  • USMNT Player Tracker: Weah downs Milan, Richards’ consistency and Adams’ ‘controlled chaos’

Christian Pulisic and muscle fatigue decoded, Chris Richards’ consistency and Tyler Adams’ controlled chaos all play a part in this week’s USMNT tracker.

Throughout the season, we will be bringing you updates on the USMNT players plying their trade in various leagues around Europe.

With a home-soil World Cup on the horizon, we’re keeping tabs on how they perform every weekend.

    Issue of the weekend

The Italian top flight’s most American-influenced rivalry had to do without any Christian Pulisic magic on Friday.

As AC Milan headed to Turin to take on Juventus, the USMNT star was only watching from the stands after being withdrawn during his club’s previous game.

Instead, his compatriot Tim Weah stole the headlines for the hosts as he emerged from the bench to score the second goal of Juventus’s 2-0 win.

Weston McKennie, who started the game at right-back, was also celebrating by the end, while for the Rossoneri, Yunus Musah, another who started, played well but to no avail as Milan’s Champions League qualification hopes were dented.

It might have been different if Milan, whose 0.97xG (expected goals) overall was inferior to the winners’ 1.08, had been able to call on one of their strongest attacking talents. But Pulisic was not even on the bench after being taken off as a precaution in that win over Como on January 14.

The 26-year-old had appeared to sustain an injury to his left calf but subsequent scans ruled out a muscle tear and his manager Sergio Conceicao explained why he was not willing to risk him at the Allianz Stadium.

“Pulisic is out,” Conceicao said. “I don’t feel like bluffing. He still feels some discomfort and we don’t want to risk it.

“It’s nothing serious but if he plays for about 20 minutes, he risks making the situation worse and I don’t want that.”

Tim Weah scores in Juventus’s 2-0 win over AC Milan (Isabella Bonotto/AFP via Getty Images)

It is not the first time Milan have referred to muscle fatigue when explaining a Pulisic absence. In November 2023, he missed a league game against Udinese before featuring in a Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Pulisic was taken off late in that victory at San Siro and missed the following Serie A fixture against Lecce as well as his country’s CONCACAF Nations League semi-final win over Trinidad and Tobago with what was also described as muscle fatigue.

But what is the condition? Anyone who has ever trained in the gym and felt soreness — commonly known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) — will have a rough idea.

For a professional footballer, heavy DOMs and muscle fatigue can feel the same, and crucially it can elevate their chance of picking up a more serious problem if not rested. Players who have a history of being vulnerable to injury if feeling muscle fatigue are often, in that case, rested.

Conceicao will now hope that his decision to rest Pulisic against Juventus will allow the former Chelsea attacker to play a part in Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Girona and Sunday’s Serie A game against Parma.

    Player of the weekend

Chris Richards is settling into solid form for Crystal Palace and was impressive again as they beat West Ham 2-0 on Saturday.

The 24-year-old made five clearances and eight defensive actions as Palace traveled to the London Stadium and kept a clean sheet against a team now managed by Graham Potter.

Richards has started his team’s last four Premier League games, consisting of three wins and a 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Oliver Glasner’s men are now 12th in the table.

    Quote of the weekend

“We believe in the system that we’re playing in right now and the culture of the team has grown a lot. We’ve added so many great players.

“The system that we play, you have to be a certain type of player to fit into the style we have and have the mentality to press and run, and compete. Everyone in our squad can do that.

“It’s a controlled chaos. We want to make the game as chaotic as possible but controlled for us.

“We try and overwhelm the opponent as much as possible but for us, it feels normal. We’re running all over the place. We know I have the freedom to step (forward), I know centre-backs are coming with me. The No 10 has freedom to step, they know I’m coming with them.

“It’s this trust but you have to have the nuance to it as well. You can’t go flying into tackles all over the pitch. You have to be smart because we know we can leave ourselves vulnerable at times.”

Tyler Adams gives an eloquent insight into the winning style that saw Bournemouth beat Newcastle 4-1 on Saturday and move level on points with Chelsea (before the latter’s Monday game against Wolves).

