  • UCLA Bruins vs. Oregon Ducks: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

    Halftime Report

UCLA and Oregon have shown up to the game, but their offenses sure haven’t. UCLA has a bit of a cushion as they currently lead Oregon 40-26.

UCLA entered the match having won four straight and they’re just one half away from another. Will they make it five, or will Oregon step up and spoil it? We’ll know soon.

    What to Know

Oregon and UCLA are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but not for long. Both will face off in a Big Ten battle at 10:30 p.m. ET on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion. Coming off a loss in a game the Ducks were expected to win, they now face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.

Last Saturday, Oregon came up short against Minnesota and fell 77-69.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Brandon Angel, who earned 18 points in addition to five rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in threes (three). Another player making a difference was TJ Bamba, who went 5 for 8 en route to 15 points plus two steals.

Oregon struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in January of 2024.

Meanwhile, UCLA waltzed into their contest on Monday with three straight wins… but they left with four. They came out on top against the Trojans by a score of 82-76.

UCLA’s success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Aday Mara led the charge by dropping a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mara is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he’s now posted two or more in the last three games he’s played. Eric Dailey Jr. was another key player, going 6 for 10 en route to 16 points plus six rebounds and two steals.

Oregon’s loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 16-4. As for UCLA, their victory bumped their record up to 15-6.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Oregon hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 77.9 points per game. However, it’s not like UCLA struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 75.9. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

While only Oregon took care of their fans the last time they played, neither team managed to cover. Looking forward, UCLA is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 4.5 points. They might be worth a quick bet since they’ve covered the spread the last six times they’ve played Oregon.

    Odds

UCLA is a 4.5-point favorite against Oregon, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Bruins as a 3.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 140.5 points.

  • Quack of Dawn: Ducks Morning Report – 01/27

After a day off on Sunday which helped this writer avoid another rainy drive to Orange County, the Ducks were back on the ice for a Monday practice. They’ll fly to The Emerald City shortly ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Kraken.

It appears that lines will be unchanged for Tuesday’s game, with Olen Zellweger and Ross Johnston continuing to skate as the extras. Sure, don’t change anything while the wins are rolling in, but this would be the third consecutive game that Zellweger has been a healthy scratch. He has been a healthy scratch in eight of the last 15 games. Will be something to query head coach Greg Cronin about at morning skate if these lines hold for Tuesday’s game.

McTavish named Second Star of the Week

Mason McTavish was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week after a stellar set of games against the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators.

He scored five goals and came agonizingly close to a hat trick in the games against the Penguins and the Predators. He also has seven points in his last seven games.

“It’s super cool,” McTavish said of receiving the honor, the second Star of the Week recognization of his NHL career. “Credit to my teammates who have all been looking for me recently it feels like—especially lately—trying to get the hat trick. It shows how much they support me and it’s cool to be a part of that.”

McTavish’s recent success has coincided with two wins for the Ducks, a much-needed reprieve after the Ducks had gone 1-4-1 on their six-game road trip and then lost 5-2 to the Panthers at home.

“I think we’re scoring more,” McTavish said. “Just kind of trust in the process. I feel like I’ve said before, I’ve been getting a lot of chances, haven’t really scored. It’s nice to see some go in recently.”

Zegras’ return has reinvigorated the team

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the recent burst of offense has come just after Trevor Zegras returned from a nearly six-week absence. The creativity he possesses is an element that was sorely missed during his absence.

“He’s not like a fast-paced, hunting player,” Cronin said. “He’s more of a playmaker, so he likes to slow things down. He’s one of the few guys that we have that his IQ is driven in a way that he’s trying to bait people in to create open ice to slip pucks into space that the attackers are coming into.”

A perfect example of this came in the Ducks’ most recent game, where Zegras came down the left wing and dropped a pass back into space for Jacob Trouba to skate into.

Zegras’ impact doesn’t come solely on the ice. His energy and enthusiasm rubs off on his teammates and helps create a positive environment, even when things may not be going so well.

