  • Selena Gomez’s Deleted Post About Undocumented Immigrants Draws Criticism

On Monday, a day after Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that it had made 956 arrests as part of President Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants, the actress and singer Selena Gomez posted an Instagram video to her 422 million followers in which she discussed the situation while crying.

She has since deleted the original post, but its short run online created quite a stir, with Mr. Trump’s “border czar” and numerous political commentators weighing in. One of the commentators called for Ms. Gomez, who was born in Texas, to be deported.

Immigration is a subject personal to Ms. Gomez, a star of the television show “Only Murders in the Building” and the Oscar-nominated film “Emilia Pérez.” In 2019, she wrote an essay for Time magazine in which she reflected on being the granddaughter of undocumented immigrants from Mexico who eventually gained U.S. citizenship. Her aunt, she said, crossed the border hidden in the back of a truck. Her father was born in the United States.

“Immigration is a divisive political issue,” Ms. Gomez wrote. “But immigration goes beyond politics and headlines. It is a human issue, affecting real people, dismantling real lives.”

In 2017, Ms. Gomez was an executive producer on the Netflix documentary “Living Undocumented,” which looked at the lives of eight families living in the United States. “I watched footage outlining their deeply personal journeys and I cried,” Ms. Gomez wrote in the Time essay. “It captured the shame, uncertainty and fear I saw my own family struggle with.”

With Mr. Trump quickly fulfilling his campaign promise to ramp up arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants, Ms. Gomez was again moved to tears, this time on social media.

Ms. Gomez, sitting in a beige-colored room and looking into the camera, said, “All my people are getting attacked, the children.” She was visibly distraught; her face appeared red from crying and her voice broke as she spoke. Wiping away tears, she added, “I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” Ms. Gomez’s video was captioned with the words, “I’m sorry” next to a Mexican flag emoji.

After her post, Ms. Gomez was immediately hit with a great deal of negative feedback on all social media platforms, which she acknowledged in her Instagram stories. “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” she wrote in a follow-up post that was also deleted.

Thomas D. Homan, the acting director of ICE during Mr. Trump’s first term and current White House “border czar,” took issue with Ms. Gomez’s post. In an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Mr. Homan suggested that Ms. Gomez’s empathy for deported immigrants was misplaced. “We’ve got a quarter of a million Americans dead from fentanyl coming across an open border. Where’s the tears for them?” Mr. Homan said.

Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative political group Turning Point USA, questioned on X why Ms. Gomez, an American, would identify with the undocumented immigrants rather than her fellow Americans. The political commentator Tomi Lahren said on X, “This is why we don’t take our political advice from Disney child stars.”

Among the most extreme reactions came from Samuel Parker, a Republican who sought to run for the U.S. Senate from Utah in 2018. He wrote a post on X in which he called Ms. Gomez’s grandparents “illegals,” despite their having been naturalized as U.S. citizens, and said, “Maybe Selena should be deported, too?”

Others took a more measured approach to Ms. Gomez’s tearful message. “This is an issue for some people that is extremely emotional,” Ashley Allison, a CNN political commentator and former staffer in the Obama and Biden administrations, said during a round-table discussion on the network. “I’m not going to demean Selena Gomez because she was emotionally enraged.”

She also received public support from a wide range of prominent people, including Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer; the former talk-show host Geraldo Rivera and the rapper Flavor Flav.

Yes. In an Instagram story, Ms. Gomez responded to Mr. Parker, writing, “Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”

Mr. Parker pinned a screenshot of her message to the top of his X profile.

Selena Gomez’s Deleted Post About Undocumented Immigrants Draws Criticism

Selena Gomez recently took to social media to share a post in support of undocumented immigrants, calling for compassion and understanding towards those seeking a better life. However, the post was quickly deleted after receiving backlash and criticism from some of her followers.

Many criticized Gomez for speaking out on a political issue, with some arguing that celebrities should stay out of politics. Others accused her of being out of touch with the realities of illegal immigration and the impact it has on communities.

While Gomez has been vocal about her support for immigrant rights in the past, this latest post sparked a firestorm of debate and controversy. Some defended her right to speak out, praising her for using her platform to raise awareness about important issues.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it’s clear that Selena Gomez’s deleted post has sparked a conversation about immigration and the role of celebrities in activism. What are your thoughts on this situation? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Rickey Henderson memorial draws near in Oakland

Tony La Russa cut right to it about Rickey Henderson, calling him “the most beloved teammate we ever had.”

