  • Thousands of protesters rally in downtown Los Angeles against Trump’s aggressive immigration policies

Thousands of protesters rallied in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday against President Trump’s crack down on immigration and his aggressive deportation policies.

Draped in Mexican and Salvadoran and flags, demonstrators gathered near City Hall shortly before noon, blocking traffic at Spring and Temple streets, amid honking horns and solidarity messages from passing motorists. Protesters blasted a mix of traditional and contemporary Mexican music from a loudspeaker, including “Por mi Mexico” by Lefty Sm & Santa Fe Klan.

By 1 p.m., the number of protesters ballooned to several thousand, with some carrying signs that said, “MAGA – Mexicans always get across,” “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you,” referring to the state’s agricultural workers, and, “I drink my horchata warm because f … I.C.E,” a reference to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Nailah Esparza, 18, said it was her first protest and that she learned about it roughly a week ago from TikTok videos. She held a sign in Spanish that read, “ No more I.C.E. raids, no more fear, we want justice and a better world.”

“I decided it was actually something that was very important, so we decided to show support, because of the youth,” said Esparza, who is Mexican American. “We’re very passionate about what we’re here for.”

Another protester, who identified himself only as Rey out of privacy concerns, brought a sign that read, “Trump eat caca. Beware the Nazis.” He said he protested Trump’s immigration policies during his first term as president.

“We thought we were done with his administration,” said Rey, who is Mexican American. “And now we have to do this again.”

The protest was mostly peaceful, but things appeared to ratchet up when the driver of a silver Mustang began doing donuts in the intersection. Soon after, police arrived on the scene as some protesters walked onto the nearby 101 Freeway, while hundreds more crowded overpasses, waving flags and holding signs.

Promising the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, President Trump, in his first days in office, declared a “national emergency” at the southern border, deploying troops there and releasing a dramatic series of executive orders and other policy changes intended to reshape the country’s immigration system.

Trump’s orders sharply limit legal pathways for entering the U.S., bolster enforcement efforts to seal off the U.S.-Mexico border, and promote aggressive sweeps to round up and deport people living in the U.S. illegally. Some of the orders have already been challenged in court, and advocates said others could be soon.

There are an estimated 11 million to 15 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., including more than 2 million in California.

That includes people who crossed the border illegally, people who overstayed their visas and people who have requested asylum. It does not include people who entered the country under various temporary humanitarian programs, or who have obtained Temporary Protected Status, which gives people the right to live and work in the U.S. temporarily because of disasters or strife in their home countries.

Times reporters Jessica Garrison and Rebecca Plevin contributed to this report.

On [date], thousands of protesters gathered in downtown Los Angeles to demonstrate against President Trump’s aggressive immigration policies. The crowd, made up of activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, marched through the streets carrying signs and chanting slogans in support of immigrants and refugees.

Many protesters voiced their opposition to the administration’s policies, which have included separating families at the border, implementing travel bans on majority-Muslim countries, and increasing deportations of undocumented immigrants. They called for humane and compassionate immigration reform that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals.

The rally, organized by [name of organization], drew a diverse crowd of people from all walks of life who came together to show solidarity with immigrant communities. Speakers at the event highlighted the contributions that immigrants make to society and called for an end to the demonization and scapegoating of immigrants.

As the sun set over downtown Los Angeles, the protesters remained united in their message of unity and justice for all. The rally served as a powerful reminder that the fight for immigrant rights is far from over, and that the voices of the people will continue to be heard until real change is achieved.

  • LAPD monitoring large protest in downtown Los Angeles – NBC Los Angeles

A rally opposing immigration crackdowns blocked the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Droves of protesters flocked to downtown Los Angeles in what police described as a “non-permitted demonstration.” LAPD said it was monitoring a peaceful protest that made its way to City Hall and then moved onto the freeway, according to Officer Lee.

The department said it’s unaware if the protest is in opposition to immigration crackdowns, but signs referencing the matter have been seen being held by protesters. It’s unclear if the large group obtained a permit for their rally.

