Emma Raducanu suffered a shock first-round defeat to Spain’s Cristina Bucsa as she crashed out of the Singapore Open.
In her first match since announcing she was parting ways with her longtime coach Nick Cavaday, Raducanu was second best in a marathon three-hour battle with the world No 101, who fought from a set down to claim the biggest win of her career.
Bucsa’s 5-7 7-5 7-5 victory at the WTA 250 event will be a huge reality check for Raducanu, who insisted she was improving after her hefty defeat by Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open last week.
In a contest that ebbed and flowed, there was hardly anything to separate the pair and the statistics suggested as much. Bucsa won 119 points to Raducanu’s 118, but it was the Spaniard who bossed it in the big moments.
Raducanu’s second serve told its own sorry story – she landed merely 25 per cent of her points off it – which ultimately allowed Bucsa to dictate from the back of the court, executing her groundstrokes with confidence.
Bucsa is a successful doubles specialist by trade – she won a bronze medal for Spain alongside Sara Sorribes Tormo at last year’s Paris Olympics – but showed she is still a force to be reckoned with on the singles court by toppling world No 56 Raducanu.
Bucsa has a fine track record in Asia, having reached the fourth round of last year’s China Open when she defeated 11th seed Liudmila Samsonova and 24th seed Elise Mertens.
Her father, Ion, represented Moldova in biathlon and was a flagbearer at the Winter Olympics in 1998 and 2002. He has seemingly passed those endurance genes on to his daughter.
The match tipped into its fourth hour when Raducanu, who was broken at 5-5 in the deciding set, fended off two match points. Bucsa, though, meant business, and she closed out victory after Raducanu splayed a forehand wide.
Raducanu had spoken of the “pressure” she invites with her flimsy second serve in the aftermath of her chastening defeat by Swiatek last week. On this evidence, that element of her game is in most urgent need of work as she bids to climb the rankings in 2025.
After her premature exit in Singapore, Raducanu could feature as early as next Monday at the Abu Dhabi Open, having received a wildcard for the WTA 500 event.
Depending on how she fares there, she could then travel to the Qatar Open, which is the first WTA 1000 event of the season. Raducanu entered the tournament last year but fell in the first round to Ukraine’s Anna Kalinina.
British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu suffered a disappointing defeat in the first round of the Singapore Open as her serve struggles continued to plague her game.
Raducanu, who shot to fame last year after winning the US Open as a qualifier, was unable to find her rhythm on serve against her opponent, losing 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets.
The 19-year-old has been struggling with her serve in recent matches, with her double faults and lack of consistency putting her at a disadvantage against more experienced opponents.
Despite the setback, Raducanu remains positive and determined to work on her game and improve her serve in order to bounce back stronger in future tournaments.
Fans will be hoping to see the young star back in top form soon, as she continues to make waves in the world of tennis.

