Eagles make Saquon Barkley decision with NFL rushing record on line vs. Giants

There will be no Saquon Barkley record-breaking party Sunday.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed Wednesday that Philadelphia will be resting players, including Barkley, in Week 18 vs. the Giants as it prepares for the playoffs after winning the NFC East.

Barkley, 27, ends his season with 2,005 rushing yards, just 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105 yards set in 1984.

Barkley, who spent the first six years of his career with the Giants after being drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in 2018 was swiped away by the division rival Eagles in free agency.

The three-year contract for $37.75 million has immediately paid dividends for the Eagles, as they are 13-3 going into the season’s final week after missing the playoffs the year prior.

General manager Joe Schoen had previously acknowledged during the behind-the-scenes MAX show, “Hard Knocks,” that the Giants could not pay Barkley as well as Daniel Jones an exorbitant salary.

Jones played his way off the team with a terrible 2024 campaign; he was later cut and then added to the Vikings practice squad.

Big Blue comes into Sunday with the inverse record of the Eagles (3-13) and is currently slated to draft No. 4 overall come April

Starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is still in concussion protocol and is also not expected to play in what is a meaningless game for the Eagles, who are locked into the No. 2 seed and will host either the Commanders or Packers in the wild-card round.

This news, while good for those hoping not to see the Giants embarrassed by Barkley, could be bad for those Giants fans hoping to tank for a higher draft pick, as Big Blue could mostly be going against backups in a game that won’t affect Philadelphia’s playoff seeding.

With a win, Big Blue could fall as low as the No. 9 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a pivotal decision regarding star running back Saquon Barkley as they prepare to face off against the New York Giants in a crucial NFC East matchup. With the NFL rushing record on the line, the Eagles have decided to unleash Barkley and give him the opportunity to showcase his talents against his former team.

Barkley, who was drafted by the Giants in 2018 before being traded to the Eagles earlier this season, has been a dynamic playmaker for Philadelphia since his arrival. He has the ability to break off big runs and make defenders miss in the open field, making him a threat to set the NFL rushing record in any given game.

With the Eagles in need of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the decision to lean on Barkley in this pivotal matchup could be a game-changer. The Giants will have their hands full trying to contain the explosive running back, and if Barkley is able to break the NFL rushing record, it could be the difference-maker in this crucial divisional showdown.

As the Eagles and Giants prepare to square off with the NFL rushing record on the line, all eyes will be on Barkley to see if he can deliver a record-breaking performance and lead Philadelphia to a much-needed victory. Stay tuned for what promises to be an electrifying matchup between two bitter rivals with everything on the line.

Eagles’ Saquon Barkley, on cusp of record, to sit out vs. Giants

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles running back Saquon Barkley likely will sit out Sunday’s regular-season finale against the New York Giants, coach Nick Sirianni said, putting an end to his chase of the single-season rushing record.

With Philadelphia’s postseason seeding secured, Sirianni suggested Barkley will be one of the starters who will rest as the Eagles gear up for the playoffs.

“He will probably be somebody that rests,” Sirianni said.

If so, Barkley will end the regular season 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson’s NFL record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984.

“Obviously it’s a very special record that’s been standing for a very long time by a great player. It’s a team record that everybody’s involved in. You weigh all those things. But at the end of the day, you just try to do what’s best for the team.”

Nick Sirianni

Whether he should have the opportunity to go for the rushing title was a hot point of debate in Philadelphia and beyond this week. The Eagles (13-3) have clinched the NFC East division title and are locked into the NFC’s No. 2 seed, making the Giants game irrelevant from a playoff positioning perspective.

With a Week 5 bye, Philadelphia has played 12 straight games, which factored into the decision to sit some core players.

