Among patients with baseline and week 96 biopsies, 39% of the 50mg EFX group (p=0.009) demonstrated ≥1 stage improvement in fibrosis with no worsening of MASH, representing a 24% effect size over placebo at 15%

By ITT analysis, with all missing week 96 biopsies treated as failures, 29% of the 50mg EFX group (p=0.031) demonstrated ≥1 stage improvement in fibrosis with no worsening of MASH, representing a 17% effect size over placebo at 12%

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 27, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Akero Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKRO), a clinical-stage company developing transformational treatments for patients with serious metabolic disease marked by high unmet medical need, today released preliminary topline week 96 results from SYMMETRY, a Phase 2b study evaluating the efficacy and safety of its lead product candidate efruxifermin (EFX) in patients with biopsy-confirmed compensated cirrhosis (F4), Child-Pugh Class A, due to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Among patients with baseline and week 96 biopsies (n=134), 39% of patients treated with 50mg EFX (n=46) (p=0.009) experienced reversal of cirrhosis with no worsening of MASH, compared to 15% for placebo (n=47). In the Intent to Treat (ITT) population (n=181), with all missing week 96 biopsies treated as failures, 29% of patients in the 50mg EFX group (n=63) (p=0.031) experienced reversal of cirrhosis with no worsening of MASH, compared to approximately 12% in the placebo group (n=61).

With more than a doubling of effect size from weeks 36 to 96 in the 50mg group (from 10% to 24%), the SYMMETRY study underscores the benefit of longer EFX treatment for patients with compensated cirrhosis (F4).

In a subgroup of patients with baseline and week 96 biopsies who were not taking GLP-1 at baseline (n=97), 45% in the 50mg EFX group experienced reversal of cirrhosis with no worsening of MASH (n=29) (p=0.009) compared to 17% for placebo (n=36), suggesting that the observed reversal of cirrhosis was not attributable to GLP-1 therapy.

“Until today, we’ve not had the prospect of an effective treatment for compensated cirrhosis due to MASH, which is associated with high rates of short-term morbidity and mortality,” said Mazen Nourredin, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Transplant Hepatologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, and principal investigator for the SYMMETRY study. “Now we have reason to be optimistic about the future potential of EFX as a much-needed treatment for cirrhosis, if approved. I’m so happy for my patients and patients all around the world.”

Akero Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing innovative treatments for serious metabolic diseases, has announced exciting preliminary topline results from its Phase 2b SYMMETRY study. The study evaluated the efficacy of Akero’s investigational drug in treating compensated cirrhosis (F4) due to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).

The results of the study showed a statistically significant reversal of compensated cirrhosis at Week 96, as demonstrated by both completer and intent-to-treat (ITT) analyses. This is a major milestone in the field of liver disease treatment, as compensated cirrhosis is a severe and irreversible stage of liver damage that can lead to life-threatening complications if left untreated.

“We are thrilled to see such promising results from our Phase 2b SYMMETRY study,” said John M. Taylor, CEO of Akero Therapeutics. “The reversal of compensated cirrhosis in patients with MAFLD is a significant achievement and represents a potential breakthrough in the treatment of this debilitating disease.”

These findings signal a potential new treatment option for patients with MAFLD and offer hope for those suffering from advanced liver disease. Akero Therapeutics plans to continue investigating the efficacy and safety of its drug in larger clinical trials, with the goal of bringing this promising therapy to patients in need.

Stay tuned for more updates on Akero Therapeutics and the progress of its investigational drug in the treatment of MAFLD.

  • Sister Wives’ Meri Brown Says None of Us Are Talking’ Due to Lack of ‘Trust’ amid Coyote Pass Sale

Meri Brown is looking out for herself when it comes to her portion of Coyote Pass.

The Sister Wives star opened up about the ongoing drama surrounding the Flagstaff, Ariz. property that she shares with her ex Kody, his wife Robyn and her former sister wife Janelle in an all-new episode on Sunday, Jan. 26.

During a video call, Janelle asks Meri about an email she sent to the group, and Meri explains it was her way of “starting a conversation” about what to do with the property. After a series of email exchanges, Meri recalls how Kody finally decided that he wants to sell the land and he’s going to find a realtor to help him do it.

“I don’t think you get to decide what to do with it,” a frustrated Meri says to Janelle of their ex. “Sorry, you are not the head of my family.”

