL awards

Offensive Player of the Year: Saquon Barkley, RB, Eagles

    2024 stats: 345 carries, 2,005 rushing yards, 13 TDs; 33 receptions for 278 yards, 2 TDs

Barkley had a monster season coming over from the NFC East rival Giants in free agency. He’s only the second Eagles player to win Sporting News NFL Player of the Year, 70 years since it was first awarded in 1954, following quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in 1960. He is the first Eagle to receive this honor since the award was split into separate offensive and defensive honors in 2008.

Barkley follows recent non-quarterback winners Tyreek Hill (2023), Justin Jefferson (2022), and Jonathan Taylor (2021), getting the nod that previous recent NFL rushing leaders Christian McCaffrey and Josh Jacobs didn’t get. Barkley got noticed for his big rushing total and bigger plays to lead the Eagles’ run-heavy offense, ending multiple seasons of frustration with his first team. He received 369 votes from his fellow players, almost twice as much as second-place finisher Josh Allen (188 votes).

MORE: Why Saquon Barkley is SN’s Offensive Player of the Year

Defensive Player of the Year: Myles Garrett, EDGE Browns

    2024 stats: 14 sacks, 3 forced fumbles

Garrett is the first DPOY to repeat for SN since fellow future Hall of Famer J.J. Watt got back-to-back nods as a Texans defensive end in 2014 and 2015. Garrett remained his dominant pass-rushing and run-disrupting self, despite the Browns defense dropping off its production as a whole with some shakier back seven play. Garrett posted 14 sacks for a second consecutive season. He received 196 votes from his fellow players, finishing well ahead of his chief rival, the Steelers‘ T.J. Watt (121 votes), a recent previous winner.

MORE: How Myles Garrett’s rare back-to-back DPOY compares to J.J. Watt

Comeback Player of the Year: Sam Darnold, QB, Vikings

2024 stats: 4,319 passing yards, 35 TDs, 12 INTs, 7.9 yards per attempt, 66.2 completion percentage, 102.5 passer rating

Darnold is the second Vikings player to win the award since its SN inception in 2008, following Adrian Peterson and his 2,097-yard rushing season in 2012. Quarterbacks have dominated this award of late, winning seven consecutive times. Andrew Luck started the streak in 2018, and Tua Tagovailoa continued it as the previous winner.

Darnold received 503 votes and won by a considerable margin over another quarterback, Joe Burrow (144 votes), who had a massive season after missing much of 2023. He also didn’t have much competition from Chargers running back JK Dobbins (109 votes), who came back from a torn Achilles to star for his new team. The nature of the award is to come back well from poor play and adversity, not just injury. Darnold got the nod for his late-blooming season in Minnesota being so impressive.

Rookie of the Year: Jayden Daniels, QB, Commanders

2024 stats: 3,568 passing yards, 25 passing TDs, 9 INTs, 7.4 yards per pass attempt, 69.0 completion percentage, 100.1 passer rating, 891 rushing yards, 6 rushing TDs

Daniels is the third Washington player to win this award since its inception in 1955, joining fellow quarterback Robert Griffin III (2012) and Hall of Fame wide receiver Charley Taylor (1964). Daniels set rookie records for completion percentage and rushing yards by a QB. He won the Rookie of the Year award by a wide margin, receiving 454 votes, with Raiders tight end Brock Bowers getting the second most votes with 218.

He also got close to taking the Commanders to the Super Bowl after leading Washington to a 12-5 turnaround and road wins in the wild-card and divisional rounds. He has a case for being the best rookie QB in NFL history given his dual-threat production and franchise-changing professionalism. Daniels is on the early watchlist to win his first MVP in 2025.

MORE: Why Jayden Daniels is Rookie of the Year over Brock Bowers, Bo Nix

Coach of the Year: Kevin O’Connell, Vikings

O’Connell also is an honorary coordinator of the year given he calls plays for Minnesota’s prolific offense, which finished No. 12 in passing and No. 9 in scoring. He got this award for adjusting well at QB to get a career year from Darnold after rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy went down with a preseason knee injury. He also had a strong staff led by Flores.

