  • Oil Companies Embrace Trump, but Not ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’

President Trump is swinging American energy policy sharply in favor of fossil fuels, but oil and gas companies say those changes won’t push them to engage in the frenzy of new drilling that Mr. Trump wants.

The oil industry is thrilled by Mr. Trump’s executive orders, which are designed to make life harder for renewable energy companies and easier for oil, gas and pipeline businesses. But on the critical question of whether his policies will lead to more oil and gas production — one of Mr. Trump’s central goals — industry executives say not unless prices rise a lot, something the president says he will not stand for.

Mr. Trump’s aim is to support oil and gas by loosening the rules that govern extracting, transporting and exporting fuels while kneecapping the competition, including wind turbines, electric vehicles and other low-emissions technologies. That’s a powerful market signal, but not enough for companies to “drill, baby, drill.”

“What you are seeing is a huge amount of positivity,” said Ron Gusek, president of Liberty Energy, an oil field services company whose chief executive was picked by Mr. Trump to lead the Energy Department. “But it’s too early to say that that’s going to translate into a change in actual activity levels here in North America.”

For drilling and fracking to pick up substantially, oil and natural gas prices would have to rise, executives say, an outcome that is at odds with Mr. Trump’s goal of stemming inflation by reducing the cost of energy. Oil companies won’t spend money on production, which is already near record levels in the United States, if they are not confident that they can make money from the extra fuel they churn out.

Further complicating the president’s efforts to increase domestic production is that the industry generally is more focused on keeping spending in check than it was during his first term. Wall Street firms used to invest in fracking companies that grew quickly. Now, investors want to back profitable operators.

An index of U.S. oil and gas companies lost about 3 percent of its value last week as oil prices slid below $75 a barrel. The index lost additional ground on Monday as oil prices slid below $73 a barrel. Natural gas prices, which often rise in the winter, have surged recently as much of the country contended with very cold weather.

That said, there are early signs that the market is responding to some of Mr. Trump’s statements and orders.

Prospective customers have expressed more interest in inking long-term deals for U.S. gas exports since Mr. Trump was elected, said Ben Dell, a managing partner of the energy investment firm Kimmeridge.

“People want to be early and in the forefront of signing up for U.S. products to try and stave off potential tariff threats,” said Mr. Dell, whose firm has a majority stake in Commonwealth LNG, which is awaiting federal approval for a proposed gas-export plant on the Gulf Coast.

Mr. Trump’s declaration of a national energy emergency — paired with other executive orders — amounts to a promise to test the limits of presidential power to ensure demand for fossil fuels remains robust. It’s a sharp reversal from his predecessor’s agenda, which aimed to push the nation away from fuels that are primarily responsible for climate change.

On his first day in office, Mr. Trump instructed the Energy Department to restart permitting reviews of gas-export facilities, a process that President Joseph R. Biden had paused, though a federal judge later ordered the administration to lift that pause. The president has also threatened to place tariffs on a wide range of trading partners, including Canada and Mexico, which are close allies of the United States. (Depending on how they take shape, such levies could be extremely disruptive to the oil and gas industry, a highly global industry that relies on imported materials and fuels.)

The results of Mr. Trump’s pro-fossil fuel agenda will become clear over months and years. If anything, the past decade is a reminder that presidents can do only so much to prop up or stymie different sources of the energy.

U.S. oil and gas production rose to record heights under Mr. Biden, even as he sought to push the country toward cleaner alternatives. Mr. Trump’s efforts to support “clean, beautiful coal” during his first term were no match for cheap natural gas that ultimately outcompeted coal in the market. U.S. coal consumption fell more than a third during Mr. Trump’s first term, federal data show.

The executive orders Mr. Trump signed last week lay out a road map for making it easier and cheaper to produce oil and gas — and harder and more expensive to build equipment that would help people reduce their use of fossil fuels.

He ordered federal agencies to stop issuing leases and permits for all new wind projects pending a new environmental review. The Interior Department then placed a 60-day freeze on authorizing new solar arrays and other renewable energy projects on public lands.

