2024 NFL playoff picture, standings: Eagles clinch NFC East, No. 2 seed; Buccaneers back in NFC South lead

The AFC playoff picture is coming into focus with one spot still remaining. The Los Angeles Chargers wrapped up their playoff berth with a victory over the New England Patriots on Saturday, but the final playoff spot will be up for grabs heading into the season’s final week.

The Cincinnati Bengals remained alive in the playoff race with their thrilling overtime win over the Denver Broncos, but the Indianapolis Colts were eliminated with their loss to the New York Giants. The Miami Dolphins remain alive in the playoff race as well. Denver can still clinch a playoff berth with a victory over the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs in Week 18.

In the NFC, the Los Angeles Rams moved one step closer toward clinching the NFC West. They could clinch the division as soon as Sunday under this scenario, or just defeat the Seattle Seahawks in Week 18. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers put pressure on the Atlanta Falcons for the NFC South title with a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons face the Washington Commanders on Sunday night.

Below is a breakdown of the conference standings with the Week 17 slate winding down:

AFC playoff picture

z — clinched first-round bye
y — clinched division
x — clinched playoff berth
e — eliminated from playoffs

1. Kansas City Chiefs (15-1)

The Chiefs wrapped up the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage with their win over the Steelers. Kansas City gets the lone bye in the conference and can rest its starters in Week 18.

Remaining schedule: at Broncos

2. Buffalo Bills (13-3)

The Bills needed the Chiefs to lose out to still have a shot at the No. 1 seed. That didn’t happen, so the Bills went out and wrapped up the No. 2 seed with their blowout win over the Jets. They will face the No. 7 seed in the wild-card round.

Remaining schedule: at Patriots

3. Baltimore Ravens (11-5)

The Ravens have taken over the AFC North lead with their win and the Steelers’ loss, having a one-game lead over Pittsburgh heading into the final week. A win or a Steelers loss in Week 18 gives Baltimore the division.

Remaining schedule: vs. Browns

4. Houston Texans (9-7)

The Texans have already clinched the AFC South. They will be the No. 4 seed in the AFC and will have a home game in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Remaining schedule: at Titans

5. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6)

The Steelers lose the AFC North lead after falling to the Chiefs. They need a win and a Ravens loss in the final week to win the division. They hold the tiebreaker over the Chargers for the No. 5 seed due beating Los Angeles in Week 3.

Remaining schedule: vs. Bengals

6. Los Angeles Chargers (10-6)

The Chargers clinched a playoff berth with their win over the Patriots.

Remaining schedule: at Raiders

7. Denver Broncos (9-7)

The Broncos are a win away from clinching a playoff spot, even with their overtime loss to the Bengals. They need to win in Week 18 to clinch a playoff spot.

Remaining schedule: vs. Chiefs

8. Cincinnati Bengals (8-8)

The Bengals remain alive in the AFC playoff race, thanks to their overtime win over the Broncos. They will make the playoffs if they win in Week 18 and the Broncos lose along with Miami losing one of its final two games.

Remaining schedule: at Steelers

9. Miami Dolphins (7-8)

The Dolphins’ AFC playoff hopes are still alive, but Miami will be eliminated with a loss in one of its final two games.

Remaining schedule: at Browns, at Jets

Eliminated from playoff contention

Seven teams are eliminated from the playoff race in the AFC: Raiders, Patriots, Titans, Jets, Jaguars, Browns and Colts.

NFC playoff picture

y — clinched division
x — clinched playoff berth
e — eliminated from playoffs

1. Detroit Lions (13-2)

The Lions remain the No. 1 seed in the conference. They are also tied for the NFC North lead with the Vikings, but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Detroit will clinch the No. 1 seed with a win and a Minnesota loss.

Remaining schedule: at 49ers, vs. Vikings

2. Philadelphia Eagles (13-3)

Philadelphia clinched the NFC East and the No. 2 seed with its win over the Cowboys. The Eagles remain in the hunt for home-field advantage, but need the Lions to lose out and the Vikings to lose vs. the Packers in Week 17.

Remaining schedule: vs. Giants

3. Los Angeles Rams (10-6)

The Rams maintain their NFC West lead by a game over the Seahawks with their win over the Cardinals. Los Angeles clinches the division next week with a win, or in Week 17 if two of these five teams (Browns, Vikings, Commanders, 49ers) win due to strength of schedule.

