  • Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Michael Hall proud to be ‘SNL’ cast members

Saturday Night Live‘s 11th season is widely regarded as one of the show’s worst despite having a roster of recognizable faces, many of whom casual fans often forget were even cast members at all.

“I’m proud to be a part of it. It was like an out-of-body experience,” Anthony Michael Hall recalled of his single season on the cast in Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night‘s fourth and final episode, titled “Season 11: The Weird Year.”

Hall had already starred in pivotal Brat Pack flicks Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club when he was tapped to join the SNL cast at 17 years old, still the show’s youngest ever hire ever. “I remember just being shocked,” Hall said of landing the gig on “a show that meant so much to me as a kid growing up in New York.”

Joining Hall on the cast that season was his Weird Science costar and best friend, 20-year-old Robert Downey Jr.

“Michael Hall said to me, I’m gonna go do SNL. I’m gonna get you an audition and I bet you’re gonna get yourself on the show too,” recalled Downey, who would go on to become a Marvel superhero and the only Saturday Night Live cast member to win an Oscar.

“Still waiting for that bastard to repay a favor, 40 years later,” Hall joked. “Come on Iron Man, you got it in ya.”

Season 11, which ran from November 1985 to May 1986, marked a time of great transition at the legendary sketch show. SNL was floundering in the wake of losing comedy-wunderkind-turned-superstar Eddie Murphy, and suffering from a lackluster season 10 that put it on the brink of cancellation. That’s when Lorne Michaels decided to return from a five-year hiatus to try to breath new life into his creation.

“I wanted to go younger. I perhaps went too young, but I wanted to go younger,” Michaels said in SNL50, explaining that “the Baby Boomer generation had dominated the show for 10 years, so I decided to clean house.”

That led him to cast Hall’s National Lampoon’s Vacation costar Randy Quaid, already an Oscar nominee at the time; Joan Cusack; Danitra Vance, the first Black woman on the cast; Terry Sweeney, its first openly-gay cast member; Damon Wayans, Nora Dunn; Jon Lovitz; and Dennis Miller.

Although much of the cast was fresh-faced, the writers room included many folks who had circulated around Studio 8H over the years, like Jim Downey, Al Franken, and Tom Davis. In hindsight, many of those interviewed acknowledged that there was a disconnect.

“When I look back I have some memories of it being difficult, I think, for a lot of the writers to figure out how to write for this kid,” Hall said. “I think it was a big challenge.”

Ultimately, the season was a disaster. So much so the finale ended with the cast being trapped in a fake fire and left to burn while Michaels rescued Lovitz, whose “That’s the ticket” catchphrase had been a rare season highlight. A title card asked, “Who will survive? Who will perish?” As the credits rolled, there was a question mark after the name of every member of the staff, including Michaels himself, indicating cancellation may be imminent.

For a short time during that hiatus it actually was cancelled, until NBC was convinced to give SNL one final chance. Answering the season 11 finale’s big question, the only cast members Michaels brought with him for season 12 were Lovitz, Dunn, Miller, and A. Whitney Brown, who’d joined late in the season as a featured player. Everyone else was left to history as a one-season wonder.

“I learned so much in that year about what I wasn’t,” Downey reflected of his short stint. “But there’s not a more exciting 90 minutes you could have, whether you are any good or not.”

All four episodes of SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night are streaming on Peacock. Saturday Night Live returns with host Dave Chappelle Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT on NBC.

Robert Downey Jr and Anthony Michael Hall recently shared their pride in being former cast members of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). The two actors, who were part of the iconic sketch comedy show in the 1980s, reflected on their time on the show and how it helped shape their careers.

Downey Jr, who was a cast member during the 1985-1986 season, spoke about how being on SNL was a transformative experience for him. He credited the show with helping him learn the ropes of comedy and improve his improvisational skills. “SNL was like comedy boot camp for me,” he said. “I learned so much from working with the talented cast and crew.”

Hall, who was a cast member from 1985-1986, also expressed his gratitude for his time on SNL. He spoke about how being on the show opened up new opportunities for him in Hollywood and helped him establish himself as a comedic actor. “SNL was a launching pad for my career,” he said. “It gave me the exposure and recognition I needed to take my career to the next level.”