In a confessional clip, Meri dives deeper into her frustration surrounding the property, including how she thinks everyone has their own agenda.

“I feel like Kody and Robyn probably have some plan of what they want to do, and how they want to handle it,” she says of the sale. “I think that Janelle has some sort of plan, and I know that I do as well.”

She adds, “And none of us are talking to each other because none of us trust each other.”

During the call, Janelle admits she’s been talking to a lawyer about protecting her portion of the property.

After she advises Meri she should do the same, Meri reveals that she’s open to taking legal action as it feels like Kody is keeping her in the dark regarding the details of the sale.

“There’s been a lot of confusion surrounding the way things have been done in the family, the way that Kody is with me and has been with me for many, many years,” she explains. “So I think that’s why I’m going to get a lawyer to help me through this process.”

She notes that she’s ready to put herself first for a change after years of trying to keep the peace between herself and Kody.

“I felt like for quite a few years, I’ve just kind of sat back and just not wanted to ruffle feathers. So I haven’t pushed the issue on many things, but I will push the issue now,” she says.

In a recent Jan. 19 episode, Janelle previously broke the news to her former sister wife, Christine, that she officially hired a lawyer to help her with the “separation of assets” and to make sure the sale is handled fairly.

Christine agreed that’s the right thing to do as Janelle explained she didn’t trust Kody to be fair during the process.

The division of Coyote Pass has been an ongoing point of contention between the exes.

Before their plural marriage fell apart, the group initially bought the land plots so their families could all live close to each other. Christine also had a share of the land, but she sold it back to Kody in August 2022 following their separation. (She was the first to leave the plural marriage in November 2021.)

Robyn is now Kody’s last remaining wife from the original marriage, as Meri and Janelle both announced their separation from Kody within 14 months of Christine leaving.

Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.

Sister Wives’ Meri Brown recently opened up about the strained relationship between her and her sister wives, revealing that they are not speaking to each other due to a lack of trust. The tension between the women has reportedly been escalating as they navigate the sale of their shared property, Coyote Pass.

In a candid post on social media, Meri shared her frustrations about the lack of communication among the group. She expressed her disappointment that none of the sister wives are talking to each other, highlighting the breakdown of trust as a major factor in their current situation.

The sale of Coyote Pass has been a contentious issue for the sister wives, with differing opinions on how to proceed. The ongoing negotiations and disagreements have only exacerbated the existing tensions within the family.

Meri’s honesty about the strained relationships within the sister wives’ dynamic sheds light on the challenges they are facing. As they navigate this difficult time, it is clear that rebuilding trust will be a crucial step towards resolving their issues and moving forward as a united family.

Stay tuned for more updates on the sister wives’ journey as they work through their differences and strive to find common ground amidst the sale of Coyote Pass.

  • Lakers Make Starting Lineup Change Due to Injury vs Warriors

As the NBA’s Rivalry Week comes to a close, it will do so with a marquee matchup on Saturday night against two of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Meeting up in San Francisco at the Chase Center, the Golden State Warriors will host division rivals Los Angeles Lakers, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. PST on ABC.

After appearing on the injury report yesterday, Lakers star forward LeBron James will be active as he’ll face off against Golden State star Stephen Curry. With a long history of NBA Finals matchups, James and Curry now matchup in the twilight of their careers despite both earning All-Star starter honors earlier this week.

While James will be available for Los Angeles tonight, that won’t be the case with veteran forward Rui Hachimura. Nursing a calf injury, Lakers head coach JJ Redick announced that mid-season acquisition Dorian Finney-Smith will replace Hachimura in the starting lineup this evening.

Since arriving from Brooklyn via trade right before the end of the calendar year, Finney-Smith has seen a decrease in his box score numbers since joining the Lakers in a lesser role. Tonight against Golden State, he’ll have the chance to prove himself to Redick and the Lakers coaching staff in his first start for the purple and gold.

Currently split at 12 wins each in their regular season matchup, Finney-Smith will look to help LeBron take the head-to-head crown over Curry with a win tonight.

NBA Admits Big Missed Call in Warriors-Celtics Game

The Los Angeles Lakers have been forced to make a starting lineup change ahead of their matchup against the Golden State Warriors tonight due to an injury to one of their key players.