La Russa said so Saturday night while sharing a stage with Dave Stewart, Dennis Eckersley and Jose Canseco, all of whom beamed with pride as their former skipper shared tales of the A’s “great personalities” from 35 years ago.

More tributes about Henderson will flow Saturday at 1 p.m. when a public service will be held in his honor at the Oakland Arena, next door to the Coliseum basepaths where Henderson forged his Hall of Fame legacy as baseball’s all-time leader in stolen bases (1,406) and runs scored (2,295).

Tickets are sold out on TicketMaster but available on the secondary market. No live stream broadcast is available, according to an Athletics spokesperson.

Hall of Famers expected to attend are La Russa, Eckersley, Joe Torre, Reggie Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr., Frank Thomas and Dave Winfield, along with Hall of Fame president Josh Rawitch.

La Russa, invited along with Stewart to speak at the service, gave a sneak preview of his feelings last weekend at his Champions to the Rescue show benefitting his family’s latest animal welfare foundation. La Russa’s tone changed as “teary-eyed” thoughts drifted to a handful of players who’ve died, a lineup that sadly added Henderson on Dec. 20.

“He was in the middle of everything in that clubhouse,” La Russa added. “He never was a superstar. He was having fun on the plane, in the back of the bus.”

Henderson died at age 65 due to complications with pneumonia.

“Rickey was — and I’m not exaggerating — one of the greatest players of all-time,” added La Russa, the A’s manager from 1986-95. “I like talking about what a great teammate he was, and the most dangerous player of our time.

“He’d get on base, steal it. The one thing I said, Rickey was a marked man. You had to stop him. Some teams tried to intimidate him. One thing I said about Rickey: You can’t scare him, you can’t stop him.”

After La Russa extolled that praise, Stewart recalled Henderson’s impact on him since their childhood days in Oakland. “I grew up with him and he’s like family to me, for as long as I’d know him,” Stewart said.

Long before joining forces with Henderson on the A’s in the late 1980s and 1990s, Stewart marveled at his athletic talents not only on the diamond but in Oakland Tech High’s backfield as a 1,000-yard rusher. “With Rickey, I wouldn’t miss a high school football game,” Stewart, 67, said. “He was a tremendous football athlete.”

He became a first-ballot Baseball Hall of Famer over his 25-year career, as a 10-time All-Star, the 1990 A.L. MVP, and World Series champion with the 1990 A’s and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays.

Henderson’s stints with his hometown A’s came from 1979-84, ’89-’93, ’94-’95, and ’98. His No. 24 is retired by the franchise as it relocates from Oakland (and “Rickey Henderson Field”) to Sacramento this year before an eventual move to Las Vegas.

Oakland Athletics fans and baseball lovers alike are gearing up for a special event in honor of one of the greatest players to ever put on the green and gold – Rickey Henderson.

The Rickey Henderson memorial is set to take place in Oakland, where fans will pay tribute to the Hall of Famer and all-time stolen base leader. Henderson, known for his speed, power, and charisma, left an indelible mark on the game of baseball and the city of Oakland.

The memorial will be a chance for fans to come together and celebrate the life and career of this legendary player. There will be speeches, highlights of Henderson’s greatest moments, and a chance for fans to share their own memories of watching him play.

As the date of the memorial draws near, fans are encouraged to come out and show their support for one of the all-time greats. Rickey Henderson may no longer be on the field, but his impact on the game and the city of Oakland will never be forgotten.

  • Astros trade could lead to Bregman reunion, Steve Cohen draws the line on Pete Alonso | Baseball Bar-B-Cast

Over the weekend, the Houston Astros were finally able to trade reliever Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs after he agreed to waive his no-trade clause and sign off on the deal. With the trade going through and some money being saved, could this mean the Astros are willing to bring back a familiar face at third base?

Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss whether the Pressly-Cubs trade could indicate that Houston is trying to find funds to re-sign Alex Bregman and reunite him with Jose Altuve, something the second baseman has said he’s willing to do by moving to the outfield to help accommodate the team. Even though the Astros have, in theory, moved on from the two-time All-Star based on the moves they’ve made, perhaps a reunion could be in the cards now.

Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys talk about comments made by New York Mets owner Steve Cohen at Amazin’ Day, which suggest he might be drawing a line in the sand regarding bringing back Pete Alonso and why he may be showing agent Scott Boras he’s done being taken advantage of. Later, Jake and Jordan discuss some controversy in the LIDOM championship that might involve a corked bat, as well as the Washington Nationals doing something they’ve never done before.

  • When are the Europa League play-off and last-16 draws? How to watch in UK? Who could Man Utd, Tottenham, Rangers face?

