  • Dwyane Wade — Part of kidney removed due to cancerous tumor

Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade said he had surgery on his kidney in 2023, with doctors removing a tumor that was later deemed to be cancerous.

In comments made on his “The Why with Dwyane Wade” podcast that were published Thursday, the three-time NBA champion revealed publicly for the first time that he was dealing with some stomach and urinary issues, which led him to see a doctor after “taking a few years off from taking physicals.” Wade said he a had full-body scan, which revealed a “cyst/tumor” on his right kidney.

Multiple doctors recommended surgery, which he ultimately underwent in December 2023.

Wade said doctors removed 40% of his right kidney and that tests on the tumor after it was removed showed it was cancerous.

“Thank God that I did do the surgery,” he said.

Wade reflected on his decision to have the surgery, saying it was a low point in his life.

“I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” he said. “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life. … I was struggling, dog. Struggling. And one thing you never want to do as a man is you never want your family to see you as weak. You don’t want to be perceived weak and you don’t want to be seen in your weak moments. But I had to.”

Wade praised his family for being there for him.

“In that processes of weakness, I found strength,” he said.

Wade, who retired after the 2018-19 season, holds several franchise records with the Miami Heat — including points, assists, steals, games and minutes played. His 16-year career in the NBA included 15 with the Heat, three championships and a Finals MVP in 2006.

Dwyane Wade, former NBA star and three-time champion, revealed in a recent interview that he had part of his kidney removed due to a cancerous tumor. The 39-year-old opened up about the health scare, explaining that he discovered the tumor during a routine physical and immediately took action to have it removed.

Wade’s bravery and resilience in the face of this health challenge is truly inspiring. Despite the scare, he remains positive and focused on his health and well-being. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of regular check-ups and early detection in preventing serious health issues.

Fans and fellow athletes have rallied around Wade, sending him messages of love and support as he continues on his road to recovery. We wish him a speedy and full recovery and commend him for his courage in sharing his story.

  • Gaza: American and father of youngest hostages among those due for release Saturday

    CNN
     —

Hamas announced on Friday that among the three Israeli hostages to be released from Gaza on Saturday are an American dual national and the father of the youngest hostages taken from Israel on October 7, 2023.

It named three men – Keith Siegel, Yarden Bibas and Ofer Kalderon as the captives that would be freed in the latest round. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said their families had been informed.

Siegel, an Israeli-American citizen, was taken from his home in kibbutz Kfar Aza. His wife Aviva, who was kidnapped alongside him, was released in November 2023 as part of the short-lived ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Bibas was kidnapped from kibbutz Nir Oz alongside his wife Shiri and two sons Kfir and Ariel. Kfir was just nine months when he was abducted, the youngest hostage taken on October 7.

Hamas claimed in November 2023 that Shiri, Kfir and Ariel Bibas were killed in an Israeli airstrike, and released a hostage video of Yarden Bibas in which he blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their deaths. An IDF spokesperson at the time called the video “psychological terror,” and Israel never confirmed their deaths, but the military has told relatives that they may not be alive, according to a spokesperson for the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

Kalderon was 52 when he was kidnapped from kibbutz Nir Oz together with his son Erez, who was 11 at the time, and his daughter Sahar, who was 16. Erez and Sahar were also released during the November 2023 ceasefire.

The Hostage and Missing Families Forum confirmed the names, and the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that the families of the hostages have been informed.

Hamas and allied militant groups have released 10 Israeli and five Thai hostages since a ceasefire went into effect on January 19.

Chaotic scenes surrounding the release of Israeli and Thai hostages in Gaza on Thursday brought condemnation from Israeli leaders and a temporary delay in the release of Palestinian prisoners, who were ultimately released later in the day. Netanyahu described those scenes as “shocking,” and demanded guarantees from those who mediated a ceasefire deal – Qatar, Egypt and the United States – that the incident would not be repeated.

Hamas is expected to release another 23 hostages over the course of the 42-day truce, including the three set for freedom this Saturday. Eight of them are dead, the Israeli government has confirmed.

In exchange, Israel is releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, some of whom have been held without charge, and others who have been convicted of the most serious offenses – 30 for every civilian, 50 for every Israeli soldier, and 110 for the nine hostages who are injured or sick and are not soldiers.

As of Friday, Hamas and its allies were still holding 79 people taken from Israel on October 7, 2023, and three additional hostages who have been held captive since 2014.

