Jalen Hurts injury update: Eagles QB out for Week 17 vs. Cowboys due to concussion; Kenny Pickett to start

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is officially out against the Dallas Cowboys for Sunday’s Week 17 game. Hurts remains in concussion protocol, meaning Kenny Pickett will be the starter.

Eagles fans had their holiday season somewhat spoiled when Hurts exited Philadelphia’s Week 16 showdown against the Commanders early after suffering a head injury. With Hurts out, the Commanders rallied to pull off an upset that hindered Philadelphia’s chances at obtaining the NFC’s top playoff seed.

Hurts received a “did not practice” designation during Wednesday’s projected injury report (the Eagles did not practice), and again on Thursday. On Friday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gave an update, saying, “It’s going to be tough for him to make it.”

This is similar to what he said on Thursday, when he noted that Hurts is still in the concussion protocol ahead of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

NFL Media reported later Thursday that these revelations suggest Hurts remains in the early stages of the NFL’s five-step protocol for returning from a concussion.

Backups Pickett and Tanner McKee were seen warming up alongside Ian Book, who was recently signed to the Eagles’ practice squad, during practice this week. Pickett, who played in the majority of this past Sunday’s game, was listed as limited during Wednesday’s projected practice with a rib injury, and a full participant Thursday. He said he doesn’t expect to have any limitations on Sunday.

“Something I’ll have to deal with,” Pickett said while alluding to his injury.

Hurts suffered the injury during a 13-yard run on the Eagles’ second series against the Commanders. He left the game after getting tackled by Commanders veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner. Ahead 7-0 at that point, Pickett entered the game and immediately completed a 10-yard pass to A.J. Brown. The duo capped off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown, Pickett’s first touchdown since being traded from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia this past offseason.

Pickett led the Eagles on five more scoring drives, but Philadelphia came up short after Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels led Washington on a successful two-minute drill that was capped off by his game-winning touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder with six seconds left.

The loss prevented the Eagles from clinching their third division title in four years. Philadelphia can, however, take the NFC East division title again if they defeat the rival Cowboys on Sunday (they’ll also clinch the NFC East if the Commanders lose to the Falcons). The Eagles may be counting on Pickett in that game if Hurts remains in the protocol.

While he’s only in his third season, Pickett played in a similar circumstance during his rookie season in Pittsburgh. At 3-7 through 10 games, the Steelers had virtually no margin for error as far as their playoff hopes were concerned. While Pittsburgh ultimately did not make the playoffs that year, they got close after Pickett helped lead them to a 6-1 record during their final seven games. That stretch included three game-winning drives led by Pickett, the first quarterback taken in the 2022 NFL Draft

“I thought Kenny responded really well as far as just hopping in there,” Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said of Pickett’s performance against the Commanders. “I thought the way he handled the first drive, he hopped in there, it was a third-and-7, and converted. Resulted in a touchdown that drive.

“I thought he certainly did a lot of good things in the game. Ultimately we all collectively didn’t do enough to finish that game. I think it’s an awesome opportunity for us to all learn and grow from, but I thought Kenny battled the whole entire way.”

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts for their crucial Week 17 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Hurts suffered a concussion during last week’s game against the Washington Football Team and has been ruled out for this week’s game.

In his absence, rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett will get the start for the Eagles. Pickett, who was selected in the first round of this year’s draft, has seen limited playing time this season but will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills in a must-win game for Philadelphia.

The Eagles will need to win their final game of the season in order to secure a playoff spot, making this matchup against the Cowboys even more crucial. With Hurts sidelined, all eyes will be on Pickett as he looks to lead the Eagles to victory and keep their postseason hopes alive. Stay tuned for more updates on Hurts’ status and Pickett’s performance in this pivotal game.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts remains in concussion protocol

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles coach Nick Sirianni signaled that Kenny Pickett will get the start Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys as Jalen Hurts continues to recover from a concussion.

“[Hurts] is still in the protocol. It’s going to be tough for him to make it this week,” Sirianni said Friday prior to the quarterback being officially ruled out.

Hurts exited last week’s game against the Washington Commanders midway through the first quarter after his head collided with the turf as he was hit by linebacker Frankie Luvu while going to the ground following a 13-yard run.

Hurts was replaced by Pickett, who went 14-of-24 for 143 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 36-33 loss.

Pickett injured his ribs in the fourth quarter when he was wrestled down in the backfield by linebacker Bobby Wagner. He remained in the game but had X-rays taken immediately afterward and follow-up tests Monday.

Pickett did not reveal the results of those tests but said the injury “is something that I’m going to have to deal with.” He plans on wearing additional padding around the rib area in addition to the flak jacket that he normally wears on game day.

