  • Tuesday’s BYU-Baylor clash is drawing hordes of NBA scouts – Deseret News

Two of the top freshmen guards and 2025 NBA draft prospects in the country, BYU’s Egor Demin and Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe, will square off Tuesday night when the Cougars host the Bears in a pivotal Big 12 battle at the Marriott Center.

Naturally, it has drawn the attention of pro scouts, who are expected to flock to Provo to watch the teenagers who are expected to be one-and-done college players and enter June’s draft, although Demin has pointed out several times this season that he has never said anything definitive on the matter.

“There has been a lot of traffic in and out of here. I get calls all the time. A bunch of people coming tomorrow as well,” BYU coach Kevin Young said Monday in his weekly press briefing via Zoom.

    How many scouts are expected?

BYU basketball spokesperson Tyson Jex reported that as of 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, 26 scouts representing 13 NBA teams had requested credentials.

“It is the most we have had this year,” Jex said. “I know that off the top of my head.”

BYU (13-6, 4-4) and Demin didn’t play well the past two times that dozens of NBA scouts flocked to the Cougars’ games, losing 83-64 at Providence and 86-55 at Houston. Demin went 0 for 10 from the field (but was 6 of 6 from the line) on Dec. 3 at Providence while battling a knee contusion that would sideline him the remainder of the month, and was 1 of 6 at Houston, with seven assists and three turnovers.

The 18-year-old from Moscow, Russia, has played significantly better the past two games, going 4 of 7 for eight points and seven assists in the win at Colorado and 3 of 5 for 15 points and seven assists in the 80-52 crushing of Cincinnati last Saturday.

“Certainly it is a step in the right direction for him. He is a guy, even when he was going through some rough times, his confidence never really wavered. I think he was just trying to figure things out. When I say figure things out, I just mean the style of play, defenses, who he is playing with, and so forth,” Young said of the young star.

“I think a lot of things are starting to get smoothed out for him. You have a game like that where you make shots, and you make free throws, I definitely think it will give him an added boost of confidence,” Young continued. “But I have been happy with how he has approached going through some tough times.”

After Saturday’s game, Demin said he is feeling “better and better” with each passing day and feeling “more and more comfortable” with the physical, rugged style of basketball played in the Big 12.

Demin said he is looking forward to facing Baylor and Edgecombe, having followed the successful program and highly recruited prospect from the Bahamas even when he was playing in Europe.

Edgecombe, 19, a 6-foot-5 wing, has played well all season, but has really upped his production the past six games. He had 30 and 21 points, respectively, in blowouts of Kansas State and Utah last week and is averaging 14.2 points, second on the team behind 6-foot-7 forward Norchad Omier’s 15.4.

“Yeah, VJ is dynamic. He is one of the most dynamic players in the country. He has got a lot of upside,” Young said. “Athletically, they are really good, not just with him, but across the board.”

With Baylor’s NET ranking standing at 28 and BYU’s at 38, it will be one of the marquee games in all of college basketball on Tuesday night, and not just because of the matchup of fabulous freshmen. It will also begin a string where eight of BYU’s next nine games are Quad 1 games, if current rankings hold.

“It is going to be a really big matchup, and I am glad we get them here,” said another of BYU’s players who is starting to draw some NBA attention, 6-5 junior wing Richie Saunders.

Baylor (13-6, 5-3) edged BYU 81-72 last January at the new Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas, then fell 78-71 on Feb. 20 in Provo despite enjoying a 21-9 advantage at the free-throw line in a physical game that featured 35 fouls.

Neither Langston Love (ankle) nor Jeremy Roach (concussion) played against Utah, and both are day-to-day for Tuesday night’s game, a Baylor basketball spokesperson told the Tribune-Herald of Waco.

“As athletic as they are, I think we play a bit faster. So it will be interesting matchup stylistically,” Young said. “We will have to do a good job of neutralizing their athleticism with good team defense, and then (use) our ability to space the floor on the other end and make quick decisions like we like to play.”

