Kevin Durant + Anthony Edwards? Inside Timberwolves’ NBA trade deadline what-if scenario
Tim Connelly has built a reputation for being a risk-taker since taking over as the Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations three years ago. He has swung major trades for Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley and traded Karl-Anthony Towns to New York just before training camp opened last fall.
As the clock ticked down on the NBA’s trade deadline on Thursday, Connelly was looking for ways to pull off his biggest deal yet. The Phoenix Suns had been entertaining trades for Kevin Durant over the previous few days with a possible reunion with the Golden State Warriors among the considerations.
Connelly and the Timberwolves explored getting into the Durant sweepstakes to unite him with his Olympic pal, Anthony Edwards, team sources told The Athletic. Timberwolves sources believed Durant would have been open to coming to Minnesota.
Nothing came close to fruition, team sources said, though there was a swell of hope as the day wore on. As a second apron team, the Wolves would have had to pull off a series of maneuvers and part with a significant number of players to pull the deal off. In the end, there were too many hoops to jump through for it to be feasible, team sources said.
Still, it’s a juicy little what-if, first reported by Chris Haynes, that would have been a major headline-grabber during one of the busiest trade deadlines the league has ever seen.
“Batman and Robin,” one team source mused.

Who were the biggest winners of an unprecedented NBA trade deadline?
After making the Western Conference finals last season, the Timberwolves have been languishing near Play-In territory all season long. The trade of Towns for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and a first-round pick, while helping provide some much-needed financial flexibility to build around Edwards for the long term, has not been as productive as the Wolves had hoped in the short term.
They are currently 28-23 and seventh in the West, just 2½ games ahead of the 11th-place Warriors, who added Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline. Their historically good defense of a season ago has slipped to sixth this season, and the offense, while better than last season, is still at 14th.
Randle has been a solid addition, but his fit with Rudy Gobert in the frontcourt has not been as easy as was the pairing of Towns and Gobert. Randle also is out for the next few weeks because of a strained groin. DiVincenzo started slow but picked things up when he joined the starting lineup in January, only to go down with a painful turf toe injury that will keep him out for several more weeks.
Edwards has had another All-Star season, but he has struggled at times to acclimate to a new roster configuration that doesn’t have the same spacing Towns provided.
On the other side, the Suns have languished with a core of Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. They are 25-25 and 10th in the West, nowhere near the contender that aggressive owner Mat Ishbia expected when he greenlit the trades to bring Durant and Beal to Phoenix.
But as of early Monday, the prospect of Durant being on the move did not appear to be in play. If there was a high-profile Suns veteran who was going to be traded, it was the former All-Star Beal (if he’d waive his no-trade clause) in a deal for Miami’s Jimmy Butler. All signs pointed to Durant staying put with the Suns hoping to form a Durant-Devin Booker-Butler trio that would revive their championship hopes.
Then came a report about the possibility of a Durant-Golden State reunion, followed by a steady stream of league-wide chatter that the Warriors weren’t alone in the pursuit. The Suns, who had realized trading Durant might be the only way to land Butler, were pushing hard to find a way. League sources say there were multiple structures in play, including a three-team deal between the Warriors, Heat and Suns, and a simpler deal between Golden State and Phoenix.
As of Tuesday night, league sources say the Warriors were in the lead for Durant’s services.
Except for one thing: As they would finally come to accept on Wednesday morning, Durant didn’t want to be there.

