  • Ollie Watkins opens up on Jhon Duran competition at Aston Villa

The England international acknowledges he has never been pushed so hard by a team-mate during his time at the club, with Duran currently topping the scoring charts with 12 goals in all competitions.

Watkins leads the way in the Premier League after taking his tally to nine for the season in Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Everton.

But the 29-year-old last month found himself out of the starting XI for the first time in Unai Emery’s reign due to Duran’s excellent form and pointed to the pair being rarely paired together in matches as a key difference to his previous battle with Danny Ings, who was sold to West Ham two years ago.

Watkins said: “I have had competition with Ingsy before but not to the point like this.

“Me and Ingsy used to play up front together. With Jhon I have not played too much with him.

“Look, Jhon has been top this season. Whenever he has come on he has taken his chance and he has helped us out so many times. It is nice to have that competition and have that quality in the squad.”

Wednesday’s goal was Watkins’ first from open play since November and a timely reminder of his quality on a night Emery kept him in the line-up, despite Duran being available again following a three-match suspension.

The Colombia international was an unused substitute at Goodison Park but is certain to be involved in some capacity when Villa visit Arsenal on Saturday and then head to Monaco next Tuesday in the Champions League.

Emery’s men sit just two points behind fifth-placed Chelsea in the league and Watkins was encouraged by the manner they ground out Wednesday’s win, having let several opportunities slip earlier in the season.

“Ipswich, Bournemouth at home, Palace, Brighton. There have been quite a few times I feel we should have come away with three points,” he said.

“If we had just seen those games out we would be much higher in the league and things would be similar to last season.

“But that is not always the way. It is something to build on.

“We have done the hard part. Goodison is one of the toughest grounds to go to. If we can do it there, we can do it anywhere.

“You see how tight the league is. A lot of teams have improved, like Forest, Bournemouth. You would not think they would be up there.

“Teams who were at the bottom of the league last season are flourishing. It is difficult. Everyone is improving.

“Everyone is playing a good style of football, so it’s difficult. We just need to focus on ourselves, keep picking up points, picking up the wins and see where we are at the end of the season.”

New signing Donyell Malen is expected to be available at the Emirates after completing his move from Borussia Dortmund.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has spoken out about the healthy competition he faces from teammate Jhon Duran for a starting spot in the team.

In a recent interview, Watkins acknowledged the talent and work ethic of Duran, stating that the competition between them pushes both players to perform at their best.

“Jhon is a fantastic player and a great teammate. We push each other in training every day to improve and earn our spot in the starting lineup,” Watkins said.

The 25-year-old striker also emphasized the importance of having competition within the squad, as it drives the team to achieve success.

“Competition is healthy for any team. It keeps everyone on their toes and ensures that we are constantly working to improve and earn our place in the team,” Watkins added.

With both players vying for a starting spot, Aston Villa fans can expect to see a fierce battle between Watkins and Duran as they compete for goals and victories on the pitch.

  • Red Sox, Jarren Duran Avoid Arbitration

The Red Sox announced Friday that they’ve agreed to a one-year deal with outfielder Jarren Duran, avoiding arbitration. The BJB Group client reportedly receives a $3.85MM guarantee on a complex deal that also contains 2025 incentives and an $8MM club option for 2026 that can climb as high as $12MM based on escalators. Duran will be paid a $3.75MM salary, and the ’26 option comes with a $100K buyout.

Duran is already under club control through the 2028 season as a Super Two player. Even if the 2026 option is bought out — which would occur if the Red Sox feel his projected price in the arb process checked in south of the eventual option value — he would remain arbitration-eligible with the Sox for another three seasons. With Duran’s salary now locked in, the Red Sox have avoided arbitration hearings with their entire class (Duran, Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford).

In addition to his 2025 guarantee, Duran will earn $50K bonuses for reaching 450, 500 and 550 plate appearances. So long as he’s healthy, he should get the $4MM salary at which he filed. (The Red Sox had countered with a $3.5MM submission.)