Starting point guard, LeBron James, will be sidelined for tonight’s game as he continues to recover from a nagging ankle injury. In his place, the Lakers will be starting veteran guard, Russell Westbrook, in the backcourt alongside All-Star guard, Anthony Davis.

This lineup change comes at a crucial time for the Lakers as they look to bounce back from a recent slump and secure a much-needed win against the Warriors. Westbrook will be tasked with facilitating the offense and providing scoring punch in James’ absence, while Davis will look to anchor the defense and dominate in the paint.

Despite the setback, the Lakers remain confident in their ability to compete at a high level and are determined to overcome this injury and come out on top against their Western Conference rivals.

Stay tuned for more updates on LeBron James’ injury status and how the Lakers adjust to this lineup change in tonight’s game against the Warriors. Let’s go Lakers! #LakeShow #LakersNation

  • Extra congestion expected on the Antwerp Orbital Motorway this week due to the installation of a new bridge over the A12

During most of the forthcoming weekend, traffic heading south on the A12 will be unable to join the Antwerp Orbital Motorway at the Antwerp North intersection. This is due to the installation of a site bridge over the A12. The bridge is part of the Oosterweel Link project. Lantis, the company that is coordinating work on the Oosterweel Link calls on motorists to avoid the area if possible. On Saturday in particular congestion is expected as many shoppers as possible from areas to the north of Antwerp head for the shops.

Motorists using the A12 that wish to go to the centre of Antwerp can still use the Ekeren intersection and drive into town via the Noorderlaan. However, this route is likely to be heavily congested. Those wishing to travel further than Antwerp (for example to Ghent) can use the Liefkenshoek toll tunnel for free between 8am and 8pm. With many motorists seeking alternative routes, it is likely to be very busy at the Kleine Bareel intersection between the E19 and the Orbital Motorway.

    Attention drivers in Antwerp!

Please be aware that there will be extra congestion on the Antwerp Orbital Motorway this week due to the installation of a new bridge over the A12. The construction work is expected to cause delays and increased traffic in the area, so we recommend planning ahead and allowing extra time for your commute.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience during this time. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve the infrastructure in our city. Stay safe on the roads!

  • Kia recalls more than 80,000 U.S. autos due to improper air bag deployment and improper wiring

NEW YORK (AP) — Automaker Kia America is recalling more than 80,000 vehicles due to floor wiring beneath the front passenger seat that can become damaged and prevent airbags and seat belts from deploying properly.

Damaged wiring can also cause an unintended side curtain air bag deployment, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall covers 80,255 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Hybrid vehicles.

To remedy the situation, dealers will inspect, replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly, as necessary, for free. In addition, dealers will install wiring covers. Owners will be notified by letters mailed in March.

The recall follows one in November, when Hyundai and Kia recalled over 208,000 electric vehicles to fix a transistor in a charging control unit that could be damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery. That in turn could cause loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Kia recalls over 80,000 U.S. vehicles for air bag and wiring issues

Kia Motors has issued a recall for more than 80,000 vehicles in the United States due to concerns over improper air bag deployment and wiring issues. The affected models include certain 2019 and 2020 Kia Optima, Sorento, and Sportage vehicles.

The air bag deployment issue stems from a programming error that could prevent the air bags from deploying properly in the event of a crash. This could increase the risk of injury to occupants in the vehicle. Additionally, the wiring issue could result in a loss of power to the air bags, further compromising their effectiveness.

Kia is advising owners of the affected vehicles to bring their cars to a Kia dealership for inspection and repair. The necessary repairs will be done free of charge to the owners.

If you own one of the affected Kia models, it is important to take action promptly to ensure the safety of yourself and your passengers. Contact your local Kia dealership for more information on how to schedule a repair appointment.

  • Anguish, despair and grief due to climate crisis are valid psychological responses

You may have read news reports of life threatening and devastating floods, hurricanes and heatwaves, all driven by human-induced climate change. Perhaps you have heard that 2024 is due to be ruled the warmest on record.

You’ll know that without significant and immediate action, lives are at risk from ever more extreme weather. And you despair at the failure of our leaders to take sufficient action at another underwhelming UN climate summit.

This knowledge can feel overwhelming. You might find it challenging to cope with – perhaps you are losing sleep, or finding yourself mulling over worries for your future. You might have already been directly impacted by the changes to our planet as a result of destructive human action.

