  • Paul Skenes, Gunnar Henderson, Elly De La Cruz

The superstar trio were revealed as the MLB The Show 25 cover athletes on Tuesday. It will be a one-of-a-kind cover to celebrate the 20th anniversary of MLB The Show by showcasing the future of baseball.

MLB The Show 25 will be released on March 18 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and the Nintendo Switch. Fans can preorder the game starting on Feb. 4 at 9 a.m. ET on TheShow.com and in stores.

The first edition of MLB The Show was released in 2006 with future Hall of Famer David Ortiz as the cover athlete. Twenty years later, MLB The Show 25 marks the first time there’s ever been more than one player on the cover of Major League Baseball’s flagship video game.

And what a trio to pick. Skenes, Henderson and De La Cruz have taken MLB by storm. They’re three of the most exciting young players to watch in the game today.

Skenes, the Pirates’ electric ace, is the reigning National League Rookie of the Year after going 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in his first big league season. He’s just 22 years old.

Henderson, the Orioles’ star shortstop, was a top-five MVP finisher in the AL in 2024 after a 37-homer, 21-steal season. He’s just 23.

And De La Cruz, the Reds’ power-speed shortstop phenom, was a first-time All-Star who hit 25 homers and swiped a Major League-leading 67 bags. He just turned 23 in early January.

“Historically, we’ve chosen a single cover athlete for MLB The Show, someone who is at the pinnacle of the sport,” said MLB The Show global marketing group manager Todd Liss. “However, with the unprecedented young talent coming into the league, we wanted to represent the changing current climate of baseball and showcase it on our cover. These three players are changing what’s possible in baseball, and we’re changing how many players can be on the cover of The Show.”

The three-player cover is a unique way for MLB The Show to continue highlighting the game’s brightest young stars, which has been a trend for the game ever since the throwback 2017 edition where Ken Griffey Jr. was on the cover.

20 years of MLB The Show cover athletes

Skenes is the second Pirates player to make the cover of MLB The Show — Andrew McCutchen was the first, in 2013. Henderson is the first Orioles player to be on the cover of an MLB The Show game (Cal Ripken Jr. was on the cover of MLB ’99, one of the predecessors of the game before it became “The Show” in 2006). De La Cruz is the first Reds player to ever be on the MLB The Show cover.

“MLB is entering this dynamic era, with electric young talent coming up to The Show and changing the way the game is played,” Liss said. “We wanted to tell the story of this era by highlighting three of the most exciting young players in the world right now: Elly, Gunnar and Paul.”

Paul Skenes, Gunnar Henderson, Elly De La Cruz: Rising Stars in the Making

In the world of sports, there are always new stars on the rise, ready to make their mark on the game. Paul Skenes, Gunnar Henderson, and Elly De La Cruz are three young athletes who are quickly making a name for themselves.

Paul Skenes, a talented basketball player, has been turning heads with his impressive skills on the court. His speed, agility, and scoring ability have made him a standout player in every game he plays. With a bright future ahead of him, Skenes is definitely one to watch.

Gunnar Henderson, a rising star in baseball, has been making waves with his powerful hitting and solid fielding. His natural talent and work ethic have helped him become a standout player on his team, and he is quickly gaining recognition as one of the top prospects in the sport.

Elly De La Cruz, a promising young soccer player, has been making a name for herself with her speed, skill, and scoring ability. Her determination and passion for the game have helped her excel on the field, and she is quickly becoming a player to watch in the world of soccer.

These three athletes are just getting started on their journey to success, and their talent and dedication are sure to take them far. Keep an eye out for Paul Skenes, Gunnar Henderson, and Elly De La Cruz as they continue to make their mark on the sports world.

  • ‘MLB The Show 25’ cover athlete leaked? Reds star Elly De La Cruz appears to announce he’s headlining video game

‘MLB The Show’ is an annually released baseball video game by San Diego Studios. Similar to Madden for NFL or 2K for NBA, it is the main gaming franchise for baseball fans.

While there isn’t a Madden-esque curse involved with the cover athlete selection, fans are always curious on who will grace the cover. It also feels like Madden or 2K tends to select a top player in the league, while recently, MLB the Show has used its platform to elevate a lesser known player to give fans an inside look into their personality.

While not officially released yet by San Diego Studios, it appears that Reds star shortstop Elly De La Cruz has leaked that he will grace the cover of ‘MLB the Show 25’, which is expected to release sometime in March.

Why is Elly De La Cruz ‘MLB The Show’ cover athlete?

De La Cruz has been an instant hit with fans since being called up by Cincinnati in 2023. He is hard to miss, standing at 6-foot-5 while ironically playing a position with the word “short” in it. De La Cruz is a scary blend of power and speed. Through 258 games in his career, he has stolen 102 bases and hit 38 home runs. If he can get a little more consistent at the plate, there is a real chance that he is able to average a 40-40 season.

The Cincinnati faithful had been tracking De La Cruz’s rise up through the minors, but most fans first learned about him when he got the call up to the majors. It’s always a big deal when players get called up the first time, and De La Cruz had about as good of a reaction as anyone. He even reached base safely three times in his debut.

Cincinnati has smartly started building around De La Cruz. With his blend of size, speed and power, he should develop into the face of the franchise if he can lower his strikeout rate. He is a highlight reel waiting to happen, especially given how much he likes stealing home.

List of ‘MLB The Show’ cover athletes

De La Cruz becomes the 19th cover athlete of the annual video game release. He follows in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s footsteps, who was on the cover of MLB The Show 24.

Fans of the popular baseball video game series MLB The Show may have gotten an early look at who will be gracing the cover of the upcoming installment, as Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz seems to have accidentally leaked the news.

In a recent social media post, De La Cruz shared a photo of himself holding what appears to be a mock-up of the MLB The Show 25 cover, complete with his own likeness front and center. While the post has since been deleted, many fans were quick to grab screenshots and share the news across various platforms.

If the leak is indeed accurate, this would mark the first time that De La Cruz has been featured on the cover of the popular video game series. The young outfielder has been making a name for himself in the MLB with his impressive play on the field, and it seems that he may now be getting some recognition in the gaming world as well.

Of course, it’s important to take this news with a grain of salt until an official announcement is made by the developers of MLB The Show. But if this leak turns out to be true, fans of the game can look forward to seeing Elly De La Cruz on the cover of MLB The Show 25 when it is released later this year. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available!
