  • You Probably Didn’t Notice That ‘Final Destination’ Movies Are Stuffed With Classic Horror Easter Eggs

Final Destination is a love letter to the horror genre, and it really feels like a tribute to everything that came before it. From the cameo appearances, to soundtrack choices, it is a movie franchise that lends itself to being rewatched, as fans are able to pick up new connections every time. However, some Easter Eggs are not so easy to spot, with one requiring impeccable hearing and an extensive knowledge of classic horror. Don’t fear though, we’re here to explain how the character names of those who got off Flight 180 pay homage to the genre.

Characters in ‘Final Destination’ are Named After Horror Icons

If the names of the characters in Final Destination sound familiar, it is because many of them are named after famous horror directors, actors and producers. The first person to have a premonition is the franchise, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), and his best friend Tod Waggner (Chad E. Donella) were both named after Tod Browning, the director of Freaks and a frequent collaborator of Lon Chaney, whose name provided the inspiration for Terry Chaney (Amanda Detmer). Tod’s surname was inspired by the Universal producer George Waggner, most notable for directing The Wolf Man. Fellow student and joker Billy Hitchcock (Seann William Scott) is named after the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock.

However, it is not just the protagonists where these Easter eggs can be found — even the secondary characters have hidden references in their names. The students’ teacher who gets back on Flight 180 is Larry Murnau, named after F.W. Murnau who directed the original Nosferatu. The detectives of the case are named Agent Schrek, after Max Schrek who originated the role of Count Orlok in Nosferatu, and Agent Weine, after Robert Wiene, the director of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Even the two girls Tod and Alex speak to at the beginning have famous eponyms. Blake Dreyer is named after Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer and Crista Marsh takes her surname from Fredric March, who won an Oscar for his performance in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

This Character’s Name in ‘Final Destination’ Has A Hidden Meaning

Kristen Cloke as Valerie Lewton in Final Destination (2000)
    Image via New Line Cinema

The most meaningful name in Final Destination is Valerie Lewton (Kristen Cloke), who is named after producer Val Lewton. Lewton made numerous low budget horror movies, but his most famous is Cat People, with one scene in particular being so iconic that it led to the development of a whole new technique. The movie purposefully builds tension and prepares the audience for a scare only for a bus to drive past. This jump scare technique became known as The Lewton Bus, and refers specifically to jumpscares where the payoff is something harmless. Nowadays, this form of jump-scare is seen all over the horror genre, but Val Lewton is credited with creating it.

The Lewton Bus is connected to Final Destination in two different capacities. The first, and most obvious, is that Terry Chaney is literally hit by a bus, subverting the technique, so the innocuous object from Cat People becomes deadly. The second follows the structure of the movies as a whole. The Final Destination franchise has become synonymous with its painstakingly drawn out death sequences, with characters living in the limbo of near-misses. Valerie Lewton’s death within the franchise is one of the most gruesome examples of this, and it still remains one of Final Destination’s most drawn out, cruel deaths.

The movies have these excessive build-ups that create such an extreme amount of tension, and they are filled with fake-outs. The camera will pan to water flowing over a cable, or a loose light fitting, bombarding the audience with potentially deadly situations. However, the character will avoid them all only for a last minute surprise to cause their death. This also pays homage to The Lewton Bus by constantly amping up the pressure, only to have a painless fake-out, and Final Destination uses this formula again and again to add to the shock of the final blow. The Final Destination universe is peppered with fragments of Lewton’s Bus, and it is just one of the many ways the franchise pays homage to classic horror. The names of the characters are a fun hidden detail within the franchise and are part of the reason a franchise with such a simple concept is still in demand, with Final Destination: Bloodlines on the way this year.

If you’re a fan of horror movies, chances are you’ve seen the ‘Final Destination’ franchise at least once. But did you know that these movies are actually filled with classic horror Easter eggs that you probably didn’t notice?

From references to iconic horror films like ‘Psycho’ and ‘The Shining’ to subtle nods to horror directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Wes Craven, the ‘Final Destination’ movies are packed with hidden gems for eagle-eyed viewers to spot.

For example, in ‘Final Destination 2,’ there is a scene where a character is hoisted up by hooks in a way that is reminiscent of a similar scene in ‘Hellraiser.’ And in ‘Final Destination 5,’ there is a subtle reference to the infamous shower scene in ‘Psycho.’

So next time you watch a ‘Final Destination’ movie, keep an eye out for these classic horror Easter eggs. You never know what you might find lurking in the shadows.

  • Eggs recalled in multiple provinces over salmonella concerns

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a recall due to a possible salmonella contamination of certain brands of eggs in multiple provinces.