In another executive order, Mr. Trump defined energy to include oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear, geothermal and hydropower — pointedly excluding wind turbines and solar panels. He also told agencies to stop distributing money that Congress had set aside for products like the installation of fast charging stations along highways. Legal experts have said that presidents cannot stop congressionally authorized spending.

But some green energy investors are already pulling back. After Mr. Trump won November’s election, RWE, a German firm, announced that it would slash spending on U.S. offshore wind development, saying that the risks for new projects there had increased.

Within oil and gas, companies are particularly encouraged by Mr. Trump’s pledge to make it easier to build pipelines, though doing so is likely to take years because Congress would need to pass new legislation and opponents most likely will seek to block projects by challenging them in court.

Today, it is especially tricky to build pipelines that cross state lines. Companies have all but given up on building long-distance pipelines in the Northeast after earlier projects faced substantial litigation, as well as opposition from state and local officials.

As a result, companies can move only so much natural gas out of Appalachia, one of the country’s most prolific gas regions, constraining production in states like Pennsylvania and depressing prices locally. Several hundred miles away, in places like Boston, gas is generally much more expensive.

“What we’re going to have our sights focused on is very long-term, durable permitting reform that allows us to get things built here in the U.S. in a responsible manner,” said Alan Armstrong, chief executive of Williams, one of the country’s largest natural gas pipeline operators.

    Brad Plumer contributed reporting.

Oil companies have long been known for their support of conservative politicians and policies that benefit their industry. With the election of Donald Trump as president, many in the oil and gas industry saw an opportunity to further their interests. However, their support for Trump does not necessarily mean they are fully embracing the “Drill, Baby, Drill” mentality.

While Trump has been a vocal advocate for expanding domestic energy production, including offshore drilling and opening up public lands for oil and gas exploration, many oil companies have been more cautious in their approach. They recognize the need to balance energy production with environmental concerns and public opinion.

Some oil companies have been vocal in their support for Trump’s efforts to roll back regulations on the industry, such as the Clean Power Plan and fuel efficiency standards. However, they have also been investing in renewable energy projects and exploring ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

In the end, oil companies are pragmatic businesses that are focused on their bottom line. While they may support Trump’s pro-energy policies, they are also aware of the need to adapt to changing market conditions and public attitudes towards fossil fuels. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, oil companies will likely continue to navigate the complex relationship between politics, profit, and sustainability.

  • NFL keeps taking baby steps toward full embrace of a sky judge

For the past 25 years, the NFL’s approach to expanding the replay-review process has gone like this: Wait for a non-reviewable situation to create a controversy, and then expand replay to cover it in the future.

This bit-by-bit approach has accelerated in recent years, with replay assist providing a more efficient and expedient way to make real-time fixes without the delay of a full-blown replay review.

Now, as the NFL approaches the offseason with a plan to add to the replay function currently non-reviewable plays like facemask calls and unnecessary roughness for quarterback slides, someone needs to take a step back and ask the obvious question.

Why not use it for everything?

Replay review and replay assist helps to smooth out the disconnect between the things that the officials see at full speed with the naked eye (while also trying not to be trampled) and the things everyone else sees on 4K flatscreens.

The solution is simple. Put a member of the officiating crew in the booth and have that person collaborate with the on-field officials based on things that can be seen via video and missed by the folks who are intermingled with the players. It would be a full member of the crew, wearing black and white stripes and regularly captured in the broadcast. The person knows the rules. The person has worked on the field for multiple games. The person can direct flags to be dropped or picked up, and to rectify any other mistakes made by folks who, despite doing their best, can’t see everything.

And, yes, the entire replay process cries out for more transparency. The UFL has perfected it. The NFL still shuns even the suggestion of it.

At a time when more and more people think the NFL is rigged (it’s not), shining a light on the conversations between the replay booth and the referee will enhance the integrity of and public confidence in the game of professional football — especially at a time when the NFL is stuffing millions in its pockets from gambling sponsorships without reinvesting enough of that money to ensure the highest degree of accuracy in the calls made and not made.

Maybe the league is getting there, one annual meeting at a time. At some point, the ongoing expansion of replay review and replay assist will prompt someone to realize that everything should be reviewable.

Hopefully, the league will get there sooner than later. Ideally, it’ll happen in March.

