Ducks 3-2 Devils (Dec 31, 2024) Game Recap

ANAHEIM, Calif. — — Ryan Strome scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:24 to play, and the Anaheim Ducks blew a two-goal lead in the third period before recovering for a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

Strome had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who have won back-to-back games for only the second time in six weeks. Troy Terry and Robby Fabbri also scored, and Lukas Dostal made 32 saves.

Timo Meier scored the tying goal with 6:40 left for New Jersey, which fell out of the Eastern Conference lead with its second straight loss. Jonas Siegenthaler also scored, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 23 shots.

Terry forced a turnover in the neutral zone in the first period and eventually scored his 11th goal on Strome’s pass from behind the net. Fabbri converted on a 2-on-1 rush with Cutter Gauthier in the third.

Siegenthaler scored just 1:34 later on a long shot through traffic for the Swiss defenseman’s first goal since Nov. 7. Dougie Hamilton then set up Meier in the slot for his 14th goal.

    Takeaways

Devils: Their first two periods weren’t pretty to begin the four-game West Coast portion of their six-game trip, but the Devils gave an engaged effort in the third.

Ducks: They had a feistiness they haven’t regularly showed, with several physical scraps. They’re having a rough season, but they’ve beaten both conference leaders at home in the past two weeks.

    Key moment

Strome got the puck after several passes in New Jersey’s end, and his long, precise shot through screens by Radko Gudas and Frank Vatrano beat Markstrom.

    Key stat

Devils brothers Jack and Luke Hughes combined for 11 shots on goal, but Dostal was mostly outstanding.

    Up next

The Devils stay in town to face Los Angeles on Wednesday, and the Ducks are at Winnipeg on Thursday.

In a thrilling New Year’s Eve matchup, the Anaheim Ducks edged out the New Jersey Devils with a final score of 3-2. The game was full of intense action and back-and-forth play, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

The Ducks got on the board first with a goal from their star forward in the opening period. The Devils quickly responded with a goal of their own, tying up the game heading into the second period. Both teams battled hard in the middle frame, but it was the Ducks who were able to break the deadlock with another goal, giving them a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.

The Devils fought back in the third period, managing to tie up the game with a goal of their own. However, the Ducks were not to be denied, as they scored the game-winning goal late in the period, securing the victory and two crucial points in the standings.

Overall, it was a hard-fought and entertaining game between two talented teams. The Ducks showed resilience and determination in securing the win, while the Devils put up a strong fight until the very end. Fans of both teams can be proud of the effort put forth by their players in this exciting matchup.

With this win, the Ducks continue to climb up the standings, while the Devils will look to bounce back in their next game. Both teams have shown that they have what it takes to compete at a high level, making for an exciting rest of the season ahead.

Devils End 2024 with a Loss to the Anaheim Ducks

The Result: The New Jersey Devils were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks 3-2.

The Game Stats: NHL.com’s Recap, NHL.com Game Summary, NHL.com Event Summary, NHL.com Full Play-by-Play, NHL.com Shot Report, Natural Stat Trick Game Stats

This recap carries a caveat. Due to my location, the game was blacked out, and I was unable to watch it. Therefore, this recap relies on statistics, highlights, and will be abbreviated.

    First Period

Despite recording 15 shots on Lukas Dostal, eight of which were on the power play, New Jersey failed to score in the first frame. Instead, Anaheim was able to strike first and on their first shot of the game. A mishandled puck behind the Devils’ net led to a turnover and pass from Ryan Strome to Troy Terry, camped in front of Jacob Markstrom. Terry’s shot appeared to be deflected by Dawson Mercer’s reaching stick or Erik Haula’s body as he dove to block the shot, but it found its way past Markstrom. 1-0, and that is how the first period would end. According to Natural Stat Trick, New Jersey had 2.26 expected goals to Anaheim’s 0.3 during the first period, but as Devils fans are all too aware…statistics do not always translate to actual goals scored.

The Devils were on the power play (five on four) for four minutes during period one but could not convert.

    Second Period

The Ducks came to life in the second period, and the Devils spent an uncharacteristic amount of time in the penalty box. New Jersey accrued eight minutes of penalties in the second frame, four of which came from Nico Hischier’s interaction with Alex Killorn. Killorn would be penalized for elbowing, but the Ducks could not accomplish anything with the man advantage. Anaheim outshot the New Jersey 11 to six and had four High Danger Scoring Chances (HDSC) to the New Jersey’s three. As The People Who Matter noted in the gamethread, the game had an ominous tone, exemplified by Kurtis MacDermid’s breakaway opportunity as the penalty he was serving for Hischier expired, only to be tracked down. At the same time, Jesper Bratt was called for tripping. When the second period concluded, the Devils still trailed 1-0.