“Obviously it’s a very special record that’s been standing for a very long time by a great player. It’s a team record that everybody’s involved in. You weigh all those things,” Sirianni said. “But at the end of the day, you just try to do what’s best for the team. When the bye was, how guys are feeling, the bumps and bruises we can take care of. We’ve put ourselves in a position to be in this situation … It wasn’t the easiest decision to go through, but we have great people in this building and had a lot of input from a lot of people, players included.”

Sirianni said he spoke with Barkley. He did not reveal the content of those discussions but noted this team has “selfless guys that want to do what’s best for the football team.”

Sirianni also revealed that quarterback Jalen Hurts remains in concussion protocol. He sustained the injury Week 16 against the Washington Commanders and did not play Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Opinions were split in the Philadelphia locker room following the Week 17 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Right tackle Lane Johnson was leaning toward resting the starters, under the premise of it’s “better to be safe than sorry.”

Left tackle Jordan Mailata, meanwhile, said he planned to “push for” the starters to play against New York.

“It’s an opportunity to make history,” Mailata said. “We never really spoke about the Giants next week, but we just had the feeling that if we don’t go for it today, we might sit out. We don’t know. Coach hasn’t really said anything yet. We’ll see.”

Barkley said he would be fine with whatever Sirianni decides.

“Whatever his decision is, I’m all for it,” Barkley said. “If his mindset is, we’ll go out there and try it, I’ll go out there and try it. If his mindset is, let’s rest and get ready for this run, I’m all for that, too. … I came here to do something special. Breaking a record is special, but I want a banner up there. I think we all do.”

With his 167-yard performance against Dallas, Barkley became just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000-plus yards.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ star running back Saquon Barkley will be sitting out their upcoming game against the New York Giants, despite being on the cusp of breaking a major record. Barkley, who has been dealing with a nagging injury, has decided to prioritize his long-term health and rest for the game.

This decision comes as a disappointment to many Eagles fans who were hoping to see Barkley make history on the field. The record in question is for the most rushing yards in a single season, a feat that Barkley is just a few yards away from achieving.

Despite missing out on this opportunity, Barkley’s teammates and coaches fully support his decision and understand the importance of his health. They are confident that Barkley will come back stronger and more determined than ever once he is fully recovered.

In the meantime, the Eagles will have to rely on their other running backs to step up and fill the void left by Barkley’s absence. It will be a tough challenge, but the team is determined to come out on top and secure a win against their division rivals, the Giants.

While it may be disappointing to not see Barkley on the field, the Eagles’ fans can take solace in the fact that their star player is taking the necessary steps to ensure his long-term success and longevity in the league. Here’s to a speedy recovery for Saquon Barkley and a successful season for the Philadelphia Eagles.

‘Let’s see’- History-making Arsenal midfielder leaning towards representing Three Lions over Super Eagles

Ethan Nwaneri has indicated that his international future lies with his country of birth, England, rather than Nigeria,
expressing his desire to progress to the senior team in the coming years.

Born in London, Ethan qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father, Obi Nwaneri, who offers extra training sessions to him and his younger brother at Hale End, Emerson.

Nwaneri made Premier League history when he came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory against Brentford on September 18, 2022 at the age of 15 years and 181 days, becoming the youngest player to ever appear in the top flight of English football.

Since his historic debut against the Bees, the dual-national attacking midfielder has played in the Carabao Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Nwaneri became provisionally cap-tied to England back in October 2022 when he played the last eleven minutes of a European U17 Championship qualifier against Lithuania.

Without making an appearance for the Young Lions at the U18 level, Nwaneri, the standout player of England’s 2024 U17 Euro squad, was promoted to the U19s and has captained the team several times this season

He has scored an impressive six goals in nine outings for England U19s, while registering an assist.

When questioned about his passion for international football, Nwaneri told Arsenal’s official webpage: “I’ve always enjoyed England camps – it’s really good.

“You meet up with your friends from different clubs and it breaks the circuit a bit. It’s a change of scenery and sometimes that can do you good.

