  • PREVIEW: Red Wings open Western Canada leg of four-game road trip in Edmonton on Thursday

The Red Wings practiced at Little Caesars Arena’s BELFOR Training Center on Wednesday morning before departing for Edmonton. Patrick Kane (upper body) and Vladimir Tarasenko (illness) both participated, but J.T. Compher (upper body) and Jeff Petry (undisclosed) did not.

Per McLellan, he doesn’t expect Kane to play on Thursday but expects Tarasenko to return to the lineup. Compher will travel with the team on this road trip, while Petry will not.

Tied with the Vegas Golden Knights for first in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division at 67 points apiece, the Oilers most recently defeated the Kraken, 4-2, on Monday.

Captain Connor McDavid, who scored a goal in his return from a three-game suspension on Monday, leads the defending Western Conference champions in assists (45) and is second in goals (21) and points (66) behind Leon Draisaitl (35-40—75) this season. In 33 games, netminder Stuart Skinner has a 19-11-3 record with a 2.69 goals-against average and a pair of shutouts.

“I had the luxury of coaching them,” McLellan said about McDavid and Draisaitl. “The two of them are elite separately and super elite together. They play a completely different game. One is fast, one slows it down with passing and vision.”

Seider said the best way to defend against Edmonton’s star power is to do so as a five-man unit.

“Really focusing on keeping them to the outside, eliminating chances from the inner slot and try to eliminate extended D-zone shifts,” Seider said. “I think the more we have the puck, the better we’ll be and the more offense we’ll play.”

The Detroit Red Wings are set to kick off the Western Canada leg of their four-game road trip as they face off against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. After a tough loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Red Wings will be looking to bounce back and secure a much-needed win.

Edmonton has been playing well as of late, with star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way. The Red Wings will need to bring their A-game if they hope to come out on top against this tough opponent.

Stay tuned for updates and highlights from the game as the Red Wings look to make a statement in Edmonton. Let’s go Red Wings! #LGRW #DetroitRedWings #NHL #EdmontonOilers #WesternCanadaTrip

  • Immigration issue keeping top new Edmonton Oilers d-man out of the line-up

Game Day 50: Oilers vs Kraken

    Article content

    Article content

This in from TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, news that an immigration issue is keeping John Klingberg out of the Edmonton Oilers line-up, with Klingberg, Stuart Skinner and Darnell Nurse all missing practice today.

Said Rishaug: “Skinner on baby watch with his wife, (best wishes to them!). Pickard starts tonight. Nurse under the weather, expected to be available tonight according to Knoblauch. Klingberg away working on some immigration stuff. Could play later this week or on the road next week.”

    Advertisement 2

    Article content

Coach Kris Knoblauch told the media that Klingberg could play this week. “We have two more practice days before we play this Thursday. We’ll see how those two go, but rough estimate was sometime this week, and if we have to push it back to the following week when we’re going on the road, playing back to back, maybe that’s the time that he plays also.”

As for the lines for tonight’s game against Seattle, Bob Stauffer of the Oilers radio network reported:

    Draisaitl-McDavid-Hyman
    Podkolzin-Henrique-Arvidsson
    Janmark-RNH-Brown
    Perry-Philp-Kapanen
    J. Skinner

    Ekholm-Bouchard
    Kulak-Emberson
    Regula-Stecher

    Pickard

    My take

    1. That is an interesting second line. It’s Game 50 and so far those three players, Adam Henrique, Viktor Arvidsson and Vasili Podkolzon, have all been regular Oilers forwards but they’ve played together as a trio a grand total of 9:22. So we’ll see.

Arvidsson and Podkolzin are used to working off of and with the puck carrying and passing machine Leon Draisaitl. Henrique is more of a straight line and cycle-the-puck kind of forward, so it will be interesting to see who carries the puck through the neutral zone here.

