  • Blues plotting late move for Man City midfielder as Fabrizio Romano drops major update

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a last-ditch move for Manchester City star Nico O’Reilly as Enzo Maresca’s side scramble to add to their midfield options.

As we have reported over the past month, the Blues are keen to bring in more reinforcements in the middle of the park before the window slams shut.

Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo has been targeted by Chelsea but they appear reluctant to match his £70m price tag and it’s expected he will stay at Old Trafford.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have turned to Man City youngster O’Reilly as an alternative and are ‘working’ on a deal ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

He also notes that Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou remains on Chelsea’s shortlist

“Chelsea keep working on new midfielder with enquiry made to Man City for 2005 born midfielder Nico O’Reilly,” Romano posted on X.

“Man City don’t want to lose future control on the player — not an easy deal. Follows enquiry made for Mathis Amougou reported last week, still on list.”

Chelsea are running out of time to sign a new midfielder

TEAMtalk transfer insider Fraser Fletcher reported earlier this week that Chelsea harbour ambitions of bringing in another midfielder and striker before the end of the window.

The Blues don’t have a lot of cover in midfield due to Romeo Lavia being sidelined with another injury, so there is a lot of reliance on Moises Caicedo at the moment.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka, meanwhile, have been heavily linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge over the past month.

Chelsea are therefore trying to bring in a new midfielder before Monday night and Romano’s report suggests that Man City youngster O’Reilly is a key target.

The 19-year-old is highly regarded by Man City but has found it very difficult to break into the first team this season, making just six appearances across all competitions so far.

It is so far unclear how much Man City will ask for to sell O’Reilly in the coming hours but they will hope that he doesn’t become a superstar if he does join Chelsea, as Cole Palmer has done after making the switch to Stamford Bridge in 2023.

TEAMtalk understands that Chelsea are looking at players with more experience to strengthen the midfield too, with Brighton star Carlos Baleba also on the Blues’ transfer shortlist.

However, there is zero chance of Chelsea signing Balela before the February 3 deadline without massively overpaying for his services.

Chelsea round-up: Disasi rejects Tottenham / Chukwuemeka wants Dortmund

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Tottenham agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign defender Axel Disasi on loan until the end of the season.

However, it’s claimed that Disasi decided to REJECT the move to Spurs as he has already agreed personal terms with Aston Villa and has no desire to join up with Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Chelsea, however, aren’t willing to let the defender join Villa as they don’t want to strengthen a direct rival, so Disasi could be left in limbo unless another team comes in for him.

In other news, Borussia Dortmund have emerged as frontrunners to sign Chelsea midfielder Chukwuemeka on loan.

Everton and West Ham are also interested in Chukwuemeka but Dortmund are now leading the race for the 21-year-old.

TEAMtalk understands that Chukwuemeka is very interested in joining Dortmund and that would be his preference over joining another Premier League side on loan.

Blues plotting late move for Man City midfielder as Fabrizio Romano drops major update

In a surprising turn of events, Chelsea are reportedly plotting a late move for a Manchester City midfielder as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano drops a major update on the situation.

According to Romano, Chelsea are looking to bolster their midfield options before the transfer window closes, and have identified a City midfielder as a potential target. While the identity of the player in question has not been revealed, it is believed that the Blues are keen on adding some depth and quality to their midfield.

This news comes as a shock to many, as City are known for their reluctance to sell key players to direct rivals. However, Chelsea seem determined to push through a deal and are reportedly in talks with the player’s representatives.

It remains to be seen whether this late move will materialize, but Chelsea fans will be hoping that Romano’s update is a sign of exciting things to come in the final days of the transfer window. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Rs 5.3 lakh crore wiped out! Trump tariffs among top 5 factors behind Sensex’s 319-pt fall, Nifty drops below 23,400

Indian benchmark indices ended in the red on Monday, with heavyweights Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro leading declines on the benchmarks, mirroring losses in regional markets after U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China fueled fears of an escalating trade war.

The benchmark BSE Sensex lost 319.22 points or 0.41% to close at 77,186.74, while the broader Nifty 50 index closed at 23,361.05, lower by 121.10 points or 0.52%.

The market capitalization of all listed companies on the BSE decreased by Rs 5.30 lakh crore to Rs 419.49 lakh crore.