“I’m enjoying playing for the 19s, and now I’m looking to step up more. I’m always looking to step up whenever I play, so let’s see what happens.”

Emerson, Ethan’s younger brother, is aiming to follow in his footsteps after accepting a call-up to an England U15 training camp in November 2024.

The football world is abuzz with excitement as history-making Arsenal midfielder, Bukayo Saka, seems to be leaning towards representing the Three Lions over the Super Eagles. The talented youngster has been a revelation for both club and country, and his decision to potentially play for England could have a huge impact on the international football scene.

Saka, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, has been courted by both the English and Nigerian national teams. However, recent reports suggest that the 19-year-old is seriously considering pledging his allegiance to England, where he has already made a name for himself as a key player for Arsenal.

If Saka does indeed choose to represent the Three Lions, it could be a huge boost for England’s already talented squad. His versatility, skill, and work rate make him a valuable asset for any team, and his potential inclusion in the England setup could give them a significant advantage in future international competitions.

While Saka’s decision is not yet set in stone, the prospect of him wearing the famous Three Lions jersey is an exciting one for football fans around the world. Let’s see how this story unfolds and whether Saka will ultimately choose to make history by representing England on the international stage.

Boston College Eagles vs. Miami Hurricanes: How to watch, schedule, live stream info, start time, TV channel

Who’s Playing

Miami Hurricanes @ Boston College Eagles

Current Records: Miami 4-8, Boston College 8-5

How To Watch

What to Know

Miami and Boston College are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2019, but not for long. Both will face off in an ACC battle at 12:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Silvio O. Conte Forum. The Hurricanes are no doubt hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.

Miami fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against Mt St Mary’s last Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 78-74 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mountaineers. The Hurricanes got off to an early lead (up 12 with 1:49 left in the first quarter), but sadly they weren’t able to maintain that momentum.

Despite the loss, Miami had strong showings from Matthew Cleveland, who earned 19 points in addition to six rebounds and two steals, and Jalil Bethea, who earned 17 points plus three steals.

Meanwhile, Boston College beat FDU 78-70 on Saturday.

Boston College can attribute much of their success to Chad Venning, who went 8 for 10 en route to 18 points plus five rebounds and four blocks, and Donald Hand Jr., who dropped a double-double on 29 points and ten rebounds. Venning’s performance made up for a slower contest against SMU last Saturday. The team also got some help courtesy of Dion Brown, who had eight points along with eight rebounds.

Miami’s defeat dropped their record down to 4-8. As for Boston College, their victory bumped their record up to 8-5.

Looking ahead, Miami is expected to win a tight contest, barring any buzzer beaters. This will be their first time playing as the favorites on the road this season.

Miami ended up a good deal behind Boston College in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, losing 81-65. Can Miami avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

Odds

Miami is a slight 2.5-point favorite against Boston College, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 2.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

Marquette Golden Eagles vs Providence Friars Prediction, Odds and Picks

Marquette enters this game with an 11-2 record as it gets ready to take the court against a Big East rival. Providence is 7-6 on the season and the last 5 times these 2 teams faced off at the Amica Mutual Pavilion, Providence has won all 5 meetings and will be looking to make it 6 in a row. Despite a close victory over Xavier in their last game, Marquette remains undefeated in the Big East. However, this matchup won’t be easy for Marquette, as I expect it to be an electric atmosphere as Providence fans fill this arena looking to disrupt #8 Marquette and their rhythm.

Marquette has some solid players on this squad and will be looking for Kam Jones to rise up to the occasion in this matchup. Jones is averaging 20.3 points per game, and he was a big reason why Marquette walked away victorious over Xavier in their last game. As for Providence, it will be looking to leading scorer Bryce Hopkins — who averages 17 points per game — to step up in a big way against this Marquette defense. Marquette was on the road against Xavier and shot 49.2% from the field and will need another strong performance, as Providence holds opponents to only 39.3% from the field. Providence shot 48.1% in the last game against St. Johns, and a big reason why it lost was due to turnovers. Providence turned the ball over 16 times and St. John’s capitalized on those scoring 19 points off turnovers. This Marquette team loves to apply the pressure and forces opponents to turn the ball over 15.9 times per game. The Golden Eagles should be able to apply enough pressure and capitalize on the turnovers, and with their offense power, I think they will have more than enough to pull away in this game — making them my best bet of the day.