You might be unsure what can be done, and feel powerless or angry. At the same time, you might feel isolated, with others around you not seeming to recognise the precariousness of our situation.

As psychologists who research psychological responses to the climate emergency, we’re here to tell you something important: you are not alone.

A global survey of 10,000 people aged 16-25 found that climate worries had impacted on the daily functioning, like sleeping and concentrating, of 45% of respondents. In the UK, 73% of those surveyed felt that the future is frightening, with 48% feeling dismissed or ignored when voicing concerns. Subsequent surveys found similarly high rates of distress.

For some people, the proliferation of terms such as “climate anxiety” can feel validating. However these terms risk seeing an individual’s distress as the problem, rather than reflecting an ability to stay connected to the planetary emergencies we are living through.

A different perspective can be offered by what’s known as the power threat meaning framework, or PTMF, which centres the consideration of context when making sense of distress. Challenging the western tendency to see distress as symptomatic of presumed “mental disorders”, the PTMF encourages a focus on asking, “What has happened to you?” rather than, “What is wrong with you?”

    ‘What has happened to you’

As part of Georgina’s now-completed doctoral research, we carried out a series of 30 PTMF-informed interviews with eight people who are distressed about the climate crisis. We recruited climate activists, but a lot of their experiences can be applied to us all, activist or non-activist alike.

The framework was useful in highlighting how people experience a range of meanings and emotions in relation to the climate crisis, such as guilt, responsibility, alienation, despair, grief, powerlessness, anger, hopelessness and hopefulness. We regarded all these different responses as understandable in the context of the climate crisis and its dismissal by others in participants’ lives.

Some of the most useful questions related to social power. For instance, participants told us that differences in social standing impacted on their sense of being heard and included when discussing climate change. Similarly, participants’ experiences were shaped by the negative media coverage of climate activism and societal messages that support the dismissal of the urgent issues participants had been trying to draw attention to.

A PTMF lens supported thinking about how the same threat responses can serve different functions for people at different times. For example, participants said they engaged in forms of climate action to protect against overwhelming emotions or feeling powerless, and to protect loved ones.

While some had felt guilty for not doing more, or not thinking about the climate crisis at all times, use of the PTMF helped them understand how withdrawal and distraction had been valuable threat responses which helped them regulate their feelings, enabling them to continue their activism.

Recognising the climate crisis as a collective trauma is also useful in another way. It supports recognition that many who dismiss or ignore activists’ concerns are doing so to protect themselves against facing the often unbearable reality.

    Climate distress

Whether it is one person or a group, connecting with other people who share similar concerns is key. It’s important that conversations aren’t only focused on actions we can take, but also include a space to process our feelings and responses with supportive others. Know that you are not alone and there is no correct way to feel.

Making some pro-environmental lifestyle changes can help you to feel less powerless. Taking action can help you to feel as though you have done something meaningful. This can involve anything from starting conversations, sharing petitions, writing to your MP or representative, or coming up with your own ideas for influencing positive change in your community.

Find what connects to you personally. It’s important to take breaks though, and go gently with yourself. Use self-care practises and engage in activities that you find soothing. Be kind to yourself and recognise that some pro-environmental actions will not be available to you, for financial or other reasons.

Recognise that your grief, despair, fear and rage all reflect your care and compassion for what is happening to our planet, and your ability to take any action in spite of this pain reflects strength that should be celebrated and nurtured.

Ultimately, though, the solution to climate distress must be much broader than on the individual level. What our research showed was that climate distress is caused by the (in)actions of governments and powerful bodies which are harming our planet and threatening our futures. Significant systemic changes are needed now to act on the climate crisis to protect humanity and support adaptation as climate breakdown progresses.

This article was first published on The Conversation.

The devastating impacts of the climate crisis are not limited to physical destruction and loss of life. The psychological toll of witnessing the destruction of our planet and the suffering of countless individuals and communities is immense.

Anguish, despair, and grief are all valid emotional responses to the climate crisis. It is natural to feel overwhelmed and helpless in the face of such overwhelming challenges. The constant stream of news about wildfires, hurricanes, droughts, and other climate-related disasters can take a heavy toll on our mental health.

It is important to acknowledge and validate these feelings, rather than trying to suppress or ignore them. By allowing ourselves to feel and process these emotions, we can better cope with the reality of the climate crisis and take meaningful action to address it.

