Drake Maye eager to be coached by Josh McDaniels like Tom Brady was
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye knows the history of new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and that’s why he’s so excited to be coached by him.
McDaniels has spent a total of 18 years on the Patriots’ coaching staff over two stints, and McDaniels knows that Tom Brady attributes much of his success to the coaching he had from McDaniels.
“Coach McDaniels, obviously what he’s done [with the Patriots] and the success he’s had,” Maye said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via MassLive.com. “I’m fortunate to be able to have a guy come in who has done it at a high level and learn from him coaching one of the best ever — the best ever, in my opinion, Tom.”
Maye said he’s eager to sit down with McDaniels and study what he and Brady did together.
“So, I have a great chance to go back — all those years of film he has in the little database, it’s all their play-calls, all Coach McDaniels’ stuff and what he did with Tom,” Maye said. “So it’s fortunate for me to go back and study it up and get ready for this next season.”
It’s not realistic to think anyone can match Brady’s achievements, but McDaniels may be able to help Maye develop into the second-best quarterback in Patriots history.

Patriots QB Drake Maye excited to work with Mike Vrabel, Josh McDaniels in 2025
New England’s 2024 season resulted in a 4-13 record, leading to Jerod Mayo’s exit and Vrabel’s hiring.
Even though Vrabel has not coached since he parted ways with the Tennessee Titans in 2024, he was one of the most experienced coaches in this year’s cycle. In his six seasons in Tennessee, the Titans had a 54-45 record with three playoff trips. Vrabel also won the 2021 AP NFL Coach of the Year award.
In Vrabel’s introductory news conference as the Patriots head coach, he said he wanted to get “great people around” Maye. The New England Patriots have their quarterback of the future. Drake Maye played well in 2024 despite being thrown into poor circumstances, completing 66.6% of his passes at an average of 6.7 yards per attempt, with 15 touchdowns against 10 interceptions in 13 starts. He also ran for 421 yards and two additional scores on his 54 carries. Considering the offensive line in front of him and the pass-catching corps at his disposal, it was a pretty fantastic rookie season.
But the Patriots themselves were kind of a disaster, and so the Jerod Mayo-led coaching staff was let go after just one season. To replace Mayo, the Patriots reached back into the past to hire Mike Vrabel, the former head coach of the Tennessee Titans whose best years as a player also came in New England. And Vrabel himself reached into the past for an offensive coordinator, bringing in longtime former Pats OC Josh McDaniels to run the offense.
And Maye is excited to work with them both.
“Yeah, he reached out to me and we got on the phone. He’s been awesome,” Maye said of Vrabel, via Sirius XM. “Obviously, a guy who’s done it and played in the league and won a Super Bowl, you have a respect of what he’s done and seeing what he’s done. I think the biggest thing is he’s been a head coach and he knows what it’s like. So excited to get up to New England and get things going.”
As for McDaniels, he seemed enthused by the idea of playing for a guy who helped direct the successes of the player who is considered by many to be the greatest quarterback of all time.

Maye has a chance to build on what he did as a rookie, through the Patriots. The Patriots should at the very least be a better-coached team in 2025 than they were in 2024, and that should help Maye raise his baseline level of play. They’ll need to give him a great deal more help if they want him to fulfill his potential, though, and that’s something that will have to be done this offseason.