Tanner McKee will assume the role of No. 2 quarterback behind Pickett. A sixth-round pick out of Stanford in 2023, McKee has impressed in training camp practices and in preseason games over the past two seasons. He has been working on taking snaps from center Cam Jurgens this week so it’s not new to him should he be called on in Sunday’s game.

The Eagles’ chances of securing the top seed in the NFC dropped to 4% following the loss to the Commanders, per NFL NextGen Stats, but Philadelphia can still win the division with a victory over Dallas or a Commanders loss or tie to the Atlanta Falcons.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts remains in concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in the team’s recent game. The second-year quarterback is being closely monitored by medical staff as he works towards a full recovery.

This news comes as a blow to the Eagles, who were hoping to have Hurts back on the field for their upcoming game. In his absence, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew will likely step in to lead the offense.

Concussions are always a serious concern in football, and the Eagles will undoubtedly take every precaution necessary to ensure Hurts’ health and safety. Fans are hopeful for a speedy recovery for the talented young quarterback and are eagerly awaiting his return to the field.

How Eagles’ slim path to No. 1 hurts Saquon Barkley’s NFL record chase

As the NFL regular season nears its end, the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in a tight race for the coveted No. 1 seed in the NFC. While this is exciting news for Eagles fans, it unfortunately has implications for New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley and his pursuit of an NFL record.

Barkley, who has been having a standout season, is currently chasing the single-season rushing record set by Eric Dickerson in 1984. With only a few games left in the season, Barkley’s chances of breaking this record were already slim. However, the Eagles’ strong performance and potential lock on the No. 1 seed in the NFC make his path even more difficult.

With the Eagles likely to rest their starters in the final week of the season, Barkley may not have the opportunity to rack up the necessary yardage to break the record. Additionally, if the Eagles secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, they may choose to limit Barkley’s playing time in their potential matchups, further hindering his chances.

While it’s disappointing news for Barkley and his fans, the Eagles’ success is ultimately a positive for the team and their supporters. Nonetheless, Barkley’s record chase serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges that come with pursuing individual accolades in a team sport.

Eagles Predicted To Add $80 Million 6-Time Pro Bowler

The Philadelphia Eagles already have plenty of star power but could more be on the way after the 2024 season ends?

Philadelphia is one of the best teams in the National Football League and is a serious Super Bowl contender even with a loss against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The Eagles are built to contend at least for the next few years and that should make Philadelphia a hub for veterans looking to get a Super Bowl ring before their careers come to a close.

Because of this, Bleacher Report’s scouting department predicted that the Eagles will add six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen this upcoming offseason.

“2025 Free Agency: WR Keenan Allen, Chicago Bears,” Bleacher Report said. “Philadelphia has been searching for a third wide receiver to pair with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith for a couple of years now and hasn’t had any luck finding a good one.

“So, the front office could explore the free-agent market for a veteran receiver who is looking to make one final push to get a Lombardi Trophy rather than cashing in and stockpiling targets. Allen could fit that description, having only made the playoffs three times and never winning a playoff game during his 12 seasons. While the 32-year-old is having a down year in a bad Bears offense, he still has six touchdowns on the campaign and is a year removed from a 1,200-yard performance.”

Allen will be a free agent this upcoming offseason ends with his four-year, $80 million deal coming to an end. Could the Eagles go out and get him to pair with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith?

More NFL: Eagles Fan-Favorite Responds To Surprising Ejection

In a shocking turn of events, the Philadelphia Eagles are rumored to be adding a 6-time Pro Bowler to their roster, with an estimated contract worth $80 million. This move has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, as fans and analysts alike speculate on how this addition will impact the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

The identity of the Pro Bowler has not been officially confirmed, but sources close to the team suggest that this player is a game-changer who will bring a new level of talent and experience to the Eagles’ roster. With an impressive track record of success in the league, this player is expected to make an immediate impact on the field and elevate the team to new heights.

As fans eagerly await the official announcement from the Eagles, excitement continues to build around this potential addition. Will this Pro Bowler be the missing piece that propels the Eagles to Super Bowl contention? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Philadelphia Eagles are making bold moves to secure their place as a dominant force in the NFL. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Eagles sign Ian Book due to Jalen Hurts concussion, Kenny Pickett ribs

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a quick move to bolster their quarterback depth after Jalen Hurts suffered a concussion and Kenny Pickett injured his ribs. The team has signed former Notre Dame standout Ian Book to provide support behind backup quarterback Gardner Minshew.

Book, a dynamic playmaker with a strong arm and impressive mobility, will provide the Eagles with an experienced option at the quarterback position. The team is hopeful that Hurts and Pickett will recover quickly, but having Book in the mix will ensure that they have a capable signal-caller to rely on in the meantime.