Britain’s Emma Raducanu suffered a disappointing defeat against world number 101 Cristina Bucsa of Spain in the opening round of the Singapore Open.
The 22-year-old was playing for the first time since her 6-1 6-0 third round loss to Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open and the news her coach Nick Cavaday was stepping back from the role to “prioritise getting back to full health”.
But in a gruelling encounter lasting three hours and three minutes and featuring 17 breaks of service, Bucsa came through 5-7 7-5 7-5 against the seventh seed in the pair’s first meeting.
The Spaniard had served for the opening set at 5-4 up but Raducanu, ranked 56, rattled off the next three games to take control of the match.
The second set started with three consecutive breaks of service to leave Bucsa 3-1 and then 4-2 up but Raducanu continued to battle and another run of three games in a row saw her go 5-4 up but Bucsa responded with the next three games to level the match.
Both players struggled to hold serve in the decider but although a weary-looking Raducanu dug deep to edge 5-4 ahead, Bucsa held and then broke her opponent at a crucial time to leave her serving for the match.
The British number two saved a couple of match points but Bucsa, the Olympic women’s doubles bronze medallist, quickly earned another and this time Raducanu netted.
Bucsa will next face either Sijia Wei of China or Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Thailand in the last 16.
Meanwhile, British number five Jodie Burrage was beaten by Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in the second round of qualifying at the Linz Open in Austria.
Burrage, who impressed in a second-round defeat by Coco Gauff at the Australian Open earlier this month, beat Serbia’s Lola Radivojevic in the first qualifying round but lost 6-4 7-6 (7-1) to Ruzic, who is ranked 18 places below the Briton at 168th in the world.
Emma Raducanu, the rising star of British tennis, has suffered a disappointing defeat at the Singapore Open. The 19-year-old, who is currently ranked as the British number two, was defeated in straight sets by her opponent in the second round of the tournament.
Despite putting up a strong fight, Raducanu was unable to overcome her opponent’s powerful game and ultimately fell short in her bid to advance further in the tournament. This loss comes as a setback for the young tennis prodigy, who has been making waves in the tennis world with her impressive performances and breakthrough victories.
However, this defeat is just a bump in the road for Raducanu, who has shown incredible talent and potential in her young career. With her determination and skill, there is no doubt that she will bounce back stronger and continue to make a name for herself on the international tennis circuit.
Fans of Raducanu will no doubt be eagerly awaiting her next match, as they cheer on the British starlet in her quest for success on the tennis court. With her talent and drive, there is no doubt that Raducanu has a bright future ahead of her in the world of tennis.

Madison Keys walked away with the biggest winner’s cheque of her career after winning the 2025 Australian Open, but surprisingly not by that much compared to her 2017 US Open final runners-up earnings.
Eight years after losing the final at Flushing Meadows against Sloane Stephens, the 29-year-old returned to her first Grand Slam final and this time she was the last player standing.
The American produced a series of incredible performances as she defeated 10th seed Danielle Collins, sixth seed Elena Rybakina, 28th seed Elina Svitolina and second seed Iga Swiatek to set up a showdown with two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
And it typically went the distance with Keys coming away a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 against the reigning world No 1.
But how much money and how many points did Keys and the other big names earn during the season-opening major at Melbourne Park?
Tennis’ newest Grand Slam winner earned A$3,500,000, which when converted comes to roughly US$2,211,000 and £1,780,000, just over 20% more than what she was paid in 2017 at the US Open.
On that occasion, she received a cheque of US$1,825,000 for finishing runner-up to Stephens in New York.
Keys started the Australian Open with career prize money of US$18,854,583 and it jumped to US$19,018,583 after her big payday.
The American also picked up 2,000 ranking points and will move up seven places to No 7 in the WTA Rankings, equalling her previous career high.
Sabalenka may not have defended her title, but she managed to hold off Swiatek in the battle for the No 1 ranking after reaching the final.
The Belarusian earned 1,300 points and sits on 8,956 points while she was also paid A$1,900,000 (US$1,2m and £1,9m).
Swiatek and Badosa were the two players who lost in the semi-finals and they received $1,100,000 (about US$695,000 and £559,000) to go with 780 points.
Coco Gauff, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svitolina and Emma Navarro went out in the quarter-finals and each player went home with 430 points and A$665,000 (US$420,00 and £338,000).
Does Aryna Sabalenka deserve the abuse flowing her way after Australian Open defeat?
The likes of Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula, Collins, Jasmine Paolini, Ons Jabeur and Emma Raducanu lost in the third round and they earned A$290,000 (US$183,000 and £147,000) while 100 points were added to tallies in the WTA Rankings.
The players who lost in the first round earned 10 points (although those who came through qualifying will have picked up an extra 30 points) and A$132,000 (US$83,000 and £67,000) with an added bonus of A$72,000 if you won three matches in qualifying.
Lucky loser Eva Lys reached the fourth round and went home with A$420,000 (US$265,000 and £214,000) plus A$49,000 (US$31,000 and £$25,000) after reaching the second round of qualifying.
At the 2022 Australian Open, Madison Keys earned $648,850 and 780 points, Coco Gauff earned $299,100 and 780 points, and Emma Raducanu earned $158,250 and 240 points. These talented players put on impressive performances at the Grand Slam tournament and walked away with well-deserved earnings and ranking points. Congratulations to them on their achievements! #AustralianOpen #MadisonKeys #CocoGauff #EmmaRaducanu