The agency says the recall covers Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, no name and Western Family eggs. The expiry dates for recalled eggs are Feb. 16, Feb. 22 and March 1.

British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba are affected by the recall, and “possibly other provinces and territories.” The agency initially included Alberta and Saskatchewan, but they’ve since been removed from the recall notice.

The notice says consumers should not consume, use, serve or distribute the recalled products and are advised to throw the eggs away or contact the retailer that sold them.

The agency says food affected with salmonella might not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick.

For healthy people, short-term salmonella symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, while the infection can be more serious or fatal for young children, pregnant women, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

Attention all egg consumers! Eggs have been recalled in multiple provinces due to potential salmonella contamination. It is important to check the packaging of your eggs and discard any products that may be affected.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious illness, including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It is especially dangerous for young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

If you have purchased eggs that are part of the recall, do not consume them. Instead, return them to the store where you purchased them or dispose of them properly.

It is always important to handle and cook eggs properly to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Make sure to wash your hands before and after handling eggs, cook them thoroughly, and refrigerate them promptly.

Stay safe and informed, and share this information with friends and family to prevent any potential health risks. Let’s all work together to keep our communities healthy and safe.

  • Is bird flu driving up the cost of eggs in New Orleans? | News

Customers in Louisiana and nationwide are dealing with egg prices going up and sparsely populated aisles at the grocery store following the spread of the bird flu in the U.S.

The risk of bird flu, or H5N1, hit home for Louisiana after a patient here was the first human death from the virus in the U.S., the state Department of Health said Jan. 6. The patient contracted avian influenza after exposure to a noncommercial backyard flock of birds and wild birds.

Across the country, hundreds have taken to social media to share videos where the popular ingredient and breakfast staple was in short supply at major retailers, ABC reports.

The Jan 10. U.S. Department of Agriculture market data report found that egg prices are up nearly 38% nationally in the past year and prices spiked 8% in November alone during the holiday season.

The average price for a carton of a dozen eggs cost people $3.65, according to the USDA data, compared with $2.14 a year ago. Prices were cheapest in the South at an average of $3.40 per carton and most expensive on the West Coast at $4.20 per carton.

While Louisiana has not experienced cases of bird flu among its commercial chicken populations, the price of eggs rose due to a diminished number of table egg-laying birds in states and regions that ship eggs to Louisiana such as California and the Midwest, said William Strickland, an agriculture and natural resources extension agent with LSU’s AgCenter.

In Northwest Louisiana, Stickland said he personally saw the rise in egg prices at stores.

“I actually took a picture right when I came back from winter break that eggs were over five dollars at the store I was at for a dozen,” Strickland said.

Bird flu had impacted egg prices in the past like two years ago when a then-price surge left consumers and New Orleans-area bakeries reeling. The 2023 rise in egg prices was also compounded by increases in feed, fuel and labor costs.

Louisiana generally does not produce enough eggs to feed the demand from consumers, Strickland said. Last year, the state produced around 50 eggs-per-person in the state, below the average amount of eggs a resident eats a year.

Farm sites typically have a lot more birds for egg production than broilers, or chickens raised for their meat. Strickland said refilling the egg laying chickens is likely to take more time.

“I don’t think in a month, egg prices are going to drop back down,” Strickland said.

Eggs may be more expensive or difficult to find in some stores, but Strickland said consumers should not be concerned about the contracting bird flu through eating eggs, adding that the USDA has protocols in place to keep the virus from entering food supplies and cooking should kill the virus.

“H5N1 usually has mild symptoms in humans, of course this was the first death that we had in Louisiana unfortunately, but we’ve had about 60-some odd cases around the nation that haven’t presented that way,” Strickland said. “It’s very deadly in our birds so we see it in our birds very quickly, and the USDA has a playbook for how to handle it and they depopulate the entire farm. So that doesn’t really go into our supply.”

In recent weeks, there has been a growing concern about the impact of bird flu on the cost of eggs in New Orleans. With reports of outbreaks in poultry farms across the country, many are wondering if this is causing prices to rise in the local market.

Experts have noted that bird flu can lead to a decrease in egg production, as infected birds may need to be culled to prevent the spread of the disease. This reduction in supply could potentially drive up prices for consumers in New Orleans and beyond.

Local farmers and retailers are closely monitoring the situation and taking precautions to prevent the spread of bird flu in their flocks. However, the uncertainty surrounding the issue has caused some anxiety among consumers who rely on eggs as a staple in their diet.

As the situation continues to develop, it is important for residents of New Orleans to stay informed and be prepared for potential changes in egg prices. Stay tuned for updates on how bird flu may be impacting the cost of eggs in the area.
