  • Duke Energy Carolinas customer rates drop 6.2% on Jan. 1 due to falling fuel prices

Duke Energy Carolinas customer rates drop 6.2% on Jan. 1 due to falling fuel prices

    • Decrease incorporates benefits from federal Nuclear Production Tax Credits, along with other rider adjustments

    • Annual bills for typical residential customer are $466 below national average

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Duke Energy Carolinas customers in North Carolina will see their electric rates fall starting Jan. 1 as part of an annual adjustment for the cost of fuel used to generate electricity at its power plants, along with other rider adjustments.

    (PRNewsfoto/Duke Energy)
    (PRNewsfoto/Duke Energy)

A typical residential customer in North Carolina using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month will see an overall decrease of $8.96, or about 6.2%, from current rates, falling from $144.31 to $135.35. That is 22% below the national average of $174.21 – a difference of approximately $466 per year.

Commercial customers will benefit from an average decrease in their bills of about 11.5%, and industrial customers will see an average decrease of less than 1%.

Duke Energy Carolinas serves about 2.2 million households and businesses in central and western North Carolina, including Charlotte, Durham and the Triad.

Elsewhere in the state, Duke Energy Progress customers are already benefiting from a 4.5% decrease that went into effect on Dec. 1.

Customer Savings Driven by Falling Fuel Prices

To ensure accurate rates, the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) annually reviews the fuel costs needed to generate electricity for customers, along with rider updates for state programs to encourage clean energy adoption and reduce energy use. The commission approved the following adjustments:

    • A decrease of 8.8% to adjust for falling fuel prices.

    • A decrease of 0.6% resulting from nuclear production tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA); more than half of Duke Energy’s power in the Carolinas comes from carbon-free nuclear.

    • Adjustments of less than 1% to existing riders for customer assistance, storm securitization, and energy efficiency and demand-side management programs to lower energy use.

    • An increase of 2.9% to base rates, as approved last January by the NCUC in its 2024 multiyear rate case order.

The collective result is a 6.2% rate reduction for typical residential customers – in other words, the decrease from fuel more than offset the second-year increase to base rates.

Duke Energy works to actively manage fuel contracts to keep costs as low as possible for customers. Bills reflect actual fuel costs – customers pay what we pay. Learn more at Fuel Costs & Your Bill.

    Duke Energy Carolinas

Duke Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, owns 20,700 megawatts of energy capacity, supplying electricity to 2.9 million residential, commercial and industrial customers across a 24,000-square-mile service area in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Great news for Duke Energy Carolinas customers! Starting on January 1, customer rates will drop by 6.2% thanks to falling fuel prices. This reduction in rates will provide some much-needed relief for customers as they start the new year. Duke Energy Carolinas is committed to providing affordable and reliable energy to their customers, and this rate decrease is just one way they are fulfilling that promise. • Duke Energy and TECO ask for customer rate increases

Duke Energy and TECO ask for customer rate increases

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Thousands of people in Tampa Bay may soon see an increase in their electric bill.

    What You Need To Know

    • TECO and Duke Energy are asking to increase rates for customers
    • TECO is seeking more than $450 million and Duke Energy is trying to recover more than $1 billion
    • Both companies want the increases to begin in March

Duke Energy and TECO are asking the Florida Public Service Commission for restoration costs in response to the summer hurricanes.

It’s a potential rate increase that St. Petersburg resident Noah Neumiller doesn’t want to see.

“It should be a time for giving, not taking from people,” he said.

TECO is seeking more than $450 million and Duke Energy is trying to recover more than $1 billion.

If the Florida PSC approves these requests, all customers would see a rate increase.

The average residential customer for TECO would be around $31 a month, while for a Duke Energy customer, it would be around $21 a month.

While Neumiller said he would be ok, he’s not sure about others in the community.

“30 bucks is a lot of money,” he said. “Let’s be honest. I mean, I have the luxury to spend that, but most people don’t.”

In a press release, TECO said “Restoring power after those storms has more than exhausted the company’s storm reserve, which was established to pay for damage from named storms.”

Duke Energy said they are working to minimize the impact on customer’s bills as much as possible. The overall goal is to strengthen the electric grid to help prevent future issues.

The rate increase for both companies would continue for a year before returning to their current rates.

The Florida PSC has not yet approved the rate increases.

Duke Energy and TECO, two major energy providers in Florida, have recently filed requests with the state’s Public Service Commission to increase customer rates. Duke Energy is seeking a rate increase of about 8% for residential customers, while TECO is asking for a 10% increase.