The league phase of the UEFA Europa League finishes on Thursday, January 30, and it will then be time for the draw for the play-off rounds.

Manchester United and Tottenham are currently in the top eight places that secure qualification directly for the last 16, while Rangers are in a play-off spot.

Ahead of a blockbuster final matchday – which will see 18 matches played at the same time live on TNT Sports and discovery+ – we run through all you need to know about the Europa League play-off draw, including when it takes place, how to watch and stream in the UK, and how it works…

When is the Europa League play-off draw?

The draw for the play-off round for the UEFA Europa League will take place on Friday, January 31 at midday UK time. It will be held in Nyon, Switzerland.

The two-legged play-off round ties are on February 13 and February 20.

How to watch the Europa League draw

The Europa League draw will be live in the UK on TNT Sports 2 and discovery+.

TNT Sports is available across all major TV platforms, offering a line-up of up to four TV channels (TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports 2, TNT Sports 3, TNT Sports 4), and up to six digital or red-button channels (TNT Sports 5 to 10), and TNT Sports Ultimate plus TNT Sports Box Office HD.

You can subscribe to TNT Sports through discovery+, BT, EE, Sky, and Virgin Media.

Who is in the Europa League play-offs?

The final Europa League standings have not been confirmed yet, with Lazio the only side guaranteed a top-eight finish.

Manchester United and Tottenham both look in a strong position to progress straight to the last 16.

A victory for United against FCSB will guarantee them a spot in the top eight, while Spurs host IF Elfsborg and will also qualify for the last 16 with a win.

Rangers have an outside chance of reaching the top eight on goal difference, but a lot of results would have to go their way. They are guaranteed at least a play-off place.

Rangers play Union Saint-Gilloise in their last league phase game.

How does the Europa League draw work?

The teams that finish the Europa League league phase between ninth and 16th are seeded for the play-off draw and will face a team placed between 17th to 24th. The seeded team will play the return leg at home.

Unlike a traditional UEFA knockout draw – where any seed can meet any unseeded team – the Europa League now adopts a bracket format from the play-off stage onwards. There is still a draw, but potential opponents are reduced to two options.

    picture

    Video credit: Eurosport

For example, teams finishing ninth and 10th can only be drawn against teams finishing 23rd and 24th; teams finishing 11th and 12th can only be drawn against teams finishing 21st and 22nd; and so on.

The top eight sides will not find out their opponents until the last 16 draw on February 21, but the new bracket format means they will know their four possible opponents after the last round of league phase matches.

Can teams from the same country face each other?

Teams can face another team from the same national association from the knockout phase play-offs onwards. They can also face teams they played during the league phase.

When is the Conference League draw?

They will face either Gent, Real Betis, Copenhagen or Heidenheim.

The draw for the last 16 will be made on February 21.

Stream the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and much more live on TNT Sports and discovery+

The Europa League play-off and last-16 draws are set to take place on Friday, February 25th, 2022. The draw for the play-offs will be held at 13:00 GMT, followed by the draw for the last-16 at 14:00 GMT.

In the UK, fans can watch the draw live on BT Sport 2 or stream it on the BT Sport app. Additionally, the draw will also be available to watch on UEFA’s official website.

As for potential opponents, teams like Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Rangers could face tough competition in the upcoming rounds. Possible opponents for these clubs include the likes of Sevilla, Napoli, and Lyon, among others.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting the draw to see who their favorite teams will come up against in the next stages of the Europa League. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and reactions following the draw.

  • Alexander Zverev speech interrupted as heckler draws attention to abuse allegations | Tennis | Sport

Alexander Zverev‘s runner-up speech at the Australian Open was interrupted as one spectator drew attention to the allegations of abuse made against the world No. 2. Zverev has denied the accusations.

The German suffered defeat in Sunday’s final as defending champion Jannik Sinner won 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3.

As Zverev stepped up to the microphone to address the crowd, a fan shouted: “Australia believes Olya and Brenda.”

Zverev has faced accusations of domestic abuse from two ex-girlfriends. Olya Sharypova detailed her allegations in an interview with journalist Ben Rothenberg. These were published in Racquet magazine in 2020 and in Slate in 2021.

The world No. 2 has continued to deny these allegations. Sharypova did not take Zverev to court. The ATP launched an investigation into Sharypova’s claims but found “insufficient evidence” to substantiate them. Zverev did not face disciplinary action from the men’s tour.

“From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence and denied the baseless allegations made against me. I welcomed and fully cooperated with the ATP’s investigation and am grateful for the organisation’s time and attention in this matter,” Zverev said when the investigation concluded in 2023.

