  • Steven Spielberg remembers 6-year-old Drew Barrymore was an improv pro on set of ‘E.T.’

     —

Even at six years old, Drew Barrymore had a lot to say.

Director Steven Spielberg opened up about working with Barrymore on the 1982 classic “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” during a conversation on Saturday at the TCM Classic Film Festival’s 92NY event. The pair reminisced about their time together on the set, with Spielberg saying he was most impressed by his young star’s ability to improv.

“The camera was rolling and Drew said, ‘I don’t like his feet.’ We used it,” Spielberg recounted at the event, according to People. “Drew made up a lot of her own dialogue because she was irrepressible.”

The director added that Barrymore’s improvisational skills were “gold” and he went on to recall how the film’s screenwriter Melissa Matheson, too, “couldn’t believe the stuff that Drew was coming up with.” Matheson died in 2015.

Barrymore, with the passage of time, shared the same sentiment.

“I can’t believe the stuff I came up with,” she said, adding that she was surprise by how many of her improved lines ended up in the final cut.

The tear-jerker won four Oscars in 1982, including best visual effects and original score. It was a massive hit, drawing in more than $359 million at the US box office at the time, according to Box Office Mojo.

Barrymore previously said on a 2020 episode of her morning talk show “The Drew Barrymore Show” that even as a child, she was precocious enough to snag a keepsake from set.

“I do have the red cowboy hat I wore in E.T. It is in the girls’ room somewhere and reminds me that I was 6 years old wearing that hat,” Barrymore said. “I’m so glad I still have it.”

Barrymore added, “When we’re kids, we don’t think something will be important to us one day; we clean out our room and throw stuff away. It’s nice if parents put something of theirs in their kids’ rooms, so it’s a transference of memories and energy.”

In a recent interview, legendary director Steven Spielberg fondly remembered working with a 6-year-old Drew Barrymore on the set of the iconic film ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’. Spielberg revealed that Barrymore, despite her young age, was a natural at improvisation and added a special spark to the film.

“Drew was like a little improv pro on set,” Spielberg reminisced. “She had this incredible ability to come up with her own lines and reactions that just brought so much life to her character. It was truly amazing to see someone so young with such talent and creativity.”

Barrymore’s performance in ‘E.T.’ catapulted her into stardom and solidified her as a talented actress at a young age. Spielberg’s praise for her improvisational skills further cements her status as a standout child actor in Hollywood history.

As ‘E.T.’ remains a beloved classic to this day, fans can look back on Barrymore’s unforgettable performance with a newfound appreciation for her natural talent and infectious energy on set.

  • Steven Spielberg Says Young Drew Barrymore in ‘E.T.’ Made Him ‘Want to Be a Father’

Drew Barrymore inspired Steven Spielberg on the set of E.T. in the ’80s.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the two opened up about working together on 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial during a panel moderated by Dave Karger at the TCM Classic Film Festival at 92nd Street Y in New York City.

“I think E.T., for me, is the one I’m the most proud of,” Barrymore said, “because it’s the one that changed my life.”

The actress, 49, continued, “There’s no question about that. Everything in my life is about how I got believed in by one human being, and that is the life that I try to honor every day.”

The famed director, 78, added that it “changed my life also.”

“Up until that point — ’81, ’82 — I was just making movies,” Spielberg explained. “That was my life. I was obsessed with telling stories, but making E.T. made me want to be a father for the first time. I never even thought about that until E.T.”

Barrymore quipped, “I didn’t ruin that for you?” to which Spielberg said, “The opposite.”

“Thank goodness, my job is done,” she replied, jokingly.

Earlier in the conversation, Spielberg admitted that he has watched the science-fiction flick “probably more than I’ve seen any other movie I’ve ever directed, partially because I’ve shown the film to all my kids.”

Spielberg now has seven adult children, ages 28 to 48.

“I have seven kids and six grandkids,” he said at the event. “I’ve shown the film to all my kids and a couple of my grandkids. Some of them are still too young, because I’m always worried about them being worried about E.T. and I want to let them know before they turn the corner and are surprised by something, what to expect.”

