  • Ariana Grande keeps Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba ears next to her printer

Ariana Grande recently revealed that Cynthia Erivo‘s prosthetic Elphaba ears from Wicked now reside in a very… unique place in her home.

“Right now, they’re just, like, next to the printer,” the actress admitted in a recent BBC Radio 1 interview. “With, like, pens and printer and then Cynthia’s ears.”

Still, Grande noted that she’s open to potentially moving them from their place of pride next to the printer in order to playfully prank her guests. “But sometimes if I’m having guests over or if I put out a tray of whatever, I’ll just kind of leave them nearby to see if anyone gets a little confused,” she said. “I’m just kidding. I’ve never done that, but I will. No, yeah, they’re next to the printer for now.”

Grande added that it feels like a good spot for them. “Framing them is weird,” she confessed as interviewer Ali Plumb began to change topics. “Sorry! Go ahead, I’m still thinking about it. I’m spiraling about it.”

Plumb then offered up his own ear placement suggestion. “I think hide them in the downstairs loo and just have them there with no context, don’t explain them, that’s where they live,” he said, prompting Grande to reply, “I love it.”

Why exactly did Erivo end up sporting prosthetic ears in order to play Elphaba, you may ask? Well, the actress revealed in a November Elle interview that it was due to her collection of piercings. “I have a million piercings, so they brought in a prosthetic artist, who created basically a shell for my ears,” Erivo confessed at the time. “Those aren’t my ears!”

Grande first confessed to taking Erivo’s ear prosthetics home with her during a November Today interview. And, as it turns out, they weren’t the only prop that she took after filming wrapped, either.

“It’s just a question of, ‘What did we leave? What didn’t we take?’” Grande joked, noting that she took her character Glinda’s wand, books, and “several snow globes from the Emerald City.”

She also noted that she took “a piece of Johnny Bailey … that he gave me,” but declined to shed any further information about it at the time because it’s a “movie two spoiler.”

  • Ariana Grande Kept Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba Ears

Being in Wicked was a life-long dream come true for Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda in the feature adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. Getting to be part of the world has been huge for her, so it makes sense that she kept some souvenirs from the set to remember the experience… including a key prop that helped transform Cynthia Erivo into Elphaba.

For anyone on the internet who has been holding space for the friendship between Grande and Erivo, the duo has talked about their matching “for good” and poppy tattoos as part of all the ways they have expressed their love for one another like the real life Glinda and Elphie they are. Recently a new addition to their bestie lore has been revealed: Grande does actually have in her possession Erivo’s prosthetic ears from the shoot.

In Grande’s recent interview with BBC Radio 1, the Oscar nominee confirmed it, and revealed where exactly she keeps her odd keepsake of a piece of Elphaba’s body. “So right now they’re just next to the printer, like with like pens and printer and then like Cynthia’s ears.” (The props were made to cover the piercings on Erivo’s her real ears.) “But sometimes if I’m having guests over, if I put out a tray of whatever, I’ll just kind of leave them nearby to see if anyone gets a little confused.”

Grande quickly interjected, “I’m just kidding, I’ve never done that, but I will. No, yeah, they’re next to the printer for now. Framing them is weird.”

It makes us wonder what Erivo might have kept of Glinda’s from the film, and if it’s as much of a choice as Grande’s trinkets. Friends honor each other in so many unique ways and the way the duo gush over each other is a tribute to their love of their Wicked characters.

The interview with Grande goes on to discuss one of her favorite moments during the shoot: when Erivo winked at Grande during the film’s pivotal “Defying Gravity” performance to help anchor the actress in Glinda’s strength. It nearly broke Grande out of character, but she held it together—”It’s a very emotional moment,” Grande said of that powerful and affirming gesture—and director Jon M. Chu kept it in the final cut.

“I think it’s very hard to say goodbye to someone that you love. And I think in that moment, we’re both breaking. And I think the wink was so generous and warm because I think she knows how hard it is for Glinda to open up and cry and to become emotional like that,” Grande said. “That’s why I’m trying so hard not to, and I’m crying through—I’m smiling through the—and I’m trying not— I’m holding back and she’s just like, ‘I’ve got you, it’s okay.’”

Grande continued, “And I think that’s what is so beautiful about ‘Defying Gravity’ is that it’s the true example of unconditional love. It is saying to someone, ‘I recognize that we can no longer grow together. We have to grow apart and I want that for you because I know it’s right and best for you but it just isn’t right and best for me. We’ve got this.’ And the wink is such a—it’s such a loud way of saying that.”

  • Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Know What Glinda and Elphaba Mean to Wicked Fans

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Know What Glinda and Elphaba Mean to Wicked Fans

The emotional press tour for Wicked continues on to awards season as the film hits its digital release. And listen, at this point complaining about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s displays of sisterhood is tired from anyone who hasn’t shot two films back to back and sung the musical’s iconic songs live.

These women became Elphaba and Glinda for the fans and it shows. In an interview with Variety, the stars discussed their transformations—particularly Grande. As one of the most recognized global pop superstars, she had to completely become unrecognizable in the role and perhaps reach to the roots of who she truly has been all along: a theater kid at heart with a dream to play a role of a lifetime.

“Maybe people underestimate how long we spent finding and disappearing into these women,” Grande told the trade. “So when certain inflections or mannerisms take time to melt away, sometimes people poke fun. But we had a job to do, and we had things to get lost in—because that’s what the piece required.”

She added that she was likely to keep Glinda with her into her next evolution. “I think that might stay,” she said, in particular referring to her new Old Hollywood lilt. “Galinda required a lot of vocal work for me. Certain things maybe won’t melt away. Some will, but I’m really grateful for the pieces that will stay with us forever. What a beautiful thing to be left with, and to feel the ghost of every day.”

For Erivo, becoming Elphaba meant taking a for the visible representation of anyone who’s felt marginalized. In the days since the film’s release, Erivo has been touched by outpouring of love for the Ozdust Ballroom scene. Anyone who’s ever felt othered knew exactly what Elphaba felt the moment she stuck out upon arrival at the social gathering among Ozians and Shiz students. “I was talking to a friend earlier this week,” Erivo said, “and he was like, ‘I just want to confirm for you that you were bullied.’ This moment gave me the opportunity to revisit, process, feel it again, and share it.” And it made the instant where Galinda joins her in dance to accept her the core of the film’s messaging of belonging.

To Grande, that moment juxtaposed with the film’s opening says a lot about the importance of sisterhood and allyship. The film’s opening is her character lighting an effigy of her friend, Wicker Man-style. “Much like how hard the Ozdust felt for you, that’s how it felt to light you on fire a million times in a row!” she said of the emotionally challenging task.

As a true Wicked fan, Grande recalled how the story has always been about the somehow radical notion that we need to stick together with those we love, no matter how different they are, in the face of the glossy Emerald City facade of fascism behind the curtain. “When Wicked first came out on Broadway, I remember the people in my life having that exact discussion,” Grande shared. “It’s time for people to say, ‘Oh, how can I be a better ally?’ Because that’s how we’ve always survived. We’ve always been able to survive with those friendships and those allies.”

Erivo added, “The thing that keeps coming back to me is how much people need it,” she said. “It gives people the permission to think of themselves as people that can help. It might not be easy, but it isn’t impossible. That’s the sort of thing that permeates.”

Wicked is out in theaters now and is also available on digital.