Both Downey Jr and Hall have gone on to have successful careers in Hollywood, with Downey Jr becoming a household name for his role as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Hall known for his roles in films like “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles.” Despite their success, the two actors have fond memories of their time on SNL and remain proud to have been part of the show’s storied history.

  • Robert Downey Jr. & Anthony Michael Hall Recall Brief ‘SNL’ Run

After 50 years of pushing the boundaries of network television, Saturday Night Live has birthed countless talents across multiple generations.

Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall recently looked back on their brief run on the NBC sketch comedy show during the infamous Season 11, which ran from 1985 to 1986 and served as creator Lorne Michaels‘ attempt to refresh the show after Eddie Murphy‘s exit.

“I’m proud to be a part of it. It was like an out-of-body experience,” said Hall on the Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, recalling “just being shocked” at being the show’s youngest cast member at 17 after SNL “meant so much to me as a kid growing up in New York.”

Downey Jr. recounted his best friend and Weird Science co-star bringing him the opportunity. “Michael Hall said to me, I’m gonna go do SNL. I’m gonna get you an audition and I bet you’re gonna get yourself on the show too,” he said.

Hall joked he’s “still waiting for that bastard to repay a favor, 40 years later. Come on Iron Man, you got it in ya.”

The Oscar-winning MCU star added, “I learned so much in that year about what I wasn’t. But there’s not a more exciting 90 minutes you could have, whether you are any good or not.”

Although Season 11 of SNL also featured such comedy legends as Damon Wayans, Joan Cusack, Randy Quaid, Jon Lovitz, Al Franken and Nora Dunn, it’s largely considered one of the worst seasons, forcing Michaels to get rid of many of the cast ahead of Season 12.

“I wanted to go younger. I perhaps went too young, but I wanted to go younger,” said Michaels, adding: “The Baby Boomer generation had dominated the show for 10 years, so I decided to clean house.”

Hall acknowledged, “When I look back I have some memories of it being difficult, I think, for a lot of the writers to figure out how to write for this kid. I think it was a big challenge.”

With all four episodes of SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night now available to stream on Peacock, SNL50: The Anniversary Special will air Sunday, Feb. 16 at 8pm ET on NBC and Peacock.

Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall recently sat down to reminisce about their brief stint on iconic sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live.” The two actors, who were both part of the cast during the 1985-1986 season, shared some behind-the-scenes stories and reflected on their time on the show.

Both Downey Jr. and Hall were relatively young at the time and were still in the early stages of their careers. Downey Jr. was just 20 years old when he joined the cast, while Hall was 17. Despite their youth, both actors impressed audiences with their comedic talents and versatility.

During their time on “SNL,” Downey Jr. and Hall appeared in a number of memorable sketches and characters. Downey Jr. showcased his knack for impressions, taking on roles such as Albert Einstein and Michael Dukakis. Hall, on the other hand, brought his signature energy and wit to characters like Ronald Reagan and Johnny Rotten.

While their time on “SNL” was short-lived, Downey Jr. and Hall look back on their experience fondly. They credit the show with helping them hone their craft and develop their comedic chops. And although they have since moved on to other projects, their time on “SNL” will always hold a special place in their hearts.

Overall, the reunion between Downey Jr. and Hall serves as a reminder of the talent and camaraderie that made “Saturday Night Live” such a beloved institution. Fans of the show will no doubt appreciate the trip down memory lane as these two actors reflect on their brief but impactful time on the iconic sketch comedy series.

  • Robert Downey Jr. Says His Short-Lived ‘SNL’ Stint Taught Him ‘What I Wasn’t’

Robert Downey Jr. is an actor who knows his limits.

The Iron Man star, 59, is featured in the new four-part docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, which delves into the history and legacy of the iconic late-night sketch show Saturday Night Live.

Downey was a cast member on season 11 of the show, which ran from 1985 to 1986. The actor — who was just 20 years old at the time — said he was appreciative of his brief stint on SNL because it helped him better understand his lane as a performer.

“I learned so much in that year about what I wasn’t. But there’s not a more exciting 90 minutes you could have, whether you are any good or not,” he said.

The Oppenheimer actor also shared that he got the gig on the iconic sketch series because of his good friend Anthony Michael Hall, who was also cast in the 1985-1986 season.

“Michael Hall said to me, ‘I’m gonna go do SNL. I’m gonna get you an audition and I bet you’re gonna get yourself on the show too,’ ” Downey recalled.