In April 2022, Spielberg opened up about the movie being inspired by his own parents’ divorce while speaking at a special 40th anniversary celebration during the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival.

The director recalled thinking, “What if I turn my story about divorce into a story about children, a family, trying to fill the great need and creating such responsibility?”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Spielberg continued, “A divorce creates great responsibility, especially if you have siblings; we all take care of each other. What if Elliott, or the kid – I hadn’t dreamed up his name yet – needed to, for the first time in his life, become responsible for a life form to fill the gap in his heart?”

He dived more into how the movie inspired his journey into parenthood at the event.

“I didn’t want to have kids because it was not a kind of equation that made sense for me as I was going from movie to movie to movie, script to script,” he said. “It never occurred to me until halfway through E.T.”

“I was a parent on that film,” Spielberg added, noting that he was feeling protective of the young cast, “especially Drew, who was only 6 years old.”

He said, “And I started thinking, ‘Well, maybe this could be my real life someday.’ It was the first time that it occurred to me that maybe I could be a dad. And maybe in a way, a director is a dad, or a mom.”

In a recent interview, legendary director Steven Spielberg opened up about how working with a young Drew Barrymore on the set of ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ had a profound impact on him. Spielberg revealed that Barrymore’s performance as the lovable and spirited Gertie in the 1982 film made him realize his desire to become a father.

Spielberg described Barrymore as a “little firecracker” on set and praised her natural talent and infectious energy. He recalled how her presence on set brought a sense of joy and wonder to the film, and how her performance touched his heart in a way that he had never experienced before.

The director went on to say that watching Barrymore interact with her on-screen alien friend, E.T., made him reflect on the joys and challenges of parenthood. He admitted that working with the young actress made him realize the unique bond that a parent shares with their child, and how that relationship can shape and define a person’s life.

Spielberg’s comments serve as a testament to the impact that Barrymore’s performance had on him and the lasting influence of ‘E.T.’ on popular culture. The film, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, continues to be cherished by audiences of all ages for its heartwarming story and memorable characters.

As Spielberg looks back on his experience working with Barrymore, it is clear that her portrayal of Gertie not only left a lasting impression on him as a filmmaker but also helped him connect with a deeper desire to experience the joys of fatherhood.

  • Nick Saban shares his side of fateful 2006 phone call about Drew Brees

When many NFL fans around the world think of the New Orleans Saints, one of if not the first player they think of is Drew Brees. A franchise icon, one of the best quarterbacks to ever step on a football field, the man who brought a Super Bowl to New Orleans, and a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee. However, there was the potential for Brees to have never signed with the Saints, and instead gone to the Miami Dolphins where longtime Alabama head coach Nick Saban was running the show.

Nick Saban recently went on ‘The Pivot’ podcast featuring Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to discuss a wide array of topics. One of the topics that came up was Drew Brees, his failed physical with the Dolphins, as well as the phone call Saban had with Brees’ agent regarding how long he needed the physical to not be made public, allowing the deal to go through for the Saints. He made it clear that the physical was the reason he turned away, and also that he did end up regretting it no doubt.

“Now the other part about that is, I actually had to call his agent and say we had a deal, but he didn’t pass the physical,” Saban recalled. “And he said ‘oh man Nick, you can’t tell people he didn’t pass the physical, I’ll never get him signed anyplace.’ And I said nobody will know, how much time do you need, he said like 72 hours, so I never told anybody. Nobody knew for 72 hours, until he signed in New Orleans.”

The intriguing part about this is the response to this post, in which former Saints head coach Sean Payton responded with an ominous post saying, “A little bit missing in this piece…” As of the writing of this article there has been no further context added, however, some have speculated it could be in regards to the phone call Saban had with Brees after the fact regarding the physical.

In Brees’ book titled “Coming Back Stronger” there is an excerpt on pages 106 to 108 (found thanks to a response post) which talks about the phone call he had with Saban after the failed physical. This phone call essentially boiled down to Brees calling in, and trying to get closure on whether or not Saban truly wanted him, physical or not. Saban would make it clear that the physical was the physical, and that is what he had to believe, while Brees thought his response sounded “scripted” to an extent. Brees had already received positive affirmations from the Saints in their beliefs about his abilities and his recovery, which ultimately led to him signing there rather than the Dolphins.