Scouts will probably keep an eye on another BYU freshman, 6-9 forward Kanon Catchings, as well. A four-star recruit who was rated No. 35 in the ESPN Top 100 but has struggled to adjust to the physicality of the college game, Catchings hasn’t scored in double figures since getting 11 in the Big 12 opener against Arizona State. But the Indiana native did have a good game off the bench against Cincinnati, going 3 of 5 from deep.

“We obviously have an NBA lens on everything that we are doing. So like, when I talk to my friends in the NBA, yeah, I think those guys are clearly on radars,” Young said of Demin and Catchings. “… So we have had no shortage of eyes on those guys. A lot of that stuff kind of plays itself out as the season goes along, and as draft season goes along, as workouts go along, as interviews go along.

“So yeah, I do think they will be there (in the NBA) sooner rather than later, but that is a relative statement,” Young concluded.

The highly anticipated matchup between BYU and Baylor on Tuesday night is not only attracting college basketball fans, but also drawing the attention of NBA scouts. Both teams are loaded with talent and potential future NBA players, making this game a must-watch for scouts looking to evaluate top prospects.

BYU boasts a dynamic duo in Alex Barcello and Caleb Lohner, who have been turning heads with their impressive performances this season. Barcello, a senior guard, is a skilled playmaker and sharpshooter, while Lohner, a sophomore forward, has been dominating on both ends of the court.

On the other side, Baylor features a talented roster led by guards James Akinjo and Adam Flagler, who have been key contributors to the team’s success. Akinjo, a transfer from Arizona, is a dynamic scorer and facilitator, while Flagler is a sharpshooter who can light it up from beyond the arc.

With so much talent on display, NBA scouts will be closely monitoring this game to evaluate the players’ skills, potential, and readiness for the next level. This matchup could have a significant impact on the draft stock of several players, making it a crucial opportunity for them to showcase their abilities on a big stage.

Don’t miss out on the action as BYU and Baylor face off in what promises to be a thrilling showdown with NBA implications. Tune in to see which players rise to the occasion and catch the attention of scouts looking for the next big star in college basketball.

Got my first tablet when I was 12, a Wacom, was expensive. Then wanted a cintiq, $1000 was too much.. found Huion, got their larger model size a long time ago, then upgraded to a huion 1080+ pro, I still use it at home for larger projects- that was only $300-$400 and the quality and build is amazing.Needed something more lightweight, portable so I saw this and decided to buy it. I also got a MacBook Air I saw on sale, decided to pair these 2 together and it’s great! I use clip studio paint the older version. Beginner, pro, it doesn’t matter, it will get the job done, plug and play easy, download the right driver and you’re golden. The buttons all work and the flow is 10/10 for me.Now that im older I don’t care about name brand stuff, it genuinely relies on you as an artist to use the tools you have in the budget you want. Thank you huion you always gonna be my go to brand for tablets

Okay, I will start off by stating that I am not a professional graphic artist so don't expect an especially artistic bent to this review. I am an avid photographer and have worked in the creative arts my entire career. I love digital photography and the ability to manipulate photos after the fact.

The ability to control light and shadows, exposure, midtones, saturation, etc. and being able to control tiny areas of the photograph are all things that I manipulate in the digital darkroom. In order to really work well with masks and feathering to control the effects it really helps to have a tablet and pen. For years I have been using a Wacom Bamboo tablet and pen. They were great for entry level work and for experimenting to see if a tablet was really going to be the tool of choice for me.

Well, recently, I built a new PC and the software that I use for photography was upgraded. The response of the Wacom tablet and pen had become unpredictable and disappointing. Wacom no longer had new drivers for the Bamboo tablet line that worked well with Windows 10, so I went on Amazon to see what the latest crop of tablets was like. I didn't want to spend a ton of money since I don't make my living doing this. After reviewing several of the tablets there were just a few criteria that were important to me: The size of the tablet, the number of customizable buttons and their layout, and a pen that didn't require a battery or recharging.

I was intrigued by some tablets that were wireless and would allow me to avoid worrying about cords dangling around the keyboard. But after considering how I use my pen and tablet, I realized that I didn't need a wireless version. I had used a Huion tablet before and had been relatively pleased with how it works (it is still at my desk at work where I use it on occasion). But this H640P looked particularly intriguing and the price was certainly appealing.

