  • ‘Cage-free’ eggs driving shortage around US, but there is good news, says expert


    Americans around the United States are heading to grocery stores and noticing that many egg shelves are nearly empty or empty, period. 

    “You can’t get eggs anywhere, I mean anywhere,” Fox News host Jesse Watters said on “Jesse Watters Primetime” on Wednesday evening, Jan. 22. “I can only get the bad ones that just are not yellow and aren’t fluffy.” 

    In New Jersey, said Watters, “you just can’t get the good, pasture-raised, nice, organic eggs.”

    “So Donald Trump, before you settle the drone issue, we need eggs,” said Watters. “And we need them fast.” (See the video at the top of this article.) 

    Eggs are indeed in short supply and Watters’ favorite pasture-raised eggs are even harder to find.

    “The national egg supply has been strained due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza — also known as HPAI or bird flu — which is devastating to egg farmers,” Emily Metz, president and CEO of the Chicago-based American Egg Board, said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

    The nonprofit organization provides resources for “national category-level egg marketing,” according to its website.

    The U.S. alone lost more than 40 million laying hens to bird flu in 2024, said Metz.  

    While the entire country is experiencing egg shortages to some degree, Metz said it is worse in states with laws requiring that grocery store eggs be “cage-free.”

    The states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Washington all have this legislation, according to CageFreeLaws.com, which tracks cage-free legislation by state.

    “Supply disruptions may be more pronounced [among] retailers and in states that exclusively sell cage-free eggs due to impacts from HPAI on cage-free farms, which were disproportionately affected late last year,” Metz told Fox News Digital.

    About 40% of laying hens in the U.S. are “cage-free,” she said. 

    Of birds lost to bird flu, more than half of these birds are cage-free, Metz added. “It’s important to know that bird flu does not discriminate based on farm size or housing environment. The disease is carried by wild birds,” she said.

    Once a laying hen tests positive for bird flu, the entire flock is culled to prevent spread, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  

    “It’s important to know that bird flu does not discriminate based on farm size or housing environment.”

    “When an egg farm is impacted with HPAI, it must go through multiple steps with government approvals before it can repopulate new flocks, a necessary process that can take six months to a year,” further adding to the supply issues, Metz said. 

    Egg production, she said, is “both complex and time sensitive,” she said.

    “What we know right now is that our system is strained — and HPAI remains a clear and present risk to poultry flocks,” Metz said.

    “The volume of eggs sold at retail has been up year-over-year for 22 consecutive months, and we’re just coming out of the highest demand season of the year — the winter holidays — when egg sales increase significantly due to holiday baking and entertaining,” Metz said.

    “The good news is that egg farmers have a lot of experience working together to move eggs across the country to where they’re needed most.”

    Despite these challenges, Metz said there is reason to be hopeful for the future.

    “The good news is that egg farmers have a lot of experience working together to move eggs across the country to where they’re needed most — and that’s exactly what they’re doing now,” she said.

    Fox News Digital reached out to Costco for comment, where customers have noticed recent egg shortages. Many local grocery stores across the country also have seen supplies shrink and prices rise.

    DETROIT (FOX 2) – More than 272,000 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks are being recalled due to a battery issue that could cause the vehicles to stall.

    The backstory:

    According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sports and 2022-2023 Ford Mavericks have batteries that could “experience internal weld and/or caston-strap failures.” 

    Ford noted that this recall applies to 12V batteries in the affected internal combustion vehicles, not electric vehicles. 

    If this happens, the battery can suddenly cause degradation of the battery while driving. According to the recall bulletin, if this occurs while driving, the vehicle could while slowing down or fail to restart after auto-stopping, increasing the risk of a crash. This could also cause hazard lights to not work.

    The NHTSA said that as of Nov. 20, 2024, Ford was not aware of any crashes connected to this issue.

    What you can do:

    Drivers who own the impacted vehicles should receive a letter in the mail informing them of the recall. 

    If your vehicle is impacted, bring it to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the battery replaced for free.

    Golf is a great game because it can be enjoyed by just about everyone. Go to a golf course and you’re sure to find people of all demographics. There aren’t too many sports that can accommodate everyone quite like golf.

    The game also has a way of humbling just about everyone who plays it. It’s impossible to achieve perfection, and everyone from the weekend hacks to the best in the world are reminded of that fact every day. The golf ball doesn’t care who you are when you’re swinging the club. The only thing that matters is how the clubface impacts the ball.