Remaining schedule: vs. Seahawks

4. Atlanta Falcons (8-7)

The Falcons temporarily drop out of the lead in the NFC South. Atlanta holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Tampa Bay and control its own destiny in the division.

Remaining schedule: at Commanders, vs. Panthers

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)

The Buccaneers take over the NFC South lead for the time being after beating the Panthers. They need to finish with a better record than the Falcons to win the division since they lost both games to Atlanta.

Remaining schedule: vs. Saints

5. Minnesota Vikings (13-2)

Minnesota remains the top wild-card team in the conference and is tied with Detroit for first place in the NFC North. Detroit still has the division lead via the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Remaining schedule: vs. Packers, at Lions

6. Green Bay Packers (11-4)

The Packers clinched a playoff berth and are currently the No. 6 seed in the NFC.

Remaining schedule: at Vikings, vs. Bears

7. Washington Commanders (10-5)

The Commanders can wrap up a wild-card berth win a victory over the Falcons on Sunday night.

Remaining schedule: vs. Falcons, at Cowboys

8. Seattle Seahawks (9-7)

The Seahawks are a game back for the NFC West lead, but are on life support. They could be eliminated in Week 17 due to this intriguing playoff scenario but even if they beat the Rams in Week 18, they need a miracle to get in.

Remaining schedule: at Rams

9. Atlanta Falcons (8-7)

The Falcons temporarily drop out of the lead in the NFC South. Atlanta holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Tampa Bay and controls its own destiny in the division.

Remaining schedule: at Commanders, vs. Panthers

Eliminated from playoff contention

The Cardinals, Cowboys, 49ers, Saints, Bears, Panthers and Giants have been eliminated from the playoffs.

As we head into the final stretch of the 2024 NFL season, the playoff picture is starting to take shape. The Philadelphia Eagles have clinched the NFC East and secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC, setting themselves up for a strong playoff run. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reclaimed the top spot in the NFC South, showing that they are a force to be reckoned with as they gear up for the postseason.

In the NFC, the Eagles have been dominant all season long, led by their dynamic offense and stout defense. With a record of 11-3, they have secured their division and are looking like serious contenders for a deep playoff run. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has been playing at an MVP level, and the defense has been locking down opponents left and right. The Eagles are definitely a team to watch as we head into the playoffs.

As for the Buccaneers, they have bounced back from a mid-season slump to reclaim the top spot in the NFC South. Led by future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, the Buccaneers have shown that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the NFC. With a record of 10-4, they are poised to make a run at the Super Bowl once again.

With the playoffs just around the corner, the race for seeding and home-field advantage is heating up. Teams like the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, and Dallas Cowboys are all in the mix for the top spots in the NFC, while the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Tennessee Titans are battling it out in the AFC.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting finish to the 2024 NFL season, and fans can expect plenty of drama and excitement in the weeks to come. Stay tuned as we see which teams will punch their tickets to the playoffs and make a run at Super Bowl glory.

Eagles clinch NFC East with win over Cowboys

It required three more weeks of work to capture the division after punching their fourth consecutive playoff ticket, but the Eagles nonetheless enter the final game of the regular season flying high as the NFC’s No. 2 seed with wins in 11 of their last 12.

Their only loss during that span came in a nail-biter last week with quarterback Jalen Hurts, who also missed Sunday’s contest, sidelined by a concussion. An otherwise sterling run helped turn a 2-2 record at the early Week 5 bye into a 13-3 mark and division title, powered by a dominant run game behind Saquon Barkley and a suffocating defense under coordinator Vic Fangio that has helped wipe away the bitter memory of last season’s 1-6 stretch run.

Despite a tremendous season, though, Philly has only a narrow path to the conference’s top seed — one that requires the Minnesota Vikings to lose Sunday, the Detroit Lions to finish out 0-2 and the Eagles to take care of business against the Giants in Week 18.

Sirianni acknowledged the odds and how they could play into resting starters or not next Sunday.

“We’ll watch some games tonight and see how things are going and then we’ll do what we need to do,” he said. “Always got to do what’s right for the football team to reach our goals of what we need to do. Got a lot to think about. We’ll enjoy this, and then I’ll think about it tonight.”

If all of those results don’t fall their way, the Eagles will be hosting the eventual No. 7 seed on Super Wild Card Weekend.

In a thrilling showdown, the Philadelphia Eagles secured their spot as NFC East champions with a decisive victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles came out strong, dominating the game from start to finish and leaving no doubt that they were the superior team on the field.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts led the charge, showcasing his skills both through the air and on the ground. The Eagles defense also stepped up, shutting down the Cowboys’ offense and preventing them from making any significant plays.