NBA trade deadline: Grading all the big deals of 2024-25 trade season
The Warriors, who won two titles with Durant during their three seasons together, were already aware he might be lukewarm about the prospect of reuniting. Around that same time, league sources said, the Warriors started to fear that longtime Heat president Pat Riley was making a last-minute push to land Durant himself rather than see him join the Warriors.
That development, coupled with Durant’s impossible-to-ignore pushback, was enough to cause a sudden shift in Golden State’s strategy. The Warriors pivoted to the Butler pursuit (that would land him in the Bay that night), and Durant remained in play. Enter the Timberwolves.
There is deep respect between Edwards and Durant. Edwards has long gushed publicly over his appreciation of Durant, a rarity from a young player whose bravado normally keeps him from giving his peers too much love.
Durant smiled as Edwards took it to the Suns in a first-round sweep last season, seeing a younger version of himself in the competitive but also joyful Edwards.
The Wolves kicked around many ideas on how to make a trade of that magnitude happen, but it would have eradicated almost all of the depth on the roster. As a second-apron team, the Wolves were not able to aggregate salaries in a two-team trade, so they would have had to execute several trades to get them in position to land Durant. But the gymnastics were just too much and would have cost the Wolves too many players, to pull off.
The Wolves looked at several other scenarios involving trades for other players, team sources said, but didn’t see anything that helped them. Wolves fans have been clamoring for Randle to move, but the team remains high on his contributions and did not see a move out there that would have improved their team for the stretch run.
“I’m at peace,” coach Chris Finch said Thursday night before the Wolves played the Houston Rockets. “There was never this great momentum within the organization to shake it up or do anything.”
Despite some dispiriting losses at home to Sacramento and Washington, the Wolves are hopeful that, once they get Randle and DiVincenzo back healthy, they can make a run. Since Dec. 1, they are 19-13 with the fourth-best defense and 10th-best offense. They are seventh in net rating in that span.
“Since the middle of December, I think we feel like we can point to the team we can still become, and we’ve seen glimpses of that,” Finch said. “That gives us great encouragement and hope.”
The chaos of these past few days sets the stage for another Summer of Durant. The mere fact that the Suns considered trading him and that the revelation was made public, has led to a league-wide belief that the Suns will be forced to revisit this sensitive situation at season’s end. Durant, who has one year left on his contract worth $54.7 million, bypassed a one-year, $60 million extension before this season and is eligible for a two-year, $120 million extension this summer.
Ant will be watching.

The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching and the Minnesota Timberwolves are rumored to be considering a blockbuster move that could shake up the league. The Timberwolves are reportedly exploring the possibility of trading for Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant, pairing him with their rising young star Anthony Edwards. The potential of Durant and Edwards teaming up in Minnesota has sent shockwaves throughout the NBA, as the duo would instantly become one of the most formidable tandems in the league. Durant, a two-time NBA champion and former MVP, is widely regarded as one of the best players in the game, while Edwards, the number one overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has shown immense potential in his young career.
The Timberwolves would likely have to part ways with some key pieces in order to acquire Durant, but the potential payoff could be huge. Pairing Durant with Edwards would give the Timberwolves a dynamic scoring duo that could compete with any team in the league.
Of course, this is all just speculation at this point, but the idea of Durant and Edwards teaming up in Minnesota is certainly an intriguing one. As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Timberwolves to see if they pull off the blockbuster move that could change the course of their franchise. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Their lead didn’t last, not after the Wolves finished off the first quarter with a 9-0 run of their own, led by the energy — and playmaking — provided by new supersubs Rob Dillingham and Jaylen Clark.
That brought them within 27-26 at quarter’s end before …
The Wizards countered by punching back, building back a quick 38-31 fueled by more three-pointers. They led 50-43 midway through the second quarter before the Wolves, with Ingles on the floor, answered back to pull within 52-50 with less than 2 ½ minutes left before halftime.
When the Wolves took a very brief 57-56 lead with 56 seconds before halftime, the Wizards’ Bilal Coulibaly drew two free throws and made both with 7.7 seconds left for a 58-57 halftime lead.
In a disappointing turn of events, the Minnesota Timberwolves fell short against the Washington Wizards as rookie sensation Anthony Edwards was sidelined due to illness. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Timberwolves were unable to secure a victory, ultimately succumbing to a 115-107 defeat. The absence of Edwards, who has been a key contributor for the Timberwolves this season, was sorely felt as the team struggled to find their rhythm on both ends of the court. Without his scoring prowess and energy on the floor, the Timberwolves were unable to keep pace with the Wizards, who took advantage of their depleted roster.
While it was a tough loss for the Timberwolves, they will need to regroup and bounce back quickly as they look to make a push for the playoffs. With Edwards expected to return to action soon, the team will be hoping to get back on track and continue their pursuit of a postseason berth.
Despite this setback, the Timberwolves remain a team on the rise, with a promising young core led by Edwards. Fans can expect to see more exciting performances from this talented squad as they look to make their mark in the competitive Western Conference.