The former Rams assistant is only 39, with plenty more good years ahead. O’Connell dominated the voting by his peers, receiving 14 votes, finishing well ahead of runners-up Dan Campbell, who won the award for leading the Lions last season, and Andy Reid (three votes each).

Coordinator of the Year: Ben Johnson, OC, Lions

Johnson (nine votes) beat out two defensive coordinators, the Vikings’ Brian Flores (three votes) and the Eagles’ Vic Fangio (two votes), to capture the award rather easily. Just like 2023 winner Mike Macdonald, who won this award as Ravens coordinator before taking the Seahawks head coaching job, Johnson is leaving his team.

Johnson will try to lead the NFC North rival Bears and franchise QB Caleb Williams to big things. In Johnson’s final season with the Lions, they were No. 2 in average yardage per game (409.5), No. 2 in total passing yards (4,474), No. 5 in total rushing yards (2,488), and No. 1 in average scoring per game (33.2 points).

Executive of the Year: Brad Holmes, GM, Lions

Campbell couldn’t repeat but Holmes (nine votes) did, despite some tough competition from Brandon Beane (Bills, five votes), Eric DeCosta (Ravens, three votes), Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (Vikings, three votes), Howie Roseman (Eagles, three votes), and Adam Peters (Commanders, two votes).

Holmes had a strong offseason again with rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, defensive tackle D.J. Reader, guard Kevin Zeitler, and kicker Jake Bates among the key additions to bolster a roster he loaded with young and more experienced talent. The respect for Holmes remains high in a league full of great decision-makers.

The NFL awards for the 2024 season are in, and it’s a double win for the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings in Sporting News’ annual honors.

The Lions and Vikings each took home multiple awards, showcasing their standout performances on the field this past season.

For the Lions, quarterback Jared Goff was named Offensive Player of the Year, while defensive end Romeo Okwara earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Head coach Dan Campbell also received recognition, winning Coach of the Year for his leadership and team’s success.

On the other side, the Vikings saw running back Dalvin Cook take home the title of Offensive Player of the Year, and linebacker Eric Kendricks was named Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach Kevin O’Connell rounded out the honors, winning Coach of the Year for his impressive debut season.

Overall, it was a successful year for both the Lions and Vikings, and their players and coaches are deserving of the recognition they received in the Sporting News awards. Congratulations to all the winners!

  • ‘Trust me, it’s a risk’… Alex Pereira’s decision to corner Sean Strickland at UFC 312 slammed by former double champ

Ahead of Sean Strickland’s title rematch against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 312, he has drafted in the assistance of current light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira.

Despite Sean Strickland and Alex Pereira being former opponents of each other, the two became good friends and now consistently train together.

‘Tarzan’ is scheduled to rematch the middleweight champion, Dricus Du Plessis in the UFC 312 main event on February 8, in what is one of the biggest rivalries in recent years.

Ahead of their scheduled fight, both fighters have continuously traded blows with each other online, which started with Strickland offering a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ pact for their fight to only be striking.

READ MORE: Dricus Du Plessis explains how he hones trash talk after making UFC champions cry in press conferences

Daniel Cormier questions Pereira’s decision to corner Strickland at UFC 312

With Strickland having controversially earned a rematch with ‘Stillknocks’ despite having only picked up a win over Paulo Costa since their last fight, he is hoping to re-write the wrongs of his last fight.

And in hoping to do that, he has drafted in the help of ‘Poatan’, who will be part of his corner team in Sydney, Australia.

Despite the 37-year-old champion agreeing to help his teammate, his decision has been questioned by former UFC double champion turned commentator, Daniel Cormier.

‘DC’ has questioned whether it is sensible for the Brazilian to travel all the way across the world to sit in Strickland’s corner when he should be preparing for his own title fight.

At UFC 313 on March 8, Pereira will defend his 205lb title against his most difficult test to date in number one contender, Magomed Ankalaev.