“He’s awesome,” McTavish said. “Kind of keeps the mood light and on the ice, he is a great player and helps our team. We’re lucky to have him back.

“He’s probably my best friend on the team, so it sucked when he was out. I think for everybody, but I feel like maybe especially more for me. I kind of do everything with that guy and it’s really great to have him back.”

  • Preview: Ducks Seek Third Straight Win Tonight in Seattle

Mason McTavish’s line has led the way of late, as the 21-year-old centerman earned the NHL’s Second Star of the Week honors with back-to-back multi-goal performances.

“He’s amazing,” Zegras said of McTavish. “It’s nice to see them go in for him. We’ve beenm calling him ‘iron sights’ because he’s hit a lot of posts and crossbars, but we’re going to get him that third one (for a first career hat trick). It’s coming, I can feel it.”

“When a [scorer] like McTavish starts scoring, the whole team picks up right there,” Cronin said. “There’s more pace to the game, more confidence around the puck. I thought he was terrific.”

Anaheim now visits the Emerald City for a matchup against a Seattle squad also scrapping to keep pace in the Western Conference playoff picture while struggling to find consistency. The Kraken have earned a a 5-5-0 mark in their last 10 games, and last night fell 4-2 to the first-place Edmonton Oilers in the return of star Connor McDavid from suspension.

“I think it’s a game of momentum, especially with the firepower they have,” Seattle forward John Hayden told the team’s Geoff Baker. “And in the second (period), I think some turnovers — myself included — fed them a bit.”

Seattle earned four power-play opportunities in the loss but could not connect on the man advantage, ultimately a key factor in the result for head coach, and former Mighty Duck, Dan Bylsma.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Bylsma said. “You want your power play to provide a goal and provide a spark, and it wasn’t there. There’s no other way to say it, the power play didn’t do that and that was a dent in the game.”

Seattle (22-26-3, 47 points) sits sixth in the Pacific Division, eight points back of a Wild Card spot.

The Anaheim Ducks are gearing up for a showdown tonight against the Seattle Kraken as they aim to secure their third straight win. With victories over the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames in their last two games, the Ducks are riding a wave of momentum and looking to continue their winning streak.

The team’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, with players like Troy Terry, Adam Henrique, and Sonny Milano leading the charge. Goalie John Gibson has also been a standout, making key saves to keep the Ducks in the game.

On the other side, the Kraken are looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers and will be hungry for a win on their home ice.

With both teams hungry for a victory, tonight’s game promises to be an exciting matchup. Will the Ducks continue their winning ways, or will the Kraken come out on top? Be sure to tune in tonight to find out!

  • Preview: Ducks Take Aim at Preds Tonight at Honda Center

From one veteran opponent to another, the Ducks now host a suddenly red-hot Predators team determined to shake off a slow start and climb back into the playoff race. The Preds visit Orange County with wins in five straight games, most recently a pair of high-scoring victories, 6-5 and 7-5, over San Jose in a home-and-home set.

“We’re finding ways to win in games where early in the season, we didn’t,” longtime Nashville winger Filip Forsberg told the team’s Beat Reporter Brooks Bratten. “And certainly the effort is there. But there’s definitely things…we can tighten up, but we’ll take the positive. Excited for the win and get ready for the next game.”

Added head coach Andrew Brunette, “We’re believing. We seem to get tighter as a group every game. We’ve got some things to clean up. We’re still trying to stack some things…I think we’re starting to understand when we do certain things and play a certain way, it’s fun to play, it’s good to play. We’re getting rewarded for it, so we’ll keep chipping away where we are and fight to keep that feeling.”

Nashville was the NHL’s most aggressive team last season, adding free agents Jonathan Marchessault, Steven Stamkos and Brady Skjei on long-term contracts. Stamkos and Marchessault now skate on the club’s top line with Forsberg, and each are among the team’s top-four scoring leaders this season. Stamkos, a two-time champion with Tampa Bay, has scored five goals in his last five games.

The Predators (18-22-7, 43 points) sit seventh in the Central Division, 10 points behind a playoff position.