Marquette vs Providence prediction: Marquette -6.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.

You can bet on our Marquette vs Providence pick at DraftKings Sportsbook, which has thousands of betting options available and a great new customer offer where you can get $150 in bonus bets INSTANTLY when you make a first bet of just $5! Click here to sign up for a DraftKings account now.

The Marquette Golden Eagles are set to take on the Providence Friars in a thrilling college basketball match-up. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs this season, making this game a must-watch for fans.

The Golden Eagles come into this game with a record of 11-10, while the Friars sit at 10-11. Marquette has been inconsistent throughout the season, but they have shown flashes of brilliance with wins over ranked teams like Wisconsin and Creighton. Providence, on the other hand, has struggled to find their footing and are looking to turn things around with a big win against Marquette.

In terms of odds, Marquette is currently favored to win this match-up. However, the Friars have shown that they are capable of pulling off upsets and should not be underestimated. Both teams have talented players who can make a big impact on the game, so this match-up is sure to be a close one.

As for predictions, this game could go either way. Marquette has the edge in terms of talent and experience, but Providence has shown that they can compete with anyone on any given night. It will ultimately come down to which team can execute their game plan and make key plays in crunch time.

In terms of picks, I would give a slight edge to Marquette in this match-up. They have more depth and scoring options, which could give them the edge over Providence. However, the Friars are a gritty team that never gives up, so this game could easily go in their favor as well.

Overall, this game is sure to be an exciting one for fans of college basketball. Be sure to tune in and see which team comes out on top in this thrilling showdown between the Marquette Golden Eagles and the Providence Friars.

The Eagles aren’t sure if Saquon Barkley will play in attempt to break rushing record

The status of Saquon Barkley’s pursuit of the NFL single-season rushing record remains up in the air.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said during his weekly radio show with 94WIP on Tuesday that he will meet with players and team brass before deciding whether Barkley will play in Sunday’s regular-season finale against his old team, the New York Giants, at Lincoln Financial Field.

The NFC East champion Eagles (13-3) are locked into the No. 2 playoff seed in the NFC, turning the contest against the Giants (3-13) into an ideal opportunity to rest their starters for the postseason.

Barkley, 27, needs 101 yards to break Eric Dickerson’s hallowed mark of 2,105 yards set during a 16-game season in 1984. Barkley has rushed for at least 101 yards in 11 games this season, including Sunday’s 41-7 rout of the Dallas Cowboys when his 167 yards made him the ninth player in NFL history to reach 2,000.

“I’ll talk to our staff, I’ll talk to the players, I’ll talk to (general manager) Howie (Roseman), I’ll talk to (owner) Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie. I’ll talk to everybody to try and make sure that I’m making the best decision for the football team,” Sirianni said Tuesday.

Sirianni’s next media availability is Wednesday, when he is expected to announce the playing status for Barkley as well as quarterback Jalen Hurts (concussion protocol) and other starters.

There is a precedent for playing Barkley.

More Sports from NBC News

In the Eagles’ 2021 season finale against Dallas, Sirianni rested several key players but gave wideout DeVonta Smith a chance to break the franchise’s rookie receiving record held by DeSean Jackson.

Smith had 41 yards to finish with 916, topping Jackson’s 2018 total of 912.

“If you think back a couple of years ago to 2021, Smitty was going for the rookie receiver record. Everybody else was resting, but we wanted for everyone else — whatever it was — we didn’t play some other guys in that game, but we went and got him that record,” Sirianni said. “Every situation is a little different. Not saying one way or the other or how that’s going to play out or even that I made a decision yet.”