We can turn our life into a musical once again.
The next Oscar ceremony is still more than a month away, which means nothing can be better than revisiting previous years’ big award winners — especially since one of them is now heading to a free streaming service.
Damien Chazelle’s 2016 hit musical La La Land starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling never quite left its viewers’ shattered hearts ever since its theatrical release and later a triumphant win at the Oscars. Well, soon you might want to relive the whole drama when the movie finally lands on Tubi.
The film that garnered all critical and commercial success back in 2017 will be all yours to watch and rewatch starting from February 1 when it’s set to arrive on the free streaming platform Tubi.
La La Land follows rising actress Mia and jazz-obsessed pianist Sebastian who, despite their striking differences, give their love story a chance that later on leads to a heartbreaking, yet very real-life-coded finale.
The movie earned an impressive amount of $506 million dollars against its modest initial budget of only $30 million, also receiving numerous accolades and securing a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie’s stunning success was wrapped up by the Oscar ceremony that concluded the awards season back in 2017, making La La Land a big triumphant with a total of six statuettes.
The movie almost made it to becoming the best film of the year — well, sort of, since some chaos backstage provoked a huge misunderstanding when La La Land, first named Best Picture, was quickly deprived of the award initially meant for Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight.
As the ceremony’s executives explained later, the card for Best Picture somehow turned out to be a duplicate for the Best Actress category, a bit earlier won by La La Land’s Emma Stone.
Exciting news for fans of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling! The critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning film “La La Land” will soon be available to watch for free. The movie, which captured hearts and took home six Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Actress for Stone, will be added to a popular streaming platform’s library next month.
“La La Land” follows the love story of Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a jazz musician, as they navigate the highs and lows of pursuing their dreams in Los Angeles. The film’s stunning visuals, catchy music, and heartfelt performances by Stone and Gosling have made it a beloved favorite among audiences.
So mark your calendars and get ready to relive the magic of “La La Land” from the comfort of your own home. Don’t miss this chance to watch one of the most celebrated films of recent years for free. Get your popcorn ready and prepare to be swept away by the enchanting world of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s on-screen chemistry.

You can ask anyone you know who’s followed their dreams and attempted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, and they’ll undoubtedly tell you that it’s a sea of “nos” rarely padded by a drop of “yes”. Taking the heartache, love, and magic that goes into chasing a life in the arts, filmmaker Damien Chazelle penned and directed the hit 2016 film, La La Land. Combining showstopping musical numbers with a heartbreakingly Hollywood romance, the movie follows two industry hopefuls as they break all the rules and try to strike out to find their own slice of heaven. Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, eager audiences will be happy to know that soon, La La Land will be streaming completely free of charge thanks to its February 1 arrival on Tubi.
Mia (Stone) is an actress who’s completely down on her luck, bombing audition after audition, when she walks into a jazz bar one night and meets Sebastian (Gosling), an incredibly talented pianist who’s just been fired by the club’s owner. Completely over the hurdles the world continues to throw their way, both Mia and Sebastian decide to make their own luck in The City of Angels. As Sebastian makes moves to open his own jazz club and Mia works on writing a script worthy of her talents, the pair find themselves falling into a fantastical sort of love that can only happen in the movies.
Filled with bright, bold, and vibrant color schemes, catchy original songs, plenty of well choreographed dancing, and usage of iconic Los Angeles locations, La La Land became an immediate hit when it shuffled onto screens in 2016. At the box office, the film proved to be a sensational success for Lionsgate, earning a staggering $506.4 million against its $30 million budget. Its critical feedback was no different, as the title currently holds the Certified Fresh critics’ approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Having previously wowed audiences with his sophomore feature, 2014’s Whiplash, Chazelle somehow outdid himself once again, bringing audiences back to the cinema for a movie musical spectacle – something we just don’t get much of anymore.
Landing a whopping 14 nominations at the Academy Awards, La La Land was undoubtedly the darling of that year’s festivities. Chazelle won the title of Best Director, with Stone taking home the trophy for Best Actress and Justin Hurwitz nabbing the award for Best Original Score. But, hearts would be broken when it came time to announce the night’s big winner for Best Picture. Taking the stage to announce the most sought-after award of the night, presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty made an oopsie when they announced La La Land as the winner, instead of Moonlight. The error was corrected as quickly as possible, but in one of the cringiest moments to happen until Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, the team of La La Land was well into their acceptance speeches when it was revealed that there had been an accident with the cards.
Soon, you can see the movie that spawned one of the Oscar’s biggest collective gasps when La La Land dances onto Tubi in February.
“Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Sing and Dance In This Oscar Winning Movie Heading to a Free Streamer”