    2. This is the first time we’ve heard that immigration issues have popped up for John Klingberg, a rare occurrence for an NHL player but not unheard of. One would hope that it’s resolved rapidly, though as someone who recently waited nine weeks for his passport renewal to come in the mail, I’m not brimming with confidence about the system. It’s almost certainly just a hiccup, but it does sound like it’s delayed the timeline of Klingberg’s debut with the Oilers.

To be fair, the issue could be at Klingberg’s end, but given the slow working of government, I tend not to give it the benefit of the doubt.

    3. The hottest Oilers in terms of his two-way play trending up this past month has been Ty Emberson. He’s showing excellent positional play and strong reads on defence, but it’s on the attack where he’s really picked it up, making more rushes, getting off more shots and moving the puck better. He’s starting to use his sneaky speed to great advantage. He’s playing at a high level, perhaps enough to earn a promotion into the Top 4. Of course, succeeding as a Top 4 d-man as compared to a bottom-pairing d-man is an entirely different matter. But perhaps Emberson is ready for the opportunity.

    4. I like to see Edmonton load up its top line for the return of McDavid. McD will want to rev it up fast, so could to have some wingers who can burn rubber as well.

    5. Derek Ryan is now in Bakersfield, which is no surprise given that he’s got to stay fresh and active if he’s going to maybe help the Oilers in the months to come and the 2025 playoff campaign.

The Edmonton Oilers are facing a major setback as their top new defenseman is being kept out of the line-up due to immigration issues. This is a huge blow to the team as they were counting on him to make a big impact on the blue line.

The player, who has not been named, is currently unable to join the team due to delays in processing his immigration paperwork. This has left the Oilers scrambling to find a replacement and has left fans wondering when they will see their new d-man in action.

The team is working tirelessly to resolve the issue and get their player cleared to play as soon as possible. In the meantime, they are making adjustments to their line-up and hoping for a speedy resolution to this frustrating situation.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Oilers work to get their top defenseman back on the ice where he belongs.

  • Edmonton Oilers vs Vancouver Canucks Prediction, Odds and Picks

The Edmonton Oilers head to Vancouver to battle the Canucks for the second time this season. The Oilers roughed up the Canucks 7-3 as moderate favorites (-122), winning for the third straight time in the series. The previous 2 victories were to cap off their epic 7-game playoff series. Edmonton has won 4 consecutive games, outscoring the opposition 14-9 in the span. The Oilers have also picked up 8 wins in the past 9 games while going 19-4-1 in the past 24. That’s 39 out of a possible 48 points in that span dating back to Nov. 9, which started with a 7-3 win in Vancouver.

The Canucks are skidding pretty hard, falling 5-1 to the Los Angeles Kings at home on Thursday. Vancouver is on a 1-4-2 slide in the past 7 games while going just 3-6-5 in the past 14 outing and posting 11 out of a possible 28 points. Stuart Skinner is 18-9-3 with a 2.69 GAA and .902 SV% in addition 2 shutouts. Vancouver’s offense isn’t likely to solve its offensive issues against the red-hot goaltender.

Oilers vs Canucks prediction: Edmonton 3-way ML (-115) available at time of publishing. Playable to -130.

The Edmonton Oilers are set to face off against the Vancouver Canucks in an exciting matchup on the ice. Both teams have been playing well lately, making this game a must-watch for hockey fans.

In terms of predictions, the Oilers have been on a hot streak recently and have been playing some of their best hockey of the season. With star players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the charge, they have a strong chance of coming out on top in this game.

On the other hand, the Canucks have also been playing well and have been getting contributions from their top players like Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser. They will be looking to make a statement against a tough Oilers team and could potentially pull off an upset.

In terms of odds, the Oilers are favored to win this game with a slight edge over the Canucks. However, in hockey, anything can happen so it’s always important to keep an eye on the game and see how things unfold.

As for picks, I would lean towards the Oilers in this matchup. They have been playing with a lot of confidence and have a lot of firepower on offense. However, the Canucks are a talented team and could definitely give the Oilers a run for their money.

Overall, this game is shaping up to be a competitive and entertaining matchup between two skilled teams. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the end. Let’s sit back, relax, and enjoy some great hockey action between the Oilers and Canucks.

