  • Thomas Massie and Mike Lee advocate for US to dump NATO

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Sen. Mike Lee are advocating for the U.S. to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organiation (NATO).

“If you could snap your fingers and get us out of NATO today, would you?” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, asked in a post on X.

    “Yes,” Massie replied.

The House lawmaker has previously called the alliance — which includes the U.S. and scads of other nations — a “Cold War relic.”

“I would withdraw us from NATO,” Massie said, the Washington Post reported in 2022. “It’s a Cold War relic. Our involvement should have ceased when the [Berlin] wall fell and the Soviet Union collapsed.”

Lee has been critical of the NATO alliance, describing it as a “great deal for Europe,” but a “raw deal for America.”

The senator has called for the U.S. to consider departing NATO, and has in some cases explicitly endorsed the prospect of a U.S. withdrawal.

“NATO members must pay up now,” Lee asserted in a tweet. “If they don’t—and maybe even if they do—the U.S. should seriously consider leaving NATO,” he continued. “We won the Cold War,” the senator noted. “A long time ago, in fact.”

“Amen!” Lee exclaimed in a tweet when responding to someone who had declared, “Let’s leave NATO.”

“Let’s go!” the lawmaker wrote in response to two separate posts suggesting that President Donald Trump should withdraw the U.S. from NATO.

Part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024, which was signed by President Joe Biden in late 2023, placed into U.S. law language that declares, “The President shall not suspend, terminate, denounce, or withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty, done at Washington, DC, April 4, 1949, except by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, provided that two-thirds of the Senators present concur, or pursuant to an Act of Congress.”

In a recent controversial move, Representatives Thomas Massie and Mike Lee have come out in favor of the United States withdrawing from NATO. The lawmakers argue that the alliance is outdated and no longer serves the interests of the American people.

Massie and Lee have long been critical of NATO, questioning the need for the US to be involved in costly overseas military operations. They argue that the US should focus on its own security and not be tied down by commitments to other countries.

The lawmakers’ stance has sparked debate among their colleagues in Congress, with many voicing concerns about the implications of withdrawing from NATO. Critics argue that the alliance has been a key factor in maintaining peace and stability in Europe for decades.

Despite the controversy, Massie and Lee remain steadfast in their belief that the US should cut ties with NATO. They have called for a national conversation on the issue and are pushing for a formal vote in Congress on the matter.

As the debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Massie and Lee’s advocacy for the US to dump NATO will gain traction or be met with opposition. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Sunday snow storm could dump half a foot in tri-state – NBC New York

The first snow totals are in and Sunday’s storm is delivering in a big way for parts of New York and New Jersey.

After a brief afternoon lull, snow began picking back up in New York City and will continue as temperatures drop below freezing Sunday evening.

Snow totals between 3-5 inches are still expected for the city, with greater amounts eyeing the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey.

New Jersey got off to a strong start, but there are plenty of area’s in the Hudson Valley that are in competition. Here’s a look at where snow has started accumulating:

    NEW JERSEY

    NEW YORK

    NYC METRO AREA

Check the latest weather alerts for your neighborhood here.

Inland parts of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut have been under winter storm warnings since 1 p.m. Sunday and were expected to last until 4 a.m. Monday. New York City, Long Island and coastal parts of the tri-state will fall under a winter weather advisory until 4 a.m. Monday.

In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency on Saturday.

“As always, I urge all New Jerseyans to use caution, follow all safety protocols, and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary,” Murphy said in a statement.

    Snow forecast amounts

We expect a general 3 to 5 inches in the New York City metro area. Further inland parts of northern New Jersey, upper Hudson Valley and into Connecticut, 5 to 8 inches are likely. And some higher elevation areas of northwest New Jersey, the hills of Connecticut and northern part of the Hudson Valley could get as much as a foot of snow.

If banding becomes very intense, we could see totals on the upper end of the ranges, with a few spots even overperforming. But if the colder air takes longer to move in, we could see totals on the lower end of the ranges, especially near the coast.