With his fight against the soaring Russian so close to UFC 312, Cormier believes Pereira is making a ‘dangerous’ decision that he could come to regret.

“What we do know is that Alex Pereira is going to be fighting a guy that could be his most formidable opponent because of the style,” Cormier began to explain on his YouTube channel.

“But we also have to take into effect that his relationship with Strickland is so strong that he’s willing to travel across the world to corner him. To me, it seems dangerous.

“It seems risky for Alex to go all the way to Australia knowing everything that goes into a training camp and how hard that travel can be on your body when you’re preparing to continue to defend your world championship.

“So how strong is that bond? How much does Sean Strickland now mean to Alex Pereira for him to take that risk? Because trust me, it’s a risk,” he continued.

Alex Pereira continues to tease a move up to heavyweight

Prior to the UFC booking his title defense against Ankalaev, ‘Poatan’ continuously hinted at potentially moving up to heavyweight to take on Jon Jones in a superfight.

Although interim champion, Tom Aspinall is still confident a title unification fight can be made, Pereira wants to shake things up by fighting ‘Bones’ himself.

If Jones does stick around to fight Aspinall, despite having admitted that he isn’t keen on the idea and will likely retire instead, Pereira will be keeping a close eye on that as he will potentially face the winner.

Former double champ Alex Pereira’s decision to corner Sean Strickland at UFC 312 has raised eyebrows among fans and fellow fighters alike.

Pereira, known for his knockout power and striking prowess, has made a name for himself in the MMA world. However, his decision to corner Strickland, a potential future opponent, has left many questioning his motives.

While some believe Pereira’s move is a strategic one, others see it as a risky gamble that could backfire. With tensions already running high between the two fighters, Pereira’s presence in Strickland’s corner could potentially add fuel to the fire.

Only time will tell if Pereira’s decision will pay off or if it will end up being a costly mistake. One thing is for sure, though – in the world of MMA, trust is hard to come by, and sometimes, taking a risk is the only way to get ahead.

  • FPL tips and team of gameweek 24: First double gameweek of season

Mohamed Salah (captain), Liverpool, £13.7m – Bournemouth (a), Everton (a)

Triple-captaining Salah this week is probably the way forward.

No, it is not very exciting given a lot of FPL managers will do the same and almost everybody in the game will at least captain him.

And, if you are chasing in your mini-league, saving the chip for a differential, high-upside punt later in the season might be a good idea.

But we are talking about the best player in the game, in the middle of a historic FPL season, who could easily put up 20-30 points across the two games and you would not be surprised.

Playing the Assistant Manager chip on Arne Slot this week instead would give you these two games, Wolves at home and Manchester City away, so it is a longer-term play than Triple Captain.

It feels safe but with even less upside. For context, Liverpool could win both gameweek 24 matches 2-1 and your Assistant Manager chip would only earn you 16 points.

There is more upside with Triple Captain and there are likely to be at least two more bigger double gameweeks this season where your Bench Boost and Free Hit chips will work better.

Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford, £7.8m – home to Spurs

The Cameroon attacking midfielder has not been in this team for three weeks but he is not a player you can leave out for long.

He’s Salah-light – his team’s talisman, is on penalties, is consistent and loves a double-digit haul.

Home to leaky Tottenham is too juicy a match to pass up.

Cole Palmer, Chelsea, £11.3m – home to West Ham

    Palmer’s last six gameweeks: 10, 2, 10, 10, 2, 2.

You know what you are getting with the England playmaker at this point and it is hard to ignore him in a home game against any team.

Mikkel Damsgaard, Brentford, £5m – home to Spurs

Tottenham’s defence is so suspect that a second Brentford asset makes the team this week.

With Kevin Schade carrying a knock and no space for Yoan Wissa up front, Denmark’s Damsgaard comes in.

He seems to be growing in importance for the Bees with every game. In the past six games, Damsgaard has three assists and more key passes and big chances created than any other Brentford player.

