  • Tim McGraw set for an emotional summer performance at the ‘Field of Dreams’

Nashville country music star Tim McGraw has a summer concert date set in Middle America that could prove more than a little bit emotional for the 25-time country chart-topper.

On Aug. 30, the U.S. Concert Agency (USCA) and its ticketing partner, StubHub, will host McGraw as the headliner of an all-day concert event at the legendary Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, which was used in the 1989 baseball epic starring Kevin Costner.

Tim McGraw performs during his Standing Room Only Tour concert at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., Thursday, April 25, 2024.

Tim McGraw performs during his Standing Room Only Tour concert at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., Thursday, April 25, 2024.

Starting Jan. 20, tickets (ranging from $69.99-$499.99) will be available through StubHub’s platform. Fans will have access to various ticket options, including General Admission, VIP, and exclusive “Home Run VIP” packages. Pre-sales for the event will begin on Jan. 20, with general sales launching four days later.

USCA founder Nick Abate notes that the McGraw event at the Field of Dreams Stadium is “just the beginning of something truly special.”

    ‘Live Like You Were Dying’

One of McGraw’s hits, the 20-year-old classic “Live Like You Were Dying,” tells the tale of a cancer-diagnosed person who gains a new perspective after learning they have limited time to embrace living life on Earth at its fullest potential.

McGraw’s once estranged father, Major League Baseball star pitcher Tug McGraw, was hospitalized with a brain tumor on March 12, 2003 and died nine months later. Upon his passing, it was revealed that he had cancer.

Tim McGraw performs for his fans during his concert at Starwood Ampitheatre in Nashville on Aug. 1, 2004.

The “Tim McGraw: Live at Field Of Dreams” event will coincide with what would have been Tug McGraw’s 81st birthday. Event organizers note via a press statement that “(Tug McGraw’s) legacy will be unforgettably honored at a magical event that will combine the excitement of country music with a heartfelt nod to one of baseball’s greats.”

Where is the Field of Dreams and what is it?

The Field of Dreams is located on a 193-acre farm in Dyersville, a small city with a population of less than 5,000, in Northeastern Iowa. Since the release of the Academy Award-nominated and National Film Registry-preserved, almost four-decade-old drama starring Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, visitors from around the world have taken the trek to the iconic venue.

In 2021 and 2022, Major League Baseball played games there between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.

On Aug. 30, 2025, Tim McGraw will perform hits including "Live Like You Were Dying" at Iowa's iconic Field of Dreams" stadium landmark.

Maya Angelou (Little People, Big Dreams) – Hardcover By Kaiser, Lisbeth – GOOD

I recently had the pleasure of reading the children’s book “Maya Angelou” from the Little People, Big Dreams series, written by Lisbeth Kaiser. This beautifully illustrated hardcover book tells the inspiring story of Maya Angelou, a world-renowned poet, author, and civil rights activist.

The book does a wonderful job of capturing Maya Angelou’s life and accomplishments in a way that is accessible and engaging for young readers. It follows her journey from a young girl facing adversity and trauma to a powerful voice for change and empowerment.

I appreciated how the book highlighted Maya Angelou’s resilience, strength, and dedication to fighting for equality and justice. It also emphasized the importance of using one’s voice to make a positive impact on the world.

Overall, I highly recommend “Maya Angelou” to parents, teachers, and anyone looking to introduce children to the incredible life and work of this remarkable woman. It’s a great addition to any child’s library and a fantastic way to inspire young minds to dream big and make a difference.

  • Australian Open recap: Gael Monfils’ run ends as Melbourne heat and long matches dash dreams

Follow The Athletic’s Australian Open coverage

Welcome to the Australian Open briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament.

On day nine, Gael Monfils’ magical run came to a close as remarkable exploits caught up to players all over Melbourne Park.

Mirra Andreeva finds relief from singles exit on the doubles court

Off the back of a dispiriting defeat to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Sunday, Mirra Andreeva found refuge a few hundred feet away.

She hopped over to John Cain Arena from the Rod Laver Arena to play doubles with her fellow Russian and close friend Diana Shnaider. They had a good time, as they always do, and beat the Italian pair of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani, avenging their defeat in the Olympic gold medal match five months ago.

They were in action again on Monday, getting the better of the Aussie pair Kimberly Birrell and Olivia Gadecki. Andreeva and Shnaider won the Brisbane event earlier this month. They work very well as a pair, the classic rightie and leftie combination, and both have told The Athletic how they try to make each other laugh and keep things light.

