  • New Patriots coach Mike Vrabel ‘beyond comfortable’ working with personnel executive Eliot Wolf

Much of what Vrabel has said since being hired seems to be centered on building a rock-solid program that exudes consistency, regardless of initial results. It seems intentional; after all, the Patriots were anything but consistent under Mayo, a fact that extended from the field to the coach’s own dealings in public relations.

Vrabel, however, has made it clear he intends to steady the ship, and as Wolf hopefully supplies him with talent upgrades over the next year and beyond, the coach will be willing to adjust accordingly with the same goal in mind: return the Patriots to prominence.

“Our best player was our running back,” Vrabel explained when asked if his team’s offense would lean on the run as much as his Titans teams did. “So we tried to structure the offense, build the offense around what we felt like was our best player and what was our strength. When we did have pieces around Derrick (Henry) that we felt comfortable with, we threw it just as successfully as we ran it.

“You base whatever system and scheme that you have around the players you have. I do think there’s a lot of versatility around, not only myself but also, hopefully, the coaches that we hire.”

The scheme starts with quarterback Drake Maye, who proved himself as the signal-caller of the future in his rookie season despite operating in an offense that lacked quality talent around him. Vrabel didn’t shy from Maye’s importance to the team’s long-term plans, but stressed he wants his team to remain “efficient and explosive.”

Speaking of the offense, Vrabel still needs to fill out his staff, including offensive coordinator. Just as Vrabel was an obvious choice in New England, many expect him to dial another past Patriots lieutenant, Josh McDaniels, during his hiring process.

Vrabel wouldn’t commit to hiring McDaniels outright, instead turning back to the same goal: Build a dependable program regardless of the names associated with it.

“Um … yeah, I mean, I’m going to look at every possible candidate that can help us,” Vrabel said. “We’re going to start that process today, this afternoon, and visit with some great coaches and then we’ll see where things go.”

Judging by his time in Tennessee, Vrabel has already demonstrated he can build a winning team. His quest to do the same in New England begins now.

The New England Patriots have officially announced Mike Vrabel as their new head coach, and he couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity. In a recent interview, Vrabel expressed his confidence in working with personnel executive Eliot Wolf, stating that he is “beyond comfortable” with their partnership.

Vrabel, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Patriots organization. His leadership and strategic mindset are sure to benefit the team as they strive for success in the upcoming season.

Eliot Wolf, who joined the Patriots as a personnel executive earlier this year, has also expressed his excitement about working with Vrabel. Together, the two are poised to make a formidable team, with their combined expertise and vision for the future of the franchise.

Patriots fans can rest assured that their team is in good hands with Vrabel at the helm and Wolf by his side. With their shared commitment to excellence and drive for success, the future looks bright for the New England Patriots under this new leadership duo.

Written in the afterlife of grief, Peter Gizzi’s ‘Fierce Elegy’ brings us poems that revel in minutiae but also brave the large questions in a lyric sequence of transcendental beauty.”

They examine love and grief and wrestle with despair, opening for the listener a way into our joys, our sorrows and our songs of self. We are thrilled to have Professor Gizzi teaching in the MFA and English department and to offer so many emerging writers the opportunity to work with and learn from him.”

Gizzi, a native of Alma, Michigan, is the author of 11 collections of poetry, including: “Now It’s Dark” (Wesleyan, 2020); “Archeophonics” (Wesleyan, 2016), a finalist for the National Book Award; “Threshold Songs” (Wesleyan, 2012); among others. In 2018 his work was the subject of “In the Air: Essays on the Poetry of Peter Gizzi” (Wesleyan).

  • ‘There’s a majesty to grief’: TS Eliot poetry prize winner Peter Gizzi | Poetry

Winning the TS Eliot prize came as a shock to American poet Peter Gizzi. “I had zero expectations”, he says. “All I know is I was overwhelmed.” In fact, the 65-year-old says he almost cried when his name was read out for his collection Fierce Elegy.