I hooked it up for the first time today and I can tell that Huion has made great leaps forward in the design and function of their tablets. This one is FANTASTIC for what I need it to do. It is SMOOTH and responsive. I have customized the tablet buttons and layout a few times and think I have it roughly where I want it. Using the pen as a digital brush has become a true joy. Having used Wacoms on Macs at work I can tell you that the response and ease of use on my PC with this new tablet feels just as good. I am so impressed with the ease of use I am looking for additional photos to play with!

The size of the tablet is great and I can shift it on and off of my lap easily. I keep it right near my keyboard and mouse (yes, there are some things I like to do that require a mouse) for easy access. The tablet is very lightweight yet solid. The nib of the pen glides on this surface. The pressure sensitivity of the pen is fully adjustable in the driver software and I couldn't be happier with how that function works. It has more than 8000 levels of pressure sensitivity allowing me to manipulate the size of the brush on the fly. If I want to expand my brush I just press a bit harder and watch the cursor expand and contract as I press harder or softer.

And price is $50.00!!! This thing is a STEAL at this price. If you are on the fence and you have the money to spend (and with Amazon's return efficiency should you decide this tablet isn't right for you) you should DEFINITELY LOOK HARD at this model. I am very pleased with my choice and look forward to a long relationship with my new Huion Inspiroy tablet.

So, for this review to help your purchase, you need to check these boxes.

    – Do you plan to use the full area of this tablet? (if not, look at something like the H430, it's cheaper, and smaller. have used it before, works about the same.)
    – Are you on Windows? (7, 8, 10, 11, all works about the same)
    – Are you ok with the hassle of downloading alternate drivers?

If you answered yes to these questions, then this review is for you. Let's get into it.

So, all things considered, this thing is great! Pen pressure works, full area is great, very responsive, just all in all a good price to performance tablet. Now, thats about all good things I have to say. In to the nitty gritty we go…

The drivers suck, and they suck bad. Things have obviously been google translated and it shows. It "works" well enough for people just giving things a try, but if you are sticking with this tablet in the long run, the driver experience just isn't there. A fix for this is OpenTabletDriver. Primarily, this is used by osu! players, however it has been optimized for most drawing softwares out of the box. Paint.net, Photoshop, Krita, you name it. But – this isn't an advertisement on the fratures of OpenTabletDriver, so do your own research and see if it's right for you.

Moving along, the nibs wear down easily compared to other tablets. It isn't exactly the worst problem, as it still takes a LONG time to get through them all, but having to pay 20$ every so often (maybe about a year with heavy use in my experience) it isnt really ideal. But, hey, at least it comes with replacements… (cough cough gaomon cough cough)

Also – for the osu! players out there. Just get the H430. I promise you, you will not be using the full area of this tablet. Thank me later.

Anyways, I'll stop writing now. Hopefully this helps someone!

I'm a professional photographer and use a tablet daily. I needed to replace the small one that I had been using and decided to go with this. I'm glad I did. It works great, and it's very responsive. I'm on a MacBook Pro M1, and have had no issues with the driver or functionality. Every once in a while if I am using a second monitor, I have to go in and change the active area to the second monitor, but it's easy to make the switch and once I do it stays there. The pen is comfortable and easy to grip. The tilt and active pressure functions are very responsive and flow naturally. My only regret is that I didn't go for the Bluetooth / wireless version. I have to connect using a USB-C port. So I might get a dock and leave it connected. That way I don't have to keep plugging it in every time I want to use it. Overall, I think it's a great upgrade to the small one I previously had, and I am very happy to have and use this one. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a tablet that won't break your bank.