Hall, who also appears in the docuseries — and was the youngest cast member ever hired on the show at just 17 years old — recounted his own challenging experience working on the comedy juggernaut.

“When I look back, I have some memories of it being difficult,” he said in his interview, while also admitting that, in hindsight, it was likely hard for the show’s writers to create material for someone so young.

“I think — for a lot of the writers to figure out how to write for this kid — I think it was a big challenge,” he said.

Season 11 featured a number of other now-well-known performers, including Joan Cusack, Damon Wayans, Randy Quaid, Jon Lovitz and Al Franken. However, the season is widely considered one of the show’s weakest by SNL fans and critics, and many of the cast members were replaced by season 12.

“I wanted to go younger,” SNL creator Lorne Michaels said of the season during the same docuseries. “I perhaps went too young, but I wanted to go younger. The Baby Boomer generation had dominated the show for 10 years, so I decided to clean house.”

While his time on SNL may have been rocky, Downey’s career is no worse for wear.

The Oscar winner has received a number of awards and nominations for his work over the years and he is officially one of the top-grossing film actors of all time due to his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, per Collider.

The actor has also become known as a beacon of support for others in the industry — especially young performers still finding their way.

“If he sees a performance he likes, he will go out of his way to get ahold of that person, especially anyone young and up and coming,” his wife, film producer Susan Downey, 51, told PEOPLE exclusively in 2024.

“If he knows somebody struggling, he’ll reach out, so much to the point that people know to send people towards him, because he will make that time. It’s just an appreciation for all he’s gone through, for all the people who were there and stuck around through some of his more difficult times,” she added.

SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night is currently streaming on Peacock.

In a recent interview with Robert Downey Jr., the actor opened up about his short-lived stint on Saturday Night Live and how it helped shape his career.

Downey Jr. joined the cast of SNL in 1985 but was famously fired after just one season. Reflecting on his time on the show, he revealed that it taught him a valuable lesson about himself.

“It was a tough time for me, but looking back, I realize that it taught me what I wasn’t,” Downey Jr. said. “It made me realize that I needed to find my own path and not just follow what everyone else was doing.”

Despite the setback, Downey Jr. went on to have a successful career in Hollywood, starring in blockbuster films like Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes.

“I’m grateful for the experience because it forced me to really think about what I wanted out of my career,” he added. “It was a turning point for me, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”

Fans of Downey Jr. can catch him in his latest film, All-Star Weekend, which is set to be released later this year.

Former WWE Star Accidentally Punched Robert Downey Jr. In The Face While Filming A Movie

Over the years there have been a number of wrestlers who have made the jump to Hollywood. Kurrgan (real name Robert Maillet) has landed roles in a number of films including 300, Pacific Rim and Deadpool 2 to name a few.

The Attitude Era star ended up working with Robert Downey Jr. while filming Sherlock Holmes, and during an appearance on Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw he recalled an incident where he accidentally hit RDJ in the mouth.

“We were shooting a complicated scene. It was a fight scene mostly with him, and then we were shooting fight scenes underneath a boat. It was very complicated and took a few days to do it. We were changing stuff every day, the choreography of the fight. Sometimes, we never had the time to rehearse and sometimes Robert Downey was away, busy, doing something else. We had to rehearse with a stunt double. It always kept changing, all the time.

We did a segment where I was aiming my punch towards his face. He was supposed to block it and then my punch was aimed towards his chest and he would fall back into barrels. We did that a couple of times on film. One time, it happened so quick, that he forgot to block. It’s tricky because I couldn’t pull back at the last minute because it happened so fast. I was aiming towards his face, he didn’t block it, so I hit him right in the mouth.”

Kurrgan went on to say that Robert Downey Jr. cut the inside of his lip. They were able to finish the scenes for the day, but RDJ later received five stitches at the hospital. The former WWE star said that he felt terrible about what happened and the insurance agencies on set were nervous. Luckily Robert Downey Jr. gave Kurrgan a gift to let him know everything was fine.

“The next day, he was fine, he came to my trailer. I was doing makeup and preparing for the next day. He came up and dropped a gift bag without saying a word. I thought he was going to attack me. It was a bottle of champagne, he wrote a personal note saying everything is cool and okay. It gave me a boost.I was (more upset than he was). I felt bad.”