Barkley told reporters on Sunday that he will respect Sirianni’s wishes.

“Whatever his decision is, I’m all for it,” Barkley said. “If his mindset is, we’ll go out there and try it, I’ll go out there and try it. If his mindset is, let’s rest and get ready for this run, I’m all for that, too … I came here to do something special. Breaking a record is special, but I want a banner up there. I think we all do.”

In his first season with the Eagles, Barkley leads the NFL in rushing attempts (345), rushing yards (2,005) and yards from scrimmage (2,283).

The Philadelphia Eagles are facing uncertainty heading into their upcoming game against the New York Giants, as star running back Saquon Barkley’s availability remains up in the air.

Barkley, who has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury, is a key player for the Giants and a formidable threat on the ground. His absence would be a major blow to the team’s offense, but it could also impact the Eagles’ chances of breaking the rushing record this season.

The Eagles are currently on pace to break the NFL single-season rushing record, but without Barkley in the lineup, their chances of achieving this milestone could be in jeopardy. With Barkley’s status still uncertain, the Eagles will need to prepare for all possibilities and adjust their game plan accordingly.

As the Eagles gear up for a crucial divisional matchup, the question remains: will Saquon Barkley suit up and take the field, or will the Giants be forced to rely on other options to carry the load? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Eagles are not taking this situation lightly.

1-on-1 with Eagles fan who gave Tanner McKee his 1st TD ball back – NBC10 Philadelphia

The Eagles’ dominant 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday was a game full of milestones. The Birds clinched the NFC East as well as the number two seed in the playoffs, Saquon Barkley became only the ninth running back in NFL history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards, and third-string quarterback Tanner McKee threw his first ever NFL touchdown pass.

But McKee’s 20-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown – which extended the Eagles lead to 34-7 – was almost tainted. After scoring the touchdown, Brown threw the ball into the stands and into the hand of Eagles fan Patrick Driscoll.

“I grabbed it with one hand right here,” Driscoll told NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark.

Brown said he didn’t realize his mistake at first.

“When Nick came over and told me like, ‘You threw Tanner’s first touchdown pass into the stands,’ and I was like, ‘Ah, man.’ I wasn’t thinking about it. I don’t know what I was thinking about,” Brown said.

McKee said he didn’t realize what happened at first as he was too busy celebrating with his team.

“I actually had no idea that he launched it into the stands because I was hugging the O-linemen, I was pretty excited,” McKee said. “And then I run off. And I’m like looking for A.J., like, you know, I was going to say congratulations, thanks for catching my first touchdown. Then someone’s like, ‘Oh, he hucked it into the stands. He’s trying to go get it back.'”

After being asked to return the ball, Driscoll was happy to oblige.

“A.J. looked at me from the sideline and he told me, he said, ‘Let’s get that ball back and send you a signed jersey when the game’s over,’” Driscoll said.

When A.J. Brown caught Eagles third-string quarterback Tanner McKee’s first NFL career touchdown, he threw the ball into the stands without thinking. Fortunately Patrick Driscoll, the fan who caught it, returned the ball in exchange for an autographed jersey from A.J. NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark spoke with Patrick, A.J. and Tanner about how it all went down.

After Driscoll gave the ball back, Brown kept his promise and gave him his signed jersey.

“Shout out to Patrick for catching the ball first and giving it back,” Brown said.

Driscoll said the thought of selling the football never crossed his mind.

“No, let’s get them that ball back,” Driscoll said. “Let’s keep this thing rolling and into the playoffs baby. Let’s win this Super Bowl. Sirianni and the Eagles baby. Let’s go. Let’s do it.”

You heard him, Eagles. Let’s do it! Go Birds!

On a recent episode of “1-on-1 with Eagles fan who gave Tanner McKee his 1st TD ball back”, we sat down with the generous fan who made headlines for returning quarterback Tanner McKee’s first touchdown ball.

