  • ‘A Complete Unknown’ earns eight Academy Award nominations

To a Bob Dylan noob like me, A Complete Unknown forced me to set down my prejudices and pick up folk music. I cannot do justice to Bob Dylan—artistically, spiritually, or historically; people spend their entire lives appreciating his art. Published, academic papers analyze his lyrics, so profound is his songwriting.

He’s one of Time’s top 100 most influential people of the 20th century: He is a “master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation.” He is the only songwriter to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; he didn’t show up to receive it. In short, I can’t do the man Bob Dylan justice in a short article.

So, let’s stick with reviewing the 2024 film, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet (Bob Dylan), Monica Barbaro (Joan Baez), Edward Norton (Pete Seeger), and Elle Fanning (Sylvie Russo), directed by James Mangold.

A Complete Unknown: Is it accurate?

Parental guidance is advised. The movie includes profanity, heavy drinking and smoking, and references to sex.

The biopic dramatizes Dylan’s early career, centering around two love interests. One is a historical person, folk singer Joan Baez, and a fictionalized woman, Sylvie Russo, who is nevertheless based on Dylan’s first wife, Sara Lownds. The dramatization focuses on Dylan’s famously cryptic persona and vagabond personality—an artist in the truest sense of the word.

Dylan’s inscrutable psyche is inseparable from his artistic genius. Although his early folk music and brilliant songwriting propelled him to stardom, A Complete Unknown explores his fight to find creative freedom, in the midst of winning—and losing—relationships.

The musical genius of A Complete Unknown

The movie is an outstanding accomplishment on the musical merits alone. Chalamet, Gen Z’s idol and celebrity crush, doesn’t coast in this monumental role. He recorded 40 Bob Dylan tracks for the film. You can listen to the cast’s original performances on the movie’s soundtrack. Their commitment to musical veracity is borderline insane. They used old microphones to capture similar audio quality, archival, period-piece guitars or their replicas, and didn’t use earpieces.

The unadulterated passion for artistry in the film floored me. For artists of any stripe, it’s hard to imagine how this film won’t inspire you.

What can Christians learn from A Complete Unknown?

Very few explicit mentions of religion were made, but existential questions, including those pertaining to the Civil Rights movement and the Cold War, feature prominently in the movie. However, I want to focus on the theme of artistic integrity.

The film climaxes when Dylan uses a full band and an electric guitar to play at the Newport Folk Festival—and receives violent reactions from the crowd and the festival leaders. Profound, moving art is contentious. It divides. It will, to paraphrase a line in The Complete Unknown, “strike you down to the ground.”

The canon of Christian Scripture, sixty-six books, is art—literature. It is the greatest collection of art in existence. And it surely divides people.

“The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

    Is Bob Dylan a Christian?

Dylan came to see the Bible as more than just beautiful literature, becoming a follower of Jesus in the late 70s and creating several gospel records. While he’s since been inconsistent, associating with Chabad, a Hasidic Jewish movement, at times, or saying music is his only true faith, he, as recently as 2022, said, “I’m a religious person. I read the scriptures a lot, meditate and pray, light candles in church. I believe in damnation and salvation, as well as predestination. The Five Books of Moses, Pauline Epistles, Invocation of the Saints, all of it.”

My point is not to interrogate Dylan’s faith. Instead, it is to point out that great art is a reflection of God’s creative powers. When we read the Bible as a list of rules, a science textbook, or anything but the kind of literature God inspired the original authors to write and pass down orally, we miss its power and beauty.

The Bible, just like a once-in-a-lifetime artist, like Doestoevksy, da Vinci, or Dylan, will “strike you to the ground.”

    But it’s more than that.

Are Artists above the consequences of sin?

Dylan’s erratic lifestyle eventually alienates his two love interests. His quiet, nonchalant persona is admirable regarding his treatment of fame and stardom. Dylan’s commitment to his artistic vision is laudable. Dostoevsky, one of the greatest authors and thinkers in history, was a Christian—and a raging gambling addict. You cannot separate a person’s life from their art, but even so, the greatest artists cannot escape the consequences of foolishness and sin.

I’m sure that Dylan would agree.

Do you appreciate the Bible, not just for how it tells us to live, but for its artistic beauty? Just as we cannot separate the artist from the art, we cannot separate God from his beautiful Word.

How can you give him glory for his Word, today?

  • Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro Earns First NBA All-Star Berth

As a rookie, an injury kept Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro from participating in the Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago.

This time, Herro will finally get to experience the feeling of being a participant in the weekend. On Thursday, he was chosen by the coaches as an Eastern Conference reserve. The announcment was made on TNT.

This marks Herro first All-Star appearance. He now joins fellow Kentucky alum Bam Adebayo as Wildcats to earn the honor as members of the Heat.

