  • VIDEO: Drone highlights Maui flooding after powerful storm rakes Hawaiian islands

MAUI, Hawaii — A powerful storm in Hawaii this week that left flights grounded, trees felled and vacation beach plans ruined also left a trail of flooding in its wake.

Drone video from the county of Maui released Friday shows some of the flooding aftermath on the south part of the island after as much as 6-10 inches of rain fell Thursday.

HAWAII SLAMMED BY TRIPLE THREAT OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS, BLISTERING WIND AND BLIZZARD-LIKE SNOW

“South Kīhei Road’s history as a natural wetland once allowed it to receive rainwater and manage seasonal runoff from Haleakalā,” the county of Maui said. “Urban development, however, encroached into these wetlands, reducing the land’s natural flood control and making flooding experienced by development more common. Despite these changes, the area retains its natural flood-prone state during heavy rains.”

The island reported multiple water main breaks, affecting drinking supply in some neighborhoods. All Maui County pools, sports playing fields, tennis and basketball courts and stadiums, including the Waiehu Golf Course, remain closed due to storm-related impacts, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Aside from the heavy rains, powerful winds gusting over 60 mph in the lowlands left over 50,000 people without power and multiple trees down.

That included this unlucky driver in Honolulu who came to find a large tree had smashed into his rear windshield.

At least one rock slide was also reported on Maui, with a giant boulder blocking a travel lane of the Kahekili Highway.

Strong winds were seen partially blowing the shingles off a roof in Kaneohe, along the windward coast of Oahu.

Hawaii issued a ground stop for all interisland flights on Thursday for a few hours as the storms raged, with four flights being diverted to Lihue, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.

Boaters fared no better as the National Weather Service in Honolulu issued multiple marine warnings throughout the storm advising of strong winds, lightning and even potential waterspouts.

But even boats docked on shore were not immune from the storm impacts. The U.S. Coast Guard reports a 65-foot commercial catamaran broke free of its mooring on the north side of Honolua Bay in Maui early Friday morning and smashed into rocks, running around.

Maui firefighters were able to help safely get four crewmembers on board to shore. Another 38-foot boat ran aground onto a sand bottom near Maui’s Kihei.

The winds were even higher – reaching well beyond hurricane force – along the mountain peaks. A communications tower atop the summit of Maui’s Haleakala around 10,000 feet recorded a gust of 120 mph.

Check out this stunning drone footage capturing the aftermath of a powerful storm that has caused severe flooding on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The video showcases the extent of the damage caused by the storm, as floodwaters inundate roads, homes, and farmland. The aerial perspective provides a unique and sobering view of the destructive force of nature, reminding us of the resilience and vulnerability of our communities in the face of extreme weather events. • Russia claims nuclear plant targeted during massive Ukrainian drone attack | Russia-Ukraine war News

Russia and Ukraine continue to swap daily barrages, with the prospects of ceasefire talks appearing slim.

A nuclear power plant was among targets during a massive Ukrainian drone attack, Russian officials have said.

Moscow said on Wednesday that the country’s energy infrastructure had come under attack by at least 100 drones overnight. Ukraine also reported strikes. The continuing barrages were accompanied by barbs from the two countries’ presidents, suggesting little prospect of peace talks.

The Russian Ministry of Defence said on Telegram that 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, many targeting power and oil facilities.

Local officials claimed that air defence systems had destroyed one drone that had attempted to strike the nuclear power plant in the western region of Smolensk.

“According to preliminary information, one of the drones was shot down during an attempt to attack a nuclear power facility,” Governor Vasily Anokhin said on the Telegram messaging app. “There were no casualties or damage.”

The Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, the largest power generating plant in Russia’s northwest, was working normally on Wednesday morning, RIA state news agency reported, citing the plant’s press service.

Petrochemicals giant Sibur reported a fire at its oil refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region about 800km (500 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Russia’s air defences reportedly destroyed drones over nine regions, including 11 over Smolensk, which sits on the border with Belarus. Nearly half were hit over Kursk, where Ukrainian troops have occupied several villages for months following an incursion.

Ukraine and Russia have been swapping drone and missile strikes on an almost daily basis, with energy infrastructure a particular target amid winter.

Warnings that the fighting could spark a nuclear disaster have been sounded since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbour in February 2022. However, most of the concern has focused on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia plant, which sits on the frontlines in the east of the country.

Ukraine’s military said on Wednesday that Russia launched an overnight drone attack of its own, resulting in air alerts in multiple regions.

A port in the Odesa region was reportedly targeted, while debris from a destroyed drone fell near a metro station in the capital, Kyiv, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

    Prospects for peace talks

Amid the continuing air attacks, the return of Donald Trump as United States president has revived rhetoric over the possibility of a ceasefire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that his country could hold peace talks with Ukraine, but ruled out speaking directly with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“If (Zelenskyy) wants to participate in the negotiations, I will allocate people to take part,” Putin said, calling the Ukrainian leader “illegitimate” because his presidential term expired during martial law.

