A Raleigh police officer was shot in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Tuesday night. The suspect in the shooting is dead.
“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound in an exchange of shots with the suspect,” Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce said.
The identity of the officer and the circumstances of the shooting were not released.
Boyce did not saw what brought officers to Democracy Street in the Renaissance Park subdivision.
“This probably all started around 5:50,” Drew Duffy told WRAL News.
“The police are, wow, they’re flying down the highway right now,” he told WRAL’s Ashley Rowe in a phone conversation just after 6:30 p.m.
“This is happening right now.”
Carlos Jenkins, who was out for a walk to get something to eat, told WRAL News he heard at least eight shots.
“I would describe it as like GTA (Grand Theft Auto, a videogame). You don’t ever see this many police out here,” Jenkins said.
As WRAL’s Shaun Gallagher reported from the scene, officers asked him to move back, to take shelter behind a police vehicle. Multiple shots could be heard as Gallagher explained the developing situation.
Boyce said as police surrounded the house, someone inside fired shots.
“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound. He is in the hospital at this time and needs your prayers,” he said.
An emergency alert issued to mobile phones in the area advised those in the area of Tryon Road and U.S. 70/401, “GO INSIDE & STAY INSIDE NOW.”
A caravan of police vehicles rolled out of the neighborhood just before 7 p.m., believed to be carrying the injured officer to a hospital. Within minutes, New Bern Avenue was closed between the exit from Interstate 440 and WakeMed in Raleigh. At least two ambulances arrived at the emergency department.
Just after 7:30 p.m., police issued an all clear for the Renaissance Park neighborhood.

Historic Downtown Los Angeles Building Destroyed by Fire
A massive fire erupted in a vacant building in Downtown Los Angeles, requiring over 100 firefighters to battle the flames for more than 90 minutes before gaining control.
On December 26, 2024 at 10:58AM, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1200 block of S Hope Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived to find a vacant, four-story building (three floors residential over one floor of commercial units) with light smoke showing.
Vacant for over 15 years, the building was frequent training site for LAFD, giving crews an advantage in quickly navigating the structure. Firefighters made their way up and located heavy fire on the fourth floor. The well-developed fire breached the roof and triggered the Incident Commander’s decision to move to a defensive operation.
While LAFD was arriving on scene, several dozen people self-evacuated the structure. As firefighters were making their way through the building, they located an additional three people on the third floor. They evacuated the people to safety via ground ladders crews deployed to fire escapes.
Multiple fire trucks used ladder pipes to douse the blaze from above while firefighters also used large diameter hand lines from the ground. After one hour and 37 minutes, the over 100 firefighters working under the command of Assistant Chief Melford Beard extinguished the fire with no injuries reported and prevented it from damaging any other structures.
The nearly 50,000 square foot, E-shaped building, built in 1914 was already red-tagged by Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) prior to the fire. It sustained partial roof collapse and with the structural integrity in doubt, it was not safe for firefighters to make entry to fully extinguish the remaining pockets of fire. Therefore, crews will remain on fire watch through the night to ensure public safety and no flare-ups. As firefighters were unable to confirm the fourth floor was evacuated prior to arrival, Human Remains Detection K9s will be used, once safe, to search the structure.
The decision on the future of the historic building resides with LADBS.
Per protocol for a Major Emergency incident, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and is conducting an active investigation into the cause of the fire.