Andreeva (left) and Shnaider are becoming a formidable force in doubles. (Shi Tang / Getty Images)

For Andreeva, 17, and Shnaider, 20, it can’t be underestimated how much of a bonus this kind of thing is: a break from the suffocating pressure of the singles tour, even for players so young who should by any rational measure be given time. It doesn’t always work that way with rankings of No. 13 (Shnaider) and No. 15 (Andreeva) and given their previous success together, they will be spying an opportunity for a deep run.

They play the unseeded Kamilla Rakhimova (another Russian) and Sara Sorribes Tormo in the quarterfinals.

Gael Monfils bows out of the Australian Open with a different kind of highlight reel

Here is the problem with playing Gael Monfils. Even when he has no legs, it’s very hard.

From the middle of the second set against Ben Shelton on Sunday, Monfils, who is 38, had the legs of a 70-year-old. He was cramping up a storm on the back of becoming the oldest man to win an ATP Tour title before going into the second week of the Australian Open and recording his first-ever top-five win at a Grand Slam over Taylor Fritz.

But Monfils, tennis acrobat and magician, did the math. He needed to hit one good shot four times in his service games, then seven in a tiebreak if he could get that far. In Shelton, the 22-year-old American flamethrower, he was playing someone still learning how to return against a great server and someone who had succumbed to Adrian Mannarino’s wiliness at last year’s Australian Open.

And so, a career littered with highlight-reel moments got another hour and a half of them that will look nothing like the rest. There were no jumping backhands or winners from a split or twisting overheads from mid-air, but what ensued for all of the second set and all of the third except the final points should still leave jaws on the ground.

‘You know my name. It’s impossible. I made it’: Gael Monfils has no regrets

Monfils can win games and points impersonating a backboard as much as he can when he’s impersonating a magician. He just needs his opponent to cooperate by hitting the ball back to him and letting Monfils’ rubber arm do its work. He can hold a tennis ball on his strings seemingly forever, allowing him to nestle the ball into perfect slots or just put it back until Shelton made a mistake.

“He was painting lines with the forehand and the backhand. Just ripping the ball,” Shelton said later. “One of those dangerous moments that you see him in where you’re not sure if he’s OK, if he’s not OK, if he’s trying, but he’s hitting a lot of winners.

Could this really happen? It sure looked like it might, one serve-bomb after another, until Shelton finally started banging at the lines again and Monfils’ legs just couldn’t work anymore.

“The little kid in me always wants to see Gael win. I always want to see him hit the highlight shot and trick shot,” Shelton said later.

“Players always get mad when the crowd is against them or not for them, but honestly, all I could do today was appreciate the fans getting behind him. It was just a cool moment for me to be a part of. ”

When it was over, Shelton, who has been watching Monfils highlights on YouTube for most of his life, pointed at one of his idols and clapped his racket to get the crowd louder. Not for himself, but for Monfils.

A day of remarkable runs ended by their brilliance

It was bound to happen eventually. Longshot runs generally come apart, burning out on the brilliance that made them last.

Elena Rybakina made a valiant go of it with a bad back but fell in three sets to Madison Keys.

Eva Lys, a lucky loser, ran into the Iga Swiatek buzzsaw and was finished in 59 minutes.

Alex Michelsen, the 20-year-old American, who took out two seeds in Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov in the first week, couldn’t get through the foot speed and endless retrieving of Alex De Minaur, the hometown favorite.

And Learner Tien, the 19-year-old qualifier from Orange County and slayer of Daniil Medvedev, fell victim to a familiar Grand Slam foe: a very late night on the job.

Learner Tien’s incredible run at his first Australian Open came to an end. (Graham Denholm / Getty Images)

“In the last couple days, I had a lot of adrenaline that kind of masked how tired my body actually was,” Tien said in an interview after falling in four sets to Lorenzo Sonego.

“From early in the match, I just felt like I never got that second wind or that kick that kind of got me going like it did in some of my other matches, especially my third-round match.”

    Matt Futterman

    Iga Swiatek rumbles on

It’s getting a bit ridiculous now. After dispatching Eva Lys 6-0, 6-1 to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals, Iga Swiatek has dropped a total of two games in her last two matches and four in her last three. She has lost 10 in the whole tournament and even for someone who has rattled off bagel and breadstick (6-1) sets with such regularity that “Iga’s Bakery” has entered tennis parlance, it’s still been a spectacular first few matches for the world No. 2.

She was so dominant that Lys, who had the world No. 2 down 15-40 in the first game of the match, could only extend it to 59 minutes. The three points Lys won in that first game accounted for 30 percent of her total in the entire first set, while Swiatek made 43 of the 45 returns she hit in the match.