    Third Period

The final frame did not start the way the Devils would like. With just under four minutes expired in the period, Cutter Gauthier and Robby Fabbri caught the Devils deep in the offensive zone and took a two-on-one into the Devils’ zone. Gauthier passed to Fabbri, who beat Markstrom, who had come out of the crease aggressively to challenge.

About a minute and a half later, New Jersey finally got off the mat. Jonas Siegenthaler recovered a clearing attempt at the point and wristed a shot on net through traffic that beat Dostal.

Things would get even better – momentarily. With over 13 minutes elapsed in the third, Timo Meier took a drop pass from Dougie Hamilton after entering the Ducks’ zone and ripped a shot over Dostal’s shoulder. All tied up!

Meier collided with a couple of Ducks players as he followed through with the shot. A scrum ensued as Ducks players stood over Meier following the goal, and Devils teammates, including Hischier, moved in to pick up Meier and celebrate. Matching penalties were assessed to Hischier and Mason McTavish. Hischier’s third penalty of the game, which is unheard of.

But the tie wouldn’t last. With less than four minutes left in the period, Strome received a pass at the blue line, walked down to the top of the right circle, and blasted a slap shot past Markstrom. Dagger.

The Ducks blocked a total of 21 shots during this game and had 19 giveaways. In the end, New Jersey could not overcome the late deficit and lost 3-2.

    Takeaways

    Missed Opportunity

Later in the season, when playoff berths and positions are being fought for, the Devils may regret this game. Despite good goaltending, the Ducks are not a good team and have only tallied 34 points through 36 games. In the second half of this California back-to-back, New Jersey will face the Kings, who have a 12-2-1 record at home (per Statmuse). Not an easy task. I’m not saying the Devils cannot or will not win tomorrow, but they need to stack up as many points as possible. As Jackson mentioned in the preview, New Jersey will face other struggling teams, such as San Jose and New York, on this road trip, but missing out on two points tonight is a missed opportunity.

    Dostal is Legit

Bryce Salvador discussed Dostal and his impact on Anaheim’s goals against ranking during MSG’s pregame coverage. Following the game on Tuesday night, Anaheim is second in the NHL in expected goals against (xGA) at five-on-five with 88.23 per Natural Stat Trick. Dostal has saved 3.91 goals above average, which is why Anaheim’s actual goals against (GA) ranking is at the league average (or better) with 68 (per Natural Stat Trick). The Ducks were expected to score 1.46 goals tonight but found a way to score three. The way Dostal is playing, three goals are enough to win, and with Anaheim’s offense, it has to be.

    Status as 2024 Ends

Despite the disappointment of the last two games, the Devils end 2024 in second place in the Metropolitan Division. Yes, the first-place Capitals and third-place Hurricanes have played three fewer games than the Devils. I realize this sentiment might be unwelcome after the last two games, but after the disaster that was last season, I’ll take it. This team has its issues. New Jersey desperately needs to add talent or find the right line combination to get more depth scoring. The top two lines have played well, and Markstrom ended 2024 with a stretch of good performances.

    Your Thoughts

Happy New Year to all The People Who Matter! What did I miss in this recap? Will the Devils regret missing out on these two points later in the year? Are you happy with the Devils’ position at this point? Let me know in the comments below. I apologize for the abbreviated recap; thank you for reading, and GO DEVILS!

In a disappointing turn of events, the Devils end their 2024 season with a loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Despite a strong effort from the team, they were unable to come out on top in the final game of the season.

Fans are left wondering what could have been as the Devils fall short of their playoff aspirations. It’s a tough way to end the season, but the team will regroup and come back stronger next year.

Stay tuned for updates on the Devils’ offseason plans and what changes may be in store for the team heading into the next season.

  • Denver Broncos’ Bo Nix ‘Jealous’ Of Brother Tez Johnson, Oregon Ducks’ Rose Bowl

Denver Broncos’ Bo Nix ‘Jealous’ Of Brother Tez Johnson, Oregon Ducks’ Rose Bowl

Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix has put the NFL on notice in his rookie season, leading the Denver Broncos to a 9-7 record and a chance to clinch a spot in the NFL Playoffs for the first time since 2015.

Nix has been busy, breaking a record seemingly every week, most recently for a beautiful deep touchdown pass vs. Cincinnati that traveled 67 “air yards” – earning the longest completion of any quarterback in the 2024 season.

Nix remains an avid Ducks supporter, as he cheers on Johnson, former teammates and coach Dan Lanning. Johnson is Oregon’s leading receiver and fresh off his best game yet in Big Ten Championship Game vs. No. 3 Penn State, catching 11 passes for a career-high 181 yards and a touchdown en route to being named the game’s MVP.