    Watching celebs, politicians and athletes play golf reminds us of this fact each time we see them tee it up. While in their day-to-day life they are titans of industry, on the golf course they have just as tough a time at hitting the ball straight as you or me. But just like you or me, most of them are obsessed with finding that one swing thought that helps them hit it better.

    Actor Rob Lowe recently gave us a great example of just that. And while playing in a Champions Tour pro-am, he got some advice from Rod Pampling that transformed his driving. Check it out below.

    Getting the ball off the tee safely is crucial if you want to lower your handicap. Most of the time, that’s easier said than done.

    To hit a driver efficiently, you need to make sure your lead shoulder is higher than your trail shoulder at impact. This increases the angle of attack and helps you hit up on the ball, which helps get the ball in the air and further down the fairway.

    Lots of amateurs struggle to get the proper tilt away from the target and instead keep their shoulders level throughout the swing. Lowe is one such example.

    To help fix this issue, Pampling gave the actor a simple drill.

    All you need to do is stand in your golf posture with your driver. But instead of standing like you’re addressing the ball, hold the head of the driver on the ground with shaft pointing straight up. Then extend your lead arm and place your hand on the butt of the grip.

    From this position, swing your right arm back while focusing on keeping the lead shoulder in it’s place. When you do it correctly, you’ll feel your lead shoulder staying higher than your trail shoulder throughout the swing.

    “What I like is that you don’t even have to be on the range to do it,” Lowe says. “Frankly the best place to do it — and I say this as a vain, narcissistic actor — is in front of the mirror.”

    If you struggle to hit up on the ball with the driver, give this drill a try. Once you ingrain the feel, it’ll be easier than ever to get in the proper position to hit up on the ball and bomb it down the fairway.

  • Driving instructor advises caution as ice grips Southeast Texas


    In the usually hot and humid Southeast Texas climate, it will come as no surprise that many of its residents have never driven in the snow.

    BEAUMONT, Texas — As icy conditions are expected to grip Southeast Texas roads, a driving instructor is urging people to stay home. However, if driving can’t be avoided try to avoid slippery overpasses and bridges.

    In the usually hot and humid Southeast Texas climate, it will come as no surprise that many of its residents have never driven in the snow.

    “I’ve never driven in the snow all this time living in Texas. Because it’s a surprise for me, it’s hot in this place,” said resident Patricia Roscio Washington.

    Now, an upcoming winter storm will be creating an unexpected challenge for drivers in the area.

    “My recommendation is everybody you know, don’t drive outside at this time. Stay safe with your family and everything. You don’t got nothing to do outside stay in home and that’s it,” said another Beaumont resident.

    Although staying off the road is recommended, many will not be able to stay home when the snow hits.

    “Very, very nervous cause I was supposed to work that day, so I’m very nervous,” said resident Sunterrie Walker.

    Driving Safety Instructor for Courtesy Wheels Defensive Driving School, Shirley Walker, says if you must drive there are a few steps you can follow to stay safe.

    “If you have to get out in it I’m telling you to drive slow. It is not against the law to reduce your speed in bad weather,” said Walker. “Rule of thumb says 25 miles under the posted speed is what’s safe.” 

    Walker says when driving on ice, it is important to leave a little extra space between you and the car in front of you to allow those cars to break if necessary.

    “If you slam on the breaks on the icy road of course you’re going to skid. There’s no doubt about it,” said Walker.

    Instead lightly tap the breaks if the car does hydroplane.

    “The first thing that you should do is drive into the direction of the skid. Do not try to correct your car while you’re in a skid. Do not let go of the wheel, maintain the vehicle at all times,” said Walker.

    Once full control is regained, turn the steering wheel of the car in the direction you want to go.

    Walker says that another potential hazard to be warry of is black ice. This form of ice is notoriously hard to see while driving, which is why it is important to lower your speed and avoid tailgating.

  • Is bird flu driving up the cost of eggs in New Orleans? | News


    Customers in Louisiana and nationwide are dealing with egg prices going up and sparsely populated aisles at the grocery store following the spread of the bird flu in the U.S.

    The risk of bird flu, or H5N1, hit home for Louisiana after a patient here was the first human death from the virus in the U.S., the state Department of Health said Jan. 6. The patient contracted avian influenza after exposure to a noncommercial backyard flock of birds and wild birds.

