‘Emilia Perez’ & ‘Conclave’ Lead The Pack

The BAFTA Film Awards have unveiled this year’s longlists for 25 categories, and in the lead are Jacques Audiard’s rollicking crime drama Emilia Perez and Edward Berger’s craft papal thriller Conclave. Scroll down for the lists in full.

Emilia Perez has landed on the most longlists with 15 nods. This haul includes Best Film, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language, and leading actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña are longlisted in supporting alongside Adriana Paz. The haul of 15 longlist mentions equals the previous record first set by Edward Berger’s war feature All Quiet on the Western Front and matched last year by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon

Conclave nabbed 14 appearances on the longlists. This haul includes Best Film, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Supporting Actor for Stanley Tucci, and Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes. Emilia Perez and Conclave are trailed by Mubi’s summer breakout The Substance, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which appear on 11 longlists. Wicked and Dune: Part Two both feature on 10 longlists.

There are also prominent appearances below the leading pack from Sean Baker’s Anora (9) alongside Steve McQueen’s latest Blitz and the subversive Irish indie comedy Kneecap, which both landed on 7 longlists. Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice made its way on to 6.

Other standout mentions include Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, which is on 9 longlists. The film’s haul predominantly features below-the-line technical categories such as costume design. However, Denzel Washington pops up in Supporting Actor. Washington — a two-time Oscar winner — has never been nominated for a BAFTA. Payal Kapadia’s fiction debut All We Imagine As Light clocked three strong apperances in Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Not In The English Language.

In notable snubs, there is only one longlist appearance from Nickel Boys in Adapted Screenplay and Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers appears only twice in Original Screenplay and Editing. Conversely there are surprising appearances from Dev Patel in Leading Actor for his performance in Monkey Man and Ellen Kuras in Director for Lee

The next round of voting to determine the official nominations takes place between Friday 3 and Friday 10 January 2025. The voting period for winners is between Wednesday 22 January and Tuesday 11 February 2024. The BAFTA Film Awards take place on Sunday 16 February 2025.

BAFTA Awards Longlists: ‘Emilia Perez,’ ‘Conclave’ Lead

The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 25 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with two very different thrillers leading the pack of longlisted features.

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music thriller that was picked up by Netflix in Cannes, has emerged ahead of the race with slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list. Meanwhile “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes.

Further down, a tight pack of films includes “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown” on 11 lists, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” on 10 and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” on nine. All, with the exception of “Gladiator 2,” are on the best film longlist. Ridley Scott’s epic return to the coliseum also missed out on best director and leading man, although Denzel Washington — who has never been BAFTA-nominated before — did get a supporting actor slot.

There should be cheers from Belfast, with “Kneecap” — the raucous Irish-language music biopic that’s easily among the smallest films competing in terms of budget — managing to keep up with major studio titles, landing seven longlist slots including best film. It was also a good day at the office for “The Apprentice,” which appeared in six categories, including best film and leading actor for Sebastian Stan.

Among the absences, while many might not be overly surprised that “Gladiator 2” failed to land in most of the top categories, there’ll certainly be raised eyebrows over “Maria,” which was shut out completely (and just days before Angelina Jolie attends the Golden Globes as a leading actress nominee). Another awards favorite, “Nickel Boys,” only managed one longlist space (for adapted screenplay), while “Challengers” landed just two (original screenplay and editing).

A new addition for BAFTA this year is the children’s and family film category. Unsurprisingly, there was significant overlap with animated film, with likes of “The Wild Robot,” “That Christmas” and “Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” appearing in both longlists. However, many might consider the omission of “Paddington in Peru” a surprising omission from a debut kids and family lineup that includes “Young Woman and the Sea” And “Kensuke’s Kingdom,” with the long-awaited third feature about the Peruvian bear only finding space in the outstanding British film category.

The full list of nominations will be announced on Jan. 15 (minus the BAFTA Rising Star nominees, which will be unveiled Jan. 7), with the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony taking place Feb. 16 from London’s Royal Festival Hall. “Doctor Who” star David Tennant will be returning as host.

Emilia Perez helmer Jacques Audiard speaks about Selena Gomez’s role in his crime comedy: Reports

Emilia Perez has been riding the waves of success since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. During its award ceremony, the film’s central female cast marked a historic win as they all won the Best Actress award.

Selena Gomez shared this win with her talented co-stars, Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldana, and Adriana Paz.

This is her first time working with filmmaker Jacques Audiard, who is not new to the French film festival. Previously, he has won the prestigious Palme d’Or award for his 2015 film, Dheepan. Before that, his 2009 film, A Prophet, won the Grand Prize of the Jury whereas his 1996 film, A Self-Made Hero, won the Best Screenplay award. However, Emilia Perez is his first film breaking grounds in the American award circuit.

Besides Audiard being nominated for his direction and screenplay, the film has been receiving multiple nominations for its impressive acting performances. Gomez has also received multiple nominations, the most recent being at the Golden Globes.

During a recent interview, Audiard spoke about Gomez’s performance and great things to say about her commitment to her role.

Emilia Perez: Here’s what director Jacques Audiard said about Selena Gomez’s role in his film

Emilia Perez follows a moving portrait of four women in Mexico, who seek their own happiness. Gomez plays Jessi, a woman who mysteriously loses her partner after many years of marriage.

Here’s what the director said about Gomez’s performance as Jessi in Emilia Perez:

“Jessi had a whole story — a young American woman living on the border who belongs to American culture and tries and fails to slip into Mexican culture. The character I’d written in the original treatment was much harder, more cynical. Selena softened the character. She made her more moving. She’s torn because she belongs to another culture, because she loved a man who ultimately left her. She’s fragile. That was brought to this film by Selena.”