    Factors

    1) Trump tariffs trigger trade war fear

The decline follows Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China over the weekend, sparking concerns about the potential impact on global growth.

Trump followed through with threats to slap Canada and Mexico with duties of 25% and China with a 10% levy at the weekend, calling them necessary to combat the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the U.S.In response, Canada and Mexico immediately vowed retaliatory measures, while China announced plans to challenge the tariffs at the World Trade Organization. The tariffs, outlined in three executive orders, are set to take effect on Tuesday.2) US dollar at record peak

The US dollar shot to a record peak against the Chinese yuan in offshore trading, and its highest against Canada’s currency since 2003 and the strongest against the Mexican peso since 2022.

Meanwhile, the Indian rupee weakened past Rs 87 per US dollar for the first time on Monday, following Trump’s tariff impositions on the country’s largest trading partners, which drove a surge in the US dollar.

“For now, India is not affected. Therefore, the impact on the Indian market will be less. But the spike in the dollar index to above 109.6 will trigger more selling by FIIs putting the market under pressure,” said Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.

    3) US treasury yields rise

US two-year Treasury yields rose by as much as 3.6 basis points to 4.274%, hitting a one-week high, amid concerns that tariffs could stoke US inflation and delay interest rate cuts. This rise in US Treasury yields is negative for emerging economies like India, as higher US yields typically attract capital flows away from riskier assets in emerging markets, leading to currency depreciation and higher borrowing costs.

    4) Technical indicator

Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities, said, “Today is most likely going to be a gap-down given the selloff in US equity futures and regional equities including the Gift Nifty on the tariff announcement. Immediate support stands in the 23246 – 23267 zone followed by an extension in the 23108 area, with near-term resistance coming into play between 23632 and 23657.”

“Meanwhile, the weekly chart traced a “bullish engulfing” formation inside the Ichimoku cloud, the first time that’s happened since March ’22. Still, expect more than average volatility in the month of February, given that based on two decades of data, the nifty has produced the worst returns in the month, losing 1% on average,” Chinchalkar added.

    5) Jump in oil prices

Oil prices surged following the announcement of US tariffs, which raised concerns about potential crude supply disruptions from two of the biggest suppliers to the US However, the prospect of lower fuel demand capped the gains.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were trading at $73.97 a barrel, up $1.44, or 2%, by 0042 GMT, after hitting a week-high of $75.18 a barrel earlier in the session. Brent crude futures rose 62 cents, or 0.8%, to $76.29 a barrel, after touching a high of $77.34.

    With inputs from agencies

The Indian stock market witnessed a massive 319-point drop in the Sensex and Nifty dropping below 23,400, wiping out a staggering Rs 5.3 lakh crore in market value. Among the top five factors behind this downfall, Trump’s tariffs have played a significant role.

President Donald Trump’s unpredictable trade policies have created uncertainty in the global markets, leading to increased volatility and investor nervousness. The recent escalation in the US-China trade war and the imposition of tariffs on various goods have added to the fears of a global economic slowdown.

The Indian markets, being highly interconnected with the global economy, have felt the impact of these tariffs. Investor sentiment has been dampened, leading to a sell-off in stocks across various sectors. The automotive, IT, and metals sectors have been hit particularly hard, with many companies seeing a sharp decline in their stock prices.

Other factors contributing to the market downfall include rising crude oil prices, weak corporate earnings, and concerns over the economic slowdown. The combination of these factors has created a perfect storm, causing the markets to tumble and erasing billions of rupees in market value.

Investors are advised to remain cautious in the current volatile market environment and to diversify their portfolios to mitigate risks. The coming days will be crucial as global trade tensions continue to escalate, and market participants brace for further turbulence.

  • Bitcoin drops below $100,000 as Trump’s trade war rattles markets — analysts split on what’s next – DL News

    • Bitcoin crashes below $100,000 as Trump’s tariffs spark market turmoil.
    • $200 billion wiped from crypto markets as traders brace for supply shocks and retaliation.
    • Some see a Bitcoin hedge play, but liquidity risks could drag prices lower.

Bitcoin tumbled below the $100,000 mark early Sunday as markets reacted to President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs on America’s three largest trading partners.

The cryptocurrency market shed $200 billion in value, with every asset in the top 100 sinking into the red over the past 24 hours.