The two brothers Nix and Johnson starred for the Ducks in 2023, leading Oregon to a 12-2 overall record and a win over Liberty in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. A successful season by many but Oregon fell short of its ultimate goal – to compete for a National Championship in the College Football Playoff.

Now, the No. 1 Ducks will face the Ohio State Buckeyes in the iconic Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day with a chance to punch their ticket to the CFP Semifinal. The opportunity is one that Johnson does not take lightly.

“I was on the phone with Bo, and he was like, ‘I’m so jealous’… He says he’s jealous all the time. He’ll be the first one to tell you, because all he wanted to do was play in the College Football Playoff,” Johnson said.

“But now that I’m in the Rose Bowl, just showcasing it, everyone is happy for me,” Johnson continued. “I’m happy for myself, but we know we’ve got more to go. But I’ve definitely reflected on it and don’t want it to end any time soon.”

How does Johnson respond to Nix’s envy?

“I’ll be like, ‘Well, you can go win a Super Bowl. That’s better. You can go win a Super Bowl and be one of the best quarterbacks in the entire country.’”

Nix and the Broncos play Sunday vs. the Kansas City Chiefs in Denver in a game with massive NFL playoff implications. However, Nix is excited to watch the Oregon game on Wednesday and Johnson says he plans on attending a game soon.

“He’s very excited to watch us play,” Johnson said. “He’ll be at a game here soon. So it’s going to be electric when he comes back. I can’t wait to see him. I haven’t seen him since he got drafted.”

Johnson cheers on Nix too and admits Denver’s overtime loss to Cincinnati last Saturday had his heart pounding.

“Just texting him every day after the games. . . . Even though he had my heart going in and out of my chest for Broncos vs. Cincinnati. It’s games like that that I watch him play, and you see, wow, that kid’s still doing the same thing he’s done since a kid. So I love him to death. Can’t wait to see him. He’s my brother.”

The Ducks bring a perfect 13-0 record into “The Granddaddy of Them All,” and will look to advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals for the second time in program history.

In arguably the most significant regular-season win in program history, the Ducks upset the Buckeyes in front of a record crowd in Autzen Stadium almost three months ago. Johnson has noticed key differences in the Buckeyes team now, compared to October.

“They play with a little bit of chip on their shoulder right now. And we see that.” Johnson said. “They’re a really good team. They’re a hot motor team. They got really good coaches behind them.”

“We play with a chip too. They’re not the only ones,” Johnson added.

Despite earning the No. 1 seed in the playoff, Oregon is underdogs to Ohio State. Many doubt the Ducks ability to beat the Buckeyes twice in one season. If the Ducks beat the Buckeyes, they would be the first team to beat Ohio State twice in the same season since 1894.

Oregon would then advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals in Arlington, Texas, to play the winner of Arizona State vs. the Texas Longhorns at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

For Johnson, Wednesday will be a chance to extend his Oregon career. The receiver gets emotional as he talks about his Duck legacy. Upon arrival in Los Angeles for the game, Johnson’s girlfriend sent him a photo of his face on a Rose Bowl billboard in the City of Angels, and he said he couldn’t help but cry.

“I’m like, there’s no way I’m here right now,” Johnson said. “I literally have the Rose Bowl jacket on.”

Despite missing nearly three full games due to injury, Johnson has a chance to etch his name further into Oregon’s history. Johnson is only eight receptions away from the Oregon single-season receptions record of 86 he set in 2023.

The Denver Broncos’ quarterback Bo Nix is feeling a little jealous of his younger brother Tez Johnson, who plays for the Oregon Ducks and just clinched a victory in the Rose Bowl. Despite being proud of his brother’s success, Bo Nix can’t help but feel a twinge of envy as he watches Tez bask in the glory of a big win on one of college football’s biggest stages. • Former Oregon Ducks star rips his NFL team, says changes ‘need to be made’ after missing the playoffs again

Former Oregon Ducks star rips his NFL team, says changes ‘need to be made’ after missing the playoffs again

DeForest Buckner is tired of sitting at home during the NFL playoffs.

The Indianapolis Colts (7-9) were officially eliminated from the playoff race after an embarrassing 45-33 loss to the lowly New York Giants on Sunday. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Giants (3-13), who entered the game with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, but dropped to No. 4 following the win over the Colts.

The Colts allowed Giants’ journeyman backup quarterback Drew Lock to look like Peyton Manning. Lock threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns – tying his career-high – and one rushing touchdown with no sacks or interceptions. The Giants scored 45 points despite entering the game with the worst offense in the league. It was the most points the Colts have allowed all season.