As for the 2026 option, the base price will reportedly jump to $9MM if Duran finishes between 11th and 20th in AL MVP voting. (He finished eighth on the MVP ballot this past season.) It’ll be a $10MM option if he finishes between sixth and tenth, or an $11MM option if he lands second through fifth. If Duran is named the American League’s Most Valuable Player, the price of that option would jump to $12MM. If Duran is traded at any point between now and season’s end, the option would be eliminated and he’d receive a $100K assignment bonus from the acquiring team rather than the $100K buyout on said option.

Duran, who turned 28 in September, broke out with a monster 2024 showing this past season. In 735 trips to the plate, he logged a massive .285/.342/.492 batting line (129 wRC+) with 21 home runs, 48 doubles, 14 triples and 34 stolen bases (in 41 tries). The former top prospect walked at a career-best (but still below-average) 7.3% clip and slashed his strikeout rate to a lower-than-average 21.8%. For a player who punched out in 35.7% of his 112 plate appearances during 2021’s MLB debut, he’s made remarkable strides in his contact ability and swing decisions.

The Red Sox, like virtually every big league club, adopt the “file and trial” approach wherein they cut off negotiations on strict one-year deals after exchanging figures with a player. (The Cubs, notably, broke the near leaguewide file-and-trial approach to sign Kyle Tucker to a one-year deal yesterday.) The inclusion of a 2026 option on the contract, however, means that for arbitration purposes, Duran’s agreement is considered a multi-year deal. That option renders the Duran contract ineligible/inadmissible as a comp or data point in future negotiations (for the Sox and other teams) in one-year arbitration talks with other players.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com first reported Duran’s salary and option value. , bringing the total guarantee to $3.85MM. The 2026 option can climb as high as $12MM based on escalators tied to MVP voting and All-MLB honors, per Cotillo, Robert Murray of FanSided and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com added various financial details, while Alex Speier of the Boston Globe first reported the full breakdown of Duran’s option escalators.

The Boston Red Sox and outfielder Jarren Duran have successfully avoided arbitration by agreeing to a new contract. Duran, who made his MLB debut in 2021, has quickly become a key player for the Red Sox, showcasing his speed and defensive skills in the outfield.

By reaching a deal before arbitration, both parties have avoided a potentially contentious negotiation process. The terms of the new contract have not been disclosed, but it is likely that Duran will receive a significant raise from his previous salary.

With Duran locked in for the upcoming season, the Red Sox can focus on building a strong roster to compete in the highly competitive AL East. Fans are excited to see what Duran can accomplish in his sophomore season and are hopeful that he can help lead the team to success.

Overall, this agreement is a positive development for both the Red Sox and Duran, setting the stage for a successful partnership in the future.

  • Jarren Duran signs 1-year contract with club option with Red Sox

was among the top players in the American League during the 2024 season, and on Friday, the 28-year-old outfielder was financially rewarded for his performance.

The Red Sox announced they agreed to terms on a one-year contract featuring a 2026 club option with Duran, a first-year arbitration-eligible player who had not previously settled prior to the Jan. 9 deadline to do so. A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that Duran will receive $3.75 million this year, with a $100,000 buyout on the option, which is worth $8 million.

The club did not announce the terms of the agreement, which also features incentives. Duran’s 2026 option has escalators based on AL MVP Award finishes and/or All-MLB placement, and he could earn up to $150,000 in performance bonuses in ‘25, a source told Feinsand.

Boston has no remaining players eligible for salary arbitration, so it will avoid going to a hearing.

Duran had a breakout year in 2024, when he finished eighth in the AL MVP voting. The ‘18 seventh-round Draft pick led the Majors in doubles (48) and tied for the MLB lead in triples (14) while hitting .285 with 21 home runs, 75 RBIs and an .834 OPS over 160 games. His 8.7 bWAR ranked fifth in the Majors and fourth in the AL.