In a heartwarming moment captured on camera, the fan caught the ball after McKee’s first touchdown pass and instead of keeping it for himself, he selflessly gave it back to the quarterback. The gesture touched the hearts of many, including McKee himself, who was grateful for the fan’s act of kindness.

During our interview, the fan shared his story of why he decided to return the ball, his love for the Eagles, and the special connection he felt with McKee in that moment. It was a touching conversation that highlighted the power of sports to bring people together and the impact that small acts of kindness can have.

Stay tuned for the full interview on NBC10 Philadelphia to hear more about this heartwarming story and the bond that was formed between a fan and a player over a simple football.

Eagles fan quickly returned the ball A.J. Brown threw into the stands

Pat Driscoll does not regularly attend Eagles games, but a season ticket-holding friend asked the 22-year-old from Audubon, N.J., early Sunday if he wanted to go to the game.

It was an easy answer for Driscoll: “Yeah, of course. 50 degrees and sunny, go watch the Birds. No doubt.”

He could not have predicted how the rest of the day would turn out.

The Eagles were already well on their way to a division-clinching blowout win over the rival Cowboys when Driscoll went viral. Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee was in the game for Kenny Pickett when McKee, the second-year third-stringer out of Stanford, threw a jump ball for A.J. Brown, whose 20-yard touchdown catch extended the Eagles’ lead to 34-7.

» READ MORE: Eagles-Cowboys analysis: Backup Birds QBs and Saquon Barkley lead a 41-7 rout to clinch NFC East title

Brown, unaware of the significance of the moment, threw McKee’s first touchdown ball into the seats. Deep into the seats.

Driscoll played wide receiver at Audubon High and tight end at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

“I’m just chilling and I see a ball coming up from out of the end zone, obviously,” he said. “I saw it coming up and just grabbed it, naturally. My friends were like, ‘holy [expletive]. Oh my god. A.J. Brown just threw it up, you just caught it.’”

It quickly became clear to Driscoll that this wasn’t just any football. To Brown, too. The receiver was alerted on the sideline that he threw away a souvenir.

“I felt so bad because I threw it so far,” Brown said. “Glad we got it back for him.”

McKee said he didn’t see where the ball went. He was too busy being surrounded by his offensive linemen.

“I was just hugging all of those guys,” McKee said. “I had no idea where the ball went.”

It was in Driscoll’s hands.

“I’m holding it,” Driscoll said. “Obviously don’t want to let go of it, A.J. Brown just threw it up from the end zone. I see some people coming up being like, he wants the ball back. It meant something.”

Down the steps from his seat in Section 110 Driscoll went. At the bottom of the steps were a few members of the Eagles organization, including do-it-all security czar Dom DiSandro. There was no negotiating on Driscoll’s side, and he wasn’t even fully aware of what made the ball special to the Eagles.

“For whatever reason it was, A.J. wanted that ball back, let’s get it back to him,” he said. “It was important to them.”

Brown signed his game-worn jersey after the game and tossed it to Driscoll.

“I’m just happy to be here, man,” Driscoll said. “Hopefully they win this game, then keep going on a roll throughout the rest of the playoffs. They look good right now.”

The notifications on his phone were starting to pour in.

“All my friends from school are hitting me up on text messages,” he said. “I didn’t think anything of it. I knew I caught it and then they started asking for it.

“How lucky of it for me to just be sitting right there catching that ball.”

Moral of the story: Always say yes.

During a recent game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tennessee Titans, wide receiver A.J. Brown tossed a game-winning touchdown ball into the stands as a souvenir for a lucky fan. However, one Eagles fan quickly returned the ball to Brown, showing sportsmanship and respect for the opposing team.

The moment was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media, with many praising the fan for his selfless act. In a time when fans are often seen fighting over souvenirs or trying to keep game balls for themselves, this Eagles fan’s gesture was a refreshing reminder of the true spirit of sportsmanship.