The Anaheim Ducks are gearing up to face off against the Nashville Predators tonight at the Honda Center. Both teams are coming off of strong performances in their last games and are looking to continue their winning streaks.

The Ducks have been on a roll lately, with key players like Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry leading the charge. They will need to bring their A-game against a tough Predators team that boasts a strong defensive lineup and a potent offense.

Meanwhile, the Predators will be looking to capitalize on their recent success and secure another win on the road. With players like Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg leading the charge, the Preds will be a formidable opponent for the Ducks.

This matchup promises to be an exciting and closely contested game, with both teams hungry for a win. Be sure to tune in tonight to see which team comes out on top in this thrilling showdown at the Honda Center.

The No. 15 Ducks, fresh off a split at home in which they were edged by Purdue then overcame Washington, are ready to hit the road once again, a place where they haven’t yet faltered once this season.

The Golden Gophers, who are sitting at the bottom of the conference, haven’t shown a whole lot of promise until this past week, when they knocked off No. 21 Michigan and followed that up with a close win over Iowa. This week they not only welcome in the Ducks, but No. 8 Michigan State as well.

The Ducks and Gophers have hardly ever met on the hardwood before now, only four times in fact, splitting the matchups 2-2. The last time they played was in December of 2002 when Oregon’s two famous Lukes helped lead the Ducks to victory 90-81.

  • Long Island farm forced to euthanize more than 100,000 ducks after bird flu detected

A commercial poultry farm on Long Island, New York, is being forced to kill thousands of ducks after health officials detected cases of bird flu.

The owner of Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue — about 66 miles west of New York City — reportedly first saw signs that his flock was ill last week, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health. Tests confirmed the detection of bird flu on Jan. 17.

The farm, which is the last commercial duck farm on Long Island, was forced to cease operations and begin the process of euthanizing its entire flock of more than 100,000 ducks, according to ABC-owned station WABC. The process will reportedly take a little over a week.

“Unfortunately, when you have a situation like this where you have a flock that’s infected, the remedy is to put the entire flock down,” Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott told WABC.

As of Friday, no farm workers were reported ill and health officials have begun interviewing potentially exposed workers as well as providing testing and preventive medications to high-risk individuals, according to the release from the health department. Pigott told WABC the medications include Tamiflu and Tamivir.

In this undated stock photo, ducks are seen standing in a farm.

    STOCK PHOTO/Adobe

The health department said it is also providing education to the farm owner on preventative measures such as proper hand hygiene and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

“The risk to public health is minimal as the virus at this point is not transmissible among humans,” Pigott said in a statement. “A full investigation is underway because there is some potential for transmission of the H5N1 bird flu from the infected birds to individual farm workers who had high-risk exposures.”

SCDH did not immediately reply to ABC News’ request for comment. ABC News left a message requesting comment with Crescent Duck Farm.

Bird flu, or avian influenza, has been causing outbreaks in poultry and dairy cows in the U.S. with recent human cases among poultry and dairy workers.

Human cases have been diagnosed across the country since April 2024, with 67 confirmed in 10 states so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of Thursday, no human cases have been reported in New York.

Most human cases have been mild with patients fully recovering. So far, just one death has been recorded in Louisiana in a patient over age 65 who had underlying medical conditions.

The CDC and other public health officials say there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission and the risk to the general public is low.

Recently, a devastating situation unfolded at a Long Island farm as more than 100,000 ducks had to be euthanized after the detection of bird flu. This heartbreaking decision was made to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus and protect other livestock on the farm.

The farm, located in Suffolk County, had been monitoring the health of their ducks closely when several started showing symptoms of avian influenza. Testing confirmed the presence of the virus, prompting swift action to prevent further spread.

The loss of so many animals is a devastating blow to the farm and its workers. It serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of disease outbreaks in livestock. The farm is now working closely with authorities to ensure proper containment and biosecurity measures are in place to prevent future outbreaks.

Our thoughts are with the farmers and workers who are dealing with this difficult situation. Let us all come together to support them during this challenging time.