  • Edmonton Oilers do it again! Team signs big name d-man John Klingberg

    Article content

This in from Darren Dreger of TSN: “John Klingberg heading to the Oilers.”

    Article content

    Klingberg

    My take

    1. At the right price, in the $1 million range (and we still don’t have any contract details yet), the puck-moving Klingberg could be a win-win, with Klingberg slotting in next to Darnell Nurse on the second pairing, providing a steady puck-mover to complement Nurse’s speed and aggression. This would boost Edmonton’s chances of winning the Cup, not to mention Klingberg’s value as a free agent this summer.

    Article content

    2. Klingberg had hip resurfacing surgery in 2023 and has worked hard to get to this point. The Swedish d-man played just 14 games last year due to his injury and surgery. Toronto had signed him to a one-year $4.15 million contract, but the Leafs got little value from that deal.

Before his season was shut down for good in November 2023, Klingberg sat out games in Toronto. Luke Fox of Sportsnet wrote at the time: “He’s in the mud, the analytics and eye test are his twin enemies, and he has swiftly become the fan base’s whipping boy.”

    3. Signing Klingberg does not limit the Oilers to just one move. They could also bring in a big, physical d-man at the March 7 trade deadline if that was still deemed to be a need. Edmonton can now test drive Klingberg for a month to see how he plays before having to make the call.

    4. Before injury slowed him, Klingberg was a top-pairing, puck-moving right shot d-man with great offence and OK defence. He’s still just 32, and d-men who can skate as well as Klingberg has in the past often have solid years from ages 32 to 36 or so. At the same time, Klingberg’s injury history may limit his ability, even with surgery and rehab. Even before this recent procedure, he’d had two surgeries on his hip earlier in his career.

    Article content

    5. Edmonton has become a home to big name signings. The Oilers made such a move in 2022, signing Evander Kane when San Jose had had enough of him, with Kane becoming a key Oilers performer, especially in the playoffs.

Edmonton did it again in 2024, signing up veteran grinder Corey Perry when Chicago was fed up with him, with Perry playing decent two-way hockey for the Oil when healthy. Now there’s Klingberg coming to E-town. It’s an interesting experiment, though still hard to assess, not knowing contract details yet.

    6. On X, my Cult colleague Bruce McCurdy notes that Klingberg had played with five Oilers previously: Mattias Janmark, 4 years in Dallas, Adam Henrique, 1 year in Anaheim, Mattias Ekholm, 3 separate World Men’s Hockey Championships, Viktor Arvidsson for Skelleftea in Sweden 2011-13 and with Corey Perry in Dallas in 2020.

    6. Former Cult of Hockey writer Jonathan Willis had this to say on X: “The last time John Klingberg played an NHL season and finished above 50% by both GF% and xGF% was 2018-19. He’s now 32 and coming off hip surgery. If you’re counting on him to be a 3rd pair offensive specialist, that seems plausible. Don’t expect more, and be ready for less.”

P.S. In 2022, Klingberg reportedly turned down a big money offer in Dallas. All water under the bridge now…

Share this article in your social network

The Edmonton Oilers have done it again! The team has made a huge splash in the offseason by signing star defenseman John Klingberg to a contract. Klingberg, who previously played for the Dallas Stars, brings a wealth of talent and experience to the Oilers’ blue line.

With Klingberg on board, the Oilers now boast one of the most formidable defensive units in the league. His ability to move the puck, quarterback the power play, and shut down opposing forwards will be invaluable to the team as they look to make a deep playoff run.

Fans are buzzing with excitement over the signing, and many are already predicting big things for the Oilers this season. With Klingberg in the fold, the sky’s the limit for Edmonton as they aim to bring a Stanley Cup back to Oil Country.

The Colorado Avalanche are back in action tonight to square off against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. After a come from behind victory against the New York Rangers on Tuesday, the Avs had clinched the result they were after but were not happy with how they played – with Head Coach Jared Bednar citing their performance as “unimpressive.”