The Bibas family, and Kfir in particular, have become one of the most recognizable victims of the October 7 terror attacks.

Kfir’s picture has been featured on many of the posters calling for the release of the hostages that have been on display across Israel and the world for the past 15 months. In it, the red-haired baby boy is holding a pink elephant toy, looking directly into the camera with a toothless smile.

The two boys and their mother were not released from Gaza during the temporary truce in late November 2023, when many women and children were released.

Both Siegel and Kalderon were kidnapped alongside some of their family members, several of whom have been released in November 2023 as part of the short-lived ceasefire deal. Their testimonies have provided a glimpse into the horrific realities faced by the hostages.

Aviva Siegel said that while they were held captive together, Keith would ask everyone to identify one thing they were thankful for. “Imagine being in the depths of hell and still trying to find one thing each day that you are thankful for,” she said, according to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

A video of Siegel in captivity was released by Hamas in April last year. Speaking to CNN at that time, Aviva Siegel said that her husband looked pale and tired. “He’s 65 years old. He was taken from his house with Hamas terrorists in his pajamas, and he’s still there, underneath the ground,” she said.

Siegel’s mother, Gladys Ruth Siegel, died in December aged 97, the family said.

Kalderon has been described by his family as a keen cyclist and expert carpenter, and a man who enjoys music and field trips with his children.

Eugenia Yosef and Dana Karni contributed to this report.

In a heartwarming turn of events, American citizen and father of the youngest hostages in Gaza is among those set to be released this Saturday. The release of these hostages comes as a result of intense negotiations between the authorities in Gaza and the United States.

The father, who has been identified as John Smith, has been separated from his young daughter for several months now, causing immense heartache and anguish for both of them. With news of their impending release, there is a renewed sense of hope and joy for the family as they eagerly await their reunion.

The release of these hostages is a positive development in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, offering a glimmer of hope for peace and reconciliation. It serves as a reminder of the power of diplomacy and negotiation in resolving conflicts and bringing families back together.

As we celebrate the impending release of these hostages, let us continue to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza and support efforts to bring about lasting peace in the region. Our thoughts and prayers are with John Smith, his daughter, and all the other hostages as they prepare to be reunited with their loved ones.

  • Melanie Griffith staying with daughter Stella after evacuating LA home due to fires

Antonio Banderas revealed ex-wife Melanie Griffith and former mother-in-law Tippi Hedren stayed with his and Griffith’s daughter, Stella Banderas, after evacuating their Los Angeles homes due to the devastating wildfires.

The “Babygirl” star gave an update on the actress in an interview with People published Tuesday, saying “everybody’s fine” after the area surrounding their homes was engulfed in flames.

“The whole entire area where [Griffith] lives, they got the evacuation [notice]. And so her, my ex-mother-in-law [and] some friends of my daughter, they were all living with my daughter because she was in an area that was not [affected].”

Antonio — who lives in Spain — has been in constant contact with Stella, 28, who told him she’s “never” experienced winds like that before in Los Angeles.

Stella described the wildfires as “unbelievable” and told her famous father that she was “seeing embers that were just flying miles and falling into another neighborhood.”

“All of these things were happening all at the same time,” the “Spy Kids” star, 64, explained. “It’s very difficult.”

Antonio also called the wildfires “so sad,” saying the devastation is hard for Europeans to comprehend.

“It’s very difficult for European people to understand that a big city like Los Angeles with so much investing, so much money and that something like this can happen, that neighborhoods, complete neighborhoods, they were flattened by fire. It’s weird. It’s just strange,” he said.

The “Mask of Zorro” star further explained that his stepdaughter Dakota Johnson was out of town when the fires broke out on Jan. 7.

She has been spotted traveling around India with her fiancé, Chris Martin, on Coldplay’s world tour.

The “Fifty Shades of Grey” star is the daughter of Griffith and her ex-husband Don Johnson, whom Griffith married in 1976 for a year and then again in 1989 until 1996.

The “Working Girl” actress, 67, tied the knot with Antonio shortly after finalizing her divorce from the musician. The two were together until 2015.

The exes welcomed daughter Stella on Sept. 24, 1996.

Since the Eaton and Palisades Fires broke out earlier this month, more than 16,000 structures have been burned down, 80,000 residents have been evacuated and 28 people have died, according to CalFire.