Anthony Edwards added to Timberwolves injury report with illness
There’s a bug making its way through the Minnesota Timberwolves locker room and it has apparently invaded Anthony Edwards’ immune system as he’s been added with a questionable status for Saturday’s game against the woeful Washington Wizards.
Edwards joins Mike Conley (sprained thumb) and Terrence Shannon Jr. (foot) on the injury report with questionable tags, while Julius Randle (groin strain) and Donte DiVincenzo (big toe sprain) are also ruled out for the game.
UPDATED Minnesota @Timberwolves Status Report in advance of tonight’s game vs. Washington:

Before Minnesota’s game Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns, both Rob Dillingham and Naz Reid played after being listed as questionable with an illness.
The Wizards have dropped 16 consecutive games for a second time this season and they have not won since beating the Bulls on New Year’s Day.
If Edwards and Conley are ruled out, the Timberwolves might be rolling with a starting lineup featuring Dillingham, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid and Rudy Gobert.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have announced that star rookie Anthony Edwards has been added to the team’s injury report due to an illness. This news comes as a blow to the Timberwolves, who are already dealing with injuries to key players such as Karl-Anthony Towns.Edwards, the number one overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has been a bright spot for the struggling Timberwolves this season. His scoring ability and athleticism have provided a spark for the team, and his absence will surely be felt on the court.
It is unclear how long Edwards will be out due to this illness, but the Timberwolves will need to find a way to adjust in his absence. With the team currently near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, every game is crucial as they look to turn their season around.
We wish Anthony Edwards a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Timberwolves will need to rally together and find a way to compete without one of their key players.

#SunsTimberwolves #updates #Phoenix #stay #hot #Anthony #Edwards #MinnesotaSixers Rumors: Yabusele, Gordon, Embiid, George, Edwards
The Sixers‘ minimum-salary investment in Guerschon Yabusele has paid off in a big way this season, with the big man playing a regular role in Philadelphia and submitting strong numbers, including 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game with a .394 3PT%. The 76ers “love” the Frenchman, Marc Stein writes at his Substack.
However, as Adam Aaronson and Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype outline for PhillyVoice.com, retaining Yabusele beyond this season might not be easy. The Sixers will only hold his Non-Bird rights, which will prevent them from offering more than 20% above his minimum salary unless use another cap exception. Philadelphia should have the taxpayer mid-level exception available, but even if that’s enough to re-sign Yabusele, it would mean not being able to use the MLE to bring in additional help.
With that in mind, the Sixers may to make a difficult decision on Yabusele at this year’s deadline, according to Stein, who reports that multiple playoff teams have submitted trade offers for the 29-year-old. Given that Philadelphia is just 17-27, is well above the tax line, and isn’t assured of hanging onto Yabusele beyond this season, entertaining those offers might be in the team’s best interest.
Veteran swingman Eric Gordon, who has made 49.2% of his three-point attempts in his last 14 outings since returning from oral surgery, has also generated trade interest, Stein writes, adding that the 76ers want to see how the next week-plus plays out before making any final decisions about their trade deadline plans.
Here’s more on the Sixers:
- Joel Embiid‘s swollen left knee has responded well to treatment and he was partial participant in practice on Monday, per Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports (Twitter links). However, the former MVP has been ruled out for Tuesday’s game vs. the Lakers as well as Wednesday’s vs. the Kings, according to the team.
- Paul George, who underwent an MRI on his injured finger on Sunday, didn’t practice on Monday and won’t play on Tuesday, Neubeck adds. The club is still reviewing the results of the forward’s MRI.
- John Hollinger of The Athletic takes stock of the Sixers’ current situation, explaining why tanking this season to try to protect their top-six protected 2025 first-rounder doesn’t make much sense, given how close they are to a play-in spot and the head-start that the NBA’s other tanking teams have gotten. Hollinger could see Philadelphia either buying or selling at the deadline, given the club’s tradable draft assets still on hand and its position relative to the tax line.
- Within the same story, Hollinger highlights Sixers two-way player Justin Edwards, writing that the rookie has shown he’s capable of being a solid NBA role player. “I feel like a broken record, but he just seems to always be in the right place on offense,” head coach Nick Nurse said of Edwards on Friday. “He’s got a few levels, he can go all the way to the rim, he’s got enough of a pull-up if there’s too much traffic there, and he’s got a decent sense (of when) to (kick) it out.”
With the NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Philadelphia 76ers have been at the center of numerous rumors swirling around the league. Here are the latest rumblings surrounding the Sixers:1. Guerschon Yabusele: The Sixers have reportedly shown interest in trading for the 6’8″ forward from the Real Madrid in the EuroLeague. Yabusele, a former first-round pick of the Boston Celtics, could provide some much-needed depth and versatility to the Sixers’ frontcourt.
2. Aaron Gordon: There have been whispers that the Sixers are exploring a potential trade for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon. The high-flying forward would give the Sixers another athletic wing player who can score and defend at a high level.
3. Joel Embiid: Despite some speculation that the Sixers could look to trade Joel Embiid, team officials have stated that they have no intention of moving their All-Star center. Embiid remains a focal point of the team’s future plans.
4. Paul George: There have been murmurs that the Sixers could make a play for Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George. Adding George to a lineup that already features Embiid and Ben Simmons could make the Sixers legitimate title contenders.
5. Carsen Edwards: The Sixers have been linked to Boston Celtics guard Carsen Edwards in trade talks. The sharpshooting guard could provide a scoring punch off the bench for Philadelphia.
As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see how these rumors play out and if the Sixers make any significant moves to bolster their roster for a playoff push. Stay tuned for updates on these and other Sixers rumors.