  • 100,000 Ducks to Be Killed After Bird Flu Strikes Long Island Farm

Long Island duck is a delicacy savored across the country for its mild flavor and tender meat. But its future has been cast into doubt after the last duck farm on the island was quarantined for an outbreak of bird flu.

The farm, Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue, N.Y., must now kill its entire flock of almost 100,000 ducks and may go out of business, its owner said in an interview. The highly infectious virus, H5NI avian flu, was detected last week.

The Suffolk County Health Department said that the farm was under quarantine and that state and federal agriculture officials were on site to conduct “depopulating, cleaning and disinfection activities” at the facility, which supplies ducks to many restaurants in New York City and elsewhere. Similar outbreaks have led to the culling of herds and flocks in more than a dozen states.

Doug Corwin, who is part of the fourth generation of his family to operate Crescent Duck Farm, which has been open since 1908, said on Thursday that the future of his business was uncertain.

“I have done this all my life, and we are the last of this industry,” he said. “It is gut-wrenching. You work your whole life for something, and then one day everything is gone.”

Health officials said the risk to humans remained low. “The virus at this point is not transmissible among humans,” Dr. Gregson Pigott, the Suffolk County health commissioner, said in a statement.

But he said that transmission could be possible between infected birds and farm workers who had been exposed to them, and an investigation was underway.

There have been 67 confirmed human cases of H5N1 in the United States since last year and one confirmed death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak has caused growing concern across the country and led California to declare a state of emergency last month over outbreaks that affected hundreds of cattle herds.

Health officials did not publicly identify Mr. Corwin’s farm as the site of the outbreak, news of which was previously reported by RiverheadLocal, a Suffolk County news site.

Duck farming was once a pillar of the economy on Long Island, especially in the more rural eastern stretches of Suffolk.

In 1940, there were 90 duck farms in the towns of Brookhaven, Southampton and Riverhead, according to a historical study published by the Suffolk County Department of Planning. But today there is only Crescent.

The process of culling the birds, disinfecting the facility and lifting the quarantine on the farm could take two to three months, Mr. Corwin said.

He added that the one “glimmer of hope we have, that hopefully keeps us going,” is that the government agreed not to destroy several thousand eggs, which might enable him to revive his flock in the future.

But he had not decided whether to take that route.

“I am not 100 percent certain I want to go through that unless the U.S.D.A. approves a vaccine for this virus,” he said. “I don’t want to go through all of this again.”

A local hatchery has agreed to try to hatch the eggs, which may allow the farm to keep its genetic strain of delicious ducks, with an optimal meat-to-fat ratio, alive long enough to restart the business.

The farm produces 3.5 percent of all the ducks sold in the United States. It supplies restaurants in a number of cities, including New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Boston.

“The reason I am in still in business is my genetics, and if I can’t preserve my genetics, then I am worthless as far as duck farming goes,” Mr. Corwin said. “My customers are people who use multiple ducks a night — chefs who use duck after duck after duck.”

The outbreak has forced Mr. Corwin to lay off at least 45 of his roughly 75 employees. He said he was still shocked that his flock had become infected.

“This has spread like wildfire here,” said Mr. Corwin. “I am 66. My great-grandfather started this business. I have seen a lot of things in my years, but I haven’t seen anything like this.”

Recently, a devastating outbreak of bird flu has struck a farm on Long Island, leading to the tragic decision to cull 100,000 ducks in an effort to contain the disease. This heartbreaking news has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about the impact of the outbreak on both the local economy and the welfare of the animals involved.

The farm, located in Suffolk County, has been placed under quarantine as authorities work to prevent the spread of the virus to other farms in the area. The decision to cull such a large number of ducks was made in order to protect public health and prevent further outbreaks of the virus.

The owners of the farm have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their animals, many of whom were beloved members of their flock. They have vowed to take all necessary precautions to prevent future outbreaks and ensure the safety of their remaining animals.

As the community mourns the loss of these ducks, it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that outbreaks of infectious diseases can have on both animals and humans. It is a somber moment for all involved, and our thoughts are with the farmers and their animals during this difficult time.