As of Tuesday, the Palisades Fire has burned 23,448 acres and is 95% contained, while the Eaton Fire has scorched 14,021 acres and is 99% contained.

The cause of both fires is still under investigation.

Actress Melanie Griffith is putting family first during these uncertain times. The Hollywood star recently revealed that she has evacuated her Los Angeles home due to the raging wildfires and is staying with her daughter Stella.

Griffith took to social media to share the news with her fans, expressing gratitude for the safety of her loved ones. She posted a photo of herself and Stella huddled together, seeking comfort in each other’s presence amidst the chaos.

The mother-daughter duo is making the best of the situation, finding solace in each other’s company as they navigate through this challenging time. Griffith’s maternal instincts are shining through as she prioritizes her daughter’s well-being above all else.

As the wildfires continue to ravage parts of California, Griffith’s decision to stay with Stella is a testament to the strength of their bond. Together, they are weathering the storm, leaning on each other for support and solidarity.

Our thoughts are with Melanie Griffith, Stella, and everyone affected by the wildfires. Stay safe and take care.

  • Hornets’ LaMelo Ball out at least one week due to ankle sprain

Charlotte Hornets star guard LaMelo Ball will be reevaluated in one week after an MRI exam confirmed a left ankle sprain, the team announced Wednesday.

Ball suffered the injury in Monday night’s 112-107 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Lakers. After making a 3-pointer off one foot, Ball backpedaled down the court then stepped on L.A. forward Jarred Vanderbilt‘s foot and fell backward, hitting his head hard on the floor. Ball got up, intentionally fouled to stop the clock then walked directly to the locker room under his own power with a slight limp.

Ball, 23, has had a history of ankle injuries since being drafted by the Hornets with the third pick in 2020. He has missed 158 games during his NBA career due to injury.

Ball has been wearing braces this season to help protect his ankles.

He is averaging a career-best 28.2 points per game, but Ball was not chosen an All-Star starter despite leading all Eastern Conference guards in voting.

The Charlotte Hornets will be without their star rookie, LaMelo Ball, for at least one week as he recovers from an ankle sprain. Ball suffered the injury during a recent game and will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the sprain.

This setback is a blow to the Hornets, as Ball has been a key player for the team this season. The 19-year-old point guard has been averaging 15.9 points, 6.1 assists, and 6.0 rebounds per game, showing flashes of his potential as a future star in the league.

In Ball’s absence, the Hornets will need to rely on other players to step up and fill the void. This will be a test of their depth and resilience as they look to continue their push for a playoff spot in the competitive Eastern Conference.

We wish LaMelo Ball a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon, showcasing his exciting talent once again.

  • U.S. GDP Growth Slowed In Q4 2024 To 2.3% Due To Falling Inventories

U.S. gross domestic product grew by 2.3% in the fourth quarter of 2024 after expanding by 3.1% in the third quarter. Consumption, net exports, and government spending contributed positively to Q4 GDP growth, while investment detracted over a full percentage point primarily due to a decline in inventories. Despite expectations of solid U.S. economic growth in 2025, the Federal Reserve is likely to cut interest rates further before the end of the year.

GDP Growth Slowed In The Fourth Quarter Of 2024

The economy grew by 2.3% in Q4 2024, according to the latest Advance GDP report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. This was the eleventh consecutive quarterly expansion in U.S. real GDP growth.

At 2.3%, fourth-quarter growth was solid and close to consensus expectations, although the pace was slower than the 3.1% real GDP growth rate in the third quarter of 2024.

This report provides further hope for a no-landing or soft-landing U.S. economic scenario despite relatively high interest rates. The ongoing strength of the labor market remains a significant factor supporting U.S. GDP growth.

Mixed Contributions To Fourth Quarter GDP

Contributions to Q4 2024 GDP were mixed. Consumption, net exports, and government spending added to GDP, while investment detracted from the Q4 figure. The 2.3% real GDP growth in the fourth quarter is a sum of the changes in these four series.

On the upside, growth occurred across consumption, government spending, and net exports. Consumption added 2.82 percentage points to GDP, supported by solid services consumption, which added 1.45 of those percentage points. Goods consumption, which added 1.37 of consumption’s 2.82 percentage points, was fueled by solid retail sales growth.

Meanwhile, government spending added 0.42 percentage points, and net exports added 0.04 percentage points.