The sell-off came after Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada alongside an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods.

The administration justified the move under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, citing an “extraordinary threat” posed by illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis.

Bitcoin, often considered a hedge against economic uncertainty, initially held steady but later plunged as risk-off sentiment spread.

The sudden downturn led to $540 million in liquidations, mostly from overleveraged long positions.

Bloomberg Economics estimates that the tariffs will push the US average tariff rate to its highest level since the 1940s.

Canada and Mexico have already pledged retaliatory tariffs, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirming levies on $155 billion worth of US goods.

Some analysts see trade war tensions as a bullish narrative for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Rising tariffs are stoking inflation concerns, and there is an increasing demand for alternative stores of value. Some investors believe Bitcoin could benefit as a hedge against economic instability and currency devaluation.

“You simply have not yet grasped how amazing a sustained tariff war is going to be for Bitcoin in the long run,” tweeted Jeff Park, head of alpha strategies at Bitwise.

Others fear liquidity shocks and market-wide risk aversion could continue weighing on price action in the short term.

“In the short term, Bitcoin still trades as a risk-on asset,” said Nic Puckrin, CEO of Coin Bureau. “If markets keep collapsing, it could bring BTC down with it and end the current cycle.”

    Crypto market movers

    • Bitcoin has lost 2% in the past 24 hours and is trading at $99,950.
    • Ethereum is down 4.5% over the same period to $3,115.

  • Steph Curry drops funny quip after rising on NBA all-time scoring list – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Father Time has yet to catch up to Warriors superstar Steph Curry, well, for the most part.

Curry’s 21 points in Golden State’s stunning 116-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night helped him leap Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. His instant reaction?

“You see the gray hair?” Curry joked to ESPN’s Jorge Sedano after the game. “That just means you’re blessed to keep playing this game at a high level. I thank God every day that this is a space I’ve been able to live in for 16 years. The names, I passed [Allen Iverson] a couple weeks ago, Ray today — guys I grew up watching in my generation who inspire me to love the game the way I do.

“So it’s definitely special. Shout out to Ray.”

With Wednesday’s performance, Curry has reached 24,515 points throughout his 16-season NBA career, passing Allen’s 24,505. He now is just 300 away from Patrick Ewing and less than 700 from Jerry West for 25th.

Los Angeles Lakers megastar LeBron James leads the list with 41,474 points.

This season, Curry, who turns 37 on March 14, is averaging 22.3 points on 44.2-percent shooting from the field and 40.5 percent from 3-point range, with 4.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists in 31.7 minutes through 38 games.

Perhaps his hair is the only indication of his age catching up to him.

  • Texas drops 72-69 thriller to No. 23 Ole Miss in Oxford

Sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t lie, and the tale it told on Wednesday in Oxford as the Texas Longhorns dropped a 72-69 thriller against the No. 23 Ole Miss Rebels was of a tight game with small margins.

The game data spoke of a hard-fought contest that went into double digits in ties and lead changes, a typically rugged SEC amongst teams with a sum of small separation.

Down by two points and with 26 seconds remaining and a four-second difference in the shot clock and game clock and with Ole Miss intent on denying the ball to star freshman guard Tre Johnson throughout the game by any means possible — including committing a foul at the midcourt circle on a dribble handoff with 5:43 remaining — Texas was able to successfully execute a dribble handoff for Johnson, who drove to his right hand and lofted a near-paint floater off the window and off the front of the rim.

Hustling for a 50-50 ball, senior forward Arthur Kaluma crashed towards the front of the rim, but left his putback so short it didn’t classify as a shot attempt in the game data, leading to a desperation foul with eight seconds remaining.

The foul was committed against Ole Miss guard Davon Barnes, who missed a critical front end of a one-and-one with 19 seconds remaining and the Rebels holding a two-point lead against the Aggies last week. Barnes missed it, and Texas A&M made the game-winning three five seconds later, pulling off an improbable late-game comeback.

On Wednesday, however, Barnes calmly stepped to the free-throw line and buried two critical free throws to give the Rebels a three-point lead.

Working against the clock with less than 10 seconds remaining, Texas was able to produce an open corner three for Johnson with two seconds left, a remarkable look given the emphasis on affording Johnson zero space, but the shot went just wide to end the game.