Thanks to that offensive performance as the Red Sox’s everyday leadoff hitter — and the strong outfield defense to go along with it, including 12 assists — Duran was named to the All-MLB second team.

Before last season, Duran had shown flashes of his potential during his big league career, which began in 2021. His best showing to that point had come in ‘23, when he hit .295 with an .828 OPS over 102 games. He took another big step forward in ‘24.

Last July, Duran became the first Red Sox player to hit a home run in the All-Star Game since Adrián González in 2011, swatting the decisive go-ahead two-run homer in the AL’s 5-3 victory at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Duran was the fifth Boston player to earn MVP honors at the Midsummer Classic, joining Carl Yastrzemski (1970), Roger Clemens (‘86), Pedro Martinez (‘99) and J.D. Drew (2008).

In 2025, Duran will look to lead Boston back to the postseason for the first time since ‘21. He has yet to participate in a playoff game during his four-year big league career, but that could change this upcoming season, as the Sox will aim to contend in the AL East.

Duran was the fourth and final arb-eligible player on the Red Sox roster to agree to terms. They avoided arbitration with left-hander Garrett Crochet ($3.8 million) and righties Tanner Houck ($3.95 million) and Kutter Crawford ($2.75 million) last week.

The Boston Red Sox have officially signed outfielder Jarren Duran to a 1-year contract with a club option for the 2023 season. The exciting young prospect has shown tremendous potential in the minor leagues and is poised to make an impact at the major league level.

Duran, who was selected by the Red Sox in the 7th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, has quickly risen through the ranks of the organization with his impressive speed, athleticism, and hitting ability. In 2021, he made his major league debut and showcased his skills with his speed on the basepaths and solid defense in the outfield.

With this new contract, the Red Sox are showing their commitment to Duran and their belief in his ability to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season. Fans can look forward to seeing Duran continue to develop and make a name for himself in the Red Sox lineup.

Stay tuned for more updates on Jarren Duran and the Red Sox as they prepare for the 2022 season. Let’s go Red Sox! #JarrenDuran #RedSoxNation

  • Jarren Duran, Red Sox reach $3.85M deal to avoid arbitration

BOSTON — All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran and the Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration when they agreed Friday to a one-year contract guaranteeing $3.85 million, a deal that includes an $8 million team option for 2026.

Duran gets a $3.75 million salary for this year, and the option has a $100,000 buyout.

The option price would increase to $9 million if he finishes among the top 20 in MVP voting, to $10 million if he is among the top 10, to $11 million if among the top five and to $12 million if he wins the honor. If he is not among the top 20 and is picked for second team All-MLB, the option price would be $8.5 million.

He can earn $150,000 in performance bonuses this year for plate appearances: $50,000 each for 450, 500 and 550.

If he is traded, the option would be eliminated and the receiving team would owe him a $100,000 assignment bonus.

Eligible for arbitration for the first time, Duran had asked for a raise from $760,000 to $4 million and had been offered $3.5 million when figures were exchanged last week.

Duran was eighth in MVP voting last year after hitting .285 with 21 homers, 75 RBI, 34 steals, 48 doubles and 111 runs.

Fifteen players remain on track for arbitration hearings.

The Boston Red Sox have reached a $3.85 million deal with outfielder Jarren Duran to avoid arbitration. The 25-year-old speedster had a breakout season in 2021, hitting .270 with five home runs and 12 stolen bases in 46 games.

Duran is considered one of the top prospects in the Red Sox organization and is expected to play a key role in the team’s outfield in the upcoming season. The speedy outfielder is known for his elite speed on the basepaths and his ability to cover ground in the outfield.

The Red Sox were able to reach a deal with Duran before the arbitration deadline, ensuring that the young outfielder will remain with the team for the foreseeable future. With Duran’s combination of speed and power, he is poised to be a key contributor to the Red Sox lineup in the years to come.
