About Eastern Kentucky:

Fresh off its first conference regular season championship since 1979, Eastern Kentucky is off to a bit of an uneven start under seventh-year head coach A.W. Hamilton. The Colonels are 6-6, but the closest thing they have to a victory you can hang your hat on is a road win over 7-6 ETSU back in the first week of the season.

The Colonels, who were upset in the first round of last year’s Atlantic Sun tournament, are led by the two-pronged attack of veteran Devontae Blanton and newcomer George Kimble.

Blanton, now in his fifth season at EKU, currently leads the team in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (6.1 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg). Blanton isn’t a great outside shooter and he’s undersized around the rim at 6’6, but he is incredibly strong and has a terrific feel for the game once he gets into the lane. On most nights, the Colonels will go as he goes.

Kimble is the less polished of the two players, but I think he’s the more naturally gifted. He still gets out of control from time to time, but he’s doing a better job taking care of the ball than he was at the beginning of the season. The 6’2 sophomore has never seen a shot he didn’t like, and he will be launching early and often inside the Yum Center on Saturday afternoon.

EKU is playing a touch slower than Hamilton’s teams of the past have, but their overall DNA is the same. They want to get up and down, and they want to shoot a ton of threes. Like Louisville, they’re one of the leaders in the country in three-point fga per fgs, but unfortunately not one of the leaders in the country in made threes. The Colonels are hitting from beyond the arc at a 31.9 percent clip, 235th-best in D-I.

Defensively is where Eastern Kentucky has struggled the most this season. The battle cry for the Colonels when their opponents have the ball this season seems to be to gamble with reckless abandon. EKU is 28th in the country in steal percentage and 66th in forcing turnovers, but when they don’t come up with a takeaway, they are giving up an insane amount of high percentage shots right around the rim or from the perimeter. They also have the odd profile of being a terrific offensive rebounding team and a horrendous defensive rebounding team.

If Louisville takes care of the basketball, it should have a third straight impressive performance on offense. It would be another good afternoon to make open shots.

Notable:

—Louisville has won 15 consecutive games against Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels haven’t defeated the Cardinals since Dec. 4, 1963. That game was the first game ever played inside EKU’s McBrayer Arena.

—This will be Louisville’s first home game since Dec. 11. The Cardinals are 4-3 inside the KFC Yum Center so far this season.

—EKU ranks fourth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds with 15.83 per game.

—Eastern Kentucky was picked to finish second in the preseason Atlantic Sun media poll.

—The Louisville-EKU series is the longest of any team on the Cardinals’ schedule this year with 75 games between the programs.

—Louisville is 40-4 all-time in home games against Eastern Kentucky.

—EKU is 0-2 against ACC opponents this season, losing to Clemson and Pittsburgh. The Colonels led against both those teams at one point in the second half.

—Saturday’s game will mark the final non-conference contest of Louisville’s 2024-25 regular season schedule.

—Louisville has a 257-83 record against non-conference opponents over the last 23 seasons (includes postseason).

—Louisville has a 187-27 record in home regular season non-conference games over the last 23 seasons. The Cardinals are 111-18 at home in regular season non-conference games over the last 14 seasons.

—Inside the KFC Yum Center, Louisville has a 107-18 record in non-conference games.

—Louisville is 14-0 over the past 10 seasons when limiting opponents to no more than one three-point field goal.

—Since 2004, Louisville is 130-0 when leading by more than 10 points at halftime.

—Louisville is 115-0 all-time when scoring 100 or more points in non-overtime games.

—Louisville has won 163 consecutive games when holding an opponent under 50 points.

Ken Pomeroy Prediction: Louisville 86, Eastern Kentucky 69

The highly anticipated matchup between the Louisville Cardinals and the Eastern Kentucky Colonels is just around the corner, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Both teams are coming off strong performances in their previous games, making this showdown one to watch.

The Louisville Cardinals have had a solid start to the season, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive tenacity. Led by star player, Malik Cunningham, the Cardinals have been able to put up big numbers on the scoreboard while also shutting down their opponents on the defensive end. With a perfect record so far, Louisville will be looking to continue their winning streak against Eastern Kentucky.

On the other hand, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels have also been impressive in their early season games. With a well-rounded team and strong leadership from their coaches, the Colonels have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with. Their ability to score in a variety of ways and play tough defense will certainly pose a challenge for the Cardinals.

As these two teams prepare to face off, fans can expect a fast-paced and competitive game. Both Louisville and Eastern Kentucky will be looking to prove themselves and come out on top in this exciting matchup. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as these two rivals battle it out on the court.

Maryland men’s basketball vs Maryland Eastern Shore preview

Maryland men’s basketball returns to Xfinity Center Saturday to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore for its final regular season nonconference game of the season.

A win would push the Terps to a stellar 10-1 overall record in nonconference play and 11-2 overall. They are 18-0 all-time against the Hawks, who have gotten off to a slow start in 2024.