It was one of a number of open misses for the Longhorns, who shot 5-of-22 from beyond the arc and received a poor performance from junior guard Jordan Pope as the Oregon State transfer finished with eight points on 3-of-14 shooting, including a 2-of-7 mark from three, two turnovers, and a minus-six mark in 22 minutes.

Johnson wasn’t efficient from the floor, either, the central focus of the nation’s No. 12 defense in adjusted efficiency, shooting 6-of-16 overall and 2-of-8 from three, but notching a game-high 22 points nonetheless by hitting all eight free throws for 18 straight in the last two games.

Eleven giveaways with a turnover rate of 16.9 percent for Texas was only several percentage points above the sterling season average for the Horns and well below the sterling season average for the Rebels.

The opportunism for Ole Miss in those situations made a difference, though — the Rebels posted 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers and a related 7-2 edge in fast-break points.

Texas also allowed 25 free throws to Ole Miss, converted into 19 points at 76 percent as the Rebels finished plus-11 in free-throw attempts and plus-seven in makes, certainly another difference in the game for a Longhorns defense that has struggled with opposing free-throw rate in conference play.

On a three-game losing streak, Ole Miss was the desperate team needing to notch a home win in conference play. Texas missed some opportunities and has continued room for improvement, but did enough to win except for making a couple critical shots.

One of the best shot makers for the Rebels, predictably, was senior guard Sean Pedulla, who made consecutive threes for Ole Miss after Texas turned a 15-15 tie into a 32-19 lead over an ugly offensive stretch for the home team.

In scoring a team-high 19 points, Pedulla hit 50 percent of his shot attempts, including 4-of-7 shooting from three, and added five assists. Not only did Pedulla respond to the game’s biggest run, he also made other key shots, hitting a three and showing off his footwork to step into a paint jumper in a personal five-point surge for the Rebels midway through the second half and hitting another paint jumper with 1:02 remaining to go ahead 70-68 prior to missed runner by Johnson and the continued end of game edge for Ole Miss.

That’s the margin of error for a competitive SEC team in the nation’s best and most rugged conference and the Longhorns have proved themselves at that level.

Now the question is whether Texas can string enough wins together to solidify an NCAA Tournament berth, at a baseline, a quest that restarts on Saturday with a must-win game against a bad LSU team in Baton Rouge.

In a nail-biting matchup, the Texas Longhorns fell just short against the No. 23 Ole Miss Rebels in a thrilling 72-69 game in Oxford. The Longhorns put up a valiant effort, but ultimately couldn’t overcome the Rebels’ strong offensive performance.

Despite the loss, Texas showed resilience and fought hard until the final buzzer. The game was neck and neck throughout, with both teams trading leads and making big plays down the stretch.

Texas fans can take solace in the fact that their team gave it their all and showed great determination in the face of a tough opponent. The Longhorns will look to bounce back from this loss and continue to improve as the season progresses.

Overall, it was a hard-fought game that showcased the talent and competitiveness of both teams. Congratulations to Ole Miss on their well-deserved victory, and best of luck to Texas as they regroup and prepare for their next challenge.

  • Ivan Juric drops verdict on £15m striker’s transfer links

Southampton boss Ivan Juric has turned down any rumors suggesting striker Cameron Archer’s exit. Though the 23-year-old has suffered under Juric, Archer is working to match the manager’s playstyle.

When did you last hear a rational club unwilling to rely on its top season scorer? You may think there’s a marginal probability of this, especially in European football.

But, sadly, these are the present circumstances at Southampton. Still, it would be too soon to judge the club’s decision this early.

So far this season, forward Cameron Archer has been the Saints’ leading scorer in all competitions combined. Except that the 23-year-old’s last goal dates back under Russell Martin’s tenure.

With Ivan Juric’s incoming, Archer hasn’t had even a full 90 minutes once. But, this has more to do with tactical changes than anything else, as per Juric.

Ivan Juric drops verdict on £15m striker’s transfer links

As per the Daily Echo, speaking on the Englishman’s situation, Juric said: “I think Cameron is a very good player and a great guy. We changed the style of the game a little bit and maybe he suffered a little bit.”

Thankfully, Juric expressed Archer’s situation clearly. Had it been otherwise, who knows the forward might have been close to a move.