If you are struggling with feelings of anguish, despair, or grief related to the climate crisis, know that you are not alone. Reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals for support. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable and just future for all.

  • Rutgers cancels conference due to Trump’s DEI orders

The Rutgers University Center for Minority Serving Institutions canceled an upcoming conference indirectly funded through the U.S. Department of Labor, in response to President Donald Trump’s orders for federal agencies to cease diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

It comes as colleges are closely watching a myriad of orders by Trump, including one that would allow U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement agents to take action on college campuses. Another has paused communications from federal health agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, which is responsible for billions in research funding, at least through Feb. 1.

“Unfortunately, due to President Trump’s Executive Orders … we have been asked to cease all work under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility HUB at Jobs for the Future, which the U.S. Department of Labor funds,” wrote Marybeth Gasman, executive director of the Rutgers center in an email this week to registered participants of the conference on apprenticeship programs.

» READ MORE: ICE has been freed to make arrests at churches. More immigrants took sanctuary in Philadelphia than anywhere else.

The minority serving center wasn’t the only entity impacted at Rutgers. President Jonathan Holloway in a message to Rutgers leaders Friday noted that several offices had reported receiving stop-work orders for federal grant-funded activities involving diversity, equity and inclusion.

Jobs for the Future, which was funding the conference through a $13 million grant, is a nonprofit that works with education and workforce entities to create equitable economic outcomes. Every partner on that grant ― which came through the nonprofit’s diversity, equity and inclusion hub that is funded by the federal labor department ― was told they had to stop that work, Gasman said in an interview. The grant was scheduled to end in June.

Nearly 100 registrants were scheduled to attend the event next week for historically Black colleges to learn more about paid apprenticeship programs from those that already take part in them, she said. Gasman emphasized that the cancellation had nothing to do with it being an HBCU event, but because of the funding source.

When the grant started, she said there were only two HBCUs doing apprenticeship programs, which are especially helpful for students from low-income families to learn and get paid; now there are 21.

Some have questioned why she canceled the event, she said, but without the funding and none of the staff from Jobs for the Future or its partners able to participate, she would have had to find new staff to participate in a short time.

Holloway in his message to the campus community said, “Know we remain committed to building an inclusive community.”

    ‘Watching in real time’

While the conference cancellation is one example of a concrete action taken in response to a Trump initiative, some higher education officials said it was too early to adequately gauge the impact of the executive orders.

“We are watching in real time as the new administration is putting policies in place,” Kate Shaw, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Board of Higher Education, told the board at its meeting Thursday. “I think it’s a little too early to know exactly what the parameters of those policy changes are going to look like.”

Jonathan A. Epstein, interim executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and dean of the Perelman School of Medicine, acknowledged the anxiety among researchers after Trump announced a pause on communication with federal health agencies, including the National Institutes of Health.

NIH provides about $40 billion in funding to 300,000 scientists at about 2,500 universities and research institutions nationwide, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

“Please know that we are working with our academic and government relations colleagues to understand and respond to the potential impact of these events,” Epstein wrote in an email obtained by The Inquirer. “We are working closely with your department chairs and institute/center directors, and we remain focused on our strategic priorities.”

The university, he noted, had adapted before “when new information arrived frequently, but the implications for the future were hard to predict,” citing the early days of the pandemic.

“We are tracking events closely and will continue to share information as it becomes available,” he wrote.

Rutgers in a statement said it also was monitoring the pause on meetings, communications and travel at NIH and would provide guidance to faculty and staff as the university learned more.

In an email to faculty and staff, Drexel University said the changes could potentially affect both those projects already awarded and those awaiting funding, but did not recommend stopping research without consulting with the school’s Office of Research & Innovation.

“We are closely monitoring this dynamic situation,” the email said.

The concern among faculty is palpable.

“There’s an extraordinarily high degree of uncertainty in areas where there has been certainty,” said Eric Feldman, chair of Penn’s faculty senate and a law professor, “ … which has led recipients of federal funding to be unsure both of whether or not they will be able to continue their work as funded and has left grantees uncertain as to whether their proposals will be reviewed in a timely and objective manner.”

In addition, potential ICE agent action at colleges has generated discussion on campuses, though it’s unclear what colleges, which are home to some undocumented students, could do.

