  • Employee Resource Groups, Allyship And Partnerships


    Be careful what you believe from the latest anti-DEI headlines. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is not going away. It’s forecasted to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 12% according to PR Newswire, primarily through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and partnerships.

    Yes, there has been pushback from conservative lobbyist groups like the National Center for Public Policy Research. Meta, Walmart, Lowe’s, Tractor Supply, Ford, Toyota, Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycle, Polaris, Stanley Black & Decker, DeWalt Tools, Craftsman, Caterpillar, Boeing, Coors and Jack Daniel’s have notably pivoted their DEI strategies in recent months partially due to outside pressure.

    However, there are two sides to every story. The story that is not being told is the one of positive support for DEI. At least 10 boards have pushed back on the lobbyists, urging shareholders to vote against DEI bans. Costco, Apple, Boeing, Cigna, Coca-Cola, Citigroup, John Deere, Progressive, MGM, and PepsiCo have vocalized their support in recent months publicly for DEI. Cisco and JP Morgan Chase’s CEOs have made public statements defending their corporate DEI programs.

    While there are a number of justifiable concerns for organizations to pivot their DEI strategies, abandoning them completely is a mistake.

    What’s Really Going On?

    Corporate DEI work is still legal and is growing, not dying. According to Working IDEAL: “An Executive Order cannot prohibit private employers from engaging in lawful strategies to advance equal opportunity for all under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.” Corporate DEI work is legal, however, rarely employed tactics like hiring and promotion quotas, and mandatory training may be open to legal challenges.

    DEI pushback is not new. DEI work hit a peak in 2020-2021, then retracted in 2022-2023, to level out in 2024. Those that were not serious about DEI already stopped doing the work a long time ago. Those serious are quietly embedding it into their organizations because it is the right thing to do and keeps them out of harmful lawsuits and activists way.

    DEI is about education and debiasing systems, not hiring quotas and mandatory DEI training. A 2022 Resume Builder found that 52% of US hiring managers believe their company practices “reverse discrimination” in hiring, with one in six managers told to stop hiring white men. This was never the intention of DEI. Diversifying hiring pools, using objective criteria and equipping managers with inclusive hiring tools are best practices. Steer clear of hiring and promotion quotas, and mandatory DEI training, as they are the most likely tactics to be legally challenged.

    Exclusion is more costly than DEI. Accenture found that globally, there is $3.7 trillion on the table annually by not having inclusive work cultures. The cost of exclusion shows up in employee attrition, discrimination and pay equity lawsuits, lower revenues and profitability.

    Some well-intentioned organizations may be pivoting their language from DEI in defense. According to David Glasgow, a lawyer and executive director at the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at New York University School of Law said, “It doesn’t really matter what you call it (DEI)…if you’re in substance engaging in practices that are legally risky, then it will be just as risky as it was before.” Glasgow notes that while anti-DEI activists are searching company websites for DEI, there has to be substantial discriminatory activity for them to have a serious legal case.

    Given that DEI is expected to grow by 12% annually through 2030, how will it survive and thrive given this pushback?

    Employee Resource Groups

    Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are safe havens for people from historically marginalized groups to empathize with each other’s stories, have space for candid conversations about adversity, and to bring in allies to learn more about how they can be supportive. Ninety percent of organizations have ERGs, and they are not expected to dissolve. Even those that have adjusted their DEI strategies have kept their ERGs intact (e.g. Walmart). The subtle shift has been to engaging allies so that they’re not excluding the dominant group.

    Engaging allies (those that have power and can help address issues of exclusion) is a best practice as it often helps with the necessary resourcing and helping to address systemic issues. Including allies needs to be intentional. Successful ERGs set boundaries for allies to understand their role, educate allies on how best to contribute, and most importantly, how to take real action.

    Allyship Programs

    Beyond ERGs, allyship programming is critical to the long-term success of DEI. People in the dominant group, especially senior leadership teams tend to be majority white men, and often do not understand if they are wanted in DEI efforts. Sometimes, they don’t understand DEI because of the lack of lived experience, and struggle to take action, and can disengage because they may feel like the enemy. Despite practitioner’s best efforts, DEI does have the opportunity to further engage these dominant group members.

    Allyship programs can help bridge the gap for those with limited lived experiences with issues of diversity. Successful allyship programs focus on education, community, and most importantly, action. Education is critical for people to understand the full context before engaging in action. Having a community of other allies around them helps them not feel alone or too vulnerable when they’re trying to adjust and do things more inclusively.

    Partnerships

    Partnerships with community organizations, experts and thought leaders in DEI is also a best practice. For example, the Human Rights Campaign, despite the negative news headlines about organizations withdrawing from their index, grew by 28% in 2024 and is expected to increase more in 2025. Participating in indices like the Human Rights Campaign is not illegal. Organizations can continue to share their data and benchmark against their peers to create healthy competition for inclusion.

    Organizations also need to partner in their local communities on issues that matter to them that are aligned with their values. If inclusion is embedded in the company’s culture and values, it makes sense to focus on community issues of exclusion. That could be providing volunteer opportunities in the community, helping address healthcare or education challenges for historically marginalized groups, or donating money to organizations aligned with their mission and values.

