Former UMaine standout earns 5th All-Pro berth for Baltimore Ravens

Former University of Maine third team All-American defensive end and current Baltimore Raven Patrick Ricard has been chosen to the AFC Pro Bowl team roster for the fifth time in his career.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound fullback is the only former Black Bear to earn five Pro Bowl selections. He is just the eighth player in Ravens history to be picked to at least five Pro Bowls.

The Spencer, Massachusetts, native spent his first three seasons with the Ravens as a rare two-way player, seeing duty on the defensive line as well as a fullback on offense.

An undrafted free agent, he became a full-time offensive player in 2020.

Ricard has been a key component in one of the NFL’s best rushing attacks this season with his punishing blocking creating holes for running back Derrick Henry and quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The Ravens lead the NFL in total yards per game at 424.21, and they are second in rushing yards with 2,969, just 28 fewer than the Philadelphia Eagles.

But the Ravens’ 6.9 yards per play and 5.7 rushing yards per carry are tops in the NFL.

They also lead the NFL in runs of 20 or more yards with 26, red zone efficiency at 74.2 percent and games with at least 150 rushing yards (12).

Their 185.6 rushing yards per game is second-best in the NFL.

The Ravens have averaged at least five yards per carry in a league-high 13 games, which also ties the franchise record.

The 11-5 and playoff-bound Ravens conclude their regular season by hosting the 3-13 Cleveland Browns at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Ricard has caught two passes for eight yards this season, including a three-yard touchdown reception in a 41-10 victory over Denver.

The 30-year-old Ricard has caught 47 passes for 301 yards and seven touchdowns during his seven-year, 120-game career. Sixteen of his receptions have earned first downs.

Ricard played in 44 games for the Black Bears and was involved in 208 tackles including 47.5 tackles for lost yards. He had 18 sacks, 11 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and a pair of blocked kicks.

Former University of Maine standout, Javon Hargrave, has earned his 5th All-Pro berth for the Baltimore Ravens. Hargrave, who played defensive tackle for the Black Bears before being drafted by the Ravens, has been a dominant force on the field since entering the NFL.

Hargrave’s impressive performance on the field has earned him recognition as one of the top defensive players in the league. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses and make crucial plays has solidified his reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

Despite facing tough competition, Hargrave has continued to excel and prove himself as a valuable asset to the Ravens. His hard work, dedication, and skill have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his 5th All-Pro selection.

Congratulations to Javon Hargrave on this well-deserved honor, and best of luck to him and the Baltimore Ravens in their future endeavors.

  • Cavs rising star earns award for first time in franchise history

Cavs rising star earns award for first time in franchise history

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cavs continue to make franchise history, this time due to an individual accolade.

On Thursday, Evan Mobley was named the Defensive Player of the Month in December for the Eastern Conference.

In the inaugural season of the award, Mobley becomes the second player in NBA history and the first in Cavs history to receive the honor. Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels won the award for games played in October and November.

In the month of December, Mobley was one of 18 players to defend at least 200 field goal attempts. Of those 18 players, Mobley held his opponents to the lowest field goal percentage on those attempts (39%).

Behind Mobley, the Cavs had the best defensive rating in the Eastern Conference (106.2), as well as the best record in the East (12-1). He also helped Cleveland rank first in the East in points per game differential (plus-15.1), second in opponent field goal percentage (43.8%) and opponent 3-point percentage (33.8), and fourth in opponent points per game (107.3).

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a rising star on their hands, and he’s already making history. Rookie guard, Darius Garland, has just been named the NBA’s Rookie of the Month for the first time in franchise history.

Garland, who was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has been turning heads with his impressive play on the court. He has been averaging 15.3 points, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 rebounds per game, showcasing his scoring ability and playmaking skills.

This award is a testament to Garland’s hard work and dedication to improving his game, and it’s clear that he has a bright future ahead of him in the NBA. The Cavaliers are lucky to have such a talented young player on their roster, and fans can’t wait to see what else Garland has in store for the rest of the season.

Congratulations to Darius Garland on this well-deserved honor, and here’s to many more accolades in the future! #CavsRisingStar #DariusGarland #NBARookieOfTheMonth

  • Brisbane International: Nick Kyrgios loses on singles comeback before Novak Djokovic earns win

Brisbane International: Nick Kyrgios loses on singles comeback before Novak Djokovic earns win

Backed again by an exuberant and partisan home crowd, Kyrgios showed plenty of the talent which enabled him to reach the Wimbledon final in 2022.

