  • Tyrrell Hatton reveals ‘iconic’ edge at DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic

Tyrell Hatton is among several elite golfers playing this week at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic. He was joined by Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Tommy Fleetwood, among others in the field. Thus far, the conditions have beaten down many of the world’s best.

McIlroy made the cut but is nine shots off the lead entering the weekend. Rahm did not even make the weekend after a poor 5-over 77 on Friday. But Hatton sits tied for third at 8-under after posting a second-round 7-under 65.

While a number of players struggled on the greens at Emirates Golf Club, Hatton excelled.

“Felt a lot more comfortable on the greens today. Yesterday, I struggled a bit with pace, and then yeah, from the get-go, I felt like I had good speed and just felt very comfortable over the ball on the greens, and it was nice to see some putts go in,” Hatton said after his round.

But the greens were not the only tricky part of the course. The winds kicked up in Dubai as the afternoon progressed. That made judging approach shots very difficult. If that continues into the weekend, scoring will likely slow down. But according to Hatton, that may be exactly what he needs to notch a win under his belt.

“Generally, I have quite a high ball flight, anyway, so if the greens do get firmer on the weekend if I can hit fairways, that maybe plays into my hands a little bit.

“I feel like this is one of those events that you would love to have on your C.V. It’s an iconic event for the DP World Tour, and yeah, I’d love to give myself a chance.”

Tyrrell Hatton’s career has been quite tumultuous

Tyrrell Hatton has had a very interesting career. He won the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational and ranked near the top on the PGA Tour. However, another win never came to fruition. The same can be said for major championships. Hatton has come close, logging several top-10s. But he could never quite climb the mountain.

The English pro has won seven times, though, on the DP World Tour. Most recently, he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in May of 2024. But his lack of success on the PGA Tour likely played a part in Hatton’s decision to join LIV Golf for $60 million. The move came as a surprise to many, as he jumped ship shortly after Jon Rahm became the biggest signing for LIV.

But unlike the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour allows LIV players to enter their tournaments. So long as they paid fines and kept up their tour cards. That allowed Hatton to be in the field this week alongside Rahm, Patrick Reed, and other members of the Saudi-funded circuit.

Entering the weekend, he is four shots behind Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson. But if the conditions are just right, he may be the actual favorite.

Tyrrell Hatton, the English golfer, has recently showcased his undeniable talent and skill at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic. With a stunning performance, Hatton revealed what many are calling his ‘iconic’ edge on the golf course.

Hatton’s exceptional display of precision and technique left spectators and fellow players in awe, solidifying his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the world of golf. His ability to navigate the challenging course with ease and finesse has earned him praise from fans and critics alike.

As Hatton continues to impress on the golf circuit, his ‘iconic’ edge is becoming more apparent with each tournament he competes in. With his unwavering focus and determination, there is no doubt that Hatton will continue to be a formidable competitor in the world of golf.

Stay tuned for more updates on Tyrrell Hatton’s impressive performances and watch as he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible on the golf course.

  • UK teenager begins Dubai jail term for relationship with 17-year-old girl | Dubai

UK teenager begins Dubai jail term for relationship with 17-year-old girl | Dubai

A British teenager has handed himself in to the authorities in Dubai to begin a one-year prison sentence for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, a campaign group has said.

Marcus Fakana, 18, was on holiday with his family in the United Arab Emirates when he met the girl, who is also from London and turned 18 the following month. He was arrested at his hotel and charged after the girl’s mother found their chats and pictures after the family’s return to London and called the Dubai police.

Radha Stirling, the head of campaign group Detained in Dubai, said Fakana had handed himself in to authorities and intended to serve his year-long sentence in Dubai’s al-Awir prison.

She wrote on X that the teenager was still hoping for a pardon from Dubai’s ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, and help from the UK foreign secretary, David Lammy – the family’s MP in Tottenham – and the British embassy.

She said: “I worry about the impact of Dubai prison on an 18-year-old’s life. It wasn’t easy to find the words to say to him as he surrendered his freedom.”

When asked previously about the case, Lammy said Fakana would have “all the support available” from UK officials but that people should “follow the rules” of other countries.

Stirling said previously that the sentence was an “utter disgrace” and “an embarrassment to Britain”, and claimed “the UK has prioritised trade deals over people’s lives”.

Stirling shared a message from Fakana that said: “Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my fight. It’s been a long fight, but nothing is hard with my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ guiding me.

“I’m grateful for all the people who have helped by donating to me and my family of faith for supporting me.”

Fakana said previously the pair kept their “holiday romance” secret from the girl’s family “because they were strict” and had hoped to continue seeing each other back in the UK.