    The future of DEI is more optimistic that you might be led to believe. It’s clear that Employee Resource Groups, allyship programs and partnerships will continue to thrive. Business leaders need to focus less on the noise around the work, and just do the work. Their bottom line will benefit.

    This is an unprecedented moment for corporate leaders to take a stand against these bullying tactics and state their inclusive intentions. This will be your competitive advantage. People remember and reward those that speak truth to power, especially when it feels hard.

  • Traveler shares moment of humanity on Charlotte tarmac after airline employee dies


    CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Following the sudden death of a 66-year-old American Airlines employee on the tarmac, his coworkers observed a moment of silence on Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s tarmac outside Gate B12.

    A police report revealed the man was hit by an American Airlines tug on the ramp at Gate B12 at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27.

    Passengers told WBTV they were asked to lower their window shades.

    A Charlotte man was preparing to fly out for work in the aviation industry when he realized what he was witnessing.

    “When I walked into the terminal and looked through the through the windows, I saw the emergency vehicles all surrounded out there, a couple fire trucks, a bunch of ambulances,” said Shawn Landry, “[I] got down to my gate and then I noticed all of the American Airlines or the ramp employees gathering in a circle and everything kind of went quiet. It seemed you know something serious had gone on.”

    He said as passengers in the terminal learned what happened, the terminal grew quiet and became somber.

    Landry served in the Air Force as a mechanic and now works in corporate aviation. He said what he saw next really moved him and caused him to snap a photo of employees gathering for a moment of silence.

    “Some team members or management were walking around circle hugging some individuals,” Landry explained. “It was pretty powerful to see everybody circling up and kind of taking a few minutes….and you know you can see some of them crying. And they just took a quick couple minutes probably of reflection and then and then broke up and went back to work.”

    While watching it all unfold, Landry reached out to his son who works on the ramp at Concord’s regional airport just north of Charlotte.

    “We talked about, you know, having your head on a swivel, you know, slowing down,” explained Landry. “You can always do everything and sometimes even these things happen.”

    The US Department of Labor Statistics reports between 2011 and 2023 fatal accidents like what happened at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Monday have happened less than ten times a year. In some of those years, there were no deaths at all.

    Needless to say, what happened on Monday morning, was truly a rare tragedy.

    “You can tell that the safety culture is big. You know, everybody’s wearing vests. You know, there’s the gloves, the the knee pads. You can see kind of see from the from standing on the outside that there seems to be a fairly decent safety culture there and it’s just sometimes, things don’t work out,” Landry explained. “I know the the world that they live in and it’s just unfortunate sometimes, you know, there’s an accident like this.”

    He said this moment of humanity captured in his photo will remain a reminder to him and others to treasure every moment.

    “It made me made me think, you know, about what I do every day and what you know the people around me are– and it’s just very, very important to take the time and you know, tell your loved ones you love them and make sure that. You know you do the best you can to come home at the end of the day,” Landry said somberly. “No matter your differences or opinions on anything…Somebody went to work and did not go home…I feel for this, this individual’s family and friends…you know, you never know.”

    An American Airlines employee told WBTV a couple people were given a rare day off Tuesday after witnessing the deadly incident.

    The Charlotte Douglas International Airport told WBTV chaplains were present speaking to employees grieving the loss of a coworker.



    I was on a flight from Atlanta to Charlotte when tragedy struck. A fellow passenger, an airline employee, suddenly collapsed on the tarmac as we were preparing to board the plane. It was a shocking and heartbreaking moment for everyone involved.

    As emergency personnel rushed to the scene, the rest of us stood there in stunned silence, unsure of what to do. That’s when a fellow traveler, a woman I had never met before, stepped forward and offered a simple but powerful gesture of humanity.

    She walked over to the fallen employee’s co-worker, who was visibly distraught, and embraced her in a hug. It was a small act of kindness, but it spoke volumes about the compassion and empathy we can show to one another in times of crisis.

    In that moment, the usual hustle and bustle of the airport faded away, and all that mattered was the human connection between us. It was a reminder that no matter how busy or hectic our lives may be, we can always find moments of kindness and solidarity with our fellow travelers.

    As we eventually boarded the plane and continued on with our journey, I couldn’t shake the memory of that moment on the tarmac. It was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of showing compassion to those around us, especially in times of need.

    I may never see that woman again, but her act of kindness will stay with me forever. It was a brief but powerful reminder that we are all connected in our humanity, and that a simple gesture of kindness can make a world of difference in someone’s darkest hour.

  • Federal employee lawsuit alleges security, privacy risks in new OPM communications system


    Federal employees have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s Office of Personnel Management, after the agency created and began testing an email system meant to deliver mass communications directly to federal employees’ inboxes.

    The lawsuit from two anonymous federal employees in the executive branch alleges OPM violated the 2002 E-Government Act by not releasing details of how the communication system will manage federal employees’ personal information stored in the system.

