  • Four things to watch for in Week 18 Saturday doubleheader

Four things to watch for in Week 18 Saturday doubleheader

    • WHERE: Acrisure Stadium (Pittsburgh)
    • WHEN: 8 p.m. ET | ABC, ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN+, NFL+

    1) Can Joe Burrow and the offense continue to succeed? It’s been nearly a month since Burrow faced the Steelers’ defense and so much has changed since they last met on Dec. 1. It was the most combined points scored in a game between the Bengals and Steelers all-time, per NFL Research. In the last eight games, Burrow is the only QB in NFL history to record 250-plus pass yards and 3-plus pass TDs. A part of that success must go to receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase leads the league in receptions (117), receiving yards (1,612) and receiving TDs (16). He’s on pace to snag the league’s first receiving triple crown since Cooper Kupp captured it in 2021. As for Higgins, his Week 17 performance against the Broncos was huge with Chase covered by Patrick Surtain II. In the crucial win, Higgins had 11 catches for 131 yards and three TDs. Pittsburgh will have its hands full with both receivers, who are the only teammate duo in the league with 10-plus receiving touchdowns in 2024. A big question for Cincy, however, will be the status of running back Chase Brown, who is expected to be a game-time decision after suffering an ankle injury in Week 17.

    2) Russell Wilson must get back on track before the playoffs. During Pittsburgh’s three-game losing streak, Wilson has thrown three touchdowns and two interceptions versus teams that will be playing in the postseason (Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs). Wilson, however, had success against the Bengals in their last matchup when the Steelers recorded a season-high 44 points and 520 total yards. Wilson will need to expose Cincy’s defense on deep passes, and he has the right receiver in George Pickens to do so. Pickens leads the NFL with 15 receptions for 515 receiving yards on deep passes, according to Next Gen Stats. Tight end Pat Freiermuth leads the Steelers with six receiving TDs. If Wilson wants to be heading into postseason in the right direction, look for Pickens and Freiermuth to be a key part of the passing game on Saturday.

    1. Playoff implications: With the regular season coming to a close, every game in Week 18 will have major playoff implications. In the Saturday doubleheader, keep an eye on which teams are fighting for a spot in the postseason and how they perform under pressure.
    2. Individual performances: Week 18 is a chance for players to make a final statement before the playoffs begin. Watch for standout performances from key players on both offense and defense, as they look to solidify their place as impact players in the postseason.
    3. Injury updates: As teams gear up for the playoffs, it’s crucial to monitor any injury updates that may impact a team’s chances of success. Keep an eye on any players who are listed as questionable or game-time decisions, as their availability could significantly impact the outcome of the games.
    4. Coaching decisions: In the final week of the regular season, coaches will be making key decisions about player rotations, game plans, and overall strategy. Watch for any bold or unexpected coaching decisions that could have a major impact on the outcome of the games in the Saturday doubleheader.

Starting 5: Thunder vs. Knicks, Hawks vs. Lakers in key NBA TV doubleheader

The Thunder lead the league in steals with 11.9 per game.

    Knicks vs. Thunder preview

Two of the NBA’s hottest teams collide as New York and Oklahoma City put their streaks on the line, in the first of two must-see matchups on NBA TV tonight.

In the NBA’s 79-year history, only three games have featured both teams entering with win streaks of nine or more. Tonight will mark the fourth, as the Knicks (9 straight wins) visit the  Thunder (13 straight wins) at 8 PM ET on NBA TV.

The Knicks are chasing their 10th straight win, a milestone they haven’t reached since 2013, while the Thunder aim to tie a franchise record set by the 1995-96 SuperSonics with 14 consecutive victories. The clash also highlights two of the stars that dominated in December, Karl-Anthony Towns and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the East and West Kia Players of the Month, respectively.

    By the Numbers

Towns led New York to a 12-2 record last month, averaging 23.2 points and a league-high 14.6 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander propelled OKC to a 12-1 record in December, leading the NBA in scoring with 33.3 points per game on 56.3% shooting and 2.5 steals.

The Knicks rank third in offensive rating (120.1). Before their streak, the Knicks ranked 17th in defensive rating (113.7); during their run, they’ve climbed to second (106.2).

The Thunder, on the other hand, lead the league in defensive rating (102.8) and steals (11.9 per game). Their offense has surged from 11th (113.7) to fifth (116.9) during their streak.

    Depth Check

Both teams showcase stellar lineup depth. The Knicks are the first team in NBA history to have four different players score 40+ points in a game before Jan. 1 (Towns, Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby).

The Thunder boast four of the top five players in defensive rating among those averaging 20+ minutes per game: Isaiah Hartenstein, Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Cason Wallace.

With elite stars and balanced rosters, the stakes are high in this rare showdown of streaking titans.

    Hawks vs. Lakers preview

Trae Young’s 12 assists per game is tops in the NBA.

LeBron James and Trae Young headline a rematch of one of the season’s best games.

In the nightcap of Friday’s NBA TV doubleheader (10:30 PM ET), the Atlanta Hawks visit the Los Angeles Lakers in a rematch of their Dec. 6 thriller, where Trae Young’s game-winning three secured a 134-132 overtime win over LeBron James and company.

In that game, Young posted an unprecedented stat line of 31 points, 20 dimes and five 3s, capped by the game-winning triple with 7.4 seconds left to earn a 134-132 Hawks dub.

On the other side, James posted 39 points, 10 boards, 11 dimes, three blocks, two steals and six 3s — another unprecedented stat line. Anthony Davis also stuffed the stat sheet as he and James became the first pair of teammates to each record 38+ pts, 10+ reb, 8+ ast and 2+ blk in the same game.