South Carolina forward Joyce Edwards was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, and senior guard Bree Hall showed her support. The Gamecocks shared the news on their Instagram account, and Hall posted it to her story and wrote:
“Go Joycieeee .”
Bree Hall’s reaction to Edwards (Credits: Instagram/@breezyhall) Joyce Edwards is enjoying her best freshman season, averaging 12.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists. She shoots 56.6 from the floor but has yet to make a shot from the 3-point range. She attempted just once in November against Coppin State and didn’t make it.
South Carolina is defending its 2024 national championship win, and Edwards is turning out to be a key piece. After her career-high 21-point performance on Thursday against Alabama, Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley praised the forward.
“Joyce is special,” Staley said. “She works really hard at it. She doesn’t take plays off. She might not be ready for some plays — they got her in the fourth quarter. But she’s a relentless worker. She’s a tireless worker. She wants to be great at everything that she does.
“To see her play as consistently and efficiently over the past couple of games, it’s saying that she’s found her footing. I think she understands what we lost and what she needs to do to help close that gap.”
Dawn Staley shares her thoughts on Joyce Edwards’ work ethic
With the loss of Kamilla Cardoso to the WNBA, Joyce Edwards came into South Carolina with expectations to fill the center’s big shoes. Cardoso played a crucial role in the Gamecocks’ two championship runs and was their biggest asset around the glass.
With the pressure, Edwards has been putting the work in. But according to Dawn Staley, she seems to be doing it a bit too much.
“She works out before practice. She works out after practice, and I know she’s in there with her dad in between,” Staley said. “That’s just who she is. I want her to not be in the gym so much, but that’s her makeup.
“You have to take care of your body because the pace that she works out and practices, it’s hard during the season. It’s really hard. I don’t think she really knows what a college season feels like.”
Staley added that she has had a conversation with Edwards about pacing herself as the season is only halfway through, and she has a tough postseason stretch in March.

Vince Carter raves about Anthony Edwards, says he needs to make one change, ‘not a huge fan of…’
Anthony Edwards is a bonafide superstar, though there might be one issue with his game.
Without Anthony Edwards, the Minnesota Timberwolves would be a rebuilding squad. He is essential to any level of success, even with his co-star Karl-Anthony Towns now sporting a New York Knicks jersey.
Edwards is now alone at the helm of the Mavericks, as Julius Randle hasn’t been at the level of a co-star that Towns was a season ago.
The Georgia product hasn’t had as easy of a time scoring the basketball with Towns being traded and less spacing on the floor, though his ability hasn’t changed and he’s still a superstar.
Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images What Vince Carter doesn’t like about Anthony Edwards’ game
Edwards was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft for a reason. He’s a supreme talent in the NBA and is capable of leading a franchise to eventually being a contender — as he did for the Timberwolves a season ago.
With a change in talent on the roster and having less floor spacing and 3-pointer shooters around him, he’s had to adapt his scoring approach and he’s begun shooting 3-pointers himself with more volume.
According to Hall of Fame NBA player Vince Carter, Edwards has started to “settle” for the outside shot rather than playing to his strengths, and he’s not a fan of it, as he revealed on “The Hoop Collective.”
“There’s a lot of guys I watch, I love Anthony Edwards, the way he plays,” Carter said. “I’m not a huge fan now of the scorer he is, settling for the three. I think he has so much to offer and he can still shoot the three, but he can settle it up by his ability to get to the basket when he wants.”
Edwards is incredibly athletic and is talented with the ball in his hands. With that, he thrives at using his ability to get to the rim and make plays close to the basket.
Why Edwards can’t play to his strength with the Timberwolves
When a club gets a superb talent like Edwards, they’ve got to construct their roster with that player’s strengths in mind. The former No. 1 overall pick is an engine to an offense. He needs secondary playmakers and 3-point shooters around him, capable of allowing him the space on the floor needed to get to the rim efficiently.
By trading Towns — who was the perfect co-star and floor spacer — for Randle, who takes the ball out of Edwards’ hands and doesn’t space the floor, the Timberwolves jeopardized the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.
In an ideal world, Edwards is getting to the rim with volume, occasionally shooting 3-point shots and playing to his strengths. He can’t do that with the current roster construction, forcing him into shooting 3-pointers with more volume.
Minnesota might have to seriously consider even more roster and lineup changes to prioritize their superstar player and keep him happy and productive on the floor.