Bournemouth’s victory came despite an extensive injury list, with Evanilson, Marcos Senesi, Julian Araujo, Marcus Tavernier, Alex Scott, Luis Sinisterra, Adam Smith, Enes Unal and James Hill all sidelined.

Adams, who has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season after returning from a lengthy injury lay-off of his own, was full of praise for his side’s mentality in the face of adversity.

How did other U.S. players get on?

    Name: Antonee Robinson
    Club: Fulham
    Position: Left-back
    Appearances: 22
    Goals: 0

The USMNT defender was typically imperious down Fulham’s left as Marco Silva’s men enjoyed a 2-0 win over struggling Leicester City. Defensively, he was robust too with no opponent dribbling past him as he recorded 10 defensive actions and 10 ball recoveries.

    Name: Johnny Cardoso
    Club: Real Betis
    Position: Midfield
    Appearances: 23
    Goals: 1

The USMNT man had another sub-par outing. After his Real Betis side’s impressive seven-game unbeaten run came to an end at Real Valladolid last Saturday, they lost 5-1 to Barcelona and then, on Saturday, there was a 3-1 loss at home to Deportivo Alaves. He was booked and won just one of his seven ground duels.

    Name: James Sands
    Club: St. Pauli
    Position: Midfielder
    Appearances: 3

On his first Bundesliga start, the American looked composed and comfortable as St. Pauli won 2-0 at Heidenheim. He played 71 minutes, picked up a booking and created a chance for his team.

    Name: Paxten Aaronson
    Club: Utrecht
    Position: Midfield
    Appearances: 22
    Goals: 6

The 21-year-old has been a hit for a side that has risen to third in Eredivisie. He did well in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar, making five ball recoveries in midfield.

    Name: Erik Palmer-Brown
    Club: Panathinaikos
    Position: Centre-back
    Appearances: 3
    Goals: 0

After a season starved of game time in the Greek Super League, the 27-year-old started in defence for Sunday’s 1-0 home win over AEK Athens. He did not get on the ball much — Palmer-Brown had the fewest touches (28) of any outfield player to play 90 minutes — but made nine defensive actions and eight clearances as his team kept a clean sheet.

    What’s coming up?

    (All times in Eastern Time)

It’s Champions League time, so all eyes will be on the San Siro on Wednesday to see whether Pulisic recovers to play his part against Girona (3pm, CBSSN/Paramount +). At the same time, Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers’ Celtic play Swiss outfit Young Boys (Paramount +).

The day before (Tuesday), Ricardo Pepi will hope for more minutes as PSV face Red Star Belgrade (3pm, Paramount +) although Malik Tillman has suffered an ankle injury which may yet mean an extended spell on the sidelines.

On Thursday, Tanner Tessmann’s Lyon play Fenerbahce in the Europa League (12:45pm, Paramount +).

Then on Saturday, Bournemouth’s ‘controlled chaos’ will be unleashed again as Tyler Adams and Co face the stiff test of Nottingham Forest in the Premier League (10am, Peacock Premium).

The 21-year-old winger showcased his speed and skill, reminding fans of his potential to become a future star for the USMNT.

Meanwhile, Chris Richards continued to impress for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. The 21-year-old defender has been a consistent presence in the starting lineup, showcasing his defensive prowess and composure on the ball. Richards’ performances have not gone unnoticed, with many fans and pundits praising his development and potential to become a key player for the USMNT.

Lastly, Tyler Adams has been a standout performer for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old midfielder has been lauded for his energy, work rate, and ability to disrupt opposition attacks. Adams’ style of play has been described as ‘controlled chaos’, as he constantly puts pressure on the opposition and creates opportunities for his team.

  • Louisville downs Syracuse, 72-62, to win seventh straight

Louisville closed a two-game homestand with a 72-62 win over Syracuse to extend its win streak to seven games.

The Cardinals improved to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in ACC play, while the Orange drop to 7-10, 1-5.

Tajianna Roberts, a three-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree, paced UofL with a 13-point outing. Ja’Leah Williams finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven assists.

Jayda Curry scored 12 points, with Nyla Harris and Olivia Cochran both going for 10 points. Elif Istanbulluoglu came off the bench to score nine points.