Eagles fans are excited to see what Book can bring to the team and are hopeful that he can help lead the team to victory in their upcoming games. Stay tuned for updates on Book’s progress with the Eagles as they navigate through this challenging time at the quarterback position. #FlyEaglesFly #IanBook #NFLFreeAgency

Eagles vs. Cowboys preview: Watch this live NFC East Mixtape special episode

This is a weird Dallas Week.

In most years, a Week 17 game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys is a high-stakes, prime-time battle that determines the winner of the NFC East.

This season, there just isn’t a lot of juice for this matchup. And that sentiment is echoed by the start time getting flexed up from 4:25 PM Eastern to 1:00 PM. People aren’t exactly dying to see what might be Kenny Pickett or Tanner McKee vs. Cooper Rush.

But while this game doesn’t mean much for the Cowboys, who’ve already been officially eliminated from playoff contention, the Eagles obviously have serious motivation in this spot. With either a win or tie, the Birds will officially clinch their division and no worse than the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff picture.

In order to preview this game and also discuss bigger picture Eagles/Cowboys topics, I’ll be getting together with my frenemy RJ Ochoa from Blogging The Boys for a live special episode of the NFC East Mixtape.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles: Week 17 matchups to watch

The Dallas Cowboys and the rest of the league have only two games remaining on the regular-season schedule before postseason gets underway. After learning they were eliminated from the playoffs last week prior to their Sunday night matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas still played to win and will likely do the same this week.

The Philadelphia Eagles present an interesting matchup. This is a team that has been playing really well all season, but was upset a week ago by their division rival, the Washington Commanders. They still have something to play for as far as winning the NFC East and playoff seeding is concerned, and will likely be doing their best to put another “W” in the win column.

Today, we thought we would identify a few intriguing matchups to keep an eye on in the second and last meeting between the Cowboys and Eagles this year.

Cowboys’ run defense vs. Eagles’ RB Saquon Barkley

All eyes will be on Saquon Barkley in the final two games of the 2024 regular-season. He is currently on pace to break a 40-year-old rushing record set by Eric Dickerson. Right now he has a total of 1,688 rushing yards, needing 278 yards to eclipse the record of 2,105 set by Dickerson in 1984 in a 16-game season. Barkley needs to average 139 rushing yards over the last two games to accomplish this feat. The only thing standing in his way is the Dallas Cowboys this week and the New York Giants next week in the regular-season finale.

Brock Hoffman vs. Eagles’ DT Jalen Carter

Brock Hoffman has played a total of 375 offensive snaps this year at both left and right guard as well as center. He has also started five games this season as an injury fill in. He could currently be in contention to be Zack Martin’s replacement next year at RG, but will still need to continue to prove himself over the final two regular-season games. This week he will be tested by the Eagles young and talented DT Jalen Carter. How well he’s able to stand up to him could go a long ways earning a potential starting gig next season.

DaRon Bland vs. Eagles’ WR A.J. Brown

DaRon Bland was tasked to pretty much shadow Mike Evans the majority of the game last week and did pretty good job containing him, only allowing a total of five catches for 69 yards. He could be asked to do the same thing this week against the Philadelphia Eagles No. 1 WR A.J. Brown. This is one of those best against best matchups we all love to watch to see how things play out. Keep an eye on No. 26 this week and next, because he’s still looking for his first interception this year and has two games left to play to secure one of the season.

As we head into the final week of the NFL regular season, all eyes are on the highly anticipated matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. With playoff implications on the line, both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win in this divisional showdown. Here are some key matchups to watch in this must-see game:

1. Dak Prescott vs. Jalen Hurts: The battle of the quarterbacks will be a crucial factor in determining the outcome of this game. Prescott has been a force to be reckoned with this season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. On the other side, Hurts has shown flashes of brilliance in his rookie season and will be looking to outduel the veteran signal-caller.

2. Ezekiel Elliott vs. Miles Sanders: The running backs will play a significant role in this matchup, with Elliott and Sanders both looking to establish the ground game early on. Elliott has been a workhorse for the Cowboys, while Sanders has been a dynamic threat for the Eagles. Whichever team can establish the run game early on will have a significant advantage.

3. Trevon Diggs vs. DeVonta Smith: The battle between the rookie cornerback and wide receiver will be one to watch. Diggs has been a standout performer for the Cowboys this season, while Smith has been a reliable target for Hurts. The matchup between these two talented players could be a game-changer.

4. Micah Parsons vs. Dallas Goedert: The battle between the rookie linebacker and tight end will be a key matchup to watch. Parsons has been a game-changer for the Cowboys defense, while Goedert has been a reliable target for Hurts. Keeping an eye on this matchup could provide insight into how the game will unfold.

Overall, the Week 17 matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles is sure to be a thrilling contest with playoff implications on the line. Be sure to tune in to see how these key matchups play out and which team will come out on top.