As a result of the demonstration, Spring Street is closed from 1st Street to Temple Street. LAPD urged protesters who were blocking the 101 Freeway to move the demonstration to allow motorists to drive.

The LAPD is currently monitoring a large protest taking place in downtown Los Angeles, according to NBC Los Angeles. The protest, which appears to be peaceful at this time, is drawing a significant crowd and has caused some road closures in the area.

Law enforcement officials are on hand to ensure the safety of both protesters and bystanders, and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any potential disturbances. The LAPD has urged participants to exercise their right to protest peacefully and to avoid any acts of violence or destruction.

As the protest continues, NBC Los Angeles will provide updates on any developments and the response from law enforcement. Stay tuned for more information on this developing story.

  • Downtown Minneapolis’ Ameriprise Financial Center sells at 96% discount

Minnetonka-based Onward Investors purchased the 31-story Ameriprise Financial Center at a big discount, adding to its growing portfolio of downtown Minneapolis office buildings.

The firm paid $6.25 million in cash for the property at 707 S. Second Av., according to sources familiar with the deal. The building last sold in 2016 for $200 million.

According to a Thursday news release, Onward is exploring a variety of options for the property, including conversion for non-office uses.

“The purchase of the Ameriprise Financial Center is another demonstration of our desire to be an active participant in the recovery of downtown Minneapolis,” Jon Lanners, a partner at Onward, said in a statement. “We believe that now is a great time to be investing in the city’s future and look forward to engaging a multitude of stakeholders in the coming months as we reimagine this well-known asset in the Minneapolis skyline.”

With a $125 million fund fueled by private investors, Onward has been on the hunt for discount office buildings across the country, closing deals in Charlotte, N.C., and Richmond, Va., in recent months.

“We don’t think office is dead forever,” Lanners said in an interview. “I mean frankly, we’re already seeing a pretty substantial uptick in demand across our portfolio from a leasing perspective. I feel like it’s a great time to be investing in high-quality assets that we believe will stand the test of time and will attract tenants going forward.”

The Ameriprise Financial Center, a prominent office building in downtown Minneapolis, has been sold at a staggering 96% discount. The 31-story building, located at 707 2nd Avenue South, was purchased by a private equity firm for just a fraction of its original value.

The sale highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the commercial real estate market, as many office buildings in urban centers have seen a significant decrease in value due to remote work policies and reduced demand for office space.

Despite its discounted price, the Ameriprise Financial Center remains a sought-after property in downtown Minneapolis, with its prime location and modern amenities making it an attractive investment opportunity for the new owners.

This sale serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the commercial real estate industry in the wake of the pandemic, and the need for innovative solutions to adapt to the changing landscape of the office market.

  • Contract Awarded For Depot Lot Project In Downtown Howell

    January 22, 2025

    Jessica Mathews / news@whmi.com

The Depot Lot Reconstruction Project is moving forward with plans for a spring start in downtown Howell.

City Manager Erv Suida told WHMI they opened bids, which came in very favorable. A bid award has been conditionally approved by Council with C.E. Gleeson Contractors for an amount not to exceed $8.2 (m) million – contingent on approval from MEDC and HUD. It was the low bidder and has experience in similar work.

Suida said there are still some processes left to go through with their grants before they can enter into final agreements but from a Council standpoint, it’s been approved.

The City secured grant funding totaling $2,750 for the project.

Construction on the project will be taking place this year. Suida noted contractors are anxious to get started – maybe not so much physically but there’s a long lead time on certain items and they want to get them ordered to be ready for a spring start.

As a refresher, the project will bring 196 parking spots to the northwest quadrant of downtown. It will feature a pavilion that will house an ice skating rink in the winter, with a room available for rent for get-togethers. The goal is also to have skate rentals and sharpening available.

Suida said they are going to make it a really dynamic public space. It will have a water feature and fountains kids can play in, but not a splash pad. There will also be three fire features with large public gathering spots.