In October 2023, Zverev was issued a penalty order and fined £380,000 (€450,000) by a German court after being accused of physically assaulting another ex-girlfriend, the mother of his child.

Zverev denied the allegations and lodged an objection against the order. This meant the case went to court. The trial started last May, while the German was competing in the French Open.

The court heard that Zverev allegedly pushed his ex-girlfriend against a wall and strangled her with both hands “after a heated argument”. One of Zverev’s lawyers, Alfred Dierlamm, rejected the allegations as “unfounded and contradictory”.

The domestic abuse allegations were discontinued when Zverev and the ex-girlfriend, whom he shares a child with, agreed to end proceedings days into the trial.

At the time, the Tiergarten District Court in Berlin said: “There has been a settlement between the defendant and the complainant. This settlement is not part of this trial though and the court is not part of this settlement.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Zverev paid £169k (€200k) with €150k going to the German state treasury and €50k to non-profit organisations.

His legal team said: “Alexander Zverev agreed to this settlement to put a quick end to the proceedings – above all in the interest of their child. The settlement includes no determination or admission of guilt. The presumption of innocence remains.”

The tennis player’s lawyers also said the penalty order issued in October is “therefore now groundless”.

Following the interruption in Sunday’s Australian Open trophy ceremony, Zverev said: “Wow”. Others in the stands jeered and whistled.

The second seed waited before the noise died down to speak and congraulated his opponent, also thanking his own team, the tournament staff and the fans. “Congratulations to Jannik, you more than deserve it, you’re the best player in the world by far,” he said.

During Alexander Zverev’s post-match speech at a recent tennis tournament, a heckler interrupted the player to draw attention to the abuse allegations made against him by his ex-girlfriend, Olga Sharypova. The heckler shouted, “What about the domestic violence, Alexander? You can’t ignore it!”

Zverev, visibly flustered by the interruption, paused for a moment before continuing his speech. He did not address the allegations directly but thanked the crowd for their support and reiterated his commitment to his tennis career.

The incident comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Zverev and the allegations of domestic abuse made against him. Sharypova has claimed that Zverev physically and emotionally abused her during their relationship, allegations which the player has denied.

The heckler’s interruption serves as a reminder of the cloud of controversy hanging over Zverev and raises questions about how the tennis community should address and respond to these serious allegations. As the sport continues to grapple with issues of misconduct and abuse, it is clear that the conversation surrounding Zverev’s behavior is far from over.

  • New York Jets News: Aaron Glenn draws Bill Parcells’ approval

Good morning Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets hired Aaron Glenn to be their new head coach two days ago. Now we await the decision on a new general manager. The three finalists are rumored to be Darren Mougey, Trey Brown and Lance Newmark. All three have already completed second interviews with the Jets, so presumably it won’t be long until we have a decision. It’s difficult to glean much from candidates that have never actually been NFL general managers. My top two choices going into this process were Alec Halaby and Trey Brown, so I still have one guy in contention. However, I have very little confidence I or anyone else outside of NFL front offices have enough information on these guys to make a very confident assessment as to their relative merits. All we can do is hope for the best and brace for the worst.

  • Pete Carroll draws surprise 49ers interest as Raiders decision looms

Would Pete Carroll be desperate enough for a return to the NFL to settle for a defensive coordinator job?

It’s a thought that has at least crossed the mind of one of the Super Bowl-winning ex-Seahawks coach’s rivals, as Carroll’s name “has come up inside 49ers HQ as an interesting idea,” The San Francisco Standard reported Wednesday.

The 49ers, with head coach Kyle Shanahan entering his ninth season, want to bring fired Jets coach Robert Saleh back into his old job, but Saleh is squarely in the mix for the Jaguars head coaching job after Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen bowed out of the race — which preceded Jacksonville’s firing of general manager Trent Baalke.

Carroll, however, is now the Raiders’ top option for their head coaching vacancy, according to The Athletic, after they missed out on Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator who just took the Bears head coaching job — a position Carroll interviewed for.

The 73-year-old stepped down as Seahawks head coach following the 2023 season after 14 years, which included 10 playoff appearances and a 137-89-1 record.

The last time he was a defensive coordinator was with none other than the 49ers in 1995 and ’96 after his lone season as the Jets head coach in ’94.

Carroll left San Francisco to follow Bill Parcells as the Patriots’ head coach but was fired after three seasons.

He’d go on to become the third coach ever to win both a college national championship and a Super Bowl, leading USC to a title in 2004 and the Seahawks to a Super Bowl win 11 years ago.