The Cardinals struggled from the field throughout the second quarter, connecting on just 26.3% during the frame. The visitors used UofL’s cool shooting, aided by five second quarter turnovers, to grab the lead briefly before the Cardinals used an 8-0 run to build a 33-30 halftime lead.

Louisville opened the second half by hitting 11 of 15 shots in the third quarter to take a 59-51 advantage into the fourth quarter.

After pushing its lead to a dozen early in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals again went cold from the field. UofL went over seven minutes without a field goal, missing eight straight attempts, but converting from the free throw line allowed the hosts to keep its scoring edge. A layup by Olivia Cochran with 51 seconds left ended the near eight-minute stretch without a bucket.

UofL head coach Jeff Walz, along with players Ja’Leah Williams and Jayda Curry discussed the win with the media.

Watch a replay of the post-game press conference in the videos below. Continue to scroll for game photos.

Louisville shot 46% for the game, including a 5-for-15 performance from beyond the arc. UofL won the rebound battle by 11.

Up next for the Cardinals is a Sunday trip to Virginia Tech. Tip is set for 4pm with the ACC Network providing the broadcast. The visit to Blacksburg, Va., will kick off a string of three straight road games.

In a thrilling matchup, Louisville emerged victorious over Syracuse with a final score of 72-62, extending their winning streak to seven games. The Cardinals showcased their dominance on both ends of the court, with stellar performances from key players leading them to another impressive victory. Louisville’s relentless defense and efficient offense proved to be too much for Syracuse to handle, as they struggled to keep up with the Cardinals’ relentless pace. With this win, Louisville continues to build momentum and solidify their position as a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball world. Congratulations to the Cardinals on their seventh straight win! #GoCards

  • Steelers 4 Downs: Excelling in regular-season finales at home quite common

Steelers 4 Downs: Excelling in regular-season finales at home quite common

    1. See you in the fall …

If it’s the final regular-season game of the season and it’s at the venue now called Acrisure Stadium, history tells us it’s time for a Pittsburgh Steelers victory.

The Steelers have never lost a season finale at what once was called Heinz Field. They’re 11-0 in regular-season finales at home since they fell Jan. 2, 2000 (the 1999 season finale) to the Tennessee Titans … at Three Rivers Stadium.

The Steelers are 22-5 all-time when their regular-season finale has been at home. That includes 13 of their past 15 and 8-0 under Mike Tomlin.

Discounting for venue, the Steelers are an NFL-best 14-3 since 2007 (when Tomlin was hired) in regular-season finales (home or away). They have won 18 of their past 22 final games of the season overall.

If there is any caveat to the Steelers’ stellar record when closing out a season at home, it’s that they have far too often done so against the lowly Cleveland Browns. Seven of the 11 regular-season finales at Acrisure have been against the Browns. The only time the Steelers finished a season at Acrisure against a team with a winning record was in 2014. The Cincinnati Bengals that season finished 10-5-1. The Bengals, who wrap up the regular season Saturday night in Pittsburgh, are 8-8.

    2. … But not all of you

Saturday could be the final regular-season game — and final appearance at Acrisure Stadium — for a number of Steelers players. Of the 47 expected to be in uniform against the Bengals, 18 are on expiring contracts, with 15 of those set for unrestricted free agency this spring. There are 20 free agents overall — 17 UFAs, one restricted free agent (Jaylen Warren) and two exclusive-rights free agents (Ryan McCollum and Jeremiah Moon).

Depending on what personnel package the Steelers open up in offense and defense (and if Donte Jackson is active despite a back injury), roughly 8-10 starters are soon-to-be free agents. And that doesn’t even count UFAs who are on season-ending injured reserve (offensive linemen James Daniels and Nate Herbig) or players whose contract for 2025 have a high enough salary and are likely to be cut (such as Preston Smith).

Those on the list of free agents range from the household names (Russell Wilson and Najee Harris) to dependable longtime starters (Dan Moore Jr.) to the little-known specialists (Tyler Matakevich), and from the well-paid (Mike Williams) to those making the minimum salary (MyCole Pruitt, Scotty Miller).