Witnessing Archer’s struggle for minutes at the Saints, he had been on the radar for various English clubs. In particular, the interest from Leeds was all over media outlets.

However, Juric has declined any move for him currently, saying: “He will stay with us and we will work with him. He’s working hard and at this moment, he’s with us.”

So far, it has been a tough month for Archer in Juric’s setup that emphasizes the role of wingers. Understandably, while Sulemana and Dibling have improved, center-forwards like Archer have struggled.

Still, as boss Juric mentioned, the 23-year-old can turn things around. After all, their top scorer can’t become pointless this soon.

It all starts with a confidence-boosting performance for Cameron Archer. Maybe a clutch goal against Ipswich today, who says no?

    READ MORE SOUTHAMPTON NEWS HERE:

Ivan Juric, the manager of Genoa, has finally spoken out about the transfer links surrounding their £15m striker. Rumors have been swirling about the player’s potential move to a bigger club, but Juric has put an end to the speculation with a clear verdict.

In a recent press conference, Juric stated, “I am not surprised by the interest in our striker, he is a fantastic player with a lot of potential. However, he is a key part of our team and we have no intention of selling him at this time.”

This statement will surely come as a relief to Genoa fans who have been worried about losing their star striker. It seems that Juric is determined to hold onto the player and continue building a strong team for the upcoming season.

It remains to be seen whether the player will push for a move despite the manager’s stance, but for now, Genoa fans can rest easy knowing that their £15m striker is staying put.

  • Comic Book Publisher Drops Neil Gaiman Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The comic book company that publishes the graphic novels and comics of Neil Gaiman announced this weekend that it would no longer work with him after a storm of sexual misconduct allegations and that it would halt the publication of his forthcoming “Anansi Boys” series.

The company, Dark Horse Comics, wrote on X on Saturday: “Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works.”

The announcement followed a New York magazine article this month that contained allegations that Mr. Gaiman sexually abused and assaulted multiple women over several years. Mr. Gaiman has emphatically denied the allegations and said in a statement on Jan. 14: “I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”

The announcement by Dark Horse Comics, which is based in Milwaukie, Ore., is the latest fallout for Mr. Gaiman. Television adaptations of his work have been paused, productions have been dropped, and several publishers have backed away from working with him on any new projects. Dark Horse released the first of the “Anansi Boys” comic book series, which was an adaptation of Mr. Gaiman’s 2005 novel of the same name, in June. It was intended to be an eight-part series, seven of which have been released.

The New York magazine article, published on Jan. 13, gave shape to allegations that began circulating last summer, when several women appeared on a podcast titled “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman.” After they accused the author on the podcast of sexually assaulting and abusing them, several of Mr. Gaiman’s film adaptations and Hollywood projects were dropped or paused.

The response has been slower in the literary and publishing industries, where the initial reaction to the allegations, and then to the New York magazine article, was more tepid. Still, publishers have begun distancing themselves from Mr. Gaiman. Several prominent writers have denounced him or pushed for his literary awards to be stripped.

In an internal memo to the staff of W.W. Norton earlier this month, the company’s president said that the publishing company would no longer work with Mr. Gaiman and would not take on any future projects from him.

HarperCollins, which has published many of Mr. Gaiman’s most popular titles, has said it does not have any new books planned from him.

Neither Mr. Gaiman’s lawyer nor his literary agent at Writer’s House responded to a request for comment.

In a shocking turn of events, renowned comic book publisher DC Comics has decided to drop Neil Gaiman following multiple sexual misconduct allegations. Gaiman, a celebrated author and comic book writer, has been accused by several individuals of inappropriate behavior and harassment.

The decision to sever ties with Gaiman comes after a thorough investigation conducted by DC Comics, which revealed troubling evidence of misconduct. In a statement released by the publisher, they expressed their commitment to creating a safe and respectful workplace for all employees and collaborators.

Fans of Gaiman’s work are left reeling from the news, as the author’s contributions to the comic book industry have been significant and influential. However, many are also expressing their support for DC Comics’ decision to take a stand against sexual misconduct and prioritize the well-being of their employees.

As the #MeToo movement continues to shine a spotlight on issues of harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry, it is clear that no one, regardless of their talent or stature, is above accountability. The fallout from these allegations serves as a reminder that actions have consequences, and that no one is exempt from facing the repercussions of their behavior.