Saturday’s matchup will tip off at noon and be televised on Big Ten Network.

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (4-11, 0-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference)

2023-24 record: 9-10, 4-10 MEAC

Head coach Cleo Hill Jr. is in his first year leading the Hawks after taking over for Jason Crafton, who led the team to an 18-13 record — their best in nearly 50 years — in 2022-23. Hill was previously head coach at Division II Winston-Salem State.

Maryland Eastern Shore struggled last season and have seen much of the same result in its 2024 nonconference slate, which has included teams at widely varying levels of college basketball.

It has taken on No. 11 UConn, No. 23 Arkansas, No. 24 Illinois and Vanderbilt, losing those games by an average of 53.5 points. But it’s also taken on four non-Division I opponents, who also represent the Hawks’ four wins. Like Maryland, the Hawks’ nonconference slate ends Saturday.

Players to know

Ketron Shaw, junior guard, 6-foot-5, No. 0 — Shaw is the MEAC’s leading scorer so far this season, averaging 19.5 points per game. But he’s far from just a pure scoring threat, he’s also top-10 in his conference and leads his team in both rebounds (5.9) and assists (3.2) per game. Shaw’s size advantage over Maryland’s guard trio is the Hawks’ biggest asset in its pursuit of an upset.

Evan Johnson, graduate guard, 6-foot-0, No. 3 — Johnson transferred to Maryland Eastern Shore this past offseason after three years at Georgia State and one year at UNC Asheville. He’s immediately slid into a key role offensively, averaging the second-most points per game on the team with 13.2.

Jalen Ware, graduate forward, 6-foot-8, No. 24 — Ware averages just 4.9 points per game, but is Maryland Eastern Shore’s biggest defensive contributor and an asset on the boards. He leads the team in steals (0.9) and blocks (0.6) per game, while also contributing 5.6 rebounds a contest.

Strength

Big-game experience. The Hawks have already travelled to four high-major opponents, three of whom are ranked. Many low-level opponents have come to College Park with wide eyes and immediately crumbled under that pressure — Maryland Eastern Shore won’t be one of them.

Weakness

Offense and defense. Maryland Eastern Shore posts the second-fewest points per game (69.7) and second-most points per game allowed (80.5) in the MEAC, which is far from a college basketball powerhouse. The Hawks are yet to beat a Division I opponent, let alone a high-major one.

Three things to watch

1. Can Selton Miguel continue his hot streak? The fifth-year guard has scored 24 points in back-to-back games, and has reached double figures in his last six. He’ll look Saturday to extend that momentum against another inferior opponent into the bulk of Big Ten play.

2. Can Tafara Gapare bounce back? Gapare had a sensational stretch earlier in nonconference play, headlined by a 19-point performance against Bucknell, but has scored just 16 points across the Terps’ previous three games. Maryland Eastern Shore is Gapare’s last chance to make an impression before Big Ten play solidifies the rotation.

3. Last test before the bulk of conference play. The Terps have routinely beat up on low-level opponents in their nonconference slate, but the Hawks are their last chance to do so this season. Maryland travels to Oregon on Jan. 2 to kick off the remainder of its Big Ten slate.

Maryland Men’s Basketball Set to Face Maryland Eastern Shore: Game Preview

The Maryland men’s basketball team is gearing up to take on Maryland Eastern Shore in an exciting matchup that is sure to showcase some impressive skills on both sides of the court.

The Terrapins are coming off a strong start to the season, with key players like Eric Ayala and Donta Scott leading the way. Their high-octane offense and stifling defense have proven to be a challenge for opponents, and they will be looking to continue their winning streak against Maryland Eastern Shore.

On the other hand, Maryland Eastern Shore is looking to make a statement with their young and talented roster. Led by standout guard Canaan Bartley, the Hawks have shown flashes of potential and will be hungry for a signature win against a tough opponent like the Terrapins.

Fans can expect an intense and fast-paced game as both teams look to outplay each other on the court. With bragging rights and momentum on the line, this matchup is one you won’t want to miss.

Be sure to tune in and support your favorite team as they battle it out for victory. Let’s see who comes out on top in this exciting showdown between Maryland and Maryland Eastern Shore.

Eastern Notes: Shamet, Nets, Lillard, Middleton, White

Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau is happy to have Landry Shamet back on his roster after the veteran wing recovered from the dislocated shoulder he suffered during preseason with the team. Praising Shamet for his leadership and ability to play multiple positions, Thibodeau said the 27-year-old had a “great” training camp and was deserving of a roster spot once he was healthy.

“He’s been around, he’s played in big games,” Thibodeau said (Twitter video link). “He knows how to play off people extremely well. The three-point shooting, he can handle the ball (or) play off the ball.”

After officially re-signing with the Knicks on Monday, Shamet was active for the club’s game vs. Toronto and made a brief appearance in the fourth quarter with 84 seconds left and New York holding a 16-point lead. He made a 13-footer on his first possession for the Knicks’ final points of the night.