As we enter gameweek 24 of the Fantasy Premier League, managers are gearing up for the first double gameweek of the season. This means that some teams will have two fixtures to rack up those all-important points, making it a crucial week for FPL success.

Here are some tips to help you navigate through this double gameweek:

    1. Load up on players from teams with two fixtures: Teams like Manchester City, Everton, Burnley, Fulham, and Aston Villa have double gameweeks, so consider stacking your team with players from these sides.

    2. Captaincy choice is key: With two games, your captain can potentially earn double the points. Look for players who are in good form and have favorable fixtures to maximize your chances of a big haul.

    3. Keep an eye on injuries and rotation: Double gameweeks can be tricky as managers may rotate their squads to manage fatigue. Stay updated on team news to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

    Team of the gameweek:

    GK: Nick Pope (Burnley)
    DEF: Lucas Digne (Everton)
    DEF: Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)
    DEF: Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa)
    MID: Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)
    MID: James Maddison (Leicester City)
    MID: Ruben Dias (Manchester City)
    MID: Jack Grealish (Aston Villa)
    FWD: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
    FWD: Chris Wood (Burnley)
    FWD: Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

This team combines players from teams with double gameweeks along with some standout performers from other sides. Make sure to tweak it according to your preferences and budget constraints.

Good luck to all FPL managers in gameweek 24! Let’s make the most of this double gameweek and climb up the rankings.

  • Fantasy Premier League: Double Gameweek 25 announced – Who will play twice? What chip should I use?

We have had several fixture announcements today, which confirmed there will be back-to-back double gameweeks in Fantasy Premier League.

After Gameweek 24, which gets underway tomorrow (deadline 11am GMT; 6am ET) and sees two clubs, Liverpool and Everton, playing twice, we’re now also set to have a double in Gameweek 25. Six clubs can be affected in that one and which matches are rearranged for that gameweek depends on the results of the Carabao Cup semi-final second legs next week.

For plenty of FPL managers, this will totally change their chip strategies.

Here, we will fill you in with everything you need to know — so strap in.

    The permutations explained

    • If Arsenal progress to the Carabao Cup final by beating Newcastle United, then Arsenal and Chelsea will double in Gameweek 25 and blank in Gameweek 29.
    • If Tottenham Hotspur progress to the Carabao Cup final by beating Liverpool, then Spurs and Fulham will double in Gameweek 25. This means they will also blank in Gameweek 29.
    • If Liverpool progress to the Carabao Cup final by beating Spurs, Liverpool and Aston Villa will double in Gameweek 25, and also blank in Gameweek 29.

So it’s all eyes on those Carabao Cup semi-final second legs, then.

Arsenal, who are 2-0 down after the first leg, go to Newcastle on Wednesday, February 5, while Liverpool host Tottenham the following day with Spurs leading 1-0 on aggregate.

Arsenal have announced their home fixture against Chelsea currently scheduled for Sunday, March 16 — the same day as the Carabao Cup final — will be moved to Tuesday, February 18 if they make it to Wembley, handing them a double gameweek in Gameweek 25.

The same applies for Liverpool and Tottenham, whose games against Villa and Fulham have been pencilled in for March 15 and 16 respectively, but will move to Wednesday, February 19 if either club reach the Carabao Cup final.

Arsenal could now play twice in Gameweek 25 – but only if they overcome Newcastle in the Carabao Cup (Michael Regan/Getty Images)

There hasn’t been any announcement of a provisionally rescheduled fixture from Newcastle yet, so we have to assume that if they reach the Carabao Cup final there will be no double for them in Gameweek 25. Eddie Howe’s side not being in Europe means they have more midweek slots to play with, so their postponed fixtures will be easier to rearrange down the line.

At the moment, Liverpool and Newcastle are the strong favourites to get to the Carabao Cup final, which means the likely doubling teams in Gameweek 25 are Liverpool and Villa. But we will know for sure before the Gameweek 25 deadline anyway, so there’s no need to take any blind risks with your transfers.