    Bouncing back

The win was Atlanta’s sixth straight but was followed by a 1-4 stretch. Since then, the Hawks have found their footing as they’ve won four of its last five games. Young is averaging 26.2 points and 10.8 assists over the stretch, and the Hawks’ bench leads the league with 53.6 points per game during that span.

For Los Angeles, the loss capped a 2-7 stretch. But since then, the Lakers have gone 7-3, with their stars leading the way. James averaged 27.0 points, 8.1 assists, and 6.1 rebounds, Davis added 23.0 points and 12.4 rebounds and Austin Reaves raised his scoring average to 21.3 points per game during that stretch.

Will Young deliver another historic performance, or can James and the Lakers get revenge?

The NBA season is heating up with some exciting matchups on the schedule tonight. Two key games to watch are the Thunder taking on the Knicks and the Hawks facing off against the Lakers in a thrilling doubleheader on NBA TV.

In the first game, the Thunder will look to continue their strong start to the season as they take on the struggling Knicks. With star players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way, the Thunder will be looking to secure a big win on the road.

Meanwhile, the Hawks will be facing a tough test as they go up against the defending champion Lakers. With Trae Young leading the charge, the Hawks will look to pull off an upset against LeBron James and company.

Both games promise to be action-packed and full of highlight-reel plays. Make sure to tune in to NBA TV to catch all the action as these four teams battle it out in what is sure to be an exciting doubleheader. Let’s see who will come out on top in these matchups between the Thunder and Knicks, and the Hawks and Lakers.

  • Netflix smashes records with NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day

Netflix smashes records with NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day

LeBron James and the NBA are going to have make room for the NFL on Christmas.

That shouldn’t be a problem. Both leagues were winners on Wednesday.

Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history while the NBA had its best holiday numbers in five years according to Nielsen.

The NFL and Nielsen said 65 million U.S. viewers tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two NFL games.

The Baltimore Ravens‘ 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million, and the Kansas City Chiefs‘ 29-10 win at the Pittsburgh Steelers averaged 24.1 million, according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday.

The NBA’s five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, according to the league and Nielsen.

“I love the NFL,” James jokingly said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.”

However, Wednesday’s ratings showed that there is room for both.

Even though the NBA had the sports calendar to itself on Dec. 25 for many years, the NFL has made Christmas one of its tentpole events during the regular season, joining Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving.

Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media, took James’ comments in jest while also being joyful about the first season of the league’s three-year partnership with Netflix.

“The numbers speak for themselves and LeBron can have his own view, and I’m sure more people will look at that because of this,” he said. “But, you know, we’re focused on the NFL and we’re thrilled with the results this year with the Christmas on Netflix and we’re excited to continue to build that over the next couple of years.”

Both NFL games surpassed the previous mark of 23 million for last season’s AFC wild-card game between the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs on Peacock.

Viewership for Ravens-Texans peaked with the Beyoncé Bowl. The nearly 13-minute halftime performance averaged over 27 million viewers.

The viewer figures include the audience on Netflix, mobile viewership on NFL+ and those who tuned in on CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and Houston.

Global ratings and final U.S. numbers are expected to be available on Tuesday.

The NFL’s Christmas numbers decreased from last season, but not at the rate that usually happens when programming goes from broadcast to streaming.

Last year’s three games averaged 28.68 million viewers. The early afternoon contest between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chiefs led the way, averaging 29.48 million on CBS.

Once global and Netflix’s first-party data is released, both Christmas games are expected to surpass 30 million.

The games were the second- and third-most popular live titles in Netflix history, surpassed only by the Nov. 14 fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. That bout averaged a worldwide audience of 60 million and peaked at 65 million concurrent streams, including 38 million concurrent streams in the United States.

There will be at least two NFL games on Christmas next year, but with the holiday falling on a Thursday it is more likely to be three, with two afternoon and one prime time. The NFL has had three Thanksgiving Day games since 2006.

One of the biggest wins for Netflix on Wednesday: fewer streaming complaints it received. It seems the only gripe from most was that the stream did not immediately go to live action if someone tuned in after the game started.

Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, said in statement about the Chistmas broadcasts that the streaming service is thankful for the partnership with the NFL, the on-air talent, and “let’s please not forget the electrifying Beyoncé and the brilliant Mariah Carey.”

Beyoncé’s performance was trending number one worldwide socially on X, formerly known as Twitter. The hashtag #NFLonNetflix also trended around the world, reaching a peak of second in Australia, third in the United Kingdom and Germany, fifth in Brazil and France, and sixth in the U.S.

The NBA felt it had a banner day, announcing Thursday that all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama’s holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases.

The NBA’s lineup saw an 84% rise over 2023. One reason for the increase is that all five games were on ABC, compared to two last year.

The Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said.

Those numbers represent he most-watched NBA regular season game in five years.

Wednesday’s numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record.

For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting.

“Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.”

Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75.

Under the 11-year agreement, ESPN and ABC will continue air the Christmas Day games.

Netflix made history on Christmas Day by streaming two NFL games live for the first time ever, smashing viewership records in the process.

The first game featured a thrilling matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings, which drew in millions of viewers from around the world. The second game saw the Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the Chicago Bears, delivering even higher ratings.

Fans were thrilled to be able to watch their favorite teams play on Netflix, with many praising the streaming platform for providing a seamless viewing experience. The games were also accompanied by exclusive behind-the-scenes content and commentary, adding an extra layer of excitement for viewers.

With this groundbreaking move, Netflix has solidified its position as a major player in the world of sports streaming. The success of the NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day has set a new benchmark for future live sports events on the platform, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what’s next.