Herro has been the team’s best player this season despite the Jimmy Butler saga and inconsistency from Adebayo. Herro is averaging a career-high 24.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists. This is his finest season since he won the Sixth Man of the Year in 2022.

Herro has steadily developed into one of the league’s best players. After entering the NBA with a repuation as a shooter, he has proven he can impact the game in several areas.

This season, he’s improved as a rebounder, facilitator and defender.

Herro and second-year forward Jaime Jaquez are the Heat’s only representatives during the weekend. Jaquez was selected to the Rising Stars Challenge for a second straight season. Last year he also participated in the slam dunk contest.

All-Star Weekend takes place Feb. 14-16 in San Francisco at the home of the Golden State Warriors.

  • Drake Maye earns NFL Pro Bowl honors

It turns out the Patriots have a Pro Bowler on their roster after all.

After the team’s offensive and defensive players were shut out of the NFL’s Pro Bowl games, rookie quarterback Drake Maye has been added to the Pro Bowl roster as an alternate.

This season, the Patriots had one Pro Bowl player in special teamer Brendan Schooler, who dropped out of the games due to surgery. Maye is the first Patriots offensive player to be named to the Pro Bowl since 2021 when then-rookie quarterback Mac Jones was named to the team as an alternate.

The NFL revealed the Pro Bowl rosters earlier this month. At quarterback, Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson were named for the AFC. Allen was named the AFC starter, however, the quarterback suffered a wrist injury during the Bills AFC Championship loss to Kansas City and said he wasn’t sure if he would participate in the NFL games.

In the end, Allen and Jackson pulled out of the Pro Bowl. They were replaced by Maye and Russell Wilson.

In 13 games, Maye completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,276 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The No. 3 overall pick looked the part of a future franchise quarterback. He also added 421 yards on the ground to go with two rushing touchdowns.

Maye’s potential was part of why Mike Vrabel wanted to come to New England. The new head coach said he was excited to work with the athletic quarterback.

“He’s exciting, talented, ready to learn, and ready to continue to develop,” Vrabel told WBZ. “He’s athletic and mobile, has the ability to make throws to all part of the field with arm talent… There will be some new terminology and some carryover from what he’s had. I know that he’s ready to learn and is excited. We welcome that and want him to lead our football team.”

The NFL has changed the structure of the Pro Bowl. Starting Thursday, there will be the Pro Bowl Skills Show. There will be six competitions – Passing the Test, Satisfying Catches, The Big Spike, Relay Race, Helmet Harmony, and Dodgeball. That will air from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.

On Sunday, at 3 p.m., there will be the AFC vs. NFC flag football game. That can be vied on ESPN and ABC.

The Patriots didn’t have a single Pro Bowler last season. In 2022, they were represented by Matthew Judon. In 2021, they had three players voted on initially with Judon, Matthew Slater, and J.C. Jackson. Eventually, Jones was named an alternate at quarterback.

Now, Maye is the latest Patriots player to earn the honor.

Drake Maye, the standout quarterback for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, has been named to the prestigious NFL Pro Bowl for his exceptional performance this season.

Maye, a highly talented and versatile player, has been a force to be reckoned with on the field, showcasing his strong arm, accuracy, and leadership skills. His ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver clutch plays has set him apart from his peers and earned him the recognition he deserves.

Throughout the season, Maye has been a consistent and reliable performer, leading his team to victory and putting up impressive statistics. His dedication, hard work, and passion for the game have not gone unnoticed, and his selection to the Pro Bowl is a testament to his talent and determination.

As he prepares to showcase his skills on the NFL’s biggest stage, fans can expect to see Maye continue to impress and solidify his place among the league’s elite players. Congratulations to Drake Maye on this well-deserved honor! #DrakeMaye #NFLProBowl

  • Kitzbühel: Canada’s Jack Crawford earns first career win at holy grail of ski racing | Skiing

Canada’s James Crawford scorched to a maiden World Cup victory in the prestigious Kitzbühel downhill on Saturday in a race thankfully spared the spate of serious crashes that marred the super-G.

Crawford, with just four podium places to his name in seven seasons on the circuit, laid down a near-perfect run to clock 1min 53.64sec on the challenging 3.3km-long Streif course on the Hahnenkamm mountain overlooking the upmarket Austrian resort.

Switzerland’s Alexis Monney took second, at 0.08sec, with another Canadian, Cameron Alexander, rounding out the podium a further 0.14sec adrift.

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Amazing stuff, supreme excellence!” boomed the slopeside commentator of Crawford’s run in front of tens of thousands of baying ski fans in warm, sunny conditions.

“Canadian cowboys! Oh my word, incredible run by Crawford, he’s the man to beat!”

Crawford, a surprise winner of world super-G gold in Courchevel in 2023 and Olympic combined bronze medallist in Beijing the year previously, held on to bag €100,000 ($104,800) for his victory and set himself up nicely ahead of the 4-16 February world championships in Saalbach.