In keeping with the police department’s commitment to be innovative in its mission to enhance Nashville’s safety, Chief John Drake today announced the implementation of an additional overlapping officer work shift effective February 1 to enhance police visibility during peak hours and reduce response time for non-emergency calls.
“The new D-shift, to be staffed by a total of 41 officers, 5 sergeants and 1 lieutenant, will operate 7 days a week between the hours of noon and 10:30 p.m.,” Chief Drake said. “D-shift officers will have the flexibility to provide additional resources to any of our 8 precincts across the county, particularly those that have a higher volume of pending calls.”
Officers comprising the D-shift had been part of precinct-based community engagement teams, which continue to be fully operational, just with fewer personnel. Chief Drake noted that community engagement will always be one of the MNPD’s core pillars.
The new D-shift will provide for 4 overlapping shifts on a daily basis:
- Day Detail (A-shift): 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Evening Detail (B-shift): 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
- Overnight Detail (C-shift): 9 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
- Afternoon/Evening Detail (D-shift): noon-10:30 p.m.
The D-shift will be led by Lieutenant Brad Nave. Considering regular days off, vacations, sick leave, in-service training, etc., the D-shift will operate with a minimum staffing of 18 officers plus supervisors. Besides supporting precincts with a high call volume, D shift officers will also assist in securing large crime scenes, respond to demonstrations/protests, and support other precision policing efforts.
Attention all department members,I am pleased to announce that starting tomorrow, we will be implementing a new additional officer work shift to better serve our community. This decision comes in response to the increasing demands and calls for service that our department has been receiving.
The new shift will provide us with more coverage during peak hours and help us maintain a proactive approach to crime prevention. Our goal is to enhance our response times and overall effectiveness in keeping our community safe.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye checked in from the Pro Bowl with his first public comments on new head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Speaking to Sirius XM radio on Friday, the Pro Bowl alternate shared his excitement for the Patriots new-look coaching staff. In his introductory press conference, Vrabel said the Pats quarterback, who is down in Orlando this week at the Pro Bowl Games, was one reason he found the job in New England appealing, calling Maye a “young, dynamic quarterback.”
During his radio interview at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games, Maye said that he’s already been in communication with his new head coach.
“[Vrabel] reached out to me, and we got on the phone. He’s been awesome. Obviously, a guy who’s done it, played in the league, and won a Super Bowl,” Maye told Sirius XM. “You have a respect for what he’s done and seen what he’s done. I think the biggest thing is he’s been a head coach and knows what it’s like. So excited to get up to New England and get things going.”
The 22-year-old starting quarterback was a late addition to the Pro Bowl roster following a promising rookie season. Maye finished his first season as the 17th-ranked quarterback in ESPN’s total QBR metric out of 32 qualified passers (58.6), slightly ahead of fellow rookie QB Bo Nix (56.9) and one spot below Jags QB Trevor Lawrence (59.3). The Pats QB threw for 2,276 passing yards with 17 total touchdowns in 12 starts as a rookie.
Along with sharing his excitement for his new head coach, Maye was also asked about offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels returning to direct New England’s offense. With the Pats top brass spending the last week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Vrabel suggested that McDaniels will add “new trends” to his offense that will also cater the offense to Maye.
“There’s been some growth from the offense over the years, and [McDaniels] has blended that with some of the new trends, but the foundation will remain the same,” Vrabel said. “We’re going to want to do things that maybe they didn’t do with previous quarterbacks here.”
As the head coach stated, Maye has a different skill set than most of the quarterbacks that McDaniels has worked with previously. Mainly, the second-year QB is a dual threat, with the ability to stress defenses with his arm talent and mobility. The hope is that McDaniels will leverage all of Maye’s physical tools against opposing defenses, giving New England’s offense as many ways as possible to move the ball and score points.

Before the Patriots’ final game of the 2024 season, Maye spoke to reporters about where he has improved the most. “I think I’m just trying to attack each and every day, try to improve little things here and there throughout games, try to still protect the football better,” Maye said, earlier this month, per the Patriots’ official website. “I think that’s something I need to improve on. What I would improve on, I think just playing the role as quarterback, being a quarterback in the National Football League.

“I’ve learned a lot from Jacoby [Brissett]. Drake Maye earns NFL Pro Bowl honors
It turns out the Patriots have a Pro Bowler on their roster after all.
After the team’s offensive and defensive players were shut out of the NFL’s Pro Bowl games, rookie quarterback Drake Maye has been added to the Pro Bowl roster as an alternate.
This season, the Patriots had one Pro Bowl player in special teamer Brendan Schooler, who dropped out of the games due to surgery. Maye is the first Patriots offensive player to be named to the Pro Bowl since 2021 when then-rookie quarterback Mac Jones was named to the team as an alternate.
The NFL revealed the Pro Bowl rosters earlier this month. At quarterback, Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson were named for the AFC. Allen was named the AFC starter, however, the quarterback suffered a wrist injury during the Bills AFC Championship loss to Kansas City and said he wasn’t sure if he would participate in the NFL games.
In the end, Allen and Jackson pulled out of the Pro Bowl. They were replaced by Maye and Russell Wilson.
In 13 games, Maye completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,276 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The No. 3 overall pick looked the part of a future franchise quarterback. He also added 421 yards on the ground to go with two rushing touchdowns.
Maye’s potential was part of why Mike Vrabel wanted to come to New England. The new head coach said he was excited to work with the athletic quarterback.
“He’s exciting, talented, ready to learn, and ready to continue to develop,” Vrabel told WBZ. “He’s athletic and mobile, has the ability to make throws to all part of the field with arm talent… There will be some new terminology and some carryover from what he’s had. I know that he’s ready to learn and is excited. We welcome that and want him to lead our football team.”
The NFL has changed the structure of the Pro Bowl. Starting Thursday, there will be the Pro Bowl Skills Show. There will be six competitions – Passing the Test, Satisfying Catches, The Big Spike, Relay Race, Helmet Harmony, and Dodgeball. That will air from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.
On Sunday, at 3 p.m., there will be the AFC vs. NFC flag football game. That can be vied on ESPN and ABC.
The Patriots didn’t have a single Pro Bowler last season. In 2022, they were represented by Matthew Judon. In 2021, they had three players voted on initially with Judon, Matthew Slater, and J.C. Jackson. Eventually, Jones was named an alternate at quarterback.
Now, Maye is the latest Patriots player to earn the honor.