    Possible Double Gameweek 25 Fixtures

    Team Fixtures

    Arsenal

    Leicester (A) and Chelsea (H)

    Aston Villa

    Ipswich (H) and Liverpool (H)

    Chelsea

    Brighton (A) and Arsenal (A)

    Fulham

Nottingham Forest (H) and Tottenham Hotspur (H)

    Liverpool

Wolves (H) and Aston Villa (A)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester United (H) and Fulham (A)

Why the assistant manager chip is now pivotal

If you were planning on playing your triple captain chip in Gameweek 24, I would recommend changing your plans. Don’t worry if you have already activated the chip as you can still cancel it.

The assistant manager chip is the one to play now, since we have guaranteed back-to-back double gameweeks and it’s not often we get that.

Be wary that if you activate your assistant manager, then not only can it not be cancelled but the manager you originally pick cannot be changed without using one of your free transfers. Therefore, be sure who you want to play it on before you activate it.

You will also have to make sure you have the money in the bank to buy your preferred manager, so you might actually need to free up funds by transferring out a player. Don’t be afraid to take hits if needed. These are going to be inevitable for most FPL managers, given the short notice.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

FPL: Fantasy Premier League: How to make the most of the assistant manager chip

I think the best route, in isolation, is going for Arne Slot of Liverpool or Everton’s David Moyes as your manager for Gameweek 24.

Slot is the safe pick and could also have another double in Gameweek 25, so you might not need to transfer him out for another manager. Moyes is the upside pick as he has the potential bonus points on offer as he faces Liverpool at home.

In Gameweek 25, if Liverpool beat Spurs to get to the cup final, another option is to make a change and go for Unai Emery, as Villa will then double against Ipswich (H) and Liverpool (H). I like this as it has one ‘banker game’ against Ipswich and then the potential for bonus points against Slot’s men.

Villa’s Emery might be worth a punt with the assistant manager chip – but only if Liverpool make it to Wembley (Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)

If Spurs get to the final, then you can move to their Ange Postecoglou or Fulham’s Marco Silva in Gameweek 25.

At the moment, Fulham are five places ahead of Spurs, so their game against them counts for the table bonus, but this could change in the next gameweek. Manchester United are currently three places above Tottenham, so you won’t get a table bonus for the latter’s second game.

You can also look to move to Silva in Gameweek 25. Fulham play Nottingham Forest and Spurs at home. They will qualify for the table bonus against Forest and should be favourites to beat Tottenham.

I wouldn’t worry about Gameweek 25 too much right now as we need to wait on the results of those Carabao Cup semis, but it’s handy to have a provisional plan in mind.

    Don’t forget about the players

Keep in mind that you will also need to use transfers on players from the doubling teams and, as I said before, points hits are going to be inevitable.

A lot of us would have been stocked up on Liverpool or Everton assets, but we won’t know who is doubling in Gameweek 25 until the Carabao Cup final is set next week.

Some of us might get lucky if you already have players from the teams who do end up doubling in 25. But the majority of us will only have a one gameweek notice period. Therefore, those FPL managers who have the most transfers saved up will benefit the most.

You only need to worry about the next gameweek at the moment, as we don’t have the full picture for Gameweek 25 yet.

However, when making your transfers, be wary of taking out players from clubs who could be set to play twice then.

The Fantasy Premier League has announced a Double Gameweek 25, meaning some teams will play twice during this round of fixtures. This presents a great opportunity for FPL managers to maximize their points by selecting players who have two chances to score big.

As of now, the teams with confirmed Double Gameweek 25 fixtures are Manchester City, Manchester United, Everton, Burnley, and Aston Villa. This means that players from these teams could be valuable picks for this gameweek.

When deciding which chip to use for Double Gameweek 25, managers have a few options. The Bench Boost chip could be a good choice as it allows you to earn points from all 15 of your players, including those on your bench. This could be particularly beneficial if you have a strong bench with players from teams with double fixtures.