In-form Swiss racer Marco Odermatt, who tops the overall and downhill standings, won Friday’s super-G, but could only finish sixth in the blue riband event, at 0.55sec, as just eight-tenths of a second separated the top 13 racers.

Starting with bib number 20, Crawford hit motorway-coasting speeds of 140kmh, negotiating sections that have an 85% gradient and 80m jumps, all the while battling crippling centrifugal forces.

The icy course, which has a stomach-churning vertiginous start that propels racers to 100km/h in five seconds, features falls, snakes and rolls through a wide variety of terrain.

For those reasons, victory in Kitzbühel is seen as the holy grail of alpine skiing, often compared to winning at Wimbledon or the Formula One race in Monaco.

There is no doubt that there is a voyeuristic, gladitorial draw for the estimated 90,000-strong crowd who flock in for the Kitzbühel weekend.

But while airhorns and whistles made for a deafening arena, flares lit and flags waving, there was none of the crash drama of Friday, which saw French veteran Alexis Pinturault among three evacuated by helicopter, with a serious knee injury.

The event draws a heady mix between champagne-drinking glitterati and young locals revelling in an alcohol-fuelled rite of passage.

Among onlookers on Saturday was former California governor and Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Swedish football great Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“This is amazing, it feels like a home stadium,” said Ibrahimovic, who played for a host of European clubs including Ajax, Juventus, AC and Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United in a storied career.

    “I wish I was a skier, but I can’t ski!”

The iconic ski resort of Kitzbühel, Austria, witnessed a historic moment as Canada’s Jack Crawford claimed his first career win at the prestigious Hahnenkamm downhill race. Known as the “holy grail of ski racing,” the Hahnenkamm is one of the most challenging and revered races on the World Cup circuit.

Crawford, a rising star in the world of alpine skiing, put on a stellar performance on the treacherous Streif course, navigating the steep, icy slopes and daunting jumps with skill and precision. The Canadian skier’s victory marks a significant milestone in his career and solidifies his status as a force to be reckoned with in the competitive world of ski racing.

The win in Kitzbühel is not only a personal triumph for Crawford but also a proud moment for Canadian skiing, as he becomes the first Canadian male skier to win at the Hahnenkamm in over a decade. His achievement serves as inspiration for aspiring young skiers across the country and showcases the talent and potential of Canada’s ski racing program.

As Crawford celebrates his well-deserved victory, fans and spectators around the world are left in awe of his incredible skill and determination. With this win under his belt, the future looks bright for Jack Crawford as he continues to make a name for himself on the international stage. Congratulations to the new champion of Kitzbühel!

UFC 311 Results: Islam Makhachev Vs. Renato Moicano

In the main event, Islam Makhachev made short work of his late replacement foe, Renato Moicano.

Makhachev had no reason to accept a late replacement outside of the willingness to fight and earn a paycheck. The fight was an enormous risk for the defending champion as he was riding a 14-fight winning streak and tied with BJ Penn, Benson Henderson, and his coach, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the most title fight wins in UFC history with four. Simply put, Makhachev had much to lose against a fighter he had not trained for and who was essentially on a freeroll in the lightweight title fight.

Makhachev took the fight and rolled over the overmatched Moicano, the No. 10 ranked fighter in the official UFC lightweight rankings, with ease.

It won’t be a surprise if the UFC turns around and books him against Arman Tsarukyan, the man he was scheduled to face at UFC 311 before a back injury knocked him from the contest.

UFC 311 Results: Merab Dvalishvili Vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

The evening’s co-main event delivered one of the best bantamweight fights in UFC history. In that matchup, the champ, Merab Dvalishvili, entered the bout as a noticeable betting underdog to the challenger, Umar Nurmagomedov.

In one of the most grueling fights inside the Octagon, Dvalishvili put a pace on Nurmagomedov that the challenger could not sustain. Dvalishvili’s cardio is otherwordly. Facing him must be like running a marathon uphill with a 50-pound backpack full of constantly shifting liquid with tape over your mouth and one nostril. He puts fighters off balance in every way and never gives his opponents a chance to rest or reset. Nurmagomedov did well over the first three rounds, but he could not sustain that pace over a five-round fight, which cost him his unbeaten record.

However, with the high quality of the UFC 311 co-main event, it would not be surprising to see the UFC decide to run it back, for Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov are head and shoulders above the rest of the UFC bantamweight division.

California is one of the few remaining athletic commissions that discloses reported UFC fighter pay.

The SGPC, an apex gurdwara body, and several Sikh organisations held demonstrations against the movie outside cinemas, multiplexes and malls across the state.

Ranaut decried the demand for a ban on “Emergency” and said the film’s restricted screenings in parts of Punjab is a “complete harassment of art and the artist”.

“Emergency” also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman and late actor Satish Kaushik.