Dubai has strict laws and enforcement on drugs, alcohol and sex, for which the age of consent is 18. If an adult has a sexual relationship with a person under 18 they can be prosecuted for having a sexual relationship with a minor.

In a previous statement, prosecutors said: “Under UAE law, the girl is legally classified as a minor, and in accordance with procedures recognised internationally, her mother – being the legal guardian – filed the complaint.

“Dubai’s legal system is committed to protecting the rights of all individuals and ensuring impartial judicial proceedings.”

A UK teenager has begun serving a jail term in Dubai after being found guilty of having a relationship with a 17-year-old girl. The 19-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with the underage girl.

The teenager was arrested in Dubai earlier this year after the girl’s parents reported the relationship to the authorities. The boy admitted to the relationship but claimed that he was not aware of the girl’s age at the time.

In Dubai, the legal age of consent is 18, and any sexual relationship with a minor is considered a criminal offense. The boy’s lawyer argued that he should be given a lenient sentence as he was a first-time offender and had no previous criminal record.

However, the court handed down a one-year jail term for the teenager, who will now have to serve his sentence in a Dubai prison. The case has sparked controversy and debate about the strict laws regarding relationships and sexual conduct in the UAE, especially when it involves foreigners.

The British Embassy in Dubai has confirmed that they are providing consular assistance to the teenager and his family. It serves as a reminder to all visitors and residents in Dubai to be aware of and respect the laws and cultural norms of the country to avoid finding themselves in a similar situation.

Briton, 18, jailed in Dubai over sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana had been staying in temporary accommodation in Dubai since September

An 18-year-old Briton convicted of having sex with an underage 17-year-old British girl in Dubai has handed himself in to authorities there to begin a one-year jail sentence, a charity says.

Marcus Fakana, of Tottenham, north London, began a secretive romance in September with another Londoner, who is now 18, while both were on holiday with their families.

After returning home and seeing pictures and chats between the pair, the girl’s mother reported the relationship to Dubai police, who arrested Fakana at his hotel. Sex with someone under 18 is illegal in Dubai.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was supporting a British man in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Fakana handed himself in to Dubai’s Al Awir prison, according to the UK-based campaign group and charity Detained in Dubai.

He had been on bail and staying in temporary accommodation in Dubai since his arrest in September. His parents had to return to London to resume their jobs in a warehouse and as a cleaner to help pay for their son’s accommodation.

    ‘He is very brave’

Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, which helps foreigners abroad and is an international authority on UAE law, said she had spoken with Fakana, who told her he would focus on his physical and mental health while in jail.

“Marcus is hopeful that in beginning his ordeal today, he will be home sooner than he would be if he appealed,” she said.

“It is difficult to have the right words to tell a young man turning himself in for a year in Dubai prison.

“He’s very brave and kind and I truly hope he will be home soon.”

Fakana’s family is being supported by the charity, which said his parents were hoping for a royal pardon and commuted sentence.

They are also pushing the UK government and Foreign Secretary David Lammy “for assistance”.

A Downing Street spokesman said earlier this month: “The prime minister recognises it’s an extremely distressing situation for Marcus and his family.”

Previously, the charity explained both teenagers were on holiday with their parents in the UAE from the UK, where the age of consent is 16.

Fakana had told his family about the romance but the girl had not told hers.

The government of Dubai previously said: “Under UAE law, the girl is legally classified as a minor and, in accordance with procedures recognised internationally, her mother – being the legal guardian – filed the complaint.”

It added: “Dubai’s legal system is committed to protecting the rights of all individuals and ensuring impartial judicial proceedings.”

A young British man finds himself in a nightmarish situation as he is sentenced to jail in Dubai for having consensual sex with a 17-year-old girl. The 18-year-old, who was on holiday in the UAE, now faces a harsh punishment for a crime that would be considered legal in many other countries.

This case highlights the stark differences in laws and cultural norms between countries, and serves as a cautionary tale for travelers who may not be aware of the strict laws in certain regions. It also raises questions about the fairness and appropriateness of the punishment handed down to the young man.

As the case unfolds, it brings to light the importance of understanding and respecting the laws and customs of the places we visit, as well as the potential consequences of not doing so. It serves as a reminder that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and that travelers should always be aware of the legal implications of their actions in foreign countries.

  • Dubai chocolate berry cup at Bryant Park draws long lines

Dubai chocolate berry cup at Bryant Park draws long lines

    It’s berry nuts.

New Yorkers are waiting as long as two hours in the cold for a $25 cup of strawberries, chocolate and pistachio cream.

At the bustling Bryant Park Winter Village, the Strawberro booth is drawing huge lines for its berry desserts. It’s flagship offering is the $25 “Dubai Chocolate” with berries, melted Belgian chocolate, a pistachio cream imported from Italy, chopped pistachios and crunchy bits of kataiki pastry — crispy phyllo dough that’s popular in Middle Eastern desserts.