Some of the above will be Steelers in 2025. Others won’t be in black and gold again in a regular-season game in Pittsburgh.

    3. Not Canton-like

Ask Steelers players about their well-liked teammate Cordarrelle Patterson, a common refrain is “he’s a future Hall of Famer.” That might be true — Patterson holds the NFL record for most career kickoff-return touchdowns with nine.

But what Patterson has brought to the Steelers at 33 in his 12th pro season hasn’t been Hall of Fame worthy.

Signed with intent after the NFL modified its kickoff rules in an effort to encourage more returns, Patterson has mostly been a dud. His 21.8-yard average on returns ranks second-last among any player in the league who has returned as many kickoffs as him (11). Every player who has that many returns has at least one of more than 35 yards — Patterson’s season long. Petterson has accounted for half of the returned deep kickoffs by the Steelers this season — and in regards to average, he lags behind the other two who have done so (Warren, 24.3, and Aaron Shampklin, 25.3).

The Steelers as a team rank dead last in the league in average kick return yards (22.5).

    4. Chase-ing history

Ja’Marr Chase is on the cusp of becoming the fifth receiver since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger to lead the NFL in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Chase heads into the finale atop the league in all three with 117, 1,612 and 16, respectively.

With 68 receiving yards against the Steelers, Chase would surpass Hall of Famer Randy Moss (5,396) for the third-most over a player’s first four seasons in NFL history. With a big game (184 or more yards) he can pass Michael Thomas for No. 2 all-time through four seasons.

Only current Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson (5,899) is out of reach for Chase in that statistic.

Chris Adamski is a TribLive reporter who has covered primarily the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2014 following two seasons on the Penn State football beat. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long history of success in regular-season finales at home, with the team consistently performing well in these critical games. From thrilling victories to dominant performances, the Steelers have shown time and time again that they excel when it matters most.

One reason for the Steelers’ success in regular-season finales at home is their strong home-field advantage. Playing in front of their passionate fan base at Heinz Field, the Steelers feed off the energy and atmosphere to elevate their play. The crowd’s support can be a game-changer, helping the team to secure crucial victories and build momentum heading into the playoffs.

Another factor contributing to the Steelers’ success in regular-season finales at home is their depth and talent on both sides of the ball. With a roster filled with playmakers and proven veterans, the Steelers have the ability to make big plays when it matters most. Whether it’s a game-winning drive led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger or a key defensive stop by the likes of T.J. Watt or Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Steelers have the talent and experience to come through in the clutch.

Overall, the Steelers’ track record of excelling in regular-season finales at home is a testament to the team’s resilience, determination, and ability to rise to the occasion. As the Steelers continue to chase greatness and strive for championship success, their ability to perform well in these critical games will be a key factor in their journey to the top.

  • Josh Downs Week 17 Outlook for Fantasy Football (2024)

Josh Downs Week 17 Outlook for Fantasy Football (2024)

    Share:

    Link copied to clipboard!

1 day agoIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs is coming off of his third consecutive game with exactly three catches, although those nine catches came on 19 targets. Fellow wideout Michael Pittman Jr. seemed like Anthony Richardson‘s preferred option based on his 13 receptions over the last three games, but looking closer, Pittman Jr. had the same amount of targets as Downs over that stretch (19). While Downs’ aDOT of 7.12 yards contrasts with Pittman Jr.’s 11.26, they are basically the Colts’ 1A and 1B receivers for fantasy purposes this week. That is, if Anthony Richardson is under center for the Colts, but after missing practice all week with back and foot injuries, the second-year QB is at risk of missing Week 17’s matchup with the Giants. If that happens, Joe Flacco will slide in as QB, and the 39-year-old showed more rapport with Downs than Pittman Jr., with Downs logging a 36-338-1 line (five games) compared to Pittman Jr.’s 13-139-1 line (four games) with the veteran at the helm. Neither one makes for a great play this week, as both look like high-end Flex options with Richardson calling the plays, but Downs has WR3 upside if Flacco gets the start.Jarod Rupp – RotoBaller

With the fantasy football playoffs in full swing, many managers are looking for that extra edge to secure a championship. One player who could provide a boost in Week 17 is Josh Downs.