The whole situation is obviously somewhat of a touchy one even nearly 20 years later, as Saban would end up going back to Alabama in 2007 and Sean Payton remains in the NFL to date (though obviously both have had enormously successful careers in their own right). Brees ultimately became a franchise defining player who the Saints still are having trouble living without, and the Dolphins traded a second round pick for Dante Culpepper who was cut the next offseason.

In a recent interview, Alabama head coach Nick Saban opened up about the fateful 2006 phone call that ultimately led to Drew Brees signing with the New Orleans Saints instead of the Miami Dolphins.

Saban revealed that he had been in talks with Brees and his agent about potentially signing with the Dolphins, who were in desperate need of a quarterback at the time. However, Saban admitted that he had concerns about Brees’ health following a serious shoulder injury.

During the phone call, Saban expressed his reservations to Brees and his agent, advising them to consider all options before making a decision. In the end, Brees chose to sign with the Saints, a decision that would ultimately lead to a Super Bowl victory and a Hall of Fame career.

Saban reflected on the phone call, acknowledging that it was a difficult decision for Brees to make but ultimately the right one for his career. He expressed admiration for Brees’ resilience and determination to overcome adversity, and wished him continued success in his future endeavors.

Overall, Saban’s perspective on the fateful phone call sheds new light on the important role he played in shaping Brees’ career and the impact it had on both the Dolphins and the Saints.

  • Sean Payton Cryptically Questions Nick Saban’s Story of Dolphins’ Drew Brees Pursuit

The story of Drew Brees landing with the New Orleans Saints is a famous bit of NFL lore at this point.

After suffering a torn labrum late in the 2005–06 season with the San Diego Chargers, Brees turned down an offer to remain with the team, and opened negotiations with the Saints and the Miami Dolphins. Nick Saban, entering his second year with the Dolphins, was looking to upgrade from Gus Frerotte after a 9–7 debut season, but Brees wasn’t medically cleared by the franchise’s medical staff, leading him into the arms of first-year coach Sean Payton and the Saints.

During an appearance on The Pivot podcast with his ESPN colleague Ryan Clark, Saban retold the story.

“That was the problem in Miami. We never had a quarterback, and we had Drew Brees there ready to sign, and the doctors failed him on the physical,” Saban said. “The last thing before you sign a contract, you go get a physical. So I’m like, ‘This is all done,’ and they call me on the phone and say, ‘We don’t think he can play.’”

Saban said he had met with Dr. James Andrews, who had performed Brees’s shoulder surgery as well as the knee surgery on the other quarterback that the team was pursuing, the Minnesota Vikings’ Daunte Culpepper. While Andrews cautioned Saban that Brees was more likely to fully recover than Culpepper, Saban didn’t think he could go over the heads of Miami’s medical team.

“You can’t call up the owner and say, ‘We’re going to sign this guy and give him all this money,’ … and he might not be able to play,” Saban said. The legendary coach said he agreed not to mention Brees’s physical with other teams, and within a few days, the quarterback signed in New Orleans, where he’d immediately blossom as one of the NFL’s elite players and the greatest player in franchise history. The Dolphins proceeded to trade for Culpepper, who was limited to just four games with Miami, and Saban returned to college to coach Alabama at the end of the season.

The other legendary coach in the equation appears to have some issues with Saban’s retelling of the story. In reaction to the clip, Payton, now the coach of the Denver Broncos, posted, “A little bit missing in this piece…”

It’s unclear what Payton means with the cryptic message, but it adds some intrigues to one of the great what ifs in NFL history. Without Brees’s failed physical, the Saints may not have won a Super Bowl, Payton and Brees may not be Hall of Fame-bound and who knows whether Saban would’ve made the fateful jump to Tuscaloosa?