‘Morrison Hotel’ made famous by The Doors on fire
The now-vacant “Morrison Hotel” that was made famous by rock icon The Doors has burned down in downtown Los Angeles.
LOS ANGELES – Firefighters are investigating to determine if homeless people are responsible for a large fire that destroyed the historic Morrison Hotel Thursday in downtown Los Angeles. The former hotel, located at the intersection of Pico and Hope, has been vacant for about 10 years.
Around 11:20 a.m., more than 100 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department were called to the four-story, nearly 100-year-old building that was erupting in massive flames. Cellphone video shared with FOX 11 shows at least one person trying to leave the property on an outside fire escape.
Although the building is vacant, fire officials said there were some homeless people in the structure, and ladders were raised to the building’s windows to help them exit.
“In the fire department, we say there are no vacant buildings in the City of Los Angeles,” said David Ortiz from LAFD. “A lot of the large, unhoused community uses these vacant buildings as their temporary residences. Several dozen [today] were seen self-evacuating at the time of the fire.”
The fire department classified the incident as a major emergency, deploying 17 fire companies to the scene. The fire was knocked down within an hour and a half. No major injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters.
The Doors rock band made the Morrison Hotel famous with their 1970s album also called “The Morrison Hotel.” The building itself was built in 1914 and is considered a landmark. Last year, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation purchased the property for almost $12 million with plans of transforming it into affordable housing.
“It’s been vacant for probably 10 years,” said Mark Dyer from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “We were going to renovate it and create another 111 units.”
According to Dyer, he had complained to the city about homeless people breaking into the Morrison. Dyer says he worried about a possible fire. “Last week when we cleared the building, there were about 15 [homeless people inside],” said Dyer. “As soon as we secure the building, the homeless come up with power tools within hours and just cut the locks off.”
The historic hotel now has no roof and has been “red-tagged” by the city. It’s considered unlivable. East and west traffic on Pico Boulevard was temporarily closed, and officials advised drivers to avoid Pico and Hope in the downtown area.
“It was just a big fire,” said Juan Jose Gutierrez, a nearby business owner. “I personally have never seen a big fire like that. [The affordable housing] would have been nice for the community, but unfortunately, the building is no more.”

CHICAGO (WLS) — There was a long line before former Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose’s one-day pop-up flower shop opened Thursday afternoon.
Rose’s Flower Shop is open from noon to 4 p.m. at 350 N. State St. downtown.

Downtown LA shootings: 2 security guards shot near busy shopping plaza and 2 others shot just mile away in separate incident
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Two separate shootings within blocks of each other left four people injured, including two security guards, Monday night in downtown Los Angeles, according to police.
Shooting at busy shopping plaza
The first incident was reported just before 9 p.m. at the FIGat7th shopping center on Figueroa and 7th streets, just outside of the Target store.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the security guards tried to stop a shoplifting suspect when that suspect pulled out a gun and shot them.
When officers arrived, they found two security guards suffering from gunshot wounds. They were both taken to a local hospital. One of them was shot in the stomach and was listed in critical condition.
The other guard was shot in the arm and leg, and is expected to survive.
Meanwhile, Eyewitness News obtained an exclusive photo of the suspect, who remains at large. Investigators believe he is about 25 years old.
Judith Conway told ABC7 she was waiting in the checkout line when she heard gunshots outside.
“[It was] extremely loud, extremely traumatic,” she said. “We all just started running towards the back. We were guided by one of the sales reps, one of the cashiers I should say, at the front. But extremely traumatic, we heard several rounds go off, and we just pretty much ran towards the back and just left our items in the cart, and just tried to do the best that we could to get to safety.”
She recalled seeing people crying and heard several others screaming.
“Some people were running towards the aisles, some people were hiding toward the clothes, everyone just started running and scattering in different directions,” said Conway.
Two separate shootings within blocks of each other left four people injured Monday night in downtown Los Angeles, according to police.
Shooting on 7th Street and Maple Avenue
Another shooting near 7th Street and Maple Avenue, which is about a mile from the shopping mall, also injured two people, according to police.
A man and a woman were both rushed to the hospital in an unknown condition. Information on a suspect or suspects in this case was not immediately available.
Investigators do not believe that shooting is connected to the earlier shooting of the two security guards.

Tonight, Arizona bowl is hosting a exciting party featuring food trucks, a silent disco, and of course the infamous taco drop. Similar to the ball in Times Square, when the clock strikes midnight, the giant taco will be lowered from the sky to welcome 2025.
The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and runs until midnight. Admission to the Downtown Bowl Bash is free, but, it’s recommended to bring money for food and drinks.

If you can’t decided where to celebrate the holiday, tickets are available now for the New Year’s Eve 2025 Bar Crawl downtown. Ticket buyers can bounce from bar to bar with each location offering exclusive offers heading into 2025.
Some participating bars and restaurants include: Sky Bar, TraXide Taproom, Corbett’s, O’Malley’s Bar & Grill, Brooklyn Pizza, The Hut and many more.