It has “the perfect balance of sweetness and freshness” with a “a contrast of liquid and crunchy elements,” said Vasily Malyshev, 33, who started the booth with his wife, Anna, 32.

It’s the first holiday season for the Strawberro booth, after debuting for a few weeks at the Bryant Park spring market, and it’s been a huge hit after going viral on TikTok and Instagram.

“It’s been absolutely amazing,” said Vasily, who also works in software. “We definitely did not expect all the virality.”

The booth, which is the only location for Strawberro, is tucked away on the market’s south corridor, next to the carousel and the Gnocchi on 9th stall, which is also quite popular.

The average wait time is about 40 minutes according to the couple, but on weekends it can stretch two hours. A sign declares “Strawberro line starts here, sorry for the wait,” and the trail of hungry visitors curls around various stanchions, much like the security line at JFK on a hellish day.

Around midday last Thursday, a crowd was waiting about 40 minutes for cups of chocolate and berries. Aside from the “Dubai chocolate,” the menu also includes simpler options such as the $15 “dark choco” (berries and dark chocolate) and the “ruby dream,” also $15 and featuring Belgian chocolate made from pink cacao pods that impart a slightly sour flavor.

The booth’s signature offering is the $25 “Dubai Chocolate” with pistachio cream and milk chocolate. Brian Zak/NY Post

People rushed past, noted the line and muttered “is it worth it?” and “it’s just strawberries” under their breath. Vasily observed a woman brazenly walk up to those at the front of the line and offer to Venmo someone who would place an order for her. He said they’ve also had people offer Strawberro’s workers $60 in cash to skip the line.

Taylor Sciandra, an 18-year-old college student from Buffalo, said she didn’t hesitate to try the Dubai chocolate — despite the wait and price tag — after seeing it on social media.

“It looked so good,” she said. Her verdict? “I like the crunch.”

A sign marks the start of the long, snaking line for Strawberro. Brian Zak/NY Post

Sammy Kramer and Evelyn Kuroski, both 15, also said it was worth the hype after trying it.

Rachel Clair, a 52-year-old from Niagara Falls, Canada, waited over an hour. “We came just for this,” she said.

The Malyshevs, who live in Bergen County, wouldn’t say what their profit margin is on the $25 cup of strawberries. But Anna noted that the Winer Village takes a significant portion of revenue and that ingredients such as berries and chocolate have seen huge increases in cost due to supply issues.

Taylor Sciandra loved the treat’s crunchy elements. Brian Zak/NY Post

“We just use the best ingredients,” said Anna, who has long worked in food and also has a booth dedicated to whoopie pies.

Strawberro is part of a larger “Dubai chocolate” craze.

Sarah Hamouda, the founder of Dubai-based Fix Dessert Chocolatier, is credited with inventing the trend, which has been reinterpreted by sweets purveyors around the globe.

Rachel Clair opted for the Milk Chocolate cup, which is also quite popular. Brian Zak/NY Post

UAE-based influencer Maria Vehera posted an ASMR video of herself eating one of Fix’s pistachio cream-and-kataifi-filled milk chocolate bars to TikTok in December 2023. It’s since attracted more than 100 million views.

TikTok and Instagram each have over 147,000 posts with the hashtag #dubaichocolate.

In the city, the Nuts Factory, which has various locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, also sells Dubai chocolate. A pack of two large bars goes for $49.99 on their website, and they also do a cup of strawberries for $17.99.

When Strawberro opened for the season, it had one or two people staffing the booth at a time. Now, there are typically six people working the busy booth. Brian Zak/NY Post

Both have been quite popular. “It’s been amazing,” a spokesperson for the store told The Post.

After their stint at Bryant Park ends on January 5, the Malyshevs are looking at opening a brick-and-mortar Strawberro in SoHo, the West Village, Chelsea Market or Hudson Yards. But first, the young couple, who have a new baby at home, needs a moment to catch their breath.

“It’s been an absolutely crazy couple months,” said Vasily.

If you’re a chocolate lover, then you’ll want to make your way to Bryant Park in New York City for the Dubai chocolate berry cup. This delectable treat has been drawing long lines of eager customers, all clamoring to get their hands on this indulgent dessert.

Made with rich, creamy chocolate and topped with fresh berries, the Dubai chocolate berry cup is a true delight for the taste buds. Whether you’re a local or just visiting the city, this sweet treat is definitely worth the wait in line.

So if you find yourself in Bryant Park and craving something sweet, be sure to check out the Dubai chocolate berry cup stand. Your taste buds will thank you!