When we talk the next day – Gizzi is speaking over Zoom from Valencia, where he flew to see family after attending the ceremony in London on Monday night – he is clearly still emotional. The prestigious poetry award holds particular significance for him, having long felt an affinity with TS Eliot. In fact, Gizzi and his friend, the poet and scholar JH Prynne, even went on a pilgrimage to the village that features in the final poem in Eliot’s Four Quartets.

“When I came to England in 1994, Jeremy [Prynne] asked ‘what should we do?’” I said Little Gidding wasn’t far, and he said, ‘Yes, that’s right. We shall go and have a picnic,” Gizzi tells me. “We went the next day, and in the churchyard read the Four Quartets.”

Often described as a “poet’s poet”, Gizzi has long been a major figure in US poetry. Born in Michigan in 1959, he delayed going to college and instead was part of the punk scene in New York. At the same time, he was reading the poets who remain strong influences on him: Allen Ginsburg, Rimbaud, Keith Waldrop and John Ashbery. Their work helped to form his view that poetry is “like friendship. It’s a very intimate art. It happens one poem at a time over a life.”

Poetry first came into Gizzi’s life in tragic circumstances when he was 12. His father had died in a plane crash in 1972. It was a year later, when his late brother Michael, also a noted poet, wrote a piece called Requiem in March, that Gizzi was alerted to the possibilities of what poetry could do.

“The poem had the lines, ‘if it was only a plane crash / why didn’t you walk from the wreckage’” That was the “first true thing anyone had said” in the aftermath of the crash, Gizzi says. “I was just so angry when people had tried to console me. But I realised poetry is the way. A light came on and I’ve never stopped reading it.”

Gizzi’s 11 collections of poetry have seen him move from conscious attempts to engage with politics, to something more inward facing. “I realised I don’t want to be a trumpet,” he says. “I don’t want to just respond to the news. This is a bogus trail. I don’t want to follow this.”

But he’s at pains to stress that doesn’t mean his later poems are autobiographical. “My poems are lived. The ‘I’ belongs to all of us. I mean, Peter Gizzi is there, but he’s just a piece of it, because that pronoun that we share is wound and sprung with so much historical consciousness. So many affiliated voices speak through it when we use it. Language is bigger than me, it’s older than me. It doesn’t live in me – we all live in it.”

This shift has also been due to Gizzi losing a number of friends and family members over the last 15 years, including his mother and both his brothers. Many of the poems in Fierce Elegy try to grasp at what might be beyond death; an image that comes back often is the attempt to see into the invisible. For Gizzi, this ties into the idea that the elegy can be a tool that helps us to understand that there is a lot to living and dying that is beyond language.

    Photograph: Penguin

“I believe that joy and sorrow are a very complex ecosystem. We can’t have one without the other,” he says. “I also find elegies joyful because there’s a majesty to grief. And the majesty is to understand the mystery of this thing we call being.”

And why are they “fierce” elegies in particular? “I imagine ferocity in this instance to be an act of vulnerability,” Gizzi says. “I believe the elegy can take a broken heart in a fierce world and transform it into a fierce heart in a broken world.”

Sound is also crucial to how Gizzi’s poems work on readers. While it might appear many of the short lines in Fierce Elegy make it a struggle to feel the rhythm of the poems, actually he is asking you to hear and feel the musicality that underpins them. “Sound is sculptural, you can live inside a piece of music,” he says. “So I’m really interested in poetry that has a musical quality.”

Gizzi thinks Fierce Elegy resonates with so many readers because of its deliberately pared-down language. “George Oppen, the great American objectivist poet, said: ‘I like all the little words: tree, house, hill.’ And I began to think, well, these are the words in which we live. Could I say more by saying less? Poems are as much about what’s not there as what’s there, right?”

What is there for Gizzi right now is a celebratory dinner with his family. Before he goes, he reiterates how thankful he is for the prize and the recognition it has brought him. “I love my work. I believe in my work. It’s my life. I stand by it.”

Peter Gizzi, the winner of the TS Eliot poetry prize, explores the majesty of grief in his award-winning collection. In his poignant and evocative poetry, Gizzi delves into the depths of loss and longing, capturing the complex emotions that come with mourning.