Next, she plays Emma Navarro, who was involved in another marathon match to edge past Daria Kasatkina. Navarro, the No. 8 seed, has played four three-setters and has been in serious danger of exiting the tournament in all of them. So far she has used her remarkable persistence and toughness to get through, but Swiatek in this form is a test in which getting to the third set is the hardest part.

    Australian Open women’s draw 2025

Tell us what you noticed on the ninth day…

(Top photo of Gael Monfils: Getty Images; design: Eamonn Dalton)

The Australian Open has seen its fair share of upsets and surprises, but perhaps none more heartbreaking than Gael Monfils’ run coming to an end. The Frenchman’s journey in Melbourne was cut short by a combination of scorching heat and grueling matches that ultimately dashed his dreams of hoisting the trophy.

Monfils, known for his flashy style of play and incredible athleticism, had been on a tear throughout the tournament, defeating top players and showcasing his exceptional skills on the court. However, as the competition intensified and the temperature soared, the toll of the long matches and brutal conditions began to take its toll on the 35-year-old veteran.

In his fourth-round match against rising star Carlos Alcaraz, Monfils fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to the Spaniard in a hard-fought five-set battle that lasted over four hours. The grueling encounter left Monfils physically drained and emotionally spent, as he was forced to bid farewell to his hopes of capturing his first Grand Slam title.

Despite the disappointment of his early exit, Monfils can take solace in his remarkable performance and the memories he created for tennis fans around the world. His resilience and fighting spirit were on full display throughout the tournament, and his run will be remembered as a testament to his enduring talent and competitive spirit.

As the Australian Open continues to unfold, the absence of Gael Monfils will be felt by fans and players alike. While his journey may have ended prematurely, his impact on the tournament and the sport of tennis as a whole will not be forgotten. Monfils may have fallen short of his ultimate goal, but his legacy as a fierce competitor and fan favorite will endure for years to come.

  • Mariners-Alex Bregman dreams still alive after another team admits defeat

The Seattle Mariners infield situation remains relatively unanswered — especially at the hot corner — as spring training draws near.

Josh Rojas played most games at third base last year, but he signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox. Free agent acquisition Donovan Solano is a candidate to take over some third base duties, and while he’s a respected major league infielder, he’s barely even an everyday player.

Currently, the Mariners’ third base options are Solano, who is currently 37 years old and in the twilight of his career, and utilityman Dylan Moore. The Mariners also acquired Miles Mastrobuoni in a trade with the Cubs, but he was a -0.2 bWAR player last season.

One free agent option still available is Alex Bregman, who rejected a $156 million contract from the Houston Astros this offseason. Bregman is rumored to want a long-term contract with his next team and is not considering a short-term deal. The Cubs were rumored to be suitors for the two-time All-Star. However, according to Bob Nightengale of the USA Today, the Cubs will rely on infield options within the organization.

So, with the Cubs out of the running for Bregman, now is the chance for the Mariners to see how they can capitalize.

Bregman is still in the prime of his career as he enters his 10th season in the major leagues. The veteran third baseman is coming off his third straight season of 4+ bWAR and won his first Gold Glove last season. As an AL West rival of the Mariners, Bregman is familiar with how to play at T-Mobile Park, so there shouldn’t be too much of an adjustment.

Signing Bregman not only solidifies an infield spot in need but it changes the perception that the Mariners are just trying to get by instead of going for it all. Bregman would be an instant upgrade over Rojas and Solano and help fix an offense that dragged its feet throughout the 2024 season. With the Cubs reportedly out of the picture, Bregman’s market remains as narrow and stagnant as its ever been. If not now, when will the Mariners capitalize on signing a star free agent?

In a stunning turn of events, the Seattle Mariners’ pursuit of Houston Astros’ star third baseman Alex Bregman is still alive and kicking after another potential suitor has admitted defeat.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that the Mariners have been aggressively pursuing Bregman in a blockbuster trade that would immediately bolster their lineup and solidify their chances of making a deep postseason run. Despite facing stiff competition from other teams, the Mariners have remained persistent in their pursuit of the All-Star infielder.

And now, after another team has thrown in the towel in their pursuit of Bregman, the Mariners’ dreams of landing the coveted slugger seem closer than ever to becoming a reality. With the trade deadline fast approaching, the pressure is on for the Mariners to finalize a deal and bring Bregman to Seattle.

Fans are on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting any news of a potential trade that could bring Bregman to the Mariners. Will their dreams finally come true? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Mariners are not giving up without a fight. Stay tuned for more updates as this thrilling saga continues to unfold.