Downs, the dynamic wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, has been a consistent performer throughout the season. He has shown his ability to make big plays and rack up points in fantasy football. With the potential for a high-scoring matchup in Week 17, Downs could be poised for a big game.

In his Week 17 outlook, Downs faces off against a vulnerable secondary, giving him the opportunity to exploit mismatches and put up big numbers. With his speed, route-running ability, and knack for finding the end zone, Downs could be a difference-maker for fantasy managers looking to advance in the playoffs.

If you have Josh Downs on your fantasy team, make sure to slot him into your starting lineup for Week 17. With his upside and potential for a big game, he could be the difference-maker that leads you to fantasy glory. Keep an eye on Downs as he looks to finish the season strong and help your team win a championship.

  • What is Josh Downs’ DFS ceiling in Week 17 if Anthony Richardson sits?

Griffin Wong analyzes Indianapolis Colts WR Josh Downs’ DFS potential if quarterback Anthony Richardson sits in Week 17.

With sixteen weeks down, the AFC playoff picture has pretty much taken shape. Only the final two wild card spots remain up for grabs, with the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos both at 9-6 and the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Cincinnati Bengals at 7-8. But Denver has a couple of tough games in Cincinnati and Kansas City, priming the Colts — who have the tiebreaker over both of their 7-8 contemporaries and play the bottom-feeding New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars in the last two weeks — to pounce if the Broncos slip up.

As if Indianapolis wasn’t enough of a wrench in the wild card picture, the Colts might be without their starting quarterback, Anthony Richardson, against New York. Richardson, the third overall pick in the 2023 Draft, missed practice all week with back and foot soreness and is officially questionable for the game. While neither Richardson ($5,900) nor backup Joe Flacco ($4,900) figures to be a huge factor in DFS contests like NFL $2.25M Fantasy Football Millionaire [$1M to 1st], the starting quarterback might impact the DFS ceiling of wide receiver Josh Downs ($4,800).

Despite missing three games this season because of a variety of injuries, Downs has been arguably Indianapolis’ most reliable receiver. He has hauled in 59 catches for 687 yards and five scores, better stats than Michael Pittman Jr. ($4,700), who began the season the Colts’ nominal No. 1 receiver. Pro Football Focus grades him as the eighth-best receiver in football, with Pittman the third-best Colt at No. 52 overall.

Normally, an injury to the starting quarterback wouldn’t be good news for a team or its top receiver. But Downs has been unequivocally better with Flacco as his signal-caller, catching 37 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns in five games where Flacco took the majority of the snaps and only 22 catches for 338 yards and three scores in the seven games that Richardson has been the primary quarterback. Indianapolis went 2-3 in Flacco’s five games, and should be easily favored to beat the Giants, regardless of who lines up under center.

New York hasn’t been great at much this year, but it has excelled against opposing receivers. The Giants have been challenged less frequently through the air than all but five teams and have given up just 3,270 yards, the sixth-fewest in the NFL. They’ve also given up only 19 receiving touchdowns, tied for the eighth-fewest in the NFL. Overall, New York has allowed the eighth-fewest FPTS to opposing wideouts.

The Giants have an awful rush defense, so running back Jonathan Taylor ($7,900) is the obvious beneficiary of Sunday’s matchup. Still, Flacco’s strong connection with Downs should make him a strong DFS play if Richardson is ultimately ruled out.

With the uncertainty surrounding Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson’s availability for Week 17, many fantasy football players are wondering what kind of ceiling Josh Downs could have if Richardson is unable to play.

If Richardson sits, Downs could see an increase in targets and production as the primary receiving option for the Gators. With his speed and playmaking ability, Downs has the potential to put up big numbers against a vulnerable defense.

While Downs’ DFS ceiling is hard to predict without knowing Richardson’s status, it’s safe to say that he could be a high-upside play with the opportunity to have a breakout performance. Keep an eye on the injury reports leading up to game time to make an informed decision on whether to start Downs in your DFS lineup for Week 17.