La La Land is one of Damien Chazelle’s most acclaimed works, and a wild theory connects it to another one of Chazelle’s best movies through one actor. Damien Chazelle made his directorial debut in 2009 with the romantic musical Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, and though it was a critical success, he got worldwide recognition in 2014 for Whiplash. This psychological drama was a critical and commercial success and gave Chazelle his first Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Chazelle’s next project was the musical rom-com La La Land, also written by him and starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. La La Land was also a critical and commercial success and gave Chazelle his first Oscar for Best Direction. Although he has made more movies since then, Whiplash and La La Land continue to be Chazelle’s best works, and despite their differences, some viewers have found some similarities between them – and through one actor they have in common, a theory has linked La La Land and Whiplash.
A theory shared on Reddit suggests Whiplash and La La Land take place in the same universe thanks to J. K. Simmons’ characters in each movie. Simmons starred in Whiplash as Terence Fletcher, a jazz instructor and the conductor of the Shaffer Conservatory Studio Band. When jazz drummer and Shaffer student Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is recruited by Fletcher to play in the Studio ensemble, he quickly finds out that, although initially encouraging, Fletcher is aggressively strict, and goes as far as to be verbally and physically abusive to his students.
Despite this, Neiman becomes determined to impress Fletcher and pushes himself beyond his own limits to achieve it. Fletcher is eventually fired from Shaffer due to his abusive behavior and methods, and at the end of Whiplash, Neiman and Fletcher have one final confrontation on stage, though not a physical one this time. Chazelle and Simmons reunited in La La Land two years later, where Simmons played Bill.

Is Whiplash Based On A True Story? Damien Chazelle’s Real Inspirations Explained
The 2014 movie Whiplash stars Miles Teller as an aspiring drummer and J.K. Simmons as his ruthless teacher. What was the inspiration for the film?
La La Land follows jazz musician Sebastian (Gosling) and actress Mia (Stone), who fall in love while continuing to pursue their dreams in Los Angeles – Sebastian wants to have his own jazz club, while Mia wants to succeed as an actress. Bill is the manager of the restaurant Sebastian works at and who ends up firing him. The theory, then, says Fletcher and Bill are the same person, with La La Land taking place some time after the events of Whiplash. According to the author of the theory, following his firing, Fletcher moves to Los Angeles and becomes the manager of the restaurant.
Fletcher/Bill now also has a dislike toward jazz after Neiman almost ruined his career.
Fletcher continues his passion for music and jazz at the restaurant, but when Sebastian doesn’t follow his rules of playing a specific setlist, Fletcher remembers his days at Shaffer and, fitting with his undying perfectionism, decides to fire Sebastian. Fletcher/Bill now also has a dislike toward jazz after Neiman almost ruined his career, so it’s yet another reason for him to get rid of Sebastian.
While the theory is a fun way to connect Chazelle’s best movies, and there are some basic similarities between Fletcher and Bill, it doesn’t make sense thanks to Whiplash. Fletcher is abusive, that’s undeniable, but he’s also very passionate about music and jazz. Bill doesn’t have that same passion, and saying that Fletcher stopped liking jazz after what happened with Neiman doesn’t fit the character.
At the end of Whiplash, after getting his revenge on Neiman on stage, Neiman returns to the stage, cuts Fletcher’s introduction to the next song and leads the band into playing something else. Neiman then goes into an improvised solo, and Fletcher, impressed with what he just did, nods in approval. Neiman proves himself to Fletcher and the latter brings the best out of Neiman, so he really can’t have reasons to hate jazz, and especially not because of Neiman.
J. K. Simmons’ characters in Whiplash and La La Land aren’t connected and there’s nothing that can suggest these movies are part of the same universe, but they are still a great double feature. While Whiplash is a psychological drama (with Fletcher being one of the most terrifying villains of the decade) and La La Land is a more lighthearted but still dramatic musical, they are connected by their characters’ love for music. Whiplash and La La Land offer two very different musical experiences, with Whiplash being one rooted in trauma and obsession, and La La Land being rooted in romantic love.