Unsurprisingly, the Colts’ star defensive lineman wasn’t happy.

“I’m going to be honest, as [an] entire team, we (expletive) the bed,” Buckner told reporters after the game. “Another year and it’s frustrating. You know what I mean? Because like I’ve been saying, I can see what we have. It’s just, we’re not getting over that hump … I just feel like it’s really details that we’re missing that’s hurting us.”

The loss marked the third time in the last four seasons that the Colts have failed in a must-win situation when it comes to the playoffs. They haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2020 season, Buckner’s first season in Indianapolis.

The Colts’ inability to win critical games late in the season and ongoing playoff futility prompted questions about possible changes in the offseason.

“There’s obviously going to be people that are going to still be in the building, people that are not,” Buckner told reporters after the game. “Changes are going to need to be made, you know what I mean? I understand that, and we all understand that in the building. You’ve got to make those changes for the better.”

The Colts will finish the season with a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Former Oregon Ducks star and current NFL player, Marcus Mariota, recently expressed his frustration with his team’s performance after missing the playoffs once again. In a candid interview, Mariota did not hold back in his criticism, stating that changes “need to be made” in order for the team to find success.

Mariota, who was a standout quarterback at Oregon before being drafted into the NFL, has been a key player for his team but has yet to see postseason success. In his interview, he expressed disappointment in the team’s inability to make the playoffs despite their talent and potential.

The former Ducks star did not name specific changes that need to be made, but his comments have sparked speculation about potential roster moves or coaching changes in the offseason. Fans of the team are eager to see what steps will be taken to address the issues highlighted by Mariota.

As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on the team to see if they heed Mariota’s calls for change and make the necessary adjustments to turn their fortunes around. Only time will tell if his words will lead to meaningful improvements for the team.

  • Devils End 2024 with Loss to Ducks | GAME STORY

Devils End 2024 with Loss to Ducks | GAME STORY

Here are some observations from the game:

    • The Devils held the Ducks to just five shots on goal in the first period. In the second period, the Ducks were the beneficiaries of multiple powerplays and were able to narrow the shot discrepancy from 15-5 to 21-16, with 11 shots in the second period.

    • While the Ducks held the 1-0 lead midway through the first period, the Devils were not short on their opportunities, though they were certainly short on luck. Timo Meier and Dougie Hamilton wired clean shots off the crossbar behind Dostal, while Meier also had two separate moments where a rebounded puck skipped over his stick.

    • The Devils penalty killers were an important cog in keeping the game close heading into the third period. With the Ducks leading 1-0, just before the halfway mark of the second period, New Jersey got into some penalty trouble. At 8:20, Nico Hischier was called for a hook and a hold on the same play, while Ducks Alex Killorn was called for an elbow on Hischier on the same play. The Hischier penalties began a stretch where the Devils not only had Hischier in the box for four minutes but also, as the Devils captain’s first minor expired, Jesper Bratt was called for a tripping penalty.

The Ducks pushed the Devils and managed five shots on Jacob Markstrom, who was superb and integral in bringing the Devils into the third period trailing only by one.

In a disappointing turn of events, the Devils fell to the Ducks in a heartbreaking loss at Devils End in 2024. Despite putting up a strong fight, the Devils were unable to secure a victory, ultimately falling short against their opponents.

The game started off with both teams showing great energy and determination, with the Devils taking an early lead. However, the Ducks quickly responded with a series of goals, putting them ahead and leaving the Devils playing catch-up for the remainder of the game.

The Devils fought hard to close the gap, but the Ducks’ defense proved to be too strong, preventing the Devils from finding the back of the net. Despite their best efforts, the Devils were unable to overcome the Ducks’ lead, ultimately resulting in a disappointing loss for the team.

Despite the outcome, the Devils showed great resilience and determination throughout the game, demonstrating their potential for future success. As they regroup and prepare for their next matchup, the Devils will look to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger in their pursuit of victory. Stay tuned for more updates on Devils End 2024.

Game #36: Ducks vs. Devils Gameday Preview

In their final game of 2024, the Ducks will take on the New Jersey Devils. The Ducks are coming off a stellar comeback victory on Sunday against the Edmonton Oilers, a terrific response from their 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers the previous day. The Devils come into town on three days’ rest after falling 5-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 28.

In the previous matchup between the Ducks and the Devils in New Jersey, the latter got the best of the former. The Devils tacked on six goals in their Oct. 27 victory over the Ducks, who were on the second game of a back-to-back (SEGABABA).