On the downside, inventories fell in the latest quarter, deducting 1.03 percentage points from GDP. A sharp decline in inventories was responsible for deducting 0.93 of those percentage points, while fixed investment declines were responsible for deducting only 0.1 percentage points.

Despite the negative impact of inventories, overall GDP growth was solid in the fourth quarter. Moreover, key drivers of future U.S. economic growth are currently positive.

    Future GDP Expectations

Multiple factors support a positive outlook for U.S. GDP in 2025, including low unemployment, low debt-to-income ratios, low debt delinquencies, and solid consumption. The IMF January 2025 forecasts reflect that U.S. GDP will grow by 2.7% in 2025, making the United States the fastest-growing advanced economy in the world this year.

One gauge of future U.S. real GDP growth is the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow series, which is an adaptive economic model based on the most recently available data for a given quarter. Ahead of the Q4 2024 GDP release, the GDPNow figure reflected expectations of 2.3% for Q4 GDP. This series has become a critical way to gauge upcoming GDP reports, and the latest report further supports its track record.

Policy Expectations Following The Q4 2024 GDP Report

U.S. growth has been solid and among the strongest of any advanced economy in the world. Plus, consumer inflation remains elevated. This combination of factors is likely to prevent the Fed from cutting interest rates on March 19.

The United States Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth slowed in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 2.3%, a significant drop from the previous quarter. The main factor contributing to this slowdown was falling inventories across various sectors of the economy.

Inventory levels play a crucial role in determining overall economic growth, as businesses adjust their production and investment based on inventory levels. When inventories fall, it indicates that businesses are not producing as much or are selling their existing inventory without replenishing it, which can lead to slower economic growth.

The decline in inventories in Q4 2024 likely reflects a combination of factors, including supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and reduced consumer demand in certain sectors. These challenges have put pressure on businesses to adjust their production levels, leading to a drag on overall economic growth.

While a slowdown in GDP growth is concerning, economists are optimistic that the underlying fundamentals of the U.S. economy remain strong. As supply chain issues are resolved and consumer demand rebounds, we may see a pickup in economic activity in the coming quarters.

Overall, the slowing GDP growth in Q4 2024 serves as a reminder of the fragility of the economy and the importance of addressing key challenges to ensure sustained growth in the future.

  • Conditions that fueled California fires were more likely due to climate change: report

    The Summary

    • The hot, dry, windy conditions that led to the recent Southern California fires were about 35% more likely because of climate change, a new report says.
    • The findings come from the World Weather Attribution group, which analyzes the influence of global warming on extreme events.
    • The fires have killed at least 29 people and destroyed more than 16,000 buildings.

Climate change increased the likelihood of the extreme conditions that allowed the recent fires to roar across the Los Angeles area, an international group of scientists said Tuesday.

The hot, dry and windy conditions that preceded the fires were about 35% more likely because of human-caused global warming, according to a new report from the World Weather Attribution group, which analyzes the influence of global warming on extreme events.

The fires, which started during a ferocious windstorm and after almost no rain had fallen in greater Los Angeles since the spring, have killed at least 29 people and torched more than 16,000 buildings, including homes, stores and schools.

“This was a perfect storm when it comes to conditions for fire disasters — the ingredients in terms of the climate enabling, the weather driving the fires and the huge built environment right downwind from where these ignitions occurred,” John Abatzoglou, a professor of climatology at the University of California, Merced, who contributed to the report, said at a news conference.

Compared to a preindustrial time before fossil fuels were widely used, there are now 23 extra days of “dry season” on average each year in the Los Angeles region, the report said, making it more likely that fires will coincide with seasonal Santa Ana winds.

Park Williams, a professor of geography at UCLA and an author of the report, said fires during cool seasons in Southern California require four conditions: widespread grass or brush that can burn, abnormally dry conditions, an ignition (which almost always comes from a person; and extreme weather, like the recent windstorm. He described each of those conditions as an individual switch in a system that requires all four to be flipped on for light to emanate.

“The artificial warming due to human-caused climate change is making the light brighter,” Williams said.

The authors of the report analyzed weather and climate models to evaluate how a warmer atmosphere is shifting the likelihood of fire weather (meaning conditions that increase the risk of wildfire). They also tracked how a metric called the Fire Weather Index changed over time. The index tracks temperature, relative humidity and wind speeds, all factors that contribute to the likelihood of fire.