The companies cite rising costs of maintaining and improving infrastructure, as well as the need to invest in new technologies and renewable energy sources, as reasons for the rate hikes. However, many customers are concerned about the impact these increases will have on their monthly bills.

Both Duke Energy and TECO have stated that they are committed to providing reliable and affordable energy to their customers, but it remains to be seen how the Public Service Commission will respond to their requests. In the meantime, customers are encouraged to stay informed and voice their opinions on the proposed rate increases.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are ‘disliked by Americans’ as duke set for UK return

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are “disliked by Americans” because they “let down the Queen”, a royal biographer has claimed.

Ingrid Seward suggested that their popularity is also falling following comments from Eric Trump and the Californian-based royal’s retreat from public life.

She told The Standard: “I give a lot of talks to Americans and they all dislike Harry and Meghan.

“They hate that they let the Queen down.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s popularity is falling according to a royal expert

    Reuters

She also suggested that people have lost interest in the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

This follows comments from Eric Trump around the time of the US presidential election, where he slammed the royal.

He said: “Truthfully, I don’t give a damn about Prince Harry, and I don’t think this country does either.

“My father loved the Queen, and I think the monarchy is an incredibly beautiful thing.”

Kinsey Schofield, an LA-based royal expert, told the paper that she thinks a lot of Americans will agree with the son of US President-elect Donald Trump.

The American opinion of the royal couple is higher than that in the UK, with more than half,53 per cent, of the US public supporting a positive view, according to YouGov

    PA

In October 2019, three months before Harry and Meghan announced they would step back from working royal duties, the Duke of Sussex was liked by 71 per cent and disliked by 22 per cent of the British public.

Data from last August shows that only 30 per cent of people now hold a favourable opinion of him, while 60 per cent disapprove, according to data from Statista.

However, the American opinion of the royal couple is higher than that in the UK – with more than half, 53 per cent, of the US public supporting a positive view, according to YouGov.

The ratings come after the youngest son of King Charles criticised the Royal Family in the infamous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, a record-breaking Netflix documentary and the prince’s memoir Spare in 2023.

These accusations have caused a Royal Family rift, with Harry thought to not be on speaking terms with Prince William or King Charles.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have adopted a new business strategy to help revive their reputation, making more solo appearances to appeal to their different differing interests and individual demographics.

Prince Harry appeared on the East Coast at The New York Times DealBook Conference, answering questions surrounding his relationship with Meghan Markle following speculation.

He said: “Apparently we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?”

“Once you stop reading the stuff about yourself, you automatically remove their power.”

Prince Harry is set to return to the UK for the trial against News Group Newspapers in January 2025.

The 40-year-old accused The Sun publisher of unlawful information gathering by journalists and private investigators between 1996 and 2011.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are ‘disliked by Americans’ as duke set for UK return

Recent polls show that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not as popular with Americans as they once were. The couple, who stepped down as senior members of the royal family last year, have faced criticism for their controversial decisions and public statements.

With Prince Harry set to return to the UK for the unveiling of a statue of his late mother, Princess Diana, many Americans are expressing their disapproval of the couple. Some have cited their lavish lifestyle, outspoken political views, and strained relationship with the royal family as reasons for their dislike.

Despite this backlash, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue to be a prominent presence in the media and are actively involved in philanthropic efforts. It remains to be seen how their reputation will evolve in the coming years.

  • A look at Duke alumna Katharine Parker, pretrial judge in federal case against CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione

A look at Duke alumna Katharine Parker, pretrial judge in federal case against CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione

A Duke alumna will have a pivotal role in the case of Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate accused of killing UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Officer Brian Thompson in a Dec. 4 shooting.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker, who is presiding over Mangione’s federal pretrial hearings, graduated cum laude from Duke with a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1989. As the pretrial judge, she oversees preliminary hearings regarding the use of evidence but is not expected to preside over Mangione’s trial.

Mangione’s federal charges include two counts of stalking, one count of a firearms offense and one count of murder through the use of a firearm, the latter of which carries the potential for a death sentence.

Mangione is also facing charges at the state level in Pennsylvania and New York. He pleaded not guilty to the New York state charges Monday.

    Who is Katharine Parker?

During Parker’s time at Duke, she was a member of the club rowing team, a summer 1989 night editor for The Chronicle, a candidate for Young Trustee and a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Fordham University in 1992.

After graduating, Parker clerked for Warren Eginton, U.S. district judge for the District of Connecticut. She then joined Proskauer Rose LLP as an associate — later becoming a partner at the firm — where she practiced labor and employment law and chaired several legal practice groups. Her litigation career also included cases related to fair housing, non-compete agreements and civil rights issues.