With this win, the Eagles have punched their ticket to the playoffs and will be looking to make a deep run in the postseason. Fans are ecstatic as they celebrate their team’s division title and look forward to what promises to be an exciting playoff run for the Eagles. Fly Eagles Fly! #NFCeastchamps #PhiladelphiaEagles

Eagles great Eric Allen named a Hall of Fame finalist for 2nd time – NBC Sports Philadelphia

For the second year in a row, record-setting Eagles cornerback Eric Allen has been named one of 15 finalists for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

This is Allen’s 19th year of eligibility. Players have 20 years once they become eligible for consideration five years after they retire and then they move on to the Seniors Committee.

Allen has been one of the more egregious Hall of Fame snubs of his generation. He’s the only cornerback in NFL history with at least 54 regular-season interceptions and eight TD returns not in the Hall of Fame, and he wasn’t even a finalist until last year in his 18th year of eligibility.

The Hall of Fame selection committee began the selection process with a list of 167 nominees, then reduced that throughout the fall to 50 and then 25 semifinalists before determining the final list of 15 finalists.

The selection committee will meet in New Orleans Super Bowl week to pick from four to eight Hall of Famers from that list of 15, and the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 will be announced Feb. 6, the Thursday before Super Bowl LIX. The enshrinement will be in August in Canton, Ohio.

Allen, the Eagles’ 2nd-round pick in 1988 out of Arizona State, had 58 interceptions and nine touchdown returns including the postseason in a brilliant 14-year career. He had more interceptions than 22 of 37 defensive backs already in the Hall of Fame.

Allen made a splash as a rookie with five interceptions for the 1988 NFC East champs and then added eight in 1989, 2nd-most in the NFL behind Browns safety Felix Wright. He was named to the first of his six Pro Bowl teams and 1st-team All-Pro.

In the Eagles’ 1992 wild-card game in New Orleans – their first postseason win in 12 years – Allen capped a wild 26-0 fourth quarter with an 18-yard pick-6 off Bobby Hebert. That was the first INT return for a touchdown in Eagles postseason history.

In 1993, Allen had six interceptions and returned four of them for touchdowns, at the time an NFL single-season record (since broken by DaRon Bland of the Cowboys).

He left Philadelphia after the 1994 season as the final star from the Buddy Ryan Era to bolt via free agency during the great migration under former owner Norman Braman. He finished his career with three seasons with the Saints and four with the Raiders.

Allen shares the Eagles franchise interception record of 34 with Bill Bradley and Dawkins. His five INT touchdown returns with the Eagles are a club record, one more than Malcolm Jenkins.

Another long-time Eagle — linebacker Maxie Baughan — is a seniors committee finalist and is also a finalist this year. Baughan, the Eagles’ 2nd-round pick in 1960, spent the 1960 through 1965 seasons with the Eagles and made his first five of nine 1st-team All-Pro selections as an Eagle.

The Eagles have selected 10 Hall of Famers in the conventional NFL draft and two others — Reggie White and Cris Carter — in the supplemental draft.

Players they’ve drafted who’ve gone on to become Hall of Famers are George McAfee in the first round in 1940, Steve Van Buren in the first round in 1944, Pete Pihos in the fifth round in 1945, Lou Creekmur in the 26th round in 1948, Chuck Bednarik in the first round in 1949, Tommy McDonald in the third round and Sonny Jurgensen in the fourth round in 1957, Bob Brown in the first round in 1964, Carmichael in the seventh round in 1971 and Brian Dawkins in the second round in 1996. McAfee and Creekmur never played for the Eagles.

Jason Peters will be eligible for Hall of Fame consideration in 2028 — assuming he doesn’t play again — and Jason Kelce will be eligible in 2029.

The Philadelphia Eagles legend, Eric Allen, has been named a Hall of Fame finalist for the second time in his career. Allen, who played as a cornerback for the Eagles from 1988 to 1994, was known for his exceptional playmaking ability and shutdown coverage on the field.

During his time with the Eagles, Allen recorded 34 interceptions, including a franchise-record 5 interceptions returned for touchdowns. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a four-time All-Pro selection during his career.

After retiring from the NFL, Allen has continued to be involved in the football community, working as an analyst and commentator for various sports networks. His impact on the game and the Eagles organization has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his nomination as a Hall of Fame finalist for the second time.