The NFL has been making small strides toward implementing a sky judge in games, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the league is moving closer to fully embracing this concept.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a sky judge is an additional official who is stationed in the press box and has the authority to review and overturn on-field calls in real-time. This role is designed to provide an extra layer of officiating to ensure that the correct calls are made and to prevent egregious errors from impacting the outcome of a game.

While the NFL has been hesitant to fully commit to the idea of a sky judge, there have been some recent developments that suggest a shift in mindset. During the 2020 season, the league experimented with adding an official known as a “senior technology advisor” to assist with replay reviews. This move was seen as a step toward eventually incorporating a sky judge into regular-season games.

Additionally, the NFL has reportedly been discussing the possibility of implementing a sky judge on a permanent basis in the future. The league has recognized the benefits of having an additional set of eyes on the field and understands the importance of getting calls right, especially in crucial moments of a game.

While the NFL may not be ready to fully embrace a sky judge just yet, the fact that the league is taking baby steps toward this concept is a positive sign. As technology continues to advance and officiating standards evolve, it’s only a matter of time before a sky judge becomes a permanent fixture in NFL games.

  • Embrace Debate: Figuring Out The 2025 NBA All Star Rosters Is The Toughest It’s Been In Years

Embrace Debate: Figuring Out The 2025 NBA All Star Rosters Is The Toughest It’s Been In Years

Now that we’re in 2025, it’s time we change up the NBA debate topics. Things like 3pt shooting volume, TV ratings, rule changes etc, we can leave all that shit in 2024. At this point, we’ve all talked about those topics to death.

In 2025, there are way more entertaining things to spend time debating or talking about. From here on out we get things like All NBA, All Defense, MVP, title contenders, you know, things that everyone will surely be unbiased about which will naturally lead to a civil and calm discourse.

Just kidding, no chance that happens.

We also get the talk through this year’s All Star selections, and with about 6 weeks until the festivities we’re going to start seeing the voting totals and different cases for different players, all of which are way more fun to talk about than say, TV ratings that not a single person reading this blog gives a flying fuck about.

There’s one thing to remember when it comes to All Star selections. There is no requirement for games played like there are for all the other awards (65 games). Technically, as long as you are a current NBA player, you are eligible. This is important because with guys hurt and missing a ton of time, how that impacts the voting is going to be interesting simply because there are so many worthy candidates at all positions in both conferences. Someone who is having an All Star caliber year is going to get passed over by a guy who has been hurt and missed a ton of time, but is still very clearly an All Star player.

Before we dive into the candidates, it’s important to remember what the structure of the All Star rosters is. Starters are comprised of 2 guards and 3 frontcourt players, and usually one of those frontcourt guys is a true center. The reserves are two guards, 3 frontcourt, and then 2 wildcard positions that could be anything. More guards? More frontcourt guys? Who knows!

Barring injury replacements, in total, we usually see 5 guards, 5 forwards, and 2 centers. Things can differ a little bit based on who may get hurt and who Adam Silver selects to fill that spot, but for the most part, we get that 5-5-2 split for the 12 roster spots.

Now that you know what has to be filled, the fun can begin trying to figure out who the hell gets the nod.

    Eastern Conference

    Starters

In the East, these are the players I think 100% of people will agree should be the All Star starter locks: Giannis, Jayson Tatum, KAT, and Donovan Mitchell. I’m not sure any of this needs all that much explanation. Based on the format, that covers the 3 frontcourt and one of the backcourt, which leaves one more open roster spot for the guard position.

That’s where the fan voting is going to come into play. If someone like Jalen Brunson ends up snagging it, I don’t see too many issues with that. He’s had a great year. But you also have guys like Dame and Trae Young who are going to be in the running for that final spot, but given the team success and the market size/fan vote, it wouldn’t shock me if Brunson won it. He has slightly better production than Dame in more games played on a team that is ahead in the standings. That should matter in my humble opinion.