Associated is the “Parking Lot 10” project, on the west side of the Depot Lot that’s sort of a grassy field. That area along with Wetmore Street will be converted into the additional parking. The new parking lot will permanently close Wetmore Street, east of Civic Street, and add 136 spots. It will also feature two EV charging stations, some drought-tolerant landscaping, and a dumpster enclosure.

Suida said that lot will supplement the parking needs the downtown has and also the use at the Depot Lot that they hope to see.

More project information is in the provided link.

We are excited to announce that a contract has been awarded for the Depot Lot Project in downtown Howell! This project has been in the works for some time now, and we are thrilled to see it moving forward.

The Depot Lot Project will transform the current vacant lot into a vibrant community space that will serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. The project will include landscaping, seating areas, and other amenities that will make the space both functional and beautiful.

We are confident that the contractor we have selected will do an excellent job bringing our vision for the Depot Lot to life. We can’t wait to see the finished product and hope that it will be a welcome addition to the downtown area.

Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the Depot Lot Project, and be sure to come check out the finished space once it is complete. Thank you to all who have been involved in making this project a reality!

  • Massive fire destroyed block in downtown Ovid: Ovid Big M, Uptown Diner, Italian Kitchen, and apartments leveled

A catastrophic fire consumed the Big M grocery store and apartments in downtown Ovid Tuesday evening, leading to the collapse of the structure as over 200 firefighters battled the flames in frigid conditions.

The fire, reported around 6:06 PM on January 21, triggered a countywide emergency response, with firefighters and tankers from Seneca County and beyond rushing to the scene. Officials described the building as “fully involved” upon arrival, forcing crews into a defensive approach. By 8:15 PM, the structure had completely collapsed.

Emergency responders worked tirelessly through the night, rotating teams and bringing in heavy excavation equipment to assist in containing the inferno. Temperatures plunged below zero, creating additional challenges for firefighters battling the blaze.

Crews conducted a thorough search of the apartments above the Big M, clearing all residents without any reported injuries. However, as the fire spread southward to adjacent buildings on Main Street, efforts to bring it under control continued into the early hours of January 22. As results of the fire, Uptown Diner, Eva’s Laundry, and the Italian Kitchen were also destroyed.

The massive firefighting operation has strained the local water supply, prompting the Seneca County Health Department and the Village of Ovid Department of Public Works to issue a mandatory water conservation order. Residents served by the Village of Ovid Water system are being asked to limit water usage until further notice to ensure adequate supply for essential needs, including firefighting.

Crews remain on the scene, working to extinguish lingering hot spots and overhaul the site. The fire has caused significant destruction, with several businesses and apartments on Main Street affected.

This isn’t the first time downtown Ovid has dealt with this type of tragedy, though. Twenty-twenty four was the 10 year anniversary of a massive fire that destroyed another downtown block in Ovid. The blaze, which occurred on March 18, 2014, resulted in over $750,000 in damages but, remarkably, no civilian injuries were reported.

Residents are urged to adhere to the water conservation order and stay clear of the affected area to aid emergency efforts.

    Video from Ovid

This is a developing story. Check back for updates throughout the night.

The heart of downtown Ovid was left in ruins after a massive fire tore through a block of businesses and apartments. The beloved Ovid Big M grocery store, Uptown Diner, Italian Kitchen, and several apartments were leveled in the blaze.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, quickly spread through the interconnected buildings, leaving firefighters struggling to contain the flames. Despite their best efforts, the damage was too extensive to save the businesses and residences.

Residents and business owners are devastated by the loss of these iconic establishments, which have been a staple of the community for years. The Ovid Big M was not only a convenient grocery store, but also a gathering place for locals to catch up with neighbors and pick up essentials. The Uptown Diner and Italian Kitchen were popular dining spots, known for their delicious food and welcoming atmosphere.

As the community comes to terms with this tragic event, many are rallying together to support those affected by the fire. Fundraisers and donation drives are being organized to help the displaced residents and business owners rebuild their lives.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but one thing is certain – the loss of these beloved establishments has left a hole in the heart of downtown Ovid that will be difficult to fill.