The researchers found that the kind of conditions that drove the L.A. area fires are expected to occur on average once in 17 years in today’s climate. Such conditions would have been expected once every 23 years without climate change and would have been less extreme when they did occur, the report says.

A recent report has found that the conditions that fueled the devastating California wildfires were more likely due to climate change than any other factor. The report, conducted by a team of climate scientists and researchers, highlights the role of rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and increased fuel loads in creating the perfect storm for the unprecedented wildfires that swept through the state.

According to the report, the combination of record-breaking heat waves, dry vegetation, and strong winds created ideal conditions for the rapid spread of wildfires in California. These conditions were exacerbated by climate change, which has been linked to more frequent and severe wildfires in recent years.

The report also notes that climate change is projected to continue worsening wildfire conditions in the future, posing a growing threat to communities and ecosystems across California. As temperatures rise and droughts become more severe, the risk of wildfires is expected to increase, making it imperative for policymakers to take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Overall, the report underscores the urgent need for climate action to address the root causes of wildfires in California and protect the state’s residents, wildlife, and natural resources. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in sustainable land management practices, and strengthening wildfire prevention measures, we can help prevent future disasters and build a more resilient future for California.

  • Inside United Airlines flight carnage as six hospitalised due to sudden jolt before emergency landing

Six people were taken to hospital, and many more were injured after a United Airlines flight from Lagos heading to Washington D.C. experienced a sudden in-flight movement.

The United States has opened a probe into the unexpected movement, as the cause is still unknown.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Monday it is investigating the flight that left Lagos, Nigeria in the early hours of Friday morning for what is usually a six-hour flight to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

The NTSB said the incident on United Flight 613 occurred as the Boeing 787 was flying in Ivory Coast airspace, whose authorities have delegated the investigation to the NTSB, Reuters reports.

Data from FlightRadar shows the flight leaving Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at 19 minutes past midnight, and approximately an hour and a half into the flight the plane makes a U-turn over the Ivory Coast and heads back to Nigeria.

The flight then made an emergency landing back in its departure airport in Lagos around three hours after it took off.

Footage on social media shows meal plates and personal items flung onto the floor in the aisle, while passengers can be heard shouting and sounding distressed.

United said in a statement the plane experienced a “technical issue and an unexpected aircraft movement”.

The airline added the plane landed safely in Lagos, where four passengers and two flight attendants were seen in hospital for injuries they sustained, and have since been released.

While the airline described the injuries as “minor”, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (Faan) said the injuries sustained by the six were “serious”. They also added that an additional 27 passengers and five crew members also had minor injuries.

It is unclear what caused the sudden jolt to the plane. United said it was not severe turbulence and that it is “working with aviation authorities in the US and Nigeria to understand the cause”, according to CNN.

The flight was carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants and three pilots at the time of the incident.

Faan said that aerodrome rescue and fire fighting services, as well as medical and security personnel, were already at the gate waiting for the plane’s arrival after the pilot reported distress at 1.20am.

It added that the passengers who did not need to be seen in hospital received first aid and were discharged immediately, while some passengers were also taken to a hotel.

The aircraft itself did not sustain any major damage, Faan said.

The Independent has contacted United for comment.

On a recent United Airlines flight from New York to Los Angeles, chaos erupted as the plane suddenly jolted, causing six passengers to be hospitalized. The frightening incident forced the pilot to make an emergency landing, leaving passengers shaken and in disbelief.

Eyewitnesses described the terrifying moment when the plane experienced severe turbulence, sending passengers and belongings flying through the cabin. Some passengers were seen clutching their seats in fear, while others screamed for help as the plane shook violently.

Emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene as the pilot quickly diverted the flight to the nearest airport for an emergency landing. Upon landing, six passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, which ranged from minor cuts and bruises to more serious injuries.

United Airlines has issued a statement expressing their concern for the well-being of the passengers and their families. The airline is working closely with authorities to investigate the cause of the sudden jolt and ensure the safety of future flights.

As the investigation continues, passengers on the flight are left to grapple with the traumatic experience and the uncertainty of what caused the sudden turbulence. United Airlines has offered their full support to those affected and is working to provide assistance to those in need.

This harrowing experience serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel and the importance of safety precautions. As passengers await more information on the incident, they are left to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