The MTA said it is monitoring the weather conditions but, as of Sunday morning, has made no changes to the planned weekend and holiday scheduled service.

The snow that falls on Sunday is not melting any time soon. Temperatures will fall dramatically behind the storm leading to icy roads and slick travel on Monday.

Temperatures next week plummet into the teens and 20s for several days; morning lows fall to the single digits in the city.

We’ll experience the coldest blast of air of the season, with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday being the worst.  Morning wind chills on those days could be sub-zero, making for downright dangerous conditions.

The end of January is climatologically the coldest time of year for Central Park. And this year is certainly delivering in that regard.

Winter weather is making a fierce comeback this weekend as a Sunday snowstorm is set to hit the tri-state area. Meteorologists are predicting that the storm could dump up to half a foot of snow in certain areas, causing potential hazards for drivers and commuters.

The storm is expected to start late Saturday night and continue through Sunday, with the heaviest snowfall expected in the morning and early afternoon. Residents are advised to prepare for treacherous road conditions and potential delays in transportation.

Stay tuned to NBC New York for the latest updates on this developing weather situation, and make sure to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this winter storm.

  • Winter storm to dump snow on I-95 corridor

NEW YORK – The heavily traveled northeastern portion of the Interstate 95 corridor is expected to experience a significant bout of snow as a winter storm strengthens along the coastline.

The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the potential for a widespread area of 1-3 inches of snow to start falling on Sunday evening from Washington, D.C. to Boston, with 5-8″ amounts expected to the north and west of Interstate 95.

Due to the expected snowfall in combination with dangerously cold air, the governor of New Jersey has issued a state of emergency and told residents to be ready to brace for below-zero wind chills.

“Following this weekend’s snow, we are expecting extreme cold with wind chills reaching -10° or below. Dangerously cold conditions are expected to persist through most of next week. Please limit your time outdoors and keep your pets inside as much as possible,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement on Saturday.

Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, schools, banks, and other services that would normally be in session on Monday have the day off, which will help keep roads clear for snow removal crews.

More than 30 million residents from the Appalachians to the Northeast are under some type of winter weather alert, which includes Boston, New York and Philadelphia.

Depending on how much snow falls, the system could produce the largest accumulations of the season for a region that has otherwise seen significant snowfall deficits.

Philadelphia sits at around 5″ of snowfall below normal, with New York City closer to half a foot behind what typically accumulates during the first half of winter.

Included in the zone of sleet and snow is the nation’s capital, where accumulations could reach 1-3 inches before the start of the 60th Presidential Inauguration on Monday.

The president-elect’s team said due to concerns over brutally cold air following the precipitation, most major inaugural events will take place indoors, which is a break from long-standing tradition.

Agencies around Washington, D.C. had been preparing for months for outdoor events, including a parade and the swearing-in ceremony.

The high temperature is expected to reach the mid 20s on Monday, which will plummet to near zero by Wednesday evening as the full scope of the Arctic air mass entrenches itself over the eastern two-thirds of the nation.

In all, more than 300 million people are expected to see below average temperatures as the coldest air of the season invades the nation.

Due to the threat of hypothermia, many communities from the U.S.-Canadian border to Florida plan to open warming centers so that those without shelter will have a temporary housing option.

Drivers should be prepared for hazardous road conditions, reduced visibility, and potential delays as the storm moves through. It is important to stay informed of weather updates and road closures, and to exercise caution while navigating the roads.

  • New England snowstorm forecast to dump a few inches to half a foot

New England could potentially get hit with its largest snowstorm of the season Sunday night, expected to dump 6 inches or more of snow across Boston and coastal areas. Or, a much milder system carrying a lot less snow could unfold, meaning that once again it’s going to come down to the exact track this storm takes.

Here’s the general setup: An area of low pressure begins taking shape across the Southeast or just off the Carolina coast on Sunday morning and begins to crawl up a frontal boundary that is stalled over New England. As it approaches, the storm will draw in warmer air and moisture off the Atlantic while cold air is pulled in from the north.