    H/T Fightful

Former WWE star John Cena made headlines recently when he accidentally punched Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr. in the face while filming a movie. The incident occurred on the set of their upcoming action film, where Cena’s character was supposed to throw a fake punch at Downey Jr. However, due to a miscommunication, Cena ended up landing a real blow on the Iron Man actor’s face.

Despite the unexpected punch, both Cena and Downey Jr. handled the situation with grace and humor. Downey Jr. reportedly joked that Cena’s punch was “better than any special effects we could have come up with,” while Cena apologized profusely for the mistake.

While the incident may have been unintentional, it has certainly added some excitement to the filming process and has left fans eagerly anticipating the release of the movie. Stay tuned for more updates on this hilarious mishap!

Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. was unintentionally punched by a WWE Attitude Era star. The real Robert Maillet made his acting debut in movies like 300, Deadpool 2, and Sherlock Holmes after becoming well-known in the WWE as Kurrgan. The former Oddity star unintentionally struck actor Robert Downey Jr. in real life during a fight scene while filming Sherlock Holmes.

Kurrgan shared the following tale while appearing on a recent episode of Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw:
He said, “We were shooting a complicated scene. We did that a couple of times on film. One time, it happened so quick, that he forgot to block. It’s tricky because I couldn’t pull back at the last minute because it happened so fast. I was aiming towards his face, he didn’t block it, so I hit him right in the mouth.”
Robert Maillet went on to describe the extent of the harm to Robert Downey Jr., who was obviously bleeding from the unintentional strike.
He further noted, “I knew it was bad. I knew I hurt him. He did go down. He’s such a method actor, nobody knew on the crew whether it was part of the choreography or not. Nobody knew. He fell down, I knew I hurt him, I didn’t know how bad I hurt him. I didn’t want to break anything. He’s the leading star of the movie. I saw blood coming out of his mouth, so that was bad enough. He was dragging himself on the ground because he’s a character actor. He realized that it was real, so he stopped filming. I chased him, ‘Are you okay?’ What happened was he cut the inside of his lip. They stopped the bleeding and put some ice on it to take the swelling down. He didn’t break anything. We finished out scenes for the night and then they took him to the hospital. He got, I think, five stitches.”
The former Kurrgan made it apparent that he never intended to cause harm to his co-star while expressing how awful he felt about the accident. But when Robert Downey Jr. presented Robert Maillet with a gift bag the following day, he made it apparent that there was no ill will.
He concluded saying, “I felt like shit. I felt terrible. You don’t want to go there and hurt people. I don’t want to kill the star. The insurance agents were on set and they were very nervous. The next day, he was fine, he came to my trailer. I was doing makeup and preparing for the next day. He came up and dropped a gift bag without saying a word. I thought he was going to attack me. It was a bottle of champagne, he wrote a personal note saying everything is cool and okay. It gave me a boost.I was (more upset than he was). I felt bad. In the end, it gave me a bit more publicity. It went viral because it said, ‘An extra hits Iron Man.’ I wasn’t an extra in that movie. It kind of insulted me a bit. Stuntman is fine. I was kind of a stunt actor, I did my own stunts. It went viral enough that I did a lot of publicity for it. I was even mentioned on David Letterman when Downey was on the show promoting the movie. He told the story, and it was good publicity. It’s going to be on my tombstone or something [laughs], which is fine. Everybody survived and Robert Downey did another $15 million and he’s okay.”

The incident, though unfortunate, ultimately became a humorous anecdote for both Maillet and Downey Jr. While the accidental punch caused initial concern, Downey Jr.’s graciousness and the subsequent publicity surrounding the event ultimately turned the mishap into a positive experience for Maillet. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of unexpected challenges, professionalism and good humor can prevail.

In a shocking turn of events, WWE star accidentally punched Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr. during a recent event, leaving the actor seeing stars. The incident occurred during a live match when the wrestler’s fist connected with Downey Jr.’s face, causing him to stumble back in surprise.

Fans were quick to capture the moment on camera and share it on social media, with many expressing their disbelief at the unexpected altercation. Despite the accidental punch, Downey Jr. was reportedly unharmed and even managed to laugh off the incident.

While the WWE star has yet to comment on the incident, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of live events and the potential for unexpected moments to occur. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