So if we remove Giannis/Tatum/KAT/Mitchell/Brunson from the pool, now we need to full the 2 guard-3 frontcourt-2 wild card slots. Let’s go by position:

Pick 2 guards from this group: Trae Young, Darius Garland Cade Cunningham, Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard, LaMelo Ball, Tyrese Maxey, Tyler Herro, Derrick White, Zach LaVine

Right off the bat, you see how impossible this process is going to be. I just listed 9 players at the guard position, all of which have a legit All Star case. Right away, you can take out Dame, who is an easy nod. For that last spot I’m not sure where you go. Trae Young leads the NBA in assists, but his efficiency is way down in the 30s. Haliburton broke through last year, but it’s been a bit of a “down” season by his standards. LaMelo has the flashy numbers, but his team stinks. Derrick White might end up making an All NBA team but isn’t your typical All Star. Sort of like Al Jefferson back in 2013 who did just that.

So for me, for my two bench guard spots, I’m going with Dame and Cade Cunningham. If you aren’t watching Cade play, you need to. His leap is for real and the Pistons already have as many wins now as they did all of last year, plus he has the efficiency to match despite having no spacing around him.

    OK, now for the frontcourt

Pick 3 frontcourt from this group: Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Jalen Johnson, Pascal Siakam, RJ Barrett, Bam Adebayo, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, Jimmy Butler, Nikola Vucevic, OG Anunoby, Cam Johnson, Scottie Barnes

Now, first off, I don’t really know what to do with Paolo and Franz from the Magic. Both would be surefire All Stars, but I have no idea if they’re going to be healthy, plus Paolo has played just 5 games this season. For my own list, I think you have to remove them at least from this stage. Maybe the wildcard, but of this group, at least these other guys are playing.

Knowing this group is most likely 2 wings/forwards and the other is a center, there is really only one lock in this group, which is Jaylen Brown.

What I have no idea what to do with is Joel Embiid. My guess is from now until the All Star Break, he’ll play around 20+ games. Is that enough to get him included? I can see both sides of the argument. When he’s on the floor, he’s absolutely an All Star. I mean, it’s Joel Embiid. But I can also see the side of those who say he should be left out due to availability. At this moment in time if he breaks the 20 games played mark I can’t imagine the NBA leaves him off, so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he’s snagging one of the final 2 spots for this group.

That means if we were to fill that last spot with a wing, I really do think Jalen Johnson has a legitimate argument for it. He’s had a better season than Butler, Barrett, Cam Johnson, and Barnes in my opinion, and the Hawks are sneaky better than most people expected. Granted, I’m writing this on January 2nd, and it pretty much comes down to Siakam/Johnson for me, and at the moment I’m leaning Siakam.

OK, now to the wild card spots

Pick 2 players (any position) from this group: Trae Young, Haliburton, LaMelo Ball, Maxey, Herro, White, Garland, LaVine, Jalen Johnson, Barrett, Bam, Jarett Allen, Butler, Vucevic, OG, Cam, Mobley.

For starters, you’re out of your mind if you think the Cavs are only getting 1 All Star, so one of these spots is going to either Mobley/Allen/Garland. Personally, I’d go Mobley. His leap has been such a massive part of the Cavs success, and winning matters to me.

So that leaves one final spot for everyone else. I’m not even sure how you decide if we’re being honest. I think you sort of have to lean Tyler Herro based on what he’s currently doing in MIA, but again, a guy like Trae Young leads the NBA in assists for a team that is right in line with MIA in terms of record. Of everyone left, I do think Herro has done enough to separate himself though, so he’s probably my pick.

All in all that nets out to the following

Starters: Giannis, Tatum, KAT, Mitchell, Brunson

Reserves: Jaylen Brown, Embiid, Dame, Cade Cunningham, Siakam, Mobley, Herro

If someone were to get hurt and the replacements could be any position, this is where I think you see Trae Young, Haliburton, Garland, Jalen Johnson, Barrett, Allen etc.

As you can see, some pretty awesome players are getting left off the list, and guess what? It’s even tougher in the West

    Western Conference

    Starters

Same situation in the West, while the East had 4 locks in the 5 slots, I feel pretty confident that in the West, all 5 starting spots are easy locks: Jokic, Durant, LeBron, SGA, Luka

No need to spend time debating that. That’s about as no brainer as no brainer gets, and anything outside of that would truly be wild to see.