  • Game Preview: 01.23.25 at Anaheim Ducks

The Penguins continue their season-long seven-game road trip spanning a total of 15 days and are 2-1-0 thus far. It’s the longest road trip for Pittsburgh since their eight-game road swing nearly 30 years ago from Oct. 14-28, 1997 (NYR-MTL-TBL-FLA-SJS-EDM-VAN-CGY).

The Penguins are 13-9-4 dating back to Nov. 27 and in this span, only Tampa Bay has scored more goals than Pittsburgh.

Sidney Crosby’s tally on Monday night in Los Angeles doubled as the game-winning goal. Crosby, who is tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals, is now tied with Steve Yzerman for 13th place on the NHL’s all-time game-winning goals list. Only four players in NHL history have more game-winning goals with one team than Crosby’s 94.

The Penguins captain is also just one point shy of surpassing Hall-of-Famer Joe Sakic for sole possession of the 10th-most road points in NHL history.

Bryan Rust, who ranks second on Pittsburgh with 19 goals, is just one tally shy of his sixth 20-goal season. He’s looking to become just the ninth player in franchise history to have six or more 20-goal seasons with the team.

Kevin Hayes tallied a goal and an assist on Monday in Los Angeles, giving him five points in 10 games (4G-1A) since returning to the lineup on a regular basis on Jan. 3. During that span, only Rickard Rakell has more goals on Pittsburgh.

Evgeni Malkin enters this game with multiple points in five of his last eight games versus Anaheim (5G-8A). In 24 career games against the Ducks, Malkin has recorded 29 points (11G-18A), and his 1.21 points-per-game average against them is third among active players and is tied for sixth in NHL history (min. 20 GP).

Defenseman Erik Karlsson has picked up 26 points (9G-17A) in 33 career games versus Anaheim. Karlsson’s nine goals against the Ducks is the second most among all active defensemen behind Brent Burns (15), and the Ducks are the only team that he has recorded a hat trick against (Nov. 1, 2022: 3G-1A).

Karlsson has an active seven-game point streak versus the Ducks, which is tied for the second-longest point streak against them among active defensemen.

  • Penguins At Ducks Preview: Rakell Returns, Lizotte Out As Pens Look To Build Momentum

After one of their best efforts of the season in a 5-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins will look to continue the momentum on their road trip when they take on the Anaheim Ducks Thursday night.

And they’ll be getting a former Duck back into their lineup to help their efforts.

Forward Rickard Rakell – who missed Monday’s game for family reasons – has rejoined the team and is expected to be back in the lineup against Anaheim. Rakell leads the Penguins in goals this season with 23 and figures to slot right back alongside Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust.

On the flip side, forward Blake Lizotte is the guy coming out of the lineup to make way for Rakell. Lizotte is out with an illness.

Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic – who has earned two straight wins and has only given up three goals on his last 68 shot faced – will get the start between the pipes for the Penguins. In his career against the Ducks, Nedeljkovic is 2-0 with a .947 save percentage and 0.96 goals-against average.

The Ducks sit near the bottom of the Western Conference and are nine points out of the second wild card spot. Their minus-37 goal differential is the third-worst mark in the league, and they’re riding a two-game losing streak. They are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to take on the Anaheim Ducks in a highly anticipated matchup, with the return of Rickard Rakell adding an extra layer of excitement. However, the Ducks will be without Blake Lizotte, who is currently sidelined with an injury.

The Penguins are coming off a solid win against the San Jose Sharks and will be looking to build on that momentum as they face off against the Ducks. With players like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin leading the charge, the Penguins will be a formidable opponent for the Ducks.

On the other hand, the Ducks will be looking to bounce back from a recent loss and will be relying on players like Ryan Getzlaf and John Gibson to lead them to victory. The return of Rakell will certainly provide a boost to the Ducks’ lineup, but the absence of Lizotte could prove to be a challenge.

Overall, this promises to be an exciting and competitive game between two talented teams. Penguins fans will be hoping for another strong performance, while Ducks fans will be eager to see their team come out on top. Stay tuned for what is sure to be a thrilling matchup between these two powerhouse teams.