With lyrical language and haunting imagery, Gizzi’s work conveys the beauty and power of grief, illuminating the transformative nature of sorrow. Through his exploration of loss, Gizzi invites readers to confront their own emotions and experiences, offering a cathartic journey through the landscape of grief.

As the recipient of the prestigious TS Eliot poetry prize, Peter Gizzi’s work stands as a testament to the enduring impact of poetry in navigating the complexities of human emotion. His poignant reflections on grief serve as a reminder of the majesty and beauty that can be found in even the darkest of moments.

The French outlet writes that in the next few hours Hull will send an offer valued at around €2 million for the young player. • Hull City enquire about AS Monaco’s Eliot Matazo

According to Sacha TavolieriEFL Championship side Hull City have enquired about a move for out-of-favour AS Monaco midfielder Eliot Matazo (22).

Matazo, an academy product of the Principality club, has failed to establish himself in the first team. In competition for a spot in the starting XI with the likes of Denis Zakaria, Lamine Camara and fellow graduate Soungoutou Magassa, the Belgium youth international has found opportunities limited. He has made just seven appearances in all competitions, including just two starts.

Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro said that the club were open to departures this month and Matazo could be one of them. Tavolieri understands that an enquiry has been made by Hull City, however, as things stand, there is neither an offer to their counterparts at Monaco, nor to the player himself.

However, it is one to follow as Tavolieri understands that the English club’s interest could become more concrete in the coming days.

It remains to be seen whether AS Monaco will be willing to part ways with the promising youngster, but Hull City are keen to explore the possibility of bringing him to the Championship. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing transfer saga.

NC State reportedly set to hire D.J. Eliot as next defensive coordinator

According to multiple sources, NC State is set to hire D.J. Eliot as their next defensive coordinator. Eliot, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at Colorado, will be tasked with revamping a Wolfpack defense that struggled at times during the 2021 season.

Eliot brings a wealth of experience to the position, having also served as the defensive coordinator at Kentucky and Florida State. He is known for his aggressive and innovative defensive schemes, and has a track record of developing players at every level of the defense.

Fans are hopeful that Eliot’s hiring will bring a new energy and effectiveness to the NC State defense, which has been a point of concern in recent years. With his proven track record and expertise, Eliot could be the missing piece that helps elevate the Wolfpack to the next level.

Sources: Eliot expected to be NC State defensive coordinator

North Carolina State is expected to hire D.J. Eliot as the school’s new defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Mondya night. Eliot has previously held the same title at Colorado, Kentucky, Kansas and Temple.

He was most recently a linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 and served as a consultant to Baylor last season. He has a significant background in simulated pressures as a scheme specialty.

Eliot, 48, also worked as an assistant at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher from 2010-12, which gives him ACC experience, and knowledge of the league, albeit in a former format.

The hire adds another change to NC State’s staff for next season. Earlier in the day, and less than 48 hours after the season ended, NC State fired offensive coordinator Robert Anae and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper. Also, Gavin Locklear was named tight ends coach on that side of the ball.

The Wolfpack just wrapped up a disappointing 6-7 season that featured a 26-21 loss to East Carolina Saturday in the Go Bowling Military Bowl. In the final minute of that loss, members of the Pirates and Wolfpack got into a brawl that did not put the program in the best light.

The players began brawling in the final minute of East Carolina’s 26-21 victory in the Go Bowling Military Bowl on Saturday night, and the teams won’t have to wait long to see each other again. They face off to open next season.

“I’m embarrassed as a coach,” NC State coach Dave Doeren said after the loss. “I know our players are too. That is not how people of this program, the players of this program, staff of this program, want anything to do with something like that. To me, it was a terrible response to something that happened to one of our players, and there’s no excuses for it. So I apologize to ECU and their team for the way we responded.”

East Carolina and NC State will open next season against each other, on Aug. 30.\

According to multiple sources, former Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is expected to join NC State as their new defensive coordinator. Grantham will replace Tony Gibson, who left the Wolfpack to join Auburn’s coaching staff. Grantham brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the defensive coordinator at Georgia, Louisville, and Mississippi State. NC State fans are hopeful that Grantham can help improve the team’s defense and lead them to success in the upcoming season.