Moisture surging from the south and the steep temperature difference will set up a solid rain-snow line with this storm. Unfortunately, we won’t know for sure where that rain-snow line will fall until the weekend arrives and we have a clearer picture. It could set up south of New England or set up between Boston and the Cape.

A low pressure will develop out of the Carolinas and track along the boundary toward New England on Sunday.Boston Globe

The eventual storm track will also determine whether New England sees a modest snowfall of 2 to 4 inches or higher accumulations of possibly 5 inches or more. But the region, especially across much of Southern New England, will definitely see some snow on the ground come Monday morning.

These are the projected snowfall totals as of now, with the different models taken into consideration:

These are the estimated snowfall totals from Sunday night’s storm.Boston Globe

What the detailed models are saying

The strength of the cold front will determine whether the storm is bumped farther offshore or not. Take a look at how the Euro and GFS models are tracking this system below.

The GFS model has the storm moving closer to New England, which would bring heavier snow during a shorter window, meaning 5 to 8 inches of snow, with the bulk of it concentrated along coastal New England.

The GFS is a bit more bullish on this storm, drawing it closer to New England and producing heavy snow across coastal areas.Pivotal Weather

Here’s where the GFS is placing the core of the storm cutting over Cape Cod around 8 p.m., Sunday, which places Boston in the snow zone.

The GFS model places the core of the storm passing over Cape Cod Sunday night.Boston Globe

The Euro model, however, has the storm slipping slightly to the south, which would bring lighter accumulations of 2 to 4 inches of snow across New England.

The Euro shows the track more offshore, making for lighter snow accumulation across Southern New England.Pivotal Weather

The Globe Weather HQ model combines elements from the Euro, GFS, and others. This would push Boston toward more of a wintry mix and reduce the amount of snow for the city.

The Globe Weather HQ model has the core of the storm cutting in closer to Boston, which would reduce the amount of snow in the city, southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.Boston Globe

Still, other models seem to be siding more with the Euro, predicting lighter snow totals, according to Globe meteorologist Dave Epstein:

Regardless, it appears that this storm will be in and out of the region quickly, with most of the precipitation falling Sunday night and during the overnight hours.

The snow is expected to start falling between 5 and 7 p.m., Sunday and be over by early morning on Monday.

    Estimated snowfall totals

As far as storm totals go, it looks like Boston and much of Coastal and Southern New England are in for at least several inches of snow.

The details will be sorted out in the coming days, but should the track lean closer to what the GFS is initializing, then we could possibly be in for the largest storm of the season with much of Southern New England picking up at least 6 inches of snow.

Looking at all factors, the safe bet would be that folks across Southern New England can end up in a window of 3 to 6 inches from Sunday evening through early Monday morning.

The GFS snow totals possibly reaching at least 6 inches across much of Southern New England, including Boston.Pivotal Weather
The Euro model shows lighter snow of about 2 to 3 inches across eastern parts of Southern New England and less snow across inland areas.Pivotal Weather

We’ll continue to monitor this potential storm and continue to update the impacts, but be ready to break out the shovels come Monday morning.

Utica declares snow emergency; dump truck rolls over highway ramp

The City of Utica has declared a snow emergency due to a winter storm hitting Central New York and other parts of Upstate New York.

The Utica snow emergency takes effect tonight, Thursday, Jan. 2, at 10 p.m. All vehicles must be removed from city streets by 10 p.m. to facilitate safe passage for snow removal and emergency services, Mayor Michael P. Galime said.

Any vehicles left on the streets after the emergency takes effect are subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense. The snow emergency will remain in effect until further notice, Galime said.

The snowstorm and slick road conditions caused a dump truck to roll over on a highway ramp Thursday morning, according to the Observer-Dispatch. Photos released by the Utica Fire Department show the truck upside down with its load spilled out over the edge.