    Kel McClanahan, executive director of the National Security Counselors law firm, filed the pro bono lawsuit on behalf of the plaintiffs, alleging that the email system poses security risks for federal employees’ personal information.

    “A one-stop shop for information about every government employee in the federal executive branch is just a treasure trove for hackers, or even just curiosity seekers,” McClanahan said in an interview.

    The 2002 E-Government Act requires agencies to complete a “privacy impact assessment” for any new online federal system by analyzing how personally identifiable information will be collected, stored, protected, shared and managed within that system. Agencies are required to make the assessment public unless it would raise concerns with national security or reveal classified information.

    “People have a right to know where their information is being stored by the government and how well it’s being protected,” McClanahan said.

    OPM first announced the testing of its new mass communications system last week. In the following days, some federal employees said they received test emails from OPM asking them to reply “yes” to confirm whether they received the message.

    “OPM is testing a new capability allowing it to send important communications to ALL civilian federal employees from a single email address,” the agency wrote in a Jan. 23 announcement. “Testing of this messaging system functionality is expected as soon as this week.”

    The purpose of OPM’s mass communications system is unclear, but federal employees in the lawsuit pointed to the possibility of OPM using the communication method to send updates about reductions in force (RIFs). OPM declined to comment on both the lawsuit and the intentions of the new mass communication system.

    Regardless of the purpose for the messaging system, McClanahan said the data security of federal employees’ personal information is the central point of the Jan. 27 complaint.

    “We have no idea what this system is. We have no idea what the nature of the system is. All we know is that by OPM’s own language, it is a new distribution and response system,” McClanahan said. “If they’re going to set up a new system to do something that’s going to collect all this information, they have to ensure that it’s secure, and they have to ensure that people know that it’s secure — but they haven’t done any of that.”

    Several federal agencies have also reportedly sent messages to their employees about OPM’s communications system, according to the lawsuit. For example, the lawsuit states that on Jan. 23, the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security emailed employees to make them aware of the OPM email tests, and that the emails “can be considered trusted.”

    The lawsuit, however, alleges that the communications are not being sent securely due to how quickly OPM began sending out the messages.

    “Secure communications take time and coordination to plan and implement,” the lawsuit states. “Standard email is not encrypted, and it is common practice among hackers — including hackers affiliated with hostile foreign services — to begin attempting to access a new U.S. government device as soon as they learn of its deployment.”

    The plaintiffs also pointed to the 2015 OPM data breach, which put personal data of roughly 22 million current and former federal employees at risk.

    The lawsuit additionally references a recent Reddit post from an account claiming to be a long-time career federal employee at OPM. The employee stated that former OPM CIO Melvin Brown “was pushed aside just one week into his tenure because he refused to setup email lists to send out direct communications to all career civil servants.”

    The Reddit poster additionally stated that agencies are being directed to send lists of federal employees to OPM Chief of Staff Amanda Scales, a former employee at xAI, which is owned by billionaire Elon Musk. Musk is also a leader of the Department of Government Efficiency, which is facing its own series of legal action.

    In the Jan. 27 complaint against OPM, the plaintiffs are seeking to file the lawsuit as a class action lawsuit. They are calling for OPM to promptly conduct a privacy impact assessment for the new communications system.

    Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a call at 9:38 a.m. for an employee struck by a vehicle on the tarmac and the person was pronounced dead on the scene, police said in a statement.

    The incident involved a single airline ramp vehicle, the Charlotte Douglas International Airport said, but no additional details on the incident were given.

    The airport said it is “working closely with airline and first responder partners in the ongoing investigation and is providing support as needed.”

    In a statement, American Airlines said they “are devastated by the accident” and are “focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time.”

    WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s administration is testing a new capability that would allow officials to email the entire federal government workforce from a single email address, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) said in a statement Friday.

    The new capability could allow Trump to communicate directly with millions of federal workers across dozens of agencies simultaneously, with a single click of a mouse.

    The White House declined to comment.

    The effort aligns with the government modernization goals of the new Department of Government Efficiency, headed by tech billionaire Elon Musk, and could take advantage of his team’s engineering experience as they seek to wring savings and efficiencies from government systems. 

    When Musk took over Twitter in 2022, he told employees in an email that they needed “to be extremely hardcore,” work “long hours at high intensity,” and that only “exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.” 

    Notably, Twitter employees also had to click “yes” on a document to confirm that they wanted to keep working at the company.

    Federal workers at agencies, including the departments of state and justice, began receiving test emails from this system on Thursday and early into Friday morning.

    Some employees thought the email might have been spam. 

    “Looks like a phishing attempt,” one federal worker told NBC News. 

    A Justice Department official sent a separate message saying the email should be considered trusted, but that they should use the agency’s phishing tool should they have suspicions about any other emails.

    One federal worker described it as a “mandatory federal government group chat.” Another said the requirement to reply “YES” made the email “feel like something out of 1984.” 

    “A ‘new’ system to communicate… except that OPM has always had an emergency text and email system,” a Justice Department employee texted. “You’re supposed to email back and respond ‘yes.’ Maybe they’re testing who blindly follows orders .”