“Colleges and universities are not immune to federal law, and there are not many options when law enforcement shows up with a warrant,” said one local higher education official, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the topic.

Temple University said it has in the past, at least since 2009, been visited by ICE under the Administrative Site Visit and Verification Program.

“We have a protocol in place for handling such visits,” said spokesperson Steve Orbanek. “We expect that we would follow the same or a similar protocol if ICE chooses to come to Temple under other programs.”

The university, he said, follows Temple’s visitor’s policy and coordinates visits with appropriate offices. That covers visitors who come to conduct business at the university.

At Rutgers, Holloway said in his message that the school has received no notice that ICE would be on campus, but doesn’t expect that it would. The university, he said, will not share student records unless required by law, and Rutgers’ police department doesn’t ask or document the immigration status of students unless a serious crime occurs.

“Rutgers is committed to ensuring that any federal enforcement actions on campus adhere to due process, including the requirement of a warrant when necessary,” Holloway said.

Rutgers University Cancels Conference in Response to Trump’s DEI Orders

In a bold move, Rutgers University has decided to cancel an upcoming conference on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) following recent orders from the Trump administration. The conference, which was set to address crucial issues surrounding diversity and inclusivity in higher education, has been called off in response to new directives that threaten to undermine progress in these areas.

The university released a statement explaining their decision, citing concerns about the potential impact of the Trump administration’s orders on their ability to effectively address DEI issues. Rutgers officials expressed disappointment that they were forced to cancel the conference, but emphasized that they must prioritize the well-being and rights of their students and faculty in the face of these new challenges.

The cancellation of the conference serves as a powerful statement of defiance against the Trump administration’s attempts to roll back progress in promoting diversity and inclusivity on college campuses. Rutgers is taking a stand in support of the principles of DEI, and their decision to cancel the conference is a testament to their commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive campus community.

As debates over DEI policies continue to unfold at the national level, Rutgers’ bold move to cancel their conference sends a clear message that they will not back down in the face of threats to diversity and inclusivity. The university’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding these values in higher education, and their decision to cancel the conference is a powerful act of resistance against attempts to undermine progress in this crucial area.

  • Genesis Invitational set for Torrey Pines due to L.A. wildfires

The PGA Tour is moving the Genesis Invitational to the South Course at Torrey Pines in San Diego on Feb. 10-16, the tour announced Friday.

The Genesis Invitational, which is hosted by 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, was scheduled to be played at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. The tour announced last week that the event would be moved because of the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area.

Torrey Pines Golf Course is the site of this week’s Farmers Insurance Open, which is being played on the North and South courses, so much of the infrastructure needed for the Genesis Invitational is already in place.

In a news release, the PGA Tour said it plans for the Genesis Invitational to return to Riviera Country Club in 2026.

“As we’ve seen the last two weeks, sports can be a great diversion but an even greater unifier in bringing people together for a common cause,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “Highlighting the resilience of Los Angeles and the need for continued support for the ongoing recovery efforts is what our collective teams are working towards with the playing of The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.”

The Genesis Invitational benefits Woods’ TGR Foundation. He won eight times on the South Course, including the 2008 U.S. Open.

Woods underwent microdecompression surgery on his lower back in September, and it isn’t known whether he will compete in the Genesis Invitational. Last year, Woods withdrew in the second round of the tournament because of illness and was treated with an IV bag at Riviera.

“We are grateful to the city of San Diego and Torrey Pines for hosting the 2025 Genesis Invitational, and to everyone who has reached out in support of the tournament,” Woods said in a statement. “While Riviera remains the home of The Genesis Invitational, we look forward to playing on another championship caliber golf course this year and using the tournament to support those affected by the fires in the Los Angeles area.”

The Genesis Invitational, originally scheduled to take place at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, has been relocated to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego due to the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area.

The decision to move the tournament was made in the interest of safety for players, spectators, and staff, as the air quality in the Los Angeles area has been severely impacted by the fires. Torrey Pines, known for its stunning ocean views and challenging course layout, will now host the prestigious event.

Despite the change in venue, the Genesis Invitational promises to be an exciting and competitive tournament, featuring some of the top players in the world. Fans can still expect to see thrilling golf action and a memorable experience at Torrey Pines.

Stay tuned for updates on the Genesis Invitational as the tournament approaches, and be sure to tune in to see some of the best golfers in the world compete on this iconic course.