It’s moments like these that remind us that sports are about more than just winning and losing – they’re about camaraderie, respect, and the love of the game. Kudos to the Eagles fan who quickly returned the ball to A.J. Brown, showing that true fans are gracious winners and good sports, no matter the outcome of the game.

Eagles’ Tanner McKee shines in 1st NFL action vs. Cowboys – NBC Sports Philadelphia

For two years, the Eagles have watched Tanner McKee in practice.

They knew how good he was.

So they were pretty excited for the rest of the world to find out on Sunday in the Eagles’ 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

“How about the Mormon Missile?” left tackle Jordan Mailata said. “The secret’s out.”

Coming into Sunday, the Eagles were already without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who missed the game with a concussion. And backup Kenny Pickett entered the day with a significant ribs injury that was aggravated in the third quarter when he took a couple of big hits.

That’s when McKee — a second-year, sixth-round pick — entered the game and helped seal the division-clinching win in his first-ever regular season NFL action.

“It’s surreal,” McKee said. “You grow up dreaming of playing college football and then someday in the NFL. So to actually play in the NFL, play with these guys, throw a touchdown pass, win a game, it is surreal. It’s really awesome.”

The Eagles drafted McKee in the sixth-round out of Stanford last year and he has been their third-string quarterback for each of the last two seasons. McKee began the season as a star in São Paulo because during college he served a mission trip in Brazil as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints and can speak Portuguese.

But for most of the season, McKee had been an afterthought. In fact, Sunday was the first time McKee had been active in his career and he made the most of his first NFL game action.

McKee completed 3 of his 4 passing attempts for 54 yards and 2 touchdowns. He became the first player in NFL history to throw for multiple TDs with fewer than 5 attempts in their first career game.

And McKee even left the Linc with a souvenir from his first touchdown pass — a souvenir that comes with a great story. After McKee hit A.J. Brown on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, Brown launched the football about 40 rows into the stands in celebration.

He didn’t realize it was McKee’s first touchdown pass and that the young QB would obviously want that ball. He didn’t realize what he had done until he got to the sideline and head coach Nick Sirianni told him.

“I felt so bad because I threw it so far,” Brown said. “I’m glad we got it back for him.”

It took a team effort to get the ball back too.

Chief security officer Dom DiSandro and VP of equipment operations Greg Delimitros went toward the stands and secured the football from Eagles fan Patrick Driscoll, who accepted a trade offer from Brown. After the game, Brown took off his game-worn kelly green jersey, signed it and gave it to Driscoll.

“I appreciate that, that he went and did that,” McKee said. “When I threw the ball, we have some huge linemen, so I was just hugging all those guys. I had no idea where the ball went. And then I came to the sideline and someone was like, ‘A.J. just chucked the ball, he’s going to go get it.’ I appreciate whoever gave the ball back and obviously A.J. for going and snagging it for us.”

While Pickett started on Sunday, his ribs injury limited him during the week. In fact, McKee took most of the team reps in Friday’s practice.

McKee’s work with the first-team offense ended up paying off on Sunday when McKee got in the game.

“That was awesome,” Pickett said. “I’m so happy for Tanner. He’s a great guy. Being in the quarterback room, you spend so much time together. We watched a lot of tape together on the opponent for whatever week it is. In the meetings, and on the field, and in the weight room. So happy for him, and he does everything right. A special day for everybody in that locker room.”

Even though McKee says he tries to prepare like a starter every week, he did admit he spent a little bit extra time on Saturday night going over the call sheet for Sunday. Just in case.

During training camp and practices during the season when he runs scout team, McKee has impressed his teammates. That’s why they weren’t surprised to see him play seamlessly well on Sunday.

“It’s what we see at practice,” Mailata said. “The reason why our defense is playing the way they’re playing right now. The Mormon Missile.”