At Proskauer, Parker was elected a fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and named on the Best Lawyers in America list for seven consecutive years. She has also served as chair of the Disability Law Committee for the New York City Bar and received numerous awards for pro bono work and charitable service.

In 2016, Parker was appointed to her current role as federal magistrate judge for the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York.

Parker’s husband, Bret Parker, served as vice president and assistant general counsel of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals from 2004 until 2009. When Wyeth was acquired by Pfizer, a multinational pharmaceutical company, he retained a transitional role at the company until 2010, according to a LinkedIn page under his name.

    Mangione’s arrest and charges

Mangione, a 26-year-old who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science, faces an 11-count indictment in New York — which includes state charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Mangione also faces five counts in Pennsylvania, which include possession of an unlicensed firearm, providing false identification to police and forgery.

The charges against Mangione follow the highly publicized fatal shooting of Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on the morning of Dec. 4.

A masked gunman — who was “lying in wait,” according to Jessica Tisch, New York Police Department commissioner — shot Thompson in the back and calf just before 7 a.m. Thompson, who was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m., was believed to be commuting to a hotel hosting a UnitedHealthcare investors’ conference.

Several news outlets reported that shell casings at the scene of the killing were marked with the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” though authorities later clarified that the casings said “delay” and not “defend.”

“Delay, Deny, Defend” is the title of a 2010 book by Jay Feinman, distinguished professor emeritus at Rutgers Law School, about strategies used by insurance companies to deny claims. The terms reflect verbiage that has become commonly used by critics of the health insurance industry in particular.

Mangione was arrested Dec. 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a several-day manhunt.

According to federal prosecutors, Mangione had a notebook at the time of his arrest expressing grievances with the health care industry and wealthy executives. Prosecutors allege that it included language stating that “the target is insurance,” detailing the author’s intent to “wack” an insurance company CEO at an investor conference and noting “to the feds” that the suspect was working individually.

Additionally, Mangione was found in possession of a 3D-printed pistol and a black silencer, according to police. The gun, which appeared to have no serial number, is now undergoing “ballistic testing” to determine whether it aligns with the weapon used to kill Thompson.

Federal prosecutors claim that Mangione had planned the attack over several months with the goal of drawing attention to insurance industry practices.

Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, described the state and federal prosecutors as representing “warring jurisdictions,” claiming that she was “very concerned” about Mangione’s right to a fair trial. She accused the prosecutors of presenting “conflicting theories,” politicizing Mangione’s case and treating him like a “spectacle.”

“Is there one case? Two cases? Two investigations? Is it a joint investigation?” Friedman Agnifilo reportedly asked Parker during a Dec. 19 appearance in federal court.

In particular, Friedman Agnifilo criticized law enforcement officials for what she described as “the biggest-staged perp walk [she’d] ever seen in [her] career” on Dec. 19, which was attended by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“It was absolutely unnecessary. He’s been cooperative with law enforcement,” Friedman Agnifilo said, also suggesting that the mayor’s presence was “political” and criticizing him for speaking with “future potential jurors.”

Adams is currently facing a five-count federal indictment that includes charges of bribery and fraud, for which he appeared before Parker to plead not guilty in September.

Mangione is expected to appear in federal court Jan. 18 and in New York state court Feb. 21. According to prosecutors, the New York case is anticipated to go to trial first, and the Pennsylvania case is planned to be revisited following the adjudication of Mangione’s murder charges.

He is currently being held without bail at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.

    Discourse surrounding rising health costs

Following his arrest, Mangione has become the subject of a widespread public support campaign — which has included “Free Luigi” merchandise, legal defense funds and courthouse protests. The support comes alongside public expressions of frustration with high health care costs and frequent health insurance claim denials.

A September survey by consulting firm Mercer found that U.S. employers anticipate health insurance costs will rise 5.8% on average in 2025, which would mark the third consecutive year of over-five-percent increases in health care costs for employers.

The American Medical Association recently reported that U.S. health spending increased by 4.1% in 2022 to $4.5 trillion — $13,493 per capita — compared to the previous year. Between 1962 and 2022, percent GDP spent on health care costs in the U.S. increased from 5% to 17%.

An analysis from independent research organization KFF found that 17% of in-network health insurance claims were denied in 2021 across “HealthCare.gov insurers” with complete data, though rates varied “drastically” among plan issuers. A separate 2023 KFF survey found that 18% of insured adults experienced claim denials in the previous year, with the highest denial rate reported by those with employer-sponsored insurance plans compared to those with government-issued or marketplace plans.