    Across the country, hundreds have taken to social media to share videos where the popular ingredient and breakfast staple was in short supply at major retailers, ABC reports. 

    The Jan 10. U.S. Department of Agriculture market data report found that egg prices are up nearly 38% nationally in the past year and prices spiked 8% in November alone during the holiday season.

    The average price for a carton of a dozen eggs cost people $3.65, according to the USDA data, compared with $2.14 a year ago. Prices were cheapest in the South at an average of $3.40 per carton and most expensive on the West Coast at $4.20 per carton.

    While Louisiana has not experienced cases of bird flu among its commercial chicken populations, the price of eggs rose due to a diminished number of table egg-laying birds in states and regions that ship eggs to Louisiana such as California and the Midwest, said William Strickland, an agriculture and natural resources extension agent with LSU’s AgCenter.

    In Northwest Louisiana, Stickland said he personally saw the rise in egg prices at stores.

    “I actually took a picture right when I came back from winter break that eggs were over five dollars at the store I was at for a dozen,” Strickland said.

    Bird flu had impacted egg prices in the past like two years ago when a then-price surge left consumers and New Orleans-area bakeries reeling. The 2023 rise in egg prices was also compounded by increases in feed, fuel and labor costs.

    Louisiana generally does not produce enough eggs to feed the demand from consumers, Strickland said. Last year, the state produced around 50 eggs-per-person in the state, below the average amount of eggs a resident eats a year.

    Farm sites typically have a lot more birds for egg production than broilers, or chickens raised for their meat. Strickland said refilling the egg laying chickens is likely to take more time.

    “I don’t think in a month, egg prices are going to drop back down,” Strickland said.

    Eggs may be more expensive or difficult to find in some stores, but Strickland said consumers should not be concerned about the contracting bird flu through eating eggs, adding that the USDA has protocols in place to keep the virus from entering food supplies and cooking should kill the virus.

    “H5N1 usually has mild symptoms in humans, of course this was the first death that we had in Louisiana unfortunately, but we’ve had about 60-some odd cases around the nation that haven’t presented that way,” Strickland said. “It’s very deadly in our birds so we see it in our birds very quickly, and the USDA has a playbook for how to handle it and they depopulate the entire farm. So that doesn’t really go into our supply.”

  • ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Is Driving Up Hotel Searches in Thailand


    The White Lotus effect is already hitting Thailand. 

    Searches for Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, the glamorous setting for The White Lotus season three, have skyrocketed since the HBO show dropped a teaser late last year. According to Hotels.com, the booking site recorded a whopping 40 percent spike in searches for the $1,700-per-night Four Seasons property, which will serve as one of the shooting locations for the upcoming season. 

    “We’re waiting for Thailand to go crazy because everyone knows as soon as White Lotus comes out, you won’t be able to get in. We’re starting to see people wanting to go there before,” Misty Belles, a spokeswoman for luxury travel network Virtuoso, explained to Bloomberg back in June. At the time, the company noticed a 38 percent increase in Thailand bookings. It was also reported that the anthology would be filming around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok. 

    This isn’t the first time that the award-winning series has caused a tourism frenzy, either. Ahead of the highly anticipated season two, which took place in southern Italy, Hotels.com noted a 300 percent spike in searches for San Domenico Palace in Sicily where the second installment was filmed. In fact, the resort in Taormina was fully booked for six months and reservations didn’t reopen until after the entire season aired.  

    The show’s impact on tourism is part of a larger travel trend known as “set-jetting” in which travelers strategically plan their vacations around a destination featured in a hit TV show or movie. Hotels.com found that two-thirds of tourists these days admitted to being influenced by what they consume, a 16 percent increase from 2024. And it’s not just travelers; hotels and travel operators are getting in on the trend too, with curated itineraries and experiences that cater to TV and movie settings. For example, Black Tomato now offers packages based on Yellowstone and Ripley. If you want to travel back in time to Regency era London, the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa in Bath announced last April a Bridgerton-inspired trip to England complete with guided tours of filming locales. 

    The White Lotus season three is slated to premiere on February 16 with season one alum Natasha Rothwell reprising her role as Belinda Lindsey. She’ll be joined by a super-sized cast of new characters played by Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Walton Goggins, Aimee Lou Wood, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Blackpink’s Lisa Manobal, to name a few.