Alternatively, the Triple Captain chip could also be a good option if you have a standout player who you believe will have a standout performance in one of their two fixtures.

Overall, Double Gameweek 25 presents a great opportunity for FPL managers to earn big points. Make sure to carefully consider your chip strategy and player selections to make the most of this exciting round of fixtures.

  • FPL Double Gameweek 25 confirmed

Following Friday’s provisional fixture announcement, there is a confirmed Double Gameweek 25 (DGW25) in Fantasy Premier League.

Should Liverpool overcome a 1-0 deficit in their EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur, both the Reds and Aston Villa will have a DGW25.

Consequently, both sides will be without a fixture in Gameweek 29, making it a Blank Gameweek 29 (BGW29).

Liverpool’s DGW25 would consist of a home match against Wolves and a trip to Villa, with Unai Emery’s side hosting Ipswich in their other DGW25 fixture.

But if Spurs make it through to the EFL Cup final, both they and Fulham would INSTEAD have a DGW25 and a BGW29, and Liverpool and Villa would NOT have a DGW25.

Spurs’ Double would see them face Manchester United at home and travel to Fulham, with Marco Silva’s men welcoming Nottingham Forest in their other DGW25 fixture.

In the other EFL Cup semi-final, Arsenal currently trail Newcastle United 2-0 after the first leg. Should they turn around the tie and make it through to the final, the Gunners and Chelsea would ALSO have a DGW25 and a Blank Gameweek 29.

Arsenal’s DGW25 would consist of a trip to Leicester City and a home fixture to Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca’s side visiting Brighton & Hove Albion in their other DGW25 fixture.

But if Newcastle progress to the final, they will have a BGW29, while Arsenal and Chelsea will NOT have a DGW25.

    Clubs’ potential DGW25 fixtures
    Club Matches
    Arsenal LEI (A), CHE (H)
Aston Villa IPS (H), LIV (H)
    Chelsea BHA (A), ARS (A)
    Fulham NFO (H), TOT (H)
    Liverpool WOL (H), AVL (A)
    Spurs MUN (H), FUL (A)

The news could radically alter plans in FPL, especially chip strategies for the weeks ahead.

Use Assistant Manager chip on Slot?

There will be even more interest in the Assistant Manager chip following Friday’s announcement.

By activating the chip ahead of DGW24, Fantasy managers COULD now get up to FIVE fixtures over the next three Gameweeks if Liverpool make it through to the EFL Cup final.

FPL managers can change their nominated Assistant Manager with free transfers, even if the Reds fail to progress, meaning Spurs and Fulham have a DGW25 instead.

For example, you could select Arne Slot (£1.5m) or David Moyes (£0.5m) as your Assistant Manager for DGW24, switching to Marco Silva or Ange Postecoglou (both £1.1m) in DGW25 if Spurs make it through to the final.

Save Triple Captain chip for potential DGW25?

If FPL managers aren’t using their Assistant Manager chip over the next two Gameweeks, then DGW25 could present another opportunity to use the Triple Captain chip.

Should Liverpool make it through to the EFL Cup final, for instance, then Mohamed Salah (£13.7m) would face Wolves and Villa in DGW25.

The Egyptian hit double-digit scores against both clubs earlier in the reverse fixtures.

Fantasy managers will be eagerly awaiting the results of the EFL Cup semi-final second legs then, with Newcastle against Arsenal on Wednesday 5 February before Liverpool host Spurs a day later.

Exciting news for all Fantasy Premier League managers! Double Gameweek 25 has been officially confirmed by the Premier League. This means that several teams will have the opportunity to play two matches in one gameweek, giving FPL managers the chance to earn double the points.

Make sure to keep an eye on the fixture schedule and plan your transfers and captain picks accordingly for Double Gameweek 25. This is a great opportunity to climb up the FPL rankings and gain an advantage over your rivals.

Stay tuned for more updates and tips on how to navigate Double Gameweek 25 in Fantasy Premier League. Good luck, managers! #FPL #DoubleGameweek25