“If there is a desire to negotiate and find a compromise, let anyone lead the negotiations there … Naturally, we will strive for what suits us, what corresponds to our interests,” he added.

Zelenskky responded by saying Putin was frustrating efforts to stop the fighting.

“Today, Putin once again confirmed that he is afraid of negotiations, afraid of strong leaders and does everything possible to prolong the war,” Zelenskyy posted on X.

Kyiv has warned against it being excluded from any peace talks between Russia and the US, accusing Putin of wanting to “manipulate” Trump.

In a recent development in the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia has claimed that one of its nuclear power plants was targeted during a massive drone attack by Ukrainian forces. The attack reportedly took place on Saturday, causing concern about the safety of the plant and potential environmental consequences.

The Russian government has accused Ukraine of using drones to target the plant, which is located in the city of Beloyarsk in the Ural Mountains. The plant is said to have sustained damage, but no radiation leaks have been reported so far.

Ukrainian officials have denied the allegations, stating that they have no intention of targeting nuclear facilities. They have called the accusations “provocative” and “baseless.”

The incident has raised fears about the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as targeting a nuclear power plant could have catastrophic consequences. Both sides have been urged to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Ukrainian drone strike hits second Russian oil refinery in a week

Ukraine says its forces successfully hit an oil refinery in the Russian town of Kstovo, around 800 kilometres (500 miles) from the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

Four drones hit a Lukoil company depot, Ukrainian media said, adding that the facility suffered significant damage.

Videos posted on social media showed large flames rising over an industrial facility.

Regional governor Gleb Nikitin said that drone debris had fallen over the industrial zone, and that no casualties had been reported at the scene.

Separately, the governor of the region of Smolensk, Vasily Anokhin, said on Telegram that a “massive” drone attack against “civilian infrastructure” had occurred in his region, although no casualties were immediately reported.

Anokhin said one of the drones had been shot down when attempting to hit a nuclear power facility. The BBC has not been able to verify this information independently.

A mother and her toddler were killed in the border region of Belgorod, which has come under frequent attack from Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod region, said another child and his father were also injured in the strike.

The strike on Kstovo, Smolensk and Belgorod were part of a larger overnight attack, in which Russia said it brought down more than 100 Ukrainian drones and which led the airports of St. Petersburg and Kazan to suspend operations overnight.

It is one of the largest Ukrainian operations of its kind during the war and the second massive drone attack this week. On Friday, Ukraine hit another Russian oil refinery and targeted Moscow during an attack involving a wave of at least 121 drones.

As Ukrainian drones swarmed Russia’s skies, Moscow launched an overnight attack of its own, triggering air alerts in various Ukrainian regions.

The Ukrainian army said it shot down 29 Russian drones over nine regions.

As the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches, the conflict grinds on.

Russia is making regular small advances in the east of Ukraine, edging ever closer to the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, which plays a crucial role as a logistics hub used by Ukrainian forces in the region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to hold on to several hundred square kilometres of territory in Russia’s western Kursk region, where they launched a lightning offensive in August.

In a bold and unprecedented move, a Ukrainian drone strike has reportedly hit a second Russian oil refinery in just one week. The attack comes as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate in the ongoing conflict over Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The targeted refinery, located in the heart of Russia’s oil-rich region, is said to have sustained significant damage in the attack. The Ukrainian government has not claimed responsibility for the strike, but many are speculating that it is a retaliatory move in response to Russia’s ongoing aggression in the region.

This latest attack is sure to further strain relations between Ukraine and Russia, and could potentially have far-reaching implications for the global oil market. As the situation continues to unfold, the world will be watching closely to see how both countries respond to this latest escalation in the conflict.

An influx of unexplained drone sightings in parts of the United States began to make headlines in November, and although authorities have said there is no evidence that the drones are a threat to national security or public safety, experts explain the mystery behind the uptick in sightings.

Fox News’ Peter Doocy questioned President Donald Trump about the drones on Monday, asking, “Anything with these drones — is it anything to be worried about?”

“I would like to find out what it is and tell the people. In fact, I’d like to do that,” Trump responded. He then redirected to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. “Could we find out what that was, Susie? Why don’t we find out immediately?”

“I can’t imagine it’s an enemy, or there would have been, you know, people would have gotten blown up, all of them. Maybe they were testing things. I don’t know why. They wouldn’t have said what it was,” Trump said. “They had a lot of them flying over Bedminster, which is interesting,” referring to his club in New Jersey.