In a recent interview, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton raised eyebrows by casting doubt on Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s version of events regarding the Miami Dolphins’ pursuit of quarterback Drew Brees back in 2006. Payton cryptically questioned Saban’s account of the situation, suggesting that there may be more to the story than meets the eye.

Many NFL fans are familiar with the narrative that Saban, who was the head coach of the Dolphins at the time, passed on signing Brees due to concerns about his shoulder injury. The Saints ultimately swooped in and signed Brees, leading to a decade-plus of success in New Orleans.

However, Payton’s comments have reignited speculation about what really went down behind the scenes. Could there have been other factors at play that led to the Dolphins missing out on a future Hall of Fame quarterback? And why is Payton choosing to speak out now, more than a decade later?

As the football world eagerly awaits further details, one thing is clear: the mystery surrounding the Dolphins’ decision to pass on Drew Brees continues to intrigue and captivate fans and analysts alike. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Sean Payton challenges Nick Saban’s Drew Brees Saints story | Saints

Former Saints head coach Sean Payton took to social media Wednesday to challenge legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban on his recollection of how Drew Brees ended up in New Orleans in 2006.

Nineteen years ago, Saban was entering his second campaign as the head coach of the Dolphins following a 9-7 season.

Despite the winning mark, the Dolphins went into free agency in desperate need of a quarterback and pursued Brees, who was recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered during the 2005 season finale with the San Diego Chargers.

On “The Pivot Podcast,” Saban said Brees was ready to sign with the Dolphins, but he failed his physical.

“You can’t call up the owner and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to sign this guy and give him all this money … and he might not be able to play,” Saban said. “So, I didn’t want to get in that briar patch with the owner, so I said ‘OK.’”

    The rest was history.

“I actually regretted it because that year, Drew Brees plays lights out for New Orleans,” Saban said.

Of course, Brees went on to become the greatest player in Saints franchise history from 2006-21, and led the team to its only Super Bowl championship in 2010.

Saban said after the Dolphins couldn’t sign Brees, he called Brees’ agent and told him about the failed physical. Saban said Brees’ agent said news of the quarterback’s failed physical couldn’t become publicized because then no team would want to sign him.

“And I said, ‘Nobody would know,’” Saban said. “‘How much time do you need?’ He said, ‘Like, 72 hours.’ I never told anybody. Nobody knew [about the failed physical] for 72 hours until he signed with New Orleans.”

    Sean Payton isn’t buying it

Payton, who is now the head coach of the Denver Broncos after leaving the Saints in 2022, commented on the clip with a simple sentence.

“A little bit missing in this piece…” Payton responded to the clip that “Pivot” host Ryan Clark posted on X.

Brees, who retired after the 2020 season, was lured to New Orleans by Payton and the Saints front office. On a Payton-guided tour of a city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina in 2006, the former Purdue quarterback was given a glimpse of what awaited him in New Orleans.

After giving the Brees family a tour of the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, Payton returned to the city and took a wrong turn down a road that was blocked by a tugboat.

Aside from the emotional aspect of taking on the challenge of helping lift an entire city and region, Brees said he felt more wanted by Payton and the Saints.

“The trips were very different in the feelings that I got from the people,” Brees said, according to a 2009 Times-Picayune story. “Miami was one of those kind of places that, like, everyone would just expect, ‘Why wouldn’t you want to come to Miami?’ Whereas New Orleans was like, ‘We want you.’ Like, ‘We really want you. You are our guy. We have as much confidence in you as you have in yourself to come back from this injury and be better than you ever were before. And not only from the standpoint of the organization and the team, but also what you can do for the city.’”

After losing out on Brees, the Dolphins traded for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who also had health concerns coming into the 2006 season. While Brees bounced back and played the best football of his career post-torn labrum and damaged rotator cuff for 15 years, Culpepper regressed even more health wise and only lasted four more seasons in the NFL.

He played four games for the Dolphins.

In January 2007, Saban took the job to become the head coach at the University of Alabama.

In a recent interview, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has challenged Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban’s story about Drew Brees almost becoming a member of the Miami Dolphins instead of the Saints.