OK, now we remove all those guys from the pool and move onto the backcourt

Pick 2 guards from this group: De’Aaron Fox, Anthony Edwards, Devin Booker, Kyrie Irving, Steph Curry, Norman Powell, James Harden, Ja Morant

We can check one name off the list right off the bat, which is Steph Curry. I’m not sure if you heard, but the All Star Game is in GS. Something tells me Steph is going to be involved.

From there, where do you go? Fox is a guy who has the production, but his team is kind of dogshit. Norman Powell has been incredible in this post Paul George world, as has James Harden at this stage of his career. Anthony Edwards is having another great season, as is Kyrie Irving.

For me, I think at this point of the season I have to give the nod to Kyrie here, over someone like Ant. That might sound crazy but their production is essentially the same, with Kyrie’s 49/44% splits slightly edging out Ant, plus his team has been better this season.

    OK, now for the frontcourt

Pick 3 frontcourt from this group: Anthony Davis, Wemby, JJJ, Anthony Edwards, Sabonis, Julius Randle, Alperen Sengun, Brandon Ingram, Jalen Williams, Lauri Markkanen

Here’s where things start to get a little interesting. I think at this point we can mostly agree that of this group, Wemby and Ant are locks. That takes care of a reserve wing and center.

The debate then becomes, who do you go with between guys AD/JJJ/Jalen Williams?

It seems insane to think OKC would only have 1 All Star, so Jalen Williams has to get the nod at some point I would say. I think if we’re being truthful, the 3 coming out of this group should be AD/Wemby/Ant. I know it looks weird to have that many back up centers, but AD is a really 4 and Wemby is an alien so to me it works just fine.

OK, now to the wild card

Pick 2 players (any position) from this group: De’Aaron Fox, Devin Booker, Normal Powell, James Harden, Ja Morant, JJJ, Sabonis, Randle, Sengun, Ingram, J-Dub, Markkanen

Welcome to arguably the most impossible part of this entire process. As I said, OKC getting 1 All Star feels a little crazy, but what, teams like HOU (2nd in the West) and MEM (3rd in the West) get 0 All Stars? That doesn’t exactly feel right either.

Given their team success and the production to match, it does seem plausible that the final two wild card slots go to JJJ/D-Dub. Tough break for the Clippers guys who have been better than expected, Fox for big numbers on a bad team, and a guy like Sengun who has been awesome for a top 3 team in the West. But that’s the whole point of this exercise, someone is going to get screwed.

In terms of replacements, Sengun/Fox would be at the top of the list for me, but as of now, they’re probably on the outside looking in.

All in all that nets out to the following

Starters: Jokic, Durant, LeBron, SGA, Luka,

Reserves: Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Wemby, Ant, AD, JJJ, J-Dub

As I said, with 6 weeks to go things can certainly change. Guys can get hurt and other guys can go on a huge run and make it impossible to leave them off, but what’s pretty undeniable is the fact that the talent level in both conferences is making this process harder and harder as each year goes by. Former All Stars are no longer making the cut for the new generation, there’s really no wrong answer with a lot of these debates considering at most it’s splitting hairs, and to me that tells you the league is in a great place.

Now surely everyone will agree with where I’ve netted out so far on January 2nd, but if not let’s hear in the comments where you’d go instead.

As we look ahead to the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, one thing is certain: predicting the rosters will be no easy task. With a new generation of young superstars emerging and established veterans still performing at a high level, the competition for All-Star spots has never been tougher.

The Eastern Conference boasts a plethora of talent, with rising stars like Zion Williamson, Jayson Tatum, and LaMelo Ball vying for their first All-Star selections. Meanwhile, perennial All-Stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, and Joel Embiid continue to dominate the league.

In the Western Conference, the battle for All-Star spots is just as fierce. Players like Luka Doncic, Ja Morant, and Devin Booker are making strong cases for their first All-Star appearances, while veterans like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kawhi Leonard remain at the top of their game.

With so much talent to choose from, the selection process for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game is sure to spark plenty of debate among fans, analysts, and players alike. Who will make the cut? Who will be snubbed? Only time will tell.

So, let’s embrace the debate and start the conversation. Who do you think will make the 2025 NBA All-Star rosters? Share your predictions and join the discussion. It’s bound to be a thrilling ride as we try to figure out the toughest All-Star selections in years.
