Ohio Edison now adding surcharge on to all customers who pay bill from bank account without autopay
Customers who pay their electric bill with a credit card are used to having a surcharge added to the bill to cover the cost tacked on by the credit card companies.
However, FirstEnergy, the parent company of Ohio Edison, is now adding a surcharge to customers who pay their monthly electric bill from their checking accounts. The new policy started in January.
FirstEnergy spokesperson tells 21 News the company recently switched to a new third-party electronic payment processor — ACI Speedpay — part of parent company Western Union.
The new vendor is charging Ohio Edison Customers a 50-cent per transaction fee for all one-time payments, which includes people who paid their bills from their checking or savings accounts.
Previously, customers who provided their bank routing numbers but were not on an autopay plan to Ohio Edison were not charged any service fees.
FirstEnergy spokesperson Hannah Catlett tells 21 News that residential customers enrolled in automatic payments, including AutoPay Credit Card and AutoPay Bank Account programs and commercial customers enrolled in the AutoPay Bank Account program will not be charged fees.
The Ohio Edison spokesperson said, “By processing electronic payments through a third-party vendor, we can more seamlessly maintain compliance and better serve our customers by continuing to offer additional payment options.”
Ohio Edison says it is now giving customers more options to pay, including using services like PayPal and Venmo.
According to Ohio Edison’s website, there are more than one million Ohio Edison customers in northeast and northcentral Ohio.
Ohio Edison customer service line is 1-800-633-4766 for anyone with questions or concerns about the new surcharge to customers or you can email them with concerns.
Attention Ohio Edison customers: Starting next month, Ohio Edison will be adding a surcharge to all customers who pay their bills. This new surcharge will be applied to your bill every month, so be sure to budget accordingly. Stay tuned for more information on how this surcharge will affect your monthly payments. Thank you for your understanding.

Attention Ohio Edison customers: Starting next month, Ohio Edison will be adding a surcharge to all customers who pay their bills from their bank account without utilizing autopay. This means that if you currently pay your bill manually from your bank account, you may see an additional charge on your next statement. To avoid this surcharge, we recommend signing up for autopay, which will automatically deduct your bill from your bank account each month. Not only will this help you avoid the surcharge, but it will also make managing your payments more convenient and hassle-free. If you have any questions or concerns about this new policy, please contact Ohio Edison customer service for more information. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

This audio is auto-generated. Please let us know if you have feedback.Dive Brief:
- Two affiliated New York utilities are soliciting at least 310 MW of utility-scale energy storage resources across multiple smaller portfolios that can connect to the state grid by the end of 2030 on contracts of up to 15 years, according to a Dec. 16 request for proposals.
- The joint solicitation by the Consolidated Edison Co. of New York and Orange & Rockland Utilities calls for systems that can achieve maximum discharge for at least four hours and are located entirely within the utilities’ respective service territories.
- The solicitation meets the requirements of a 2022 New York State Public Service Commission order requiring Con Edison to procure 300 MW and O&R to procure at least 10 MW of energy storage by 2030, the utilities said.
Dive Insight:
The joint solicitation moves New York closer to meeting its goal of deploying 6 GW of energy storage by 2030.
Announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul, D, in early 2022, the 6-GW roadmap represents a doubling of the state’s previous 2030 goal of 3 GW of energy storage. It calls for 3 GW of new utility-scale storage, 1.5 GW of new retail storage and 200 MW of new residential storage to complement about 1.3 GW of existing energy storage on New York’s grid as of mid-2024.
Con Edison and O&R join other New York utilities, such as Central Hudson Gas & Electric, in issuing RFPs to meet the requirements of the NYPSC order.
The Dec. 16 solicitation invites proposals from distribution- or transmission-connected individual projects or multi-project portfolios with greater than 5 MW of dispatchable capacity. Portfolios may include as many as 10 individual projects of at least 2 MW dispatchable capacity, provided all projects within the portfolio are located within the same New York Independent System Operator zone, commit to commencing commercial operation within the same year and hold the same contract duration, among other requirements, the utilities said.
“Downstate New York presents unique challenges for developers looking to place projects on the grid,” such as permitting and siting, said Allan Drury, spokesperson for Con Edison. “Con Edison believes that providing a way for smaller distribution-connected projects to participate in the program can boost such development by providing potential economies of scale.”
Con Edison could give preference in contracting and compensation to projects or portfolios proposed to be operational by specified service dates in certain “preferred locations” it identified within its service territory, according to the RFP:
- By the end of 2027 in the Cooper Square, Flatbush, Richmond Hill, Crown Heights or Ridgewood networks;
- By the end of 2028 in the Grasslands networks;
- By the end of 2029 in the West Bronx network; and
- By the end of 2030 in the Southeast Bronx, Fresh Kills or Willowbrook networks.
Though “all proposed projects will be subject to the same timelines and requirements,” those in preferred locations “have more potential to proactively align with future grid needs,” Drury said.
O&R did not identify any preferred locations within its service territory.
The RFP “set four hours as the minimum [duration] because we want to provide an opportunity for longer-duration battery systems if they can meet the performance needs of the program and remain economically competitive with other proposed projects,” Drury said. It is not restricted to lithium-ion systems, he added.
Con Edison and O&R aim to notify successful bidders by July 31, 2025, and execute contracts by the end of 2025. The total capacity of projects selected through the RFP may exceed the target set out in NYPSC’s storage order “[depending] on the competitiveness of the bids,” the utilities said
Con Edison and Orange & Rockland (O&R) have recently issued a request for proposal (RFP) for 310 megawatts of energy storage, with a specific focus on longer-duration batteries. This move highlights the growing importance of energy storage in the transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy grid.The RFP seeks to procure energy storage projects that can provide longer-duration storage capabilities, ensuring a reliable and stable energy supply during peak demand periods or when renewable energy sources are not producing electricity. By incorporating longer-duration batteries into their energy storage portfolio, Con Edison and O&R aim to enhance grid flexibility, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support the integration of more renewable energy resources.
This initiative aligns with the utilities’ commitment to advancing clean energy technologies and achieving their sustainability goals. By investing in energy storage solutions with longer-duration capabilities, Con Edison and O&R are not only enhancing grid reliability but also contributing to the decarbonization of the energy sector.
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, the deployment of energy storage technologies will play a crucial role in enabling a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy grid. Con Edison and O&R’s issuance of this RFP signals their proactive approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by the transition to a cleaner and more dynamic energy system.