Fans and teammates alike have been vocal in their support of Allen’s Hall of Fame candidacy, citing his impressive statistics and impact on the game. As the final decision draws near, the Eagles community eagerly awaits the announcement of whether Allen will finally receive the recognition he deserves as a Hall of Famer.

Cowboys QB Trey Lance update, game status Week 17 vs Eagles

The Dallas Cowboys 2024 season is mercifully coming to an end. There are now just eight days and two games remaining on the schedule, with the club being eliminated from the playoffs last week before they took to the field. The coaching staff, led by Mike McCarthy, deserves kudos for keeping the team engaged despite this fate being pretty much inevitable since early November.

Dallas started out with a 3-7 record, but they fought for four wins in their last five games with the only defeat being a fluke, bone-headed late game screwup on a special teams play. With the club not being mathematically eliminated until Week 16, they approached their roster from the perspective of winning being the most important thing.

Even though they were eliminated before they took the field against Tampa Bay last week, their week of preparation was done with the possibility they could still pull off a miracle. That hope is gone now, and it may impact whether or not fans get a regular-season glimpse of backup QB Trey Lance.

Dallas sent a fourth-round pick to San Francisco in exchange for Lance, who was the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 for the 49ers. He wa unable to unseat Cooper Rush for the role of Dak Prescott’s backup and now is just eight days away from the end of his contract.

The Cowboys have never tried to utilize his skillset as a running threat, not even in the vein of how the New Orleans Saints have deployed Taysom Hill over the years.

The offseason was a maddening experience for the fanbase, as the club failed to not only avoid signing any impact free agents from the outside, but also failed to bring back many of their own. With contract extensions looming over their biggest stars in Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, the coaching staff were all on lame duck status.

All in all, it forced several fans to be lose interest in the brand. One thing that united fans, though, especially under the looming 2025 of Prescott (at the time) was whether or not Lance had what it took to be the next franchise quarterback. Acquired towards the end of the 2023 offseason, Lance didn’t play that year, so no one really knew what to expect from him.

As head coach Mike McCarthy avoids playing his stars in the preseason, Lance got plenty of snaps in the exhibitions and acquitted himself relatively well until the final performance when he bombed. He really hasn’t been seen since, which in a lost season where Prescott has been out with injury has frustrated fans even more.

Nothing crystalized this animosity more than in Week 11, when in a blowout loss to the Houston Texans where Cooper Rush struggled mightily, McCarthy refused to let Lance get snaps.

Now eliminated, the subject returns.

Lance is a free agent, as is current starter Cooper Rush, in 2025. Rush’s ceiling is obvious; the offense is ridiculously dumbed down due to his arm talent limitations and lack of athleticism. Lance offers upside in that regard, with nowhere near the polish or experience Rush brings to the table. But with nothing to play for but intel, there’s no reason not to give Lance snaps that count.

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their Week 17 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, all eyes are on quarterback Trey Lance and his status for the game. Lance, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury, has been limited in practice this week as he works to get back to full strength.

Despite the injury, Lance has remained optimistic about his chances of playing in the crucial divisional showdown. The coaching staff has been monitoring his progress closely and will make a game-time decision on his availability.

If Lance is unable to go, backup quarterback Cooper Rush will likely get the start in his place. Rush has shown flashes of potential in limited action this season and will be ready to step in if called upon.

Regardless of who is under center for the Cowboys, they will need to be firing on all cylinders to secure a win against the Eagles and clinch a playoff spot. Stay tuned for more updates on Trey Lance’s status as game day approaches.

Legendary Eagles LB Bill Bergey dies at 79 after cancer battle

PHILADELPHIA — Bill Bergey, a five-time Pro Bowl linebacker who played in a Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles, died Wednesday, the team announced. He was 79.

His son, Jake, posted on social media that Bergey died of cancer. Bergey, a three-time Eagles team MVP in a vote of his teammates, had been open about his fight with the disease over the past few years.

Bergey, who was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2009, said he had a form of jaw cancer since 2021.

“I didn’t give it the old, ‘Why me?’ or anything like that,” he said in 2003. “I just thought that I had to fight it just like I would fight anything else that I needed to fight.”

Bergey was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969 and made one Pro Bowl appearance for them before he was traded ahead of the 1974 season. Bergey’s career took off in Philadelphia and he became one of the more popular Eagles players in his era. He made the Pro Bowl in 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1978 and was named an All-Pro for the 1974 and 1975 seasons.