La La Land Ending Explained (In Detail)
La La Land’s ending is an emotional conclusion to Damien Chazelle’s musical, bringing a fitting (if surprising) close to Mia and Sebastian’s romance.
In just two movies, Damien Chazelle showed two very different sides to music and where love for it can lead – one is a destructive path, while the other is a more optimistic but still potentially heartbreaking path. Whiplash and La La Land are great companions to each other, but they don’t belong to the same universe.

If you’re a fan of the 2016 movie La La Land, get ready to have your mind blown by this wild theory that completely changes the way you see Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s characters.
According to this theory, Sebastian (Gosling) and Mia (Stone) are actually stuck in a time loop, reliving the same events over and over again. This explains why certain scenes in the movie seem to repeat themselves and why the ending is so bittersweet.
In this interpretation, Sebastian and Mia are doomed to repeat their mistakes and never truly find happiness together. The movie’s musical numbers are actually the characters’ attempts to break free from the loop and find a way to be together in a different timeline.
This theory adds a whole new layer of depth to La La Land and makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about the characters and their relationship. Next time you watch the movie, keep this theory in mind and see if it changes the way you see Sebastian and Mia’s story.

A clear double bounce in the Australian Open quarter-final between Iga Swiatek and Emma Navarro has reignited the debate over how tennis uses video technology.
Navarro lost a point when she trailed 6-1 2-2 A-40 despite the ball bouncing twice in front of a stretching Swiatek, who went on to win 6-1 6-2.
Because Navarro continued playing, instead of immediately stopping the point, the American eighth seed was unable to challenge the call.
The Australian Open has introduced a video review system for the first time this year – but it can only be used on a point ending call or when a player stops play.
Afterwards Navarro said the incident did not “cause a momentum swing” but still believes there should be a change to the system.
“I think we should be able to see it afterwards,” Navarro said.
“It happened so fast. In the back of your head you’re like, ‘OK maybe I can still win the point even though it wasn’t called’.
“It’s going to be a downer if I stop the point and it turns out it wasn’t a double bounce.
“It’s tough.”
Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek said she “wasn’t sure” if it was a double bounce after it was suggested she should have conceded the point.
“It was hard to say because I was full sprinting. I don’t remember even seeing the contact point,” said the Polish second seed.
“I don’t know. Sometimes you don’t really look when you hit the ball.
“I thought this is like the umpire’s kind of job to call it. I was also waiting for the VAR, but I didn’t see it so I just proceeded.”
The Australian Open 2025 women’s singles final between Iga Swiatek and Emma Navarro has sparked controversy and reignited the debate about the use of video technology in tennis.
In a crucial moment of the match, Swiatek appeared to hit a shot that bounced twice before Navarro could return it. However, the umpire did not call the double bounce, leading to a heated argument between the players and a wave of criticism from fans and experts.
Many have pointed out that if video technology had been used to review the play, the correct call would have been made and the outcome of the match could have been different. Proponents of video technology argue that it is necessary to ensure fair play and uphold the integrity of the game.
On the other hand, opponents of video technology argue that it slows down the pace of the game and disrupts the flow of play. They believe that human error is part of the sport and should be accepted as such.
As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the controversy surrounding the double bounce in the Australian Open final has once again brought the issue of video technology in tennis to the forefront. It remains to be seen whether changes will be made to the rules and regulations to address this contentious issue.