This was my first digital drawing tablet and I have to say I'm blown away. I got the H950P, it comes with Android device adapters, tablet cable, extra pen nibs, pen stand, a pen that doesn't need to be charged which has 2 keys of its own, and the tablet which has 8 mappable keys. I use Krita as my main drawing application and managed to pick it up within half an hour. The tilt support is awesome, it's a good sensitivity to pressure, and the working space is big enough to be comfortable. I would recommend getting a glove with it or putting some fabric under your hand for cleaner lines (so your hand doesn't stick to it) but other than that the whole thing is awesome. It was also incredibly easy to setup and map the keys. Definitely recommend.

  • Rutgers cancels DEI conference after Trump executive orders, drawing ire of NJ politicians

Rutgers University has drawn the ire of New Jersey politicians for cancelling a scheduled Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conference following President Donald Trump’s executive orders on DEI this week.

“We have been asked to cease all work under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility HUB at Jobs for the Future, which the U.S. Department of Labor funds,” Rutgers said on Thursday in an email to registered attendees for the canceled Jan. 30 “HBCUs and Registered Apprenticeship Mini-Conference.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, both Democratic candidates for governor, took to X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday to denounce the university’s decision.

“Rutgers, and any other schools preemptively pulling DEI programming, is an utter failure of courage in the face of political foolishness,” Baraka posted. “Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords — they are proven strategies that make our workplaces more productive, our students more learned, and our economy stronger and more stable.”

Baraka calling Trump a “bully,” wrote: “I call on all private sector partners, responsible corporations, and those who believe in democracy to stand with our institutions against the threat of defunding.”

Fulop agreed with his fellow Democrat posting “now is no time to cower to bullies.”

    Story continues below photo gallery

He was also critical of the university’s leadership, writing: “Rutgers as an institution has fostered a bully culture for a few years now. One that targets employees with institutional knowledge and memory, which does a disservice to the students. Look no further than the most recent additions to the Board as where the worst of NJ politics and higher education intertwine…”

He pledged that if elected governor: “I will end the university’s bend toward corporate interests and machine favors, and I will nominate retired professors and staff to serve as members of the Board of Governors.”

Others were also critical of Rutgers’ decision to cancel the conference.

“The capitulation continues. These ill-conceived moves are pushing American higher education backwards. We must fight back,” the American Association of University Professors posted.

    Trump DEI executive orders

Trump signed two executive orders this week relating to DEI.

On Monday, he signed “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” which among other things called for the government to terminate “all discriminatory programs, including illegal DEI and “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” (DEIA) mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities in the Federal Government.”

On Tuesday, Trump issued “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” which claims that the “Federal Government, major corporations, financial institutions, the medical industry, large commercial airlines, law enforcement agencies, and institutions of higher education have adopted and actively use dangerous, demeaning, and immoral race- and sex-based preferences under the guise of so-called “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) or “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” (DEIA) that can violate the civil-rights laws of this Nation.”

The order calls on “all executive departments and agencies to terminate all discriminatory and illegal preferences, mandates, policies, programs, activities, guidance, regulations, enforcement actions, consent orders, and requirements.”

This article originally appeared on NorthJersey.com: Rutgers cancels DEI conference following Trump executive orders

Rutgers University’s decision to cancel its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conference following President Trump’s recent executive orders has sparked controversy and criticism from New Jersey politicians.

The university announced the cancellation of the conference, which was set to address issues of racial equality and social justice, citing concerns over potential legal implications of the executive orders. The orders, which target diversity training programs that address systemic racism and sexism, have been met with backlash from civil rights groups and activists.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, along with several state lawmakers, have condemned Rutgers’ decision to cancel the conference, arguing that it is a violation of free speech and academic freedom. In a statement, Governor Murphy said, “Rutgers’ decision to cancel the DEI conference is a troubling example of the chilling effect that these executive orders are having on institutions of higher education.”

State Senator Teresa Ruiz echoed these sentiments, stating, “Rutgers should be a place where diverse perspectives are welcomed and celebrated, not silenced. This decision sends a dangerous message to students, faculty, and the community at large.”

The controversy surrounding Rutgers’ cancellation of the DEI conference highlights the ongoing debate over the role of diversity and inclusion efforts in higher education and society at large. As the university faces criticism from politicians and advocates, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact its reputation and commitment to promoting social justice and equality.