“I’ve always had a love affair with the fans of Philadelphia,” Bergey said in 2023. “I have always been kind and courteous to them all the way up that ladder of success that I had because, you won’t believe it, but I’ve met the same people coming back down off that ladder.”

Teamwner Jeffrey Lurie said Bergey “gained the respect of players and coaches across the league for his blue-collar work ethic and hard-nosed play.”

“Bill exemplified what it meant to be an Eagle in every way, and proudly represented the team in the community well after his playing days were over,” Lurie said in a statement.

Bergey, who had 27 career interceptions, highlighted by five in 1974, was one of 60 nominees that the Pro Football Hall of Fame seniors committee considered this fall. He failed to advance to the next round.

His last season was 1980 under coach Dick Vermeil, when the Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV. Bergey, who played college ball at Arkansas State, played in all 16 games but he retired because of a lingering knee injury.

“I always had a sense that we were moving in the right direction,” Bergey said in 2015. “Even in the early years [under Vermeil] when the wins were few and far between, we could see the intensity of the play picking up. Dick’s personality rubbed off on us.”

Bergey served in various roles on Eagles radio broadcasts after he retired.

“Number 66 was one of the greatest players of all time,” longtime Eagles announcer Merrill Reese wrote on social media. “Nobody ever loved his family, friends, and Eagles fans more. May Bubba rest in peace.”

Bergey, who recorded nearly 1,200 tackles in seven seasons with the Eagles, was born Feb. 9, 1945, in South Dayton, New York.

Bergey was a plaintiff in the concussion-related lawsuit against the NFL.

Today, the football world mourns the loss of legendary Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey, who passed away at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer. Bergey was a key player for the Eagles during his time with the team, known for his hard-hitting style of play and fierce competitiveness on the field.

Bergey was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro selection during his 12-year career in the NFL, which also included stints with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 1988 and remains a beloved figure among Eagles fans to this day.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bergey’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Bill Bergey. Your legacy as one of the greatest linebackers in Eagles history will never be forgotten.

Eagles’ CJ Gardner-Johnson scores pick-six off Cooper Rush

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson quickly made amends.

A week after getting ejected for multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a loss to the Washington Commanders, Johnson made an instant impact against the Dallas Cowboys, taking an interception 69 yards for a touchdown on the Cowboys’ opening possession of Week 17.

Gardner-Johnson jumped a Cooper Rush pass intended for receiver Brandin Cooks, secured the pick and then raced down the right sideline for the score to put Philadelphia up 7-0. It was also Philadelphia’s first defensive touchdown of the season.

Gardner-Johnson was flagged twice last week for taunting, leading to his ejection in the second half. His absence was felt, as Jayden Daniels and the Commanders got hot and upended the Eagles, 36-33, handing Philadelphia its first loss in 11 games.

With Eagles QB Jalen Hurts sidelined with a concussion, it was Gardner-Johnson breaking down the team pregame before heading into the locker room for the final time. He went on to make one of his biggest contributions of the season on the field.

In a thrilling moment during the Eagles’ game against the Dallas Cowboys, CJ Gardner-Johnson made a game-changing play by intercepting Cooper Rush and returning it for a pick-six. The crowd erupted in cheers as Gardner-Johnson showcased his impressive skills and athleticism on the field. This interception not only shifted the momentum of the game in the Eagles’ favor, but it also showcased Gardner-Johnson’s impact as a key playmaker on defense. Cheers to CJ Gardner-Johnson for his incredible performance and helping lead the Eagles to victory! #FlyEaglesFly

Will Eagles’ Saquon Barkley break the single-season rushing record?

Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles’ star running back, has been making headlines with his explosive plays and incredible performances on the field. With the NFL single-season rushing record currently held by Eric Dickerson at 2,105 yards, many fans and analysts are wondering if Barkley has what it takes to break this longstanding record.

Barkley has shown time and time again that he is a force to be reckoned with, using his speed, agility, and power to evade defenders and gain yards on the ground. In just a few seasons in the league, he has already established himself as one of the top running backs in the NFL, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors.

While breaking the single-season rushing record is no easy feat, Barkley has the talent and determination to make it happen. With a strong offensive line to block for him and a dynamic quarterback in Jalen Hurts to keep defenses honest, Barkley has all the tools he needs to put up big numbers on the ground.

If he can stay healthy and continue to perform at a high level, there’s no doubt that Barkley has a shot at breaking the single-season rushing record. Eagles fans will be eagerly watching and cheering him on as he chases this historic milestone. Stay tuned to see if Barkley can etch his name in the record books!