Ducks forward Leo Carlsson emphasized how dangerous the Devils are because of their speed and that the Ducks’ legs were “just not there” in that 6-2 loss.

“I think it’s a different game when we play at Honda Center,” Carlsson said. “We got a great win yesterday (against the Oilers) too. (We want to) build off of that.”

After missing the last two games due to illness, John Gibson appears ready to return to game action. He was a full participant in today’s practice and could potentially be in line to start tomorrow against the Devils after Lukáš Dostál worked both ends of the matinee back-to-back this past weekend.

Brock McGinn (lower-body) was placed on injured reserve before Sunday’s game against the Oilers, leaving the Ducks without a healthy extra forward for the time being.

The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils at the Anaheim Ducks

The Song of the Evening: This past year saw the continued ascendency from Knocked Loose. Some hardcore bands veer in a more mainstream direction if they get bigger. Knocked Loose has become even heavier with their 2024 album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To. A great example is “Moss Covers All” which goes right into “Take Me Home.”

The Rules: The rules remain as they have been even with this being the end of the year. Please keep your language clean (this means no swearing, don’t mask it, it’s not enough, no I don’t care what Tom Fitzgerald said in the preseason), respect your fellow Devils fan with no personal attacks (play nice or you will not play here), no illegal streams (this means no asking, no hints, no nothing about it), and please keep your comments relevant to this game. Go Devils!

Devils, Ducks Meet on New Year’s Eve | PREVIEW

    PRE-GAME AVAIL RECAP

ANAHEIM, CA – The New Jersey Devils are preparing for their second consecutive back-to-back games when they take on the Ducks in Anaheim at 5 p.m. local time.

Sheldon Keefe confirmed that Kurtis MacDermid is will to re-enter the lineup tonight. He will take the place of Tomas Tatar, as seen on Monday during the practice session. MacDermid skated on a line with Curtis Lazar and Nathan Bastian.

Jacob Markstrom will get the start in net.

    Quick Stops

One of the great abilities the Devils have shown this season is to end a losing skid often immediately. The club has only lost consecutive games in regulation once this year, and that was early on in the season, during a winless streak between Oct. 19 and Oct. 25 when the club went 0-2-2, with regulation losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Detroit Red Wings, while losing in overtime to the Capitals and Islanders.

“I think it’s really important,” Keefe said. “You want to be a group that bounces back, you don’t want to let things snowball and you make corrections, you come out with a little extra push in your game, I think naturally. We’ve given up points, we talked about it yesterday, that Carolina game, maybe we’re not playing our best game but we’re 1-nothing with a minute left in the second period, we’re 2-1 into the third period, and to not get points in a game like that, that should bother us, it certainly bothers me.

“I think that just as a mindset for our team, it’s something we’ve talked a lot about. You need to bounce back quickly.”

    Practicing Patience

Playing on Nico Hischier’s wing generally means that as a line, you’ll be going up against some of the best competition the opponent has to offer. One of the things that Keefe has liked about the combination of the Timo Meier, Hischier and Stefan Noesen line is how they remain patient, being defensively responsible against some of the leagues best, while waiting for their own offense.

While it maybe come more naturally to a player like Hischier, it’s an area of Meier’s game that Keefe has seen flourish and grow. It has been an important part of the success the line has achieved together.

“That’s what I like a lot about their game,” Keefe said.” They recognize the responsibility and Nico is that type of player, but Timo has to be really disciplined in his approach. I think it’s a lot different for him in terms of his mindset to have that patience and keep working and not open the game up unnecessarily, especially playing against top players.

“Most of the top players can thrive in an open game, opportunities on the rush and such,” he continued. “So (Meier’s) ability to forecheck and simplify his game a little more offensively, at times maybe takes away from some of the offense, but they’ve also got rewarded at times. So, that’s all part of it and so important if you’re trying to be a good player on a good team.”

As the calendar year comes to a close, the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks will face off in a thrilling matchup on New Year’s Eve. Both teams will be looking to end the year on a high note and secure a valuable win in the standings.

The Devils, led by captain Nico Hischier and star winger Jack Hughes, have been playing solid hockey as of late and will be looking to continue their winning ways against the Ducks. With a strong defensive core and a potent offense, New Jersey will be a tough opponent for Anaheim to face.

On the other hand, the Ducks, led by captain Ryan Getzlaf and young phenom Trevor Zegras, have been battling hard all season and will be looking to come out on top against the Devils. With a mix of veteran leadership and youthful energy, Anaheim will be a formidable opponent for New Jersey.

This New Year’s Eve matchup promises to be an exciting and intense game, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for the victory. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Devils and Ducks go head-to-head in a battle for bragging rights to close out the year.