Saban recently recalled in an interview that he almost signed Brees during his time as the Dolphins head coach, but the team ultimately chose to pass on him due to concerns about his shoulder injury. Brees went on to sign with the Saints in 2006 and become one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history.

Payton, however, has disputed Saban’s version of events, claiming that the Saints were always the top choice for Brees and that his shoulder injury was not a major concern for the team.

The two coaches have a long history together, with Payton serving as an assistant under Saban at both LSU and the Miami Dolphins. Despite their friendship, it seems that there may be some disagreement over the details of Brees’ decision to join the Saints.

It will be interesting to see if Saban responds to Payton’s challenge and how this story continues to unfold. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing saga between two coaching legends.

  • Drew Barrymore confirms she’ll be at ‘SNL’ 50th anniversary special

Drew Barrymore will be in attendance during Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special next month.

“I don’t know to what extent, but I will be there,” she tells Entertainment Weekly. “I’m in the Five-Timers Club and still the youngest host.”

The actress, who teamed up with Orlando Bloom for MSC Cruises’ forthcoming Super Bowl ad, doesn’t know in what capacity she’s going to be involved in the show, but is ready for whatever opportunities come her way. “I’ve hosted six times, so if it’s just to be there, that’s enough for me,” she says. “And if anybody needs me, you can put me in, coach! I don’t know what will happen, but I’ll be there.”

Barrymore was only 7 when she first hosted Saturday Night Live, following her turn as Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. She has since returned to Studio 8H to host an additional five times in 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2009, and is one of the small group of hosts in its prestigious Five-Timers Club.

    Drew Barrymore on ‘SNL’.

    Saturday Night Live/Youtube

Looking back at her first appearance on the show, Barrymore credits former SNL writer and cast member Tim Kazurinsky with making her feel comfortable on set. “For whatever reason, they just felt like we were a really good match,” she says, noting that he is also featured in her opening monologue. “He was very kind and nurturing and funny, and he was really good to me.”

Despite being so young, Barrymore doesn’t recall ever really feeling nervous on the show — except when asking Spielberg for permission to do a Mr. T and E.T.-themed sketch starring her and Eddie Murphy. “We were not going to do it unless Steven gave the greenlight and the blessing, and he was there, and he brought Robin Williams with him,” she recalls. “And that really intimidated me, because I was such a Robin Williams fan that I was like, ‘Ooh, now I have the nerves.’” (The sketch made it to air in the end.)

Sign up for Entertainment Weekly‘s free daily newsletter to get breaking news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more.

In general, though, Barrymore says she didn’t feel that different from any of the other cast members on set. “I didn’t feel like a kid at that point,” she admits. “I’d been working since I was 11 months old, and nobody treated me like a kid there, but they were still kind and sweet and familial without being like parental, patronizing, and they just made me feel like I fit in, and I loved it.”

Now, however, she’s amazed that she pulled off the feat at such a young age. “I have two daughters: one’s going to be 11, one’s going to be 13. None of this makes sense to me. They’re twice my age [as a child star], and I don’t see how they would do it,” she confesses, referring to her daughters, Frankie and Olive. “So it is weird, and it didn’t feel weird at the time. It felt so normal.”

It was on the E.T. press tour that Barrymore got her first taste of international travel, which she says “changed my life” forever. That experience is why she chose to team up with Bloom for MSC Cruises’ Super Bowl ad, which showcases the pair going on an exciting holiday together aboard its newest flagship, MSC World America.

“I was like, ‘Okay, so somebody could get on this boat, go, be taken places, [and] be shown the world,’” she says. “And now most importantly, let’s look at the price point, because that’s going to be really important to me…. And I saw the prices, and I was like, ‘Okay, attainable, affordable.’ And then it’s memories you get from travel and trips. So I just thought, ‘Alright, I’m in.’”

The only problem? Barrymore and Bloom had never actually met prior to partnering for the ad. “He was like, ‘Let’s get together and speak beforehand so that we can know each other going into it.’ And I was like, ‘We’re going to have such a good time, because that is the sign of a good person,’” Barrymore explains. “We’ve all done jobs where we show up on the day, and you kind of go, ‘Okay, here we go.’ But showing up having gotten to know him a little bit just felt totally different.”