ORLANDO DRONE SHOW CRASH CAUSED BY ‘COMBINED ERRORS’ THAT LED TO MISALIGNED FLIGHT PATH: NTSB REPORT

Photos taken in the Bay Shore section of Toms River Township, New Jersey, of what appear to be large drones hovering in the area at high altitudes on Sunday, December 8, 2024. The drones seemed to be well above the 400-feet level that FAA regulations allow. (Doug Hood/Asbury Park Press)

The drone sightings in November and December originally raised public concerns and even attracted the attention of the FBI.

“The FBI Newark, NJ State Police, and NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness are asking for the public to report any information related to the recent sightings of possible drones flying in several areas along the Raritan River,” a Dec. 3 FBI statement noted.

The Federal Aviation Administration even issued temporary flight restrictions after the large number of sightings, prohibiting drone flights over parts of New Jersey.

“It clearly had taken a dark turn where people had gotten really anxious about what might be in the sky above their houses or above their heads,” Dr. Will Austin, a national drone expert and the president of Warren County Community College, told Fox News Digital.

However, an FBI official later said that of the roughly 5,000 tips they received related to reported drone sightings, “less than 100 leads have been generated and deemed worthy of further investigative activity.”

In mid-December, a DHS official said they’re “confident that many of the reported drone sightings are, in fact, manned aircraft being misidentified as drones,” ABC News reported.

An analysis by the White House, in coordination with the FBI and state and local officials, concluded that “lawful, legal, commercial hobbyist and even law enforcement aircraft activity” was responsible for the sightings, former White House national security communications adviser John Kirby previously told Fox News.

“A lot of people have kind of learned in the last few months . . . that there are a lot of things in the airspace that can be mistaken for drones,” Tom Adams, a retired FBI special agent and the director of public safety for DroneShield, a global provider of counter-drone defense solutions, told Fox News Digital.

FAA PLACES RESTRICTIONS ON DRONE COMPANY AFTER FLORIDA BOY INJURED AT HOLIDAY AIRSHOW, UNDERWENT HEART SURGERY

When the word of drone sightings quickly spread throughout social media and across major news outlets, Adams said he witnessed some “confirmation bias” taking place in relation to the large number of sightings.

“Some of my friends and relatives that are really into the UAP phenomena . . . the unknown aerial phenomena . . . they really wanted it to be drones or aliens, because it fit their narrative,” he said.

Adams believes one of the main reasons why so many mistaken sightings were made could be as simple as a lack of knowledge.

“I think that some people were just looking up to see what’s in the airspace for the first time,” he said. “Drones are still new to a lot of people, and so the rules and regulations for drone use in the United States are also unfamiliar to a lot of people, because they haven’t had a need to learn that or experience that.”

As drone technology advances, police departments have started using the technology more frequently.  (Wheat Ridge Police Department )

Adams explained that, especially at night, it’s easy to mistake another aircraft in the sky for a drone.

“Many drones have white, red and green lights . . . aircrafts at night have white, red and green lights…other things in the sky, whether it’s a celestial body or a low-Earth orbit satellite, they also have white lights,” he said. “During the daytime, when you look up at an aircraft in the sky . . . you can also see other features that help you to understand the depth or the distance is away from you . . . you don’t have that depth perception at night.”

Austin attributed the misidentifying of drones in the dark sky to the “parallax effect,” explaining, “It is extraordinarily tricky at night . . . to identify aircraft, especially when you’re untrained. The reason people have a hard time is there’s really nothing against the night sky to give you perspective.”

Both Adams and Austin said they believe that further public education about drones is needed and may help in reducing the number of erroneous sightings.

As the government, according to President Trump, continues to investigate the first inundation of drone sightings, Austin believes that the public is about to see another major influx of sightings due to a change in the firmware of a major drone manufacturer.

“There has been a significant development,” Austin said, adding that DJI, a Chinese-based manufacturer for many of the drones registered in the United States, changed its firmware this month to remove its built-in geofencing feature, which blocked flight in restricted areas.

“If you were flying a DJI drone . . . and you came to an airport . . . the manufacturer had put a kind of an invisible barrier around the border at the airports. Your drone would stop flying. That all ended on Jan. 13. Now it’s up to the individual user or each pilot to be in control,” Austin explained.

“I’m predicting you’re going to see a lot of drone incursions . . . that’s my biggest fear now.”

One expert predicted more drones will be reported in the air. (Jens Büttner/picture alliance via Getty Images)

DJI told Fox News Digital that it “remains committed to promoting safe and responsible flying practices. The recent GEO update aligns with the principle advanced by aviation regulators around the globe – including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) – that operators are responsible for complying with rules.”

Drone operators will now see official FAA airspace data on where they can and can’t fly, DJI added, and will receive in-app warnings if they are flying near FAA-designated controlled airspace.