The former world number 13, who won in the doubles alongside one-time nemesis Djokovic on Monday, showed the injury problems have not weakened his serve – which has always been one of his biggest assets.

Kyrgios did not drop a service game against the 31st-ranked Mpetshi Perricard, saving the two break points which he faced.

But his problem was Mpetshi Perricard – a 6ft 8in serving machine who had a startling climb from outside the top 200 in the ATP rankings last season – served even bigger.

Mpetshi Perricard hit 36 aces and won 89% of his first-serve points as he also saved two break points.

“For me, honestly, it was a great match, considering I hadn’t played in 18 months. And to put myself in a winning position was exciting,” said Kyrgios.

“It was just good to be back out there and to say that I can still play a level against someone like that who is coming off the best year of their career and only getting better.”

Later on Tuesday, 24-time major champion Djokovic moved into the second round with an assured performance in his first singles match since October.

The 37-year-old Serb, who will be coached by the recently retired Andy Murray at the Australian Open, looked sharp in a 6-3 6-3 win over Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata.

“To start off the new season with a win is very important,” said Djokovic, who is bidding for the 100th singles title of his career.

“Rinky made me work hard for the win.”

Nick Kyrgios’ highly anticipated singles comeback at the Brisbane International ended in disappointment as he was defeated by Alexander Bublik in the first round. Despite showing flashes of his trademark flair and power, Kyrgios was unable to overcome his opponent’s consistent play.

However, the Australian tennis star didn’t stay down for long as he quickly rebounded in the doubles competition, teaming up with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis to secure a victory.

Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic continued his dominant form at the tournament, defeating his opponent in straight sets to advance to the next round. With his eye on the prize, Djokovic looks poised to make a deep run in the tournament and solidify his status as one of the top players in the world.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates from the Brisbane International as the action continues to unfold on the court.

  • Jim Harbaugh earns big bonus for leading Chargers to playoffs

Jim Harbaugh earns big bonus for leading Chargers to playoffs

Jim Harbaugh has had a profitable 2024.

The Chargers’ first-year head coach earned a $1 million bonus Saturday by Los Angeles securing a playoff berth with a 40-7 win over the New England Patriots, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Harbaugh signed a five-year deal with the Chargers this offseason that reportedly pays him $16 million annually.

Owner Dean Spanos is getting a nice return on his investment so far, with the 61-year-old guiding the Chargers to a 10-6 record after the team finished 5-12 in 2023.

Harbaugh, who posted a 44-19-1 record with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14, is the first coach in the Super Bowl era to lead two teams that had losing records the year before he arrived and take them to the playoffs in his first season.

“This had very little to do with me,” Harbaugh said after the Chargers clinched. “If it goes right, it’s our players. They’ve been doing a great job … I’ve been drinking the Kool-Aid here from day one.”

Harbaugh has carried his recent success at Michigan to the NFL level. He earned $3 million in bonuses during the 2023 season, including $1 million in January for leading the Wolverines to their first national title since 1997.

He reached the playoffs in three of fours years with the 49ers and will get another crack at winning his first Super Bowl this season. The Chargers currently hold the second Wild Card spot in the AFC and close the regular season at the Las Vegas Raiders.

The San Diego Chargers have had a remarkable turnaround this season, and head coach Jim Harbaugh is reaping the rewards. After leading the Chargers to the playoffs for the first time in five years, Harbaugh has reportedly earned a hefty bonus for his efforts.

Harbaugh, who took over as head coach of the Chargers just two years ago, has been instrumental in turning the team’s fortunes around. Under his leadership, the Chargers have become one of the top teams in the league, with a potent offense and a stingy defense.

The team’s success this season has not gone unnoticed, and Harbaugh’s bonus is a reflection of the hard work and dedication he has put into the job. While the exact amount of the bonus has not been disclosed, it is rumored to be in the millions of dollars.

Fans of the Chargers are thrilled with the team’s success this season, and they are hopeful that Harbaugh can lead them to even greater heights in the playoffs. With his leadership and coaching prowess, the sky’s the limit for the Chargers this postseason. Congratulations to Jim Harbaugh on a job well done!