Their chemistry can be seen in a teaser clip (above) that shows Barrymore belting out her own rendition of Madonna’s “Holiday” at a piano — much to Bloom’s chagrin. “I think we’re companions,” she says of the pair’s connection in the commercial. “Also the juxtaposition of America and Europe, okay, I get that representation, but we’re just, you know, a male and female who are bouncing off of each other, and there’s a mission, but there’s a lightness, there’s a joy.” It sounds like the start to an unforgettable holiday.

MSC World America sets sail from PortMiami on Apr. 9, 2025, with the Europe-based company launching cruises out of Galveston, Texas, and to Alaska later in the year. To learn more about the experience, click here.

Catch the full ad during Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, Feb. 9.

  • Drew Barrymore Recalls ‘Dream Family Falling Apart’ amid Will Kopelman Divorce

Drew Barrymore is getting candid about her divorce from Will Kopelman.

In a cover story for AARP The Magazine‘s February/March 2025 issue, Barrymore, 49, opened up about how she navigated her spit from Kopelman in 2016, following four years of marriage.

The television personality said she knew she needed to get through the divorce to be a better mother for their two daughters, Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10.

“My dream family was falling apart and I didn’t know how to put one foot in front of the other,” recalled Barrymore. “And I had grown up so fast but now I didn’t know what age to feel—I just knew that my life was heavy, and painful and sad—and I sat in that for a while.”

“Eventually, thank goodness, I lifted myself out of it,” she said. “I had two kids and I had to figure it out.”

Although Kopelman went on to get married again in August 2021 to Alexandra Michler, he and Barrymore have maintained a good co-parenting relationship.

“We’ve got an awesome family dynamic that proves that life goes on. Allie is my favorite person. I love her. I love us all being together,” Barrymore told PEOPLE in December 2022.

“These kids have an example of one of the parents moving on and rebuilding another life for themselves,” she continued. “I’m like, ‘Oh, I don’t have to do that now? Perfect.’”

While she shared with AARP that her kids encourage her to date, Barrymore said finding a new partner is not a top priority right now.

“My girls say I should go on dates, but I also know how I felt when men were around when I was little—it didn’t feel safe to me, so I’m probably overcautious from those experiences,” said Barrymore.

The mom of two is instead focused on being a “dream” parent, as evidenced by her slowly stepping away from acting when she had kids.

“I was in my early 40s, and not learning how to be my own healthy, independent individual, how to be the parent I dream to be. Being other people doesn’t help me figure that out right now,” she told AARP.

“And the long hours of doing films were hours I wouldn’t have with my kids,” continued Barrymore. “I wasn’t going to do that.”

Actress Drew Barrymore is opening up about her divorce from ex-husband Will Kopelman in a candid interview where she recalls her “dream family falling apart.”

The 46-year-old actress, who was married to Kopelman from 2012 to 2016, spoke about the painful experience of going through a divorce and the impact it had on their two daughters, Olive and Frankie.

Barrymore admitted that she had always envisioned a perfect family life with Kopelman and their children, but the reality of their marriage falling apart was a heartbreaking realization.

“It was a dream family falling apart,” Barrymore said. “I never wanted to be a part of a divorce. I never wanted this for my kids. But sometimes things just don’t work out the way we hope they will.”

Despite the challenges she faced during the divorce, Barrymore remains optimistic about the future and is focused on co-parenting with Kopelman for the sake of their daughters.

“I have to believe that everything happens for a reason and that there is a lesson to be learned from every difficult experience,” Barrymore shared. “I am grateful for the love and support of my family and friends during this time, and I am committed to creating a happy and healthy co-parenting relationship with Will for the benefit of our children.”

Barrymore’s honesty and vulnerability in sharing her personal struggles serve as a reminder that even celebrities face challenges in their relationships and families. Her resilience and determination to move forward with grace and positivity are truly inspiring.