The company also said that it voluntarily implemented geofencing in 2013, and noted that the FAA now has Remote ID requirements that serve as the equivalent of a “license plate” for drones.

The FAA told Fox News Digital that its role is to ensure that drones operate safely within the broader National Airspace System, and that it does not require geofencing from drone manufacturers.

The agency noted that it is generally legal to fly a drone in most locations, as long as it’s flown under 400 feet, but there are rules — including obtaining property airspace authorization, safety tests, keeping the drone in sight, avoiding all other aircraft, not causing a hazard to any people or property and avoiding restricted airspace.

Fox News’ Ashley Carnahan contributed to this report.

In recent weeks, mysterious drone sightings have been reported across the United States, leaving many puzzled and concerned about the unknown origin and purpose of these unmanned aircraft. President Donald Trump has vowed to get to the bottom of these sightings and provide answers to the American people.

As experts continue to investigate the sightings, one expert has made an eerie prediction that raises even more questions about the mysterious drones. According to the expert, these drones could potentially be a part of a larger, coordinated effort to gather intelligence or conduct surveillance on the American population.

The implications of such a prediction are certainly troubling, and it is crucial that the government takes swift action to identify the source of these drones and ensure the safety and security of the American people. With so many unanswered questions surrounding these mysterious sightings, it is imperative that the truth is uncovered and the appropriate measures are taken to address the situation.

As the investigation into the mystery drone sightings continues, it is important for the public to remain vigilant and informed about any developments in this ongoing saga. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.

  • More mysterious drone sightings reported in the Northeast after FAA lifts ban

More mysterious drone sightings have been reported in the Northeast in a strange surge after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted its temporary flight restrictions following thousands of reported drone sightings late last year.

The sightings last year, reported in November and December in New York, New Jersey and other nearby states, prompted airport closures, led to arrests and triggered calls from lawmakers and the FAA for more oversight.

The sightings appeared to slow down after the FAA in December imposed temporary flight restrictions on drone flights in New Jersey and New York that lifted in some areas Jan. 19.

Since the restrictions lifted, more reports of sightings from Connecticut to New Jersey have emerged.

Enigma Labs, a research company studying unidentified phenomena, has tallied 650 sightings nationally described as drone-related since November, with the most concentrated in the Northeast.

Enigma reported a drop in report numbers immediately following the ban. But just this month, it received 49 reports in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia — 14 of which came after the flight bans expired.

“You look at the reports that people are submitting. They’re saying, you know, ‘I’m still seeing them, ban or no ban, and they’re happening,’” Enigma spokesperson Christine Kim told NBC’s “TODAY” show Monday.

Enigma shared videos sent in by locals showing lines of flashing red lights beaming in the night sky, many close to one another over neighborhoods.

On Sunday, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., confirmed the return of the drones at an unrelated press conference in New York.

A possible drone flies over trees in Clinton Township, N.J.
A possible drone Dec. 22 in Clinton Township, N.J. Christopher Stadulis

“We have now seen new drone sightings. We’re going to have to look into it,” he said.

President Donald Trump also addressed the sightings on his first day back at the White House, saying: “I would like to find out what it is and tell the people.”

The FAA hasn’t confirmed the new sightings, but said that it’s responsible for ensuring drones operate safely within the broader National Airspace System.

The FBI referred NBC News to a statement jointly released with the FAA and the Department of Homeland Security on Dec. 16 that said the FBI received more than 5,000 reported drone sightings tips in the few weeks prior, with “100 leads generated” for investigation. The agency said that it sent advanced detection technology and trained visual observer to the region.

However, the FBI said nothing “anomalous” was identified among the tips, nor any national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in the Northeast.

“We assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones,” the agencies said in that statement.

Late last month, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called for legislation to regulate drones in the skies.

“While we have not detected any public safety or national security threats, we will continue aggressively monitoring the situation as we call on Congress to pass legislation to give states and local law enforcement the authority and resources they need to manage this evolving technology,” she said.

In recent weeks, multiple reports of mysterious drone sightings have been reported in the Northeast region of the United States. This comes after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently lifted a ban on drone flights in the area.

Residents in states such as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have reported seeing unidentified drones flying at night, sometimes in formation or hovering in the sky for extended periods of time. Some witnesses have described the drones as being larger than typical consumer drones and flying at altitudes much higher than permitted by FAA regulations.

While some speculate that these sightings could be related to military or government operations, others believe that they could be the work of private individuals or groups conducting unauthorized drone flights. The FAA has urged anyone with information about these sightings to come forward and report them to local authorities.

The sudden increase in mysterious drone sightings has raised concerns about airspace safety and privacy. As authorities work to investigate these incidents, it is important for drone operators to follow all regulations and guidelines set forth by the FAA to ensure safe and responsible drone use.