“I was so amped up today, man, I’ve been chomping at the bit for a while,” Shamet said after the win, according to Peter Botte of The New York Post. “It just felt good to be back in the building, suit it up, be with the guys, lock in on a game plan, and be a teammate. I’m just grateful that I felt good to get in the game there at the end and kind of just see the first one go in.”

Here’s more from around the Eastern Conference:

  • Injured Nets guards Cam Thomas and Ziaire Williams are nearing their respective returns, per Brian Lewis of The New York Post, who says both players participated in 5-on-5 action on Monday. “It seems like they’re getting close,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said. Thomas (left hamstring strain) has been out since November 25, while Williams (left knee sprain) hasn’t played since Dec. 1.
  • Bucks guard Damian Lillard missed Monday’s game due to an illness, but the calf issue that sidelined him on Saturday has improved, tweets Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “He’s doing much better,” head coach Doc Rivers said. “I expect him to possibly be ready (for Thursday’s game vs. Brooklyn), but then he gets sick.” Rivers, who jokingly referred to the illness affecting Lillard, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and other Bucks as the “Vegas flu,” clarified on Monday that the bug began circulating before the NBA Cup semifinals. “About a week before Vegas, (this illness) has gone down the chain of guys getting sick, but it happens,” Rivers said.
  • With Lillard and Antetokounmpo unavailable vs. Chicago on Monday, Bucks forward Khris Middleton looked like his old All-Star self for a second straight game, scoring a team-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting in just 23 minutes to lead the club to a comfortable 21-point victory. Jim Owczarski of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has the story.
  • Coby White‘s .414 FG% and .358 3PT% are his lowest marks since his rookie year, and he has been especially struggling as of late, shooting 27.8% on three-pointers since Nov. 27. But the Bulls guard isn’t using ankle and groin injuries as an excuse, tweets K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Sports Network, and his teammates aren’t worried about him, according to Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times. “There’s ups and downs throughout an NBA season,” Zach LaVine said on Monday. “We’ll all be OK.”

Eastern Notes: Shamet, Nets, Lillard, Middleton, White

1. Landry Shamet has been a key contributor for the Brooklyn Nets this season, providing sharpshooting and solid defense off the bench. His ability to space the floor and knock down threes has been crucial for a team with championship aspirations.

2. The Nets continue to be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, despite dealing with injuries to key players like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Their depth and versatility have allowed them to stay competitive and maintain a high level of play.

3. Damian Lillard’s rumored interest in joining the New York Knicks or Philadelphia 76ers has sparked speculation about potential blockbuster trades in the Eastern Conference. The addition of a player of Lillard’s caliber could shift the balance of power in the East.

4. Khris Middleton has been a consistent performer for the Milwaukee Bucks this season, providing scoring and playmaking alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. Middleton’s ability to create his own shot and knock down clutch shots makes him a valuable asset for the Bucks.

5. Coby White has shown flashes of potential for the Chicago Bulls, but inconsistency has been a problem for the young guard. As the Bulls look to make a playoff push, White will need to step up and provide reliable scoring and playmaking for the team to succeed.

The Simulation Hypothesis: An MIT Computer Scientist Reveals Why AI, Quantum Physics, and Eastern Mystics All Point to the Same Conclusion

Have you ever stopped to wonder if the reality we perceive is actually just a sophisticated computer simulation? This mind-bending concept, known as the Simulation Hypothesis, has gained traction in recent years thanks to the work of renowned computer scientist Rizwan Virk.

In his book “The Simulation Hypothesis: An MIT Computer Scientist Shows Why AI, Quantum Physics, and Eastern Mystics All Agree We Are in a Video Game,” Virk explores the idea that our universe may be nothing more than a highly advanced simulation created by some higher intelligence.

Drawing on insights from artificial intelligence, quantum physics, and ancient Eastern philosophies, Virk makes a compelling case for why all these seemingly disparate fields converge on the same conclusion: that we are living in a computer-generated reality.

According to Virk, advancements in artificial intelligence have shown us just how realistic virtual worlds can be created by computers. Quantum physics, on the other hand, has revealed the bizarre, non-intuitive nature of reality at the smallest scales, suggesting that our universe may not be as solid and real as we perceive it to be.

And when we look to Eastern mystics and their teachings on the illusory nature of reality, we find further support for the Simulation Hypothesis. Could it be that the ancient sages were onto something when they spoke of the world as a mere illusion, a dream-like construct?

As we continue to push the boundaries of technology and delve deeper into the mysteries of the universe, the idea that we are living in a simulation becomes increasingly plausible. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, Virk’s book is sure to challenge your perceptions of reality and leave you questioning the nature of existence itself.

So, are we just players in a cosmic video game, pawns in a grand simulation orchestrated by some higher power? Dive into “The Simulation Hypothesis” and decide for yourself. The truth may be stranger than we ever imagined.