On Wednesday, the Raiders hired John Spytek as their new general manager, someone with ties to Las Vegas minority owner Tom Brady as they worked together with the Buccaneers, where Spytek was assistant general manager.

It’s unclear whether Spytek will have a major influence on the coaching hire, or if Brady and majority owner Mark Davis will be making the call.

The NFL coaching carousel is in full swing, and one unexpected name has emerged as a potential candidate for the San Francisco 49ers: Pete Carroll. The longtime Seattle Seahawks head coach has drawn interest from the division rival 49ers as they continue their search for a new head coach.

Carroll, who led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2013, has a reputation for being a player-friendly coach and a strong defensive mind. His success in Seattle has made him one of the most respected coaches in the league, and his experience could be a valuable asset for a team like the 49ers.

Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders are also in the market for a new head coach after parting ways with Jon Gruden earlier this season. The Raiders are expected to make a decision soon, and Carroll could be a candidate for that job as well.

As Carroll’s future in Seattle remains uncertain, it will be interesting to see where he ends up next. Whether it’s with the 49ers, the Raiders, or another team altogether, Carroll’s name is sure to be one to watch in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • How Doom: The Dark Ages draws from the ’90s Doom games

In place of Doom Eternal‘s “jump and shoot” gameplay loop, The Dark Ages focuses on more of a “stand and fight” mentality, the developers said. If Doom Eternal was like flying a fighter jet, then The Dark Ages is more like controlling a tank, they added by way of analogy.

That means a “flatter” game space, where the old-fashioned “strafe-to-aim” strategies work more effectively than in recent Doom games, with less need to be constantly floating through the air. The developers say they’re returning to the slower projectile speeds of the original Doom games, too, allowing players to more easily weave between them in a sort of first-person take on a shmup pattern. At the same time, your own projectile weapons tend toward the medium to short range, the developers said, encouraging you to take the fight close to the enemies.

While staggering enemies to set up instant Glory Kills is still a core part of The Dark Ages, the developers said the system has been redesigned to avoid taking control away from the player for extended, repetitive canned animations. The new Glory Kill system allows for instant, physics-based attacks that can be activated from any angle without interrupting the gameplay flow.

    The more things change

The Dark Ages developers also promised a more open design, where the usual more linear corridors are interspersed with larger playspaces that let you decide which direction to go and which objective to pursue in what order. And the standard shooting action will be broken up into specific sections where you control a 30-story mech or fly a powerful dragon.

But the core game will still include the requisite raft of secret areas and hidden nooks to discover, the developers promised. This time around, though, those secrets are more directly tied to your power progression rather than just being collectible in-game trinkets, the developers said.

It’s all in service of pushing toward a game that feels “new but familiar,” Martin said. The Dark Ages is still about the same sense of exploration and power that all good Doom games capture. But Martin said the development team is comfortable experimenting with what that specific sense of power is, “especially if the change you make brings it closer to classic Doom.”

But “I want to play a Doom game,” he added. “We don’t [want to] change so much that it’s not a Doom game.

Doom: The Dark Ages is scheduled to hit Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 15.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a modern take on the classic ’90s Doom games that pays homage to the original series while bringing new elements to the table. Here are some ways in which Doom: The Dark Ages draws inspiration from its predecessors:

    1. Iconic weapons: Just like in the original games, Doom: The Dark Ages features a variety of powerful weapons for players to use, including the iconic shotgun, chaingun, and BFG 9000. These weapons are essential for surviving the hordes of demons that stand in your way.

    2. Fast-paced gameplay: The fast-paced, frantic gameplay of the ’90s Doom games is preserved in Doom: The Dark Ages. Players must constantly be on the move, shooting and dodging enemies to stay alive.

    3. Atmospheric levels: The levels in Doom: The Dark Ages are designed to evoke the same sense of dread and unease as the original games. Dark corridors, eerie sound effects, and gruesome enemies all contribute to the game’s ominous atmosphere.

    4. Classic enemies: Fans of the original Doom games will be pleased to see familiar enemies such as Imps, Hell Knights, and Cacodemons making a return in Doom: The Dark Ages. These iconic foes are just as challenging and menacing as ever.

    5. Secret areas: Like its predecessors, Doom: The Dark Ages is filled with hidden secrets and Easter eggs for players to discover. Exploring every nook and cranny of each level is essential for finding valuable power-ups and bonus items.

Overall, Doom: The Dark Ages successfully captures the essence of the ’90s Doom games while adding its own unique twist. Fans of the original series will surely appreciate the homage paid to the classic games in this modern reimagining.