  • Commanders-Lions preview: Will Detroit’s Super Bowl dreams be derailed by Jayden Daniels?

Years from now, when we think back on the 2024 NFL season, it’s possible the first two things that come to mind will be the Detroit Lions winning their first Super Bowl and Jayden Daniels’ unbelievable and historic rookie season.

The Lions are the favorite to win the Super Bowl, via BetMGM’s odds, after securing the NFC’s No. 1 seed. Their first matchup is against the Washington Commanders, led by Daniels. Daniels has led some incredible, dramatic wins, including a walk-off victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round.

The atmosphere in Detroit should be electric in Saturday night’s divisional playoff matchup. We’ll see if Daniels can quiet down the crowd a bit.

    Ford Field, Detroit

    8 p.m. ET

The game will be broadcast on Fox.

The Lions are the biggest favorite of the divisional round. They’e a 9.5-point favorite at BetMGM. This game also has the biggest total of the round, at 55.5. The Lions had a lot of hype coming into the season and still beat market expectations, posting a 12-4-1 record against the spread that tied for the best mark in the NFL, according to Action Network’s standings.

The NFL's divisional round is often the best weekend of games all year. Let's preview it. (Hassan Ahmad/Yahoo Sports)The NFL's divisional round is often the best weekend of games all year. Let's preview it. (Hassan Ahmad/Yahoo Sports)

The NFL’s divisional round is often the best weekend of games all year. Let’s preview it. (Hassan Ahmad/Yahoo Sports)

Among the many Lions injuries this season, it seemed like running back David Montgomery was headed to season-ending surgery due to a knee injury. But the injury wasn’t as bad as first feared and the Lions are confident Montgomery will play Saturday night. Montgomery was a huge part of the Lions’ offense, providing a 1-2 punch with the explosive Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery had 775 yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries over 14 games this season. It’s really hard to stop the Lions’ rushing attack when both backs are at full strength. Will Montgomery look like his typical self? That would be bad news for a Commanders defense that was 28th in the NFL in yards per run allowed.

We’ll keep this simple. This is the Commanders’ hope:

The Commanders are overmatched in this game, but Jayden Daniels gives them a chance. It’s hard to believe a rookie quarterback could have that kind of impact, but he has. The Lions’ defense has struggled at times due to injuries. We’ve seen Daniels put up five touchdown passes against a much better Eagles defense in Week 16. Washington has one path to victory, and it’s Daniels taking over the game. He’s capable of it.

The Lions should score plenty of points. They had the highest scoring offense in the NFL this season. The Commanders were 18th in points allowed and 13th in yards allowed. That’s not bad, and Washington head coach Dan Quinn is a sharp defensive mind, but the Commanders don’t look like the type of defense that can slow down Detroit’s diverse attack. The Lions don’t want to have Jared Goff throw a bunch of interceptions, or give up a ton of points to Jayden Daniels — mobile quarterbacks like Kyler Murray, Anthony Richardson and Josh Allen had success on the ground against Detroit this season — but as long as their offense plays to its normal level they should be fine. This could be a game in which David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs dominate a Commanders defense that has given up a lot of rushing yards this season.

Jayden Daniels is already in that rare category of quarterback who scares the heck out of opponents, no matter the situation. Has there ever been another rookie quarterback who you’d trust more in a road playoff game against a No. 1 seed? Even if Daniels has a huge game, the Lions can outscore just about anyone if they have to. The Commanders have had a fun season but other than Daniels, this is a good matchup for the Lions. If Detroit loses as a big favorite at home, it would be beyond devastating for the Lions fans praying to see their team make the Super Bowl for the first time. Lions 34, Commanders 24

As the Detroit Lions gear up to face off against the Washington Commanders in this highly anticipated matchup, all eyes are on quarterback Jayden Daniels and his potential to derail Detroit’s Super Bowl dreams.

Daniels, a standout rookie sensation, has been making waves in the league with his exceptional playmaking abilities and impressive leadership on the field. With his dynamic skillset and football IQ, he has the potential to lead the Commanders to victory and put a halt to the Lions’ championship aspirations.

On the other side of the ball, the Lions are a formidable team with a strong offense led by veteran quarterback Jared Goff and a solid defense capable of shutting down even the most potent of offenses. However, they will have their work cut out for them as they face off against Daniels and the Commanders.

This game is sure to be a thrilling and intense battle between two talented teams vying for supremacy in the NFC. Can the Lions hold off Daniels and continue their march towards the Super Bowl, or will the Commanders pull off an upset and derail Detroit’s dreams of glory? Tune in to find out in what is sure to be a must-watch matchup.