Vince Carter raves about Anthony Edwards, says he needs to make one change, ‘not a huge fan of…’Former NBA superstar Vince Carter recently praised Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Anthony Edwards, calling him a “special talent” with unlimited potential. However, Carter believes there is one area where Edwards could improve.
In a recent interview, Carter expressed his admiration for Edwards’ athleticism, scoring ability, and overall skill set. He noted that the young guard has the makings of a future star in the league.
But Carter also pointed out that there is one aspect of Edwards’ game that he is not a huge fan of: his shot selection. The former Slam Dunk Contest champion believes that Edwards needs to be more selective with his shots and not settle for difficult or contested looks.
Carter emphasized the importance of shot selection in the NBA, especially for a young player like Edwards who is still developing his game. He encouraged Edwards to be more patient and work on taking better, higher percentage shots.
Overall, Carter remains optimistic about Edwards’ future in the league and believes that with some adjustments, he can reach his full potential and become a dominant force in the NBA. It will be interesting to see how Edwards responds to this advice and continues to grow as a player.

#Vince #Carter #raves #Anthony #Edwards #change #huge #fan #of..Will Timberwolves elevate unproven guard to starter in hopes of easing Anthony Edwards’ frustrations?
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been searching for offensive scoring help all season. Anthony Edwards has been playing out of his mind, but defenses are starting to key in on him.
Coach Chris Finch has been incorporating different lineups and rotations to try and provide an internal spark for the team on offense.
One bright spot as of late has been the impressive play from rookie point guard Rob Dillingham. In the past three games, he is averaging 10 points on 56 percent shooting. More importantly, in the last game against the Memphis Grizzlies he had a fantastic showing. He finished with a +16 in a losing effort for the Wolves in just 17 minutes on the floor.
With Mike Conley’s lingering injuries this season, it has clearly affected his play. Because Finch is trying new lineups, perhaps it is time to put Dillingham in the starting lineup and have the veteran Conley come off the bench with the second unit.
The only reason Conley is starting is because of Donte DiVincenzo‘s toe injury that will sideline him indefinitely.
“Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo is out indefinitely due to left big toe injury and will receive additional opinion, sources tell ESPN. DiVincenzo’s foot has been placed in a boot. He was averaging 17.5 points, 4.7 assists, 42% shooting on 3s as a starter in last 6 games,” ESPN’s Shams Charania posted.
This is the perfect time to give the Dillingham a shot in the starting lineup and initiate some new energy into the group. There is no set timetable on how long DiVincenzo will be out. In addition to that, the +/- stats have proven that the team plays better with him on the floor. He has earned the opportunity to not only start, but to play more minutes as well.

Rookie guard Anthony Edwards, the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has expressed frustration with his role on the team and his lack of playing time. With Edwards eager to prove himself and make an impact, the Timberwolves may be considering promoting an unproven guard to the starting lineup in order to appease their young star. One potential candidate for this promotion is rookie guard Jaden McDaniels, who has shown flashes of potential in limited minutes this season. McDaniels, a versatile defender with a smooth shooting stroke, could provide the scoring punch and defensive intensity that the Timberwolves need to compete in the tough Western Conference.
By elevating McDaniels to a starting role, the Timberwolves would not only be addressing Edwards’ concerns but also giving themselves a chance to evaluate their young talent and potentially unlock a new dimension to their lineup. However, this move comes with its own set of risks, as McDaniels may not be ready for the increased minutes and responsibilities that come with being a starter in the NBA.
Only time will tell if the Timberwolves decide to make this bold move, but one thing is for certain – they need to find a solution to ease Edwards’ frustrations and help him reach his full potential.
